San Francisco May Ban Happy Meals Toys

From an approving Associated Press:

San Francisco considers banning Happy Meals toys

By Trevor Hunnicutt, Associated Press Writer Sat Oct 2, 2010

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco has a long history of bold public health and environmental stances, going after everything from plastic bags in grocery stores to cigarettes to sugary drinks.

The latest target: Ronald McDonald.

A proposed city ordinance would ban McDonald’s from putting toys in Happy Meals unless it adds fruit and vegetable portions and limits calories. The proposal would apply to all restaurants, but the focus has been on McDonald’s and its iconic Happy Meals

The proposed Happy Meal law is just the latest in a string of San Francisco ordinances aimed at regulating public health. The city recently expanded a law banning tobacco sales in pharmacies to include grocery stores and big-box stores that also have pharmacies.

Meanwhile, you can buy ‘medical marijuana’ practically anywhere.

Mayor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order earlier this year banning sweetened beverages like Coca Cola and Pepsi from vending machines on city property. Local leaders considered but ultimately abandoned laws recently that would have imposed a fee on businesses that sell sugary drinks and alcohol

Have they banned Twinkies? Shouldn’t that be a top priority if they are concerned about public safety?

The Happy Meal ordinance is not all surprising given San Francisco’s famously liberal leanings.

"San Francisco has a reputation — and it’s well deserved — of being a very progressive city," said Alex Clemens, founder of Barbary Coast Consulting, a local political communications firm. "With that comes naturally, hand in hand, a reliance on government to encourage thoughtful change — that’s just tradition."

You know when you look at it that way, Germany under the Nazis were pretty "progressive." And we suppose the Taliban of today are, too.

  1. Liberals Demise says:

Too bad they can’t and won’t ban “Happy” illegals.
We all know how those Happy Meal Toys are a drain on the economy and break little kids hearts.

  2. Petronius says:

“reliance on government to encourage thoughtful change –– that’s just tradition.”

Yes, it’s an American tradition. Unlike other things which are not traditions.

Things such as freedom of choice. Self-responsibility. Pursuit of happiness. Property rights. And use of the reconciliation procedure in the U. S. Senate strictly for the limited purpose of resolution of budget conflicts.

But, hey, why worry about happy meal toys? Pretty soon Americans will be lining up outside McDonald’s just hoping to get their daily ration of cabbage from the commissars.

  3. Curmudgeon says:

I was just thinking the other day that Happy Meal toys had avoided outrage and ban much longer than I would have expected, but I was thinking about the horrible separation of boy and girl toys. What about those poor gender-confused children? Shouldn’t there be a gender neutral option for them?

“A proposed city ordinance would ban McDonald’s from putting toys in Happy Meals unless it adds fruit and vegetable portions and limits calories.”

In other news, environmentalists are weighing possible fines for the amount of fruits and vegetables that are thrown away in McDonald’s Happy Meals.

“This food could have gone to a starving child in China. Instead, it ended up here”, said Mr Lighten D Loafers, pointing at a dumpster that had several happy meal cartons left there after a 3rd grade field trip to the Exploratorium, with the fruit and vegetable portions uneaten and left to rot. “It’s just a shameful waste.”, he added. “They should put all those children in prison.” , Mr Loafers asserted in justified anger.

    Rules of unintended consequences.

  5. JohnMG says:

Everyone is missing the obvious point here. This IS San Francisco we’re talking about.

A friend who worked for a time in that garbage hole in one of the hospital emergency rooms regaled us for hours by telling us of the number and frequency of the gays who would turn up on any given night needing medical assistance to remove some really bizzare objects from these perverts’ anuses. Shot glasses, Magic Markers, bicycle hand grips…..it was hilarious in a twisted sort of way.

Now you know the REAL reason for banning the toys in the Happy Meals. Either that, or start supplying different “toys”.

    • proreason says:

Taking your point further in a serious vein….

How does the ‘danger’ posed by happy meals compare to the danger from Aids and the many other mental and physical hazards of homosexuality?

It’s like banning the chess club but letting Geoffrey Dahmer organize a young men for Obamy group.

    • JohnMG says:

      That was my point, indirectly.

The perverse is normal for them, so why should anyone of a serious nature take any of their actions and regard them the vanguard for the rest of the nation. In a sane world, anything that came from the land of fruits and nuts would be dismissed out of hand.

    • untrainable says:

Unfortunately we don’t live in a sane world anymore. As for San Fran being a vanguard for the rest of the nation… only if dems stay in power. If they do, then there is no telling what other flaky nutty fruity plans will come to the table (with sliced apple and celery side dishes).
