Russia Closes Base Crucial To Afghan War

Kyrgyzstan starts moves to close U.S. airbase

By Olga Dzyubenko

BISHKEK (Reuters) – Kyrgyzstan began moves on Wednesday to close a U.S. military air base in the former Soviet republic which is vital for supplying U.S.-led troops fighting in Afghanistan.

The decision by a traditional Russian ally in Central Asia sends a tough signal and challenge to new U.S. President Barack Obama as he plans to send additional troops to Afghanistan.

The base is an important staging post for the U.S.-led military campaign against the Taliban and its role has been heightened as Washington seeks to reinforce supply routes that bypass Pakistan, where supply convoys face security risks.

Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev announced the base would be shut after securing Russian financial aid at talks on Tuesday in Moscow, which wants to reduce U.S. influence in regions it considers part of its traditional sphere of interest.

The Kyrgyz government submitted to parliament a decree on closing the Manas air base on Wednesday.

Adakhan Madumarov, secretary of the Kyrgyz Security Council, said in Moscow the U.S. military would be given 180 days to close its operations and leave once the two sides had exchanged formal diplomatic notes outlining the intention.

"The government has made its decision," he told reporters without saying when the exchange was likely to take place…

Closing Washington’s only military outpost in Central Asia would pose a challenge for U.S. supply lines in the region, particularly after militants severed the main route into Afghanistan by blowing up a bridge in Pakistan this week…

Moscow, which operates its own airbase in Kyrgyzstan a few dozen kilometers away from Manas, has been irritated by Manas’s existence and has put pressure on Kyrgyzstan to close it.

During his visit to Moscow, Bakiyev received a promise of more than $2 billion in credit and aid from Russia to combat an economic crisis — the equivalent of about half of Kyrgyzstan’s gross domestic product

It’s almost as if the Soviet Union Russia is not a dependable ally in the war on terrorism challenge of political differences, after all.

But how can this be. For only yesterday we were assured by our media masters that Russia and the US were going to work closer together than ever, thanks to Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Russia, U.S. pledge closer cooperation under Obama

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

MOSCOW (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov agreed on Tuesday to work more closely on key strategic issues, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said.

The two foreign ministers spoke by telephone at the request of Washington, the ministry said in a statement.

"In the course of the discussion, the accent was given to the mutual interest of building a positive agenda for our relations after the arrival of the new U.S. administration."

"Especially noted was the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation, including questions of strategic dialogue and economic cooperation, as well as current international problems such as the resolution of (the situation in) Afghanistan," the statement said

    Here it comes.

The Moron, having amply demonstrated his weak spine in his first 2 weeks in office, will now face new challenges every few days.

Most demagogues eventually get their countries into agressive wars. Usually it’s deliberate. But not for The Moron. He will stumble into a war through sheer stupidity.

It’s a toss-up whether being a marxist or being a dorm-room naif is more dangerous to the country. But in either case, he certainly has the bases covered.

At least he’s moving fast. It doesn’t look like the drip-drip will last long.

Maybe Obama can write another letter. And then let Hillary take it over there with her teapot.

I only hope she can still make a corkscrew landing and dodge those dastardly, ever-so-hard-to-see sniper bullets.

When told of this, Bill-Jeff was quoted as saying: “That two-faced lying b**ch!”.

I wonder if Hitlery will enter the Madeline Albright “ugliest Broach Contest” thereby distracting delegates during negotiations.

“…Russia and the US were going to work closer together than ever, thanks to Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton.”

But they are working closely together, …hand in fellow traveler’s hand, toward the demise of America.

And with O’Bummer’s ssstteaddddy hand at the helm of the sinking ship of state, our Islamic enemies can rest assured that we’ll help them, as well.
