Salt Lake Killer – Bosnian With Muslim Name

Trolley Market, the scene of a multiple fatal shooting. A teenager armed with a pump-action shotgun killed five people after opening fire in a crowded shopping mall as four others died in a separate US shooting spree, police said.

Killer identified as 18-year-old Solejman Talovic

The 18-year-old man who shot and killed at least five people Monday night at Trolley Square has been identified as Solejman Talovic, a Bosnian refugee who lived in Salt Lake City.

Little additional information was released about Talovic.

The Bosnian community, which numbers about 3,000 in Utah, planned a press conference later this afternoon.

Talovic parked his car in the west parking lot and walked into the mall, encountering two people, whom he shot. Then he walked further into the mall and shot a woman, said Police Chief Chris Burbank.

He then walked to a gift shop and shot five people. He shot several other people before he was gunned down by an off-duty Ogden police officer assisted by four Salt Lake City police officers, Burbank said.

He had a backpack that carried numerous rounds of ammunition as well as a .38-caliber handgun, said the chief.

Police have no motive in the killing.

No, of course not. What possible motive could he have?

It is a bit of conjecture to say that Mr. Talovic is a Muslim.

Still, it is a very likely one, given that his first name is reported to be Solejman, which is a variation on Suleiman.

Lest we forget, Suleiman the Magnificent is one of the greatest Muslim heroes. Not many Bosnian Christians would be naming their children Solejman.

So it’s a fairly safe bet Mr. Talovic is a Muslim.

One of the murderer’s relatives mentioned in some news reports is an aunt named Ajka Omerovic.

A Bosnian with the name of Omerovic made the news a couple of years ago.

Anthrax hoaxer gets 10-month sentence

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) – A man who mailed letters threatening to use anthrax against government agencies was sentenced Monday to 10 months in prison.

Amir Omerovic, 28, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Bosnia, had faced up to five years in prison after pleading guilty in U.S. District Court in February.

After serving his term, Omerovic will be confined to his home for six months and placed on supervision that will include mental health treatment, Judge Alan Nevas ordered.

Federal prosecutors said Omerovic mailed letters in October to Gov. John Rowland, the Coast Guard, Marine Corps and other public agencies in Connecticut. The letters referred to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“This is only the beginning,” the letters said. “Americans will die. Death to America and Israel.”

The letters did not contain anthrax or any other substance.

Federal officials said there was no evidence that Omerovic had access to anthrax.

Of course this could still have no relation whatsoever to this crime.
