Schoolbooks Turn Pinocchio, Tom Sawyer Muslim

Pinocchio and friends converted to Islam

Pinocchio, Tom Sawyer and other characters have been converted to Islam in new versions of 100 classic stories on the Turkish school curriculum.

"Give me some bread, for Allah's sake," Pinocchio says to Geppetto, his maker, in a book stamped with the crest of the ministry of education.

"Thanks be to Allah," the puppet says later.

In The Three Musketeers, D'Artagnan is told that he cannot visit Aramis. The reason would surprise the author, Alexandre Dumas.

An old woman explains: "He is surrounded by men of religion. He converted to Islam after his illness."

Tom Sawyer may always have shirked his homework, but he is more conscientious in learning his Islamic prayers. He is given a "special treat" for learning the Arabic words.

Pollyanna, seen by some as the embodiment of Christian forgiveness, says that she believes in the end of the world as predicted in the Koran.

Heidi, the Swiss orphan girl in the tale by Johanna Spyri, is told that praying to Allah will help her to relax.

Several more books have been altered, including La Fontaine's fables and Victor Hugo's Les Miserables.

The clumsy insertions by Islamic publishing houses have caused controversy in Turkey, which has been a strongly secular state since the 1920s.

Other books contain insults, slang and rude rhymes which mock the president and the prime minister.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is Turkey's first Islamic premier, has called for swift action to be taken against the publishers.

The education ministry has threatened to take legal action against any publisher which continues to issue such books.

Huseyin Celik, the education minister, said: "If there are slang and swear words, we will sue them for using the ministry logo."

Is nothing sacred?

The Turkish Minister of Education has fired back.

    From the Turkish Dail News:

Çelik: Book talk fabricated to smear ministry

    Wednesday, August 30, 2006

Education Minister Çelik says some writers resenting the ministry for not including their works in a list of reccomended books are delibarately trying to smear the reputation of his ministry

    ANKARA - Turkish Daily News

… Çelik on Tuesday lashed out at publishing companies, which were found to have printed distorted translations of world classics included in the Ministry’s list of “100 Essential Readings,” recommended for school children. Çelik said the list was not compiled for exploitation of publishing companies. “Anyone with the slightest sense of good judgment would perfectly understand that works directed at educators and students should not contain these,” Çelik said referring to ideological phrases and vulgar language, recently discovered to be inserted in some of the books by irresponsible publishing companies.

A scandal broke when a newspaper last week uncovered that some publishers had deliberately distorted the content of the books on the list. These publications, printed with the ministry-approved logo, were either altered to reflect the publishers’ often religious ideology or included obscene words and phrases. Characters in such titles of children’s literature as Heidi or Pinocchio act and speak as Muslims in the distorted translations.

Çelik reiterated an earlier statement that the ministry would take legal action as required against companies that printed inappropriate publications. “Certain writers have recently got caught up in this artificial controversy, I believe in an effort to serve their ulterior motive of maximizing publishing profits. Similarly, turning the list into a subject of a fight for profits by those who have been bothered by their books not being included in the list would hurt the spirit of education…

It was just some over zealous contractors at fault.

That’s the same excuse CBS gave about the photoshopping of Katie Couric’s photo.

A little more info from the Turkish Hürriyet:

100 core literary works given an ‘Islamic’ makeover

One hundred core literary works recommended to students by the National Education Ministry were given “Islamic makeovers” in new editions published by unrecognized publishers, according to Radikal.

In Tolstoy’s classic War and Peace, the hero walks around an Islamic tomb, while Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer tries to learn the prayers in his hands, and Pollyanna reveals her gratitude to God for all he has given her. Damla Publishers printed abridgements of under the 96-page limit to avoid receiving an official stamp.

    La Fontaine’s religious fox

The fox that grabs the fisherman’s fish in one of La Fontaine’s stories tells the fisherman, “May Allah keep your path free.”

    Sawyer’s prayer

On the p.17 of Mark Twain’s famous work, Tom Sawyer, Tom attempts to learn the prayers he is holding in his hands. He learns all the prayers in half an hour in order to get a gift.

Pinocchio and Heidi are among the many other famous tales to have been altered to have an Islamic twist.

And if Pinocchio blows up a few infidels, he will become a real boy! But unfortunately, his nose keeps growing every time he sees a woman’s ankles…

Turkey, with a population of more than 63 million, cannot come up with their own childrens’ books?
(this is the country, bear in mind, where Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” was the number-one seller last year)

  7. Liberty Belle

What a bunch of lazy, intellectually challenged putzes! They can’t even be bothered to make up their own stories, but have to rely on usurping the literary works of better minds. They’ve been doing it for centuries. I wonder where they lifted “1001 Nights” from.

I’ll bet a full length swim suit is included with each book.

Muslim full-body swimsuits join the beach bikinis
    By Oliver Poole in Istanbul

    (Filed: 21/07/2006)

The beaches of Turkey, crowded with women in bikinis or sunbathing topless, are witnessing a new phenomenon: neck-to-ankle swimwear worn by increasingly confident Muslim women.

The Islamic swimwear consists of a full-body suit and a hood that is pulled over a tight bonnet. The development is worrying the country’s secularists and there have been reports of lifeguards ordering women off beaches for wearing the suits.

Religiously conservative women have traditionally shunned the beaches. If they did visit, they were unable to swim as they were unwilling to bare their flesh in public.
But more than 25,000 of the Islamic swimsuits have been sold in the past year and their leading maker, Hasema, is struggling to cope with demand. Hayrunnisa Gul, the wife of the foreign minister, is among its customers.

The swimsuits come in a range of colours and patterns and the latest versions let the sun through, allowing the wearer to obtain a tan.

Reha Muhtar, a leading writer, provoked controversy when he wrote in a leading newspaper describing the swimwear as “bizarre”. Ahmet Hakan, another columnist, labelled the suits as “silly, tasteless and weird”.

Women’s clothing is a question of politics in Turkey well as fashion. Since Mustafa Kemal Ataturk founded the modern state as a secular country, headscarves have been banned in schools and universities and for civil servants. That has resulted in some religious female students wearing wigs instead of scarves to enable them to complete their studies. For some young women, wearing a headscarf has become associated with teenage rebellion.

But since the election of the moderate Islamic government of Recep Tayyid Erdogan, Muslim women have been far less coy about demonstrating their beliefs in public.

As well as the growing enthusiasm for the full body swimsuits, Muslim camping sites, spas and beach resorts that do not sell alcohol and segregate men and women have sprung up. For example, the Caprice Hotel, on the Aegean coast, advertises “a modern vacation complex… where the sound of prayer is heard five times a day”.

  9. The Apologist

Gee, I wonder why terrorism is so widespread in these countries. It must be something that America is doing.

Liberals never have a problem with this stuff. Prayers at High School football games in America? Why, that would warp delicate little minds into believing a crock like Christianity! Muslims warping the presses in Turkey? Mere enthusiasm for their faith.
