RNC: Obama Campaigning On Taxpayers’ $$

From a forgiving New York Times:

G.O.P. Questions Obama’s Travel Accounting

April 25, 2012

As President Obama returned to Washington on Wednesday after a two-day tour of crucial battleground states, the Republican National Committee requested an investigation into whether he was using taxpayer money for what amounted to campaign events.

Mr. Obama traveled to university campuses in North Carolina, Colorado and Iowa to speak at boisterous arena events that in some ways resembled campaign rallies as he sought to pressure Congress to stop the interest rate for federal student loans from rising this summer. The White House deemed the events to be “official” and therefore covered by taxpayer dollars.

“Throughout his administration, but particularly in recent weeks, President Obama has been passing off campaign travel as ‘official events,’ thereby allowing taxpayers, rather than his campaign to pay for his re-election efforts,” the R.N.C. said in a letter to the General Accountability Office. The committee requested that the G.A.O. examine the president’s travel.

Isn’t it odd that so many of Obama’s "official events" occur in vital battleground states?

The line between a president’s official duties and his campaign activities in an election year has long been blurry, and such disputes occur every time an incumbent president runs for re-election. The party out of power complains that the White House is abusing government resources for what amount to campaign purposes.

Except that when it is a Republican in the White House, the news media complains. When it is a Democrat, the news media defends them. Like the New York Times is trying to do here.

The White House responds that a president’s duties include speaking to constituents about critical issues, and that it properly bills political accounts for events that are overtly campaign [sic]

Apparently, Mr. Obama’s constituency is only comprised of college students and union thugs in ‘battleground states.’ By the way, we are now being told that Obama is going to officially start campaigning on May 5th.

From the Politico:

Obama campaign to kick off May 5

By: Glenn Thrush
April 25, 2012

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will officially kick off the 2012 general election on May 5 with rallies at Ohio State University in Columbus and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, representing twin paths he’ll need to win…

Campaign Manager Jim Messina described the kick-off day as “a ramp-up, not a zero to sixty moment.” In a conference call with reporters, he added, “We won’t be doing a bunch of these rallies.”

They have been ramping up since Obama got inaugurated. And they have been doing bunches of these rallies ever since, including this week.

But to be fair, campaigning is what Obama does best. In fact, it is probably the only thing he does well.

Although Obama’s campaign has been coordinating closely with the White House for a year, it’s officially starting a little late historically. George W. Bush delivered his first campaign speech in March 2004; Bill Clinton was already barnstorming in New Hampshire in February 1996

Mr. Obama delivered his first campaign speech January 21, 2009.

And, for the record, Obama has visited New Hampshire twice in the last five months. Michelle Obama was in Concord last month. And Joe Biden has been to the state three times this year alone. Undoubtedly, all of those trips were on the taxpayers’ dime.

Isn’t it appalling to realize that Obama is even less honest than Bill Clinton?

I’m impressed my his knowledge of mexican history in this clip. It’s far superior to his knowledge of US History, US tradition, or the US Constitution. Maybe he was using a mexican teleprompter that day.
