Russia Claims East Ukraine Voted For Sovereignty

From the Associated Press:

Insurgents say Ukraine region opts for sovereignty

By PETER LEONARD | May 12, 2014

DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — About 90 percent of voters in Ukraine’s sprawling industrial heartland backed their regions’ sovereignty in controversial referendums, which the Ukrainian government and the West have rejected as illegal, organizers said Monday…

And we believe them, too. (See article from last week below.)

The pro-Russian insurgents, who organized Sunday’s balloting, said the ultimate status of the regions would be discussed later and could include the possibility of secession or annexation by Russia or remaining part of Ukraine…

Ukraine’s central government and the West have condemned the balloting as a sham and a violation of international law, and accused Moscow of fomenting the unrest in a possible attempt to grab more land weeks after the annexation of Crimea…

Why are they so cynical?

Meanwhile, from BBC News:

Ukraine crisis: Self-rule referendums ‘a farce’

12 May 2014

In a brief statement, the Kremlin described the referendums as "the will of the people" and noted the "high turnout".

The Kremlin denounced what it claimed had been "attempts to disrupt the votes, with the use of force, including the use of heavy weapons, against civilians", reports the BBC’s Steve Rosenberg in Moscow.

The Russian authorities said they expected the results of the vote to be implemented in a civilised manner, without any repetition of violence and called for dialogue between Kiev, Donetsk and Luhansk…

In other words, they want the eastern half of Ukraine handed over without any fuss.

After the first round of voting in which voters were asked whether they supported self-rule, a second round of voting is planned in a week’s time, asking whether people support joining Russia…

This was no ordinary election. There were no independent monitors at the polls. In Mariupol, one colleague saw a woman putting multiple papers into the ballot box. This was a vote that was organised, run and then counted by the activists behind it…

Huh. Well, that sort of thing would never happen in out country.

As we noted last week, via an op-ed from Forbes:

Putin’s ‘Human Rights Council’ Accidentally Posts Real Crimean Election Results

By Paul Roderick Gregory | May 5, 2014

As you may recall, the official Crimean election results, as reported widely in the Western press, showed a 97 percent vote in favor of annexation with a turnout of 83 percent. No international observers were allowed… Yesterday, however, according to a major Ukrainian news site, TSN.ua, the website of the President of Russia’s Council on Civil Society and Human Rights posted a report that was quickly taken down…

According to this purported report about the March referendum to annex Crimea, the turnout of Crimean voters was only 30 percent. And of these, only half voted for the referendum–meaning only 15 percent of Crimean citizens voted for annexation…

So who can doubt that the results of this latest farce are even more padded?
