I confess I didn’t listen to his explanations about his decision to support Scuzzy. I need to go find them.

The other thing that is unfortunately in play here is that Hoffman is so untelegenic.

Nobody I’ve heard has said it, and it shouldn’t matter, but it does. I watched him on Hannity last night, and he really needs some image advice. Or at least somebody should buy him a suit that fits.

There absolutely are people who won’t vote for a person who is visually a doofus, unless that person is unusually compelling in some other respect. For most people, emotion trumps logic and the way a person looks elicits an emotional response.

The Moron’s handlers played on that expertly. I think it’s one of the reason’s he was picked, and one of the biggest reasons he is where he is.

As I’ve said, I also am disappointed in Newt for several things he has done lately. Kind of like every single one of my relatives and friends.

The reason I’m makin the point here as forcefully as I am is that there is one thing that bothers me a lot about the danger of shutting Newt down. He is the single best conservative in the country at handling the libwit press. And I hate to lose that power.

If Palin had Newt’s aplomb with the media, McCain would have won in 2008 and / or she would be a shoe-in for the Presidency in 2012.

BTW, here is my out-of-the-box idea for a winning ticket in 2012…..TWO WOMEN. Pick any two from Palin, Michelle Bachman, and Liz Cheney.

That could be a game-changer.

If you can’t include people like Newt in your party, you have no chance of winning nationally again, ever. Do you think for a nano-second that Reagan would have rejected Newt?

There may not be a more conservative person who posts here than myself, but I don’t expect everybody to agree with everything I say, and I certainly don’t expect to agree with everything anybody else says.

There are plenty of pseudo-conservatives out there that merit disdain. David Brooks, David Frum, lots of politicians, maybe Peggy Noonan, maybe AllahPundit on HotAir, maybe some of the contributors to NRO.

But if you can’t let NEWT in your party, the man who hatched the Contract with America and who has long been the most articulate spokesman for conservative values, then it is hard to imagine there is any hope for that party.

I’ve read the comments on Newt’s web-site, and my conclusion is that some of those people are as nuts as the libwits. Suicide isn’t sane, imho. I haven’t heard anybody here go that far, by the way.

But as I read the comments here about his personal life and I hear the complaints of the excellent posters here. Is it possible for you to imagine that he might be trying to make conservative palatable to enough people to interest them into listening to the whole set of ideas? And is it possible to understand that a person who has been a Republican for decades might be fooled by his party about a couple of candidates? I wish he hadn’t been, and maybe he is stretched where I would not have stretched, but geez.

Geez.

I am still trying to figure out which party he is talking about. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I, too, hope that Newt can provide a justification for his support of a Specter wannabe. We do need all of the help we can get.

Personally, I think that is a big mistake.

Newt ain’t perfect and he called this one wrong. It may have bumped him out of the top-contenders list for 2012, probably with justification.

But he is still one of the best conservatives we have and certainly one of the ones who is best at handling the press.

We need him.

And I hope he is able to gracefully explain today why he now believes his call was bad.

Republican Scozzafava Endorses Democrat After Exiting N.Y. Congressional Race

Republican Dede Scozzafava endorsed her former Democratic opponent Sunday in the race for an upstate New York congressional seat, shaking up the contest for the second day in a row after exiting the race Saturday.

Scozzafava dropped out after Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman experienced a late-in-the-game surge. The move was expected to consolidate GOP voters behind Hoffman on Tuesday.

But on Sunday, Scozzafava issued a written statement in which she backed Democrat Bill Owens.

“I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same,” she said. “In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be an independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York. Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first.” …
