Rice Warns Putin: Don’t Send Troops To Ukraine

From the Wall Street Journal:

Obama Official Warns on Russia Sending Troops to Ukraine

By Peter Nicholas | February 23, 2014

A senior Obama administration official warned Russian leaders Sunday not to send armed forces into Ukraine to restore what they see as a compliant government, urging them to reject a Cold War view of the tumult in Ukraine as a struggle between East and West.

“That would be a grave mistake,” President Barack Obama’s National Security Adviser, Susan Rice, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” …

Ms. Rice’s ‘threat’ probably caused vodka to spurt out of Putin’s nose — in laughter. We are going to back up this threat how? Even as Ms. Rice spoke, Obama is proposing cutting the US military forces to below pre-WWII levels. (See below.)

Ms. Rice… made clear that the Obama administration isn’t mourning his departure from the scene, saying he had lost “enormous legitimacy … by turning on his people, by using violence in the streets against peaceful protesters and by flouting the will of the Ukrainian people.” …

Luckily, Mr. Obama has never turned against ‘his people’ and never flouted the will of the American people. Still, it’s a wonder Ms. Rice didn’t blame the protests on a video.

She spoke about [Yanukovych] in the past tense. While Mr. Yanukovych and his supporters in the Kremlin have described the events in Ukraine as a “coup,” Ms. Rice said the question of whether he must relinquish power is moot

Of course, it is very moot whether it was a coup or not. US law prohibits giving aid to any government that overthrows a democratically elected government. (Cf. Egypt.) But Ms. Rice probably doesn’t know that minor detail.

Meanwhile, from a cheering New York Times:

Pentagon Plans to Shrink Army to Pre-World War II Level

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel plans to shrink the United States Army to its smallest force since before the World War II buildup…

The proposal, described by several Pentagon officials on the condition of anonymity in advance of its release on Monday, takes into account the fiscal reality of government austerity and the political reality of a president who pledged to end two costly and exhausting land wars…

Again we ask, ‘what government austerity? Obama has spent like a drunken sailor. Just not on our sailors, or on anything to do with defending our country.

Officials also say that a smaller military could invite adventurism by adversaries. “You have to always keep your institution prepared, but you can’t carry a large land-war Defense Department when there is no large land war,” a senior Pentagon official said…

Besides, we have our massive nuclear stockpile as a deterrent. — No, wait. Thanks to Obama, we don’t even have that.

Under Mr. Hagel’s proposals [sic], the Army would drop over the coming years to between 440,000 and 450,000. That would be the smallest United States Army since 1940….

The cuts proposed by Mr. Hagel fit the Bipartisan Budget Act reached by Mr. Obama and Congress in December to impose a military spending cap of about $496 billion for fiscal year 2015…

And never mind that the rest of the sequester has been thrown out the window. The military cuts are forever. And it’s only going to get worse.

Under Mr. Hagel’s proposals [sic], the entire fleet of Air Force A-10 attack aircraft would be eliminated. The aircraft was designed to destroy Soviet tanks in case of an invasion of Western Europe, and the capabilities are deemed less relevant today…

Oh, our sides. No, we won’t ever need to destroy Russian tanks. (Cough) Ukraine.

By the way, note how all of these are just "Mr. Hagel’s proposals." That scamp. Just wait until Obama finds out what he wants to do to his beloved military.
