Russia To Help Chavez Develop Nukes

An Associated Press story from yesterday that somehow got very little attention from our media masters:

Venezuela’s Chavez aims to tap nuclear energy

September 16, 2009

CARACAS, Venezuela — Hugo Chavez wants to join the nuclear energy club and is looking to Russia for help in getting started.

The Venezuelan leader is already dismissing critics’ concerns over his nuclear ambitions, offering assurances his aims are peaceful and that Venezuela will simply be following in the footsteps of other South American nations using nuclear energy.

Yet his project remains in its planning stages and still faces a host of practical hurdles, likely requiring billions of dollars, as well as technology and expertise that Venezuela lacks.

Russia has offered to help bridge that gap, and Chavez has announced that the two countries have created an atomic energy commission.

"I say it before the world: Venezuela is going to start the process of developing nuclear energy, but we’re not going to make an atomic bomb, so don’t be bothering us afterward … (with) something like what they have against Iran," Chavez said Sunday…

Chavez said he discussed the nuclear issue last week with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin during a visit to Moscow.

"Russia is going to help us right down the middle of the road," Chavez said, using an expression that means openly and with nothing to hide. "Putin himself has said it: ‘We’re going to support Venezuela so that it has nuclear energy.’"

Russia already signed a framework agreement last year pledging cooperation. That agreement is "all there is for the moment," said Sergei Novikov, a spokesman for Russian state nuclear agency Rosatom

If an agreement is reached for Russia to help Venezuela create a nuclear research center, Russian specialists would likely participate closely to ensure nuclear safety and security, he said.

A Venezuelan delegation visited Moscow last month, and discussed creating programs for training Venezuelan specialists in nuclear safety and in the use of reactors, the Russian nuclear agency said in a statement. It said they also discussed training Venezuelans on designing and building "a cyclotron or research reactor with the aim of producing radioisotopes for medical purposes."

"Its objective was lost due to technological obsolescence, but we’re going to start, and we’re working on that with Russia," Chavez said.

It remains unclear what sort of nuclear technology, if any, Venezuela could seek from Iran. Chavez as early as 2005 expressed interest in developing nuclear energy and mentioned Venezuela could discuss it with Iran.

He said while visiting Iran on Sept. 4 that "we’re carrying out the visualization of the nuclear energy project, so that the Venezuelan people can also count on that marvelous resource for peaceful uses in the future."

He said Venezuela and Iran agreed to work together on geological studies in the Venezuelan Andes and the foothills in his home state of Barinas, because "we already have satellite information that indicates there are good mineral resources, different minerals that are very important for the country’s development." He didn’t elaborate, and didn’t mention uranium…

Remember how our media laughed about the ‘axis of evil’?

Notice Russia’s role in this.

Remember, Obama said he was going to do away with the Missile Shield in order to get Russia’s help in stopping Iran’s proliferation.

See how well that is working?

Tell me ……… If Obama gives a DAMN about the security and well being for our nation?

    YES …….. I’M SCREAMING!!!

“Tell me ……… If Obama gives a DAMN about the security and well being for our nation?”

      The answer is yes.

He cares to weaken our defenses and reduce our security so that we don’t have a pre-eminent position in the world.

That goal is probably his number one objective, higher even than the destruction of the middle class in America.

As the outrage against his economic politices increases, expect him to rush faster and harder on his primary goal.

Before the public catches onto that one as they have caught onto his socialism.

Also remember that as President, he has a much free-er hand with foreign policy than domestic policy, where he shares power with both houses of congress and the states.

In foreign policy, he can effectively destroy the country single-handedly, and very quickly as well.

Just like he is doing right now.

The weakness of the Obama’s administration is so reckless, so irresponsible that perhaps it will set up the conditions required for a much larger conflict. Multiple dictatorial governments known for their loathing of the United States are more free to develop and arm with nuclear weapons than under Bush – the inadequate UN and platitudes of the current US administration will do nothing to stop the trend.

Liberalism in our current office is not solely weakness – it is a lack of conscience. One who opposes war would be wise to engage in small conflicts when necessary in order to prevent larger escalations of violence – such as destroying Iran’s nuclear facilities, instead of allowing Iran to covertly produce nukes, laugh at the UN, and threaten several neighboring countries. If Chamberlain had stood up to Hitler instead of promoting the appeasement at Munich, how many millions would have lived?

I fear for the future. Chavez, Ahmadinejad, and other assorted thugs have more leeway today than they ever did under Bush.

    • proreason says:

      “One who opposes war ”

He doesn’t oppose war. He forthrightly declared Afghanistan to be a war we should be fighting.

And he isn’t weak on foreign policy either.

He hs blown of the heads of the teen-age pirates, and he has made numerous violent and illegal forays into Pakistan. Obviously, he found those actions to be politically expedient

Far from being weak, he is moving with authority to do as his puppet-masters have ordered, while ginning up a few distractions to keep the rubes in fly-over country from seeing the big picture.

    • beautyofreason says:

You’re right, ProReason. :) Perhaps I should say that he is not acting in America’s interests.

  3. RightWinger says:

Lil Barry is interested in America’s interests. He just neglects to say its “Central America” and its band of communist Banana Republic dictators.

  4. Tater Salad says:

It is time for the United States to start arming South Korea with nuclear missles and get Japan started also. The Obama administration is wrong to not back the new President of Honduras. The moron who got thrown out a few months back was a Hugo Chavez supporter. Clinton and Obama are all screwed up on this one. Russia is laughing at the United States and arming who they feel will put a pinch on the Untied States while this goof-ball we got as a President just talks on T.V. and appoints more czars. He has now thrown Poland and The Czech Republic under the bus. Who’s next? Honduras, Israel, Ukraine, and Georgia. Friends, we have an adminstration which does not have a clue of what is going on in the world.

    • proreason says:

“Friends, we have an adminstration which does not have a clue of what is going on in the world.”

I think they know exactly what they are doing, and they are succeeding at it.

Protecting this country or strengthening it’s position in the world is not one of their goals.

  5. BillK says:

On a different note, you’ll notice once again that nuclear energy is perfectly acceptable for any country in the world other than the United States to use.

Because it’s so much more efficient to install tens of thousands of solar panels instead.

  6. MinnesotaRush says:

Putin see’s his unbridled opportunity to finally become “thee world power” whilst this o-blah-blah gang of thug kids is running this soon-to-be-former world power.

He’s (Putin) cozy with the rogue dictators around the world .. putting the full court nuclear press on the US. He’s convinced o-blah-blah (wasn’t hard work) to let Isreal face their world problems on their own .. even Iran. And he’s worked him over on dropping the missile shield idea thereby leaving our NATO friends with a very bad taste in their mouth for us and a genuine concern for their future.

While o-blah-blah is prancing all over the American and world stage trying to convince everyone that he is a messiah and savior who should be running the world and solving all its’ problems (wink, wink), Putin is flying under the radar and out of the fanfare while he strings out a snare to position himself as Grand Pubba.

Putin is well aware of the wealth and power that comes from ownership of the oil and gas around simply his own regions. The Soviet Union is being somewhat quickly rebuilt from the strength of its’ oil and gas holdings. Imagine the lock they’d have on the world if they controlled all of the gas and oil supplies across the European continent AND the North American continent.

Just thinkin’ out loud here for a moment. Far fetched. Maybe. Or .. maybe not.

As far as o-blah-blah, Putin may reward him somewhat for getting such a huge jump on installing socialism here in the US for him. Maybe let him have 2 smokes before he lets the firing squad loose on the irrelevant “naive fool” that he’s been quoted to say of mr o-blah-blah.

Just thinkin’ out loud again. Either way .. we could be in big trouble soon.

  7. 12 Gauge Rage says:

MR, I don’t think you’re too far off the mark. Putin and Chavez’s ambitions for more power are so obvious. It astounds me to no end that a lot of people can’t see what’s going on. Or maybe they do but hope the problem will correct itself or simply go away. In the old days it was he who has the gold makes the rules. Today it’s he who controls the resources rules over you. But we’ve got a president who apparently hasn’t got a clue on how to deal with this. Or maybe he just doesn’t care.

  8. Reality Bytes says:

Seems Nukes are all the rage, except when it comes to Obama.

  9. Rusty Shackleford says:

“Remember, Obama said he was going to do away with the Missile Shield in order to get Russia’s help in stopping Iran’s proliferation.”

Steve, Steve, Steve.. You silly lad. Remember I said to wear your opposite hat when the great sitter-upon-the-throne speaks.
