Seattle Gives Out Free Crack Pipes, Needles

From an approving Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

U District needle exchange gives out free crack pipes

For more than 20 years, local heroin addicts have relied on a collection of needle exchanges for clean works. But in recent months, crack users too have quietly found an outlet in the city.

In a nondescript alley in the University District, users can pick up clean crack pipes, pipe filters and ascorbic acid for injecting crack. Heroin users can also pick up a drug that reverses a heroin overdose — an apparent first for a city needle exchange

Public health officials know of no other local program that gives out crack kits or Naloxone, the heroin-overdose reversal drug. But they see the potential benefits.

Just as sterile syringes reduce the spread of HIV and other diseases, new and unbroken glass pipes are believed to prevent lip cuts and the spread of hepatitis strains. Rubber tips and new filters ward off mouth burns. Ascorbic acid helps prevent users from using lemon juice to dissolve cocaine rocks into an injectable liquid — a common practice that can lead to fungal infections.

"Our program is primarily an HIV prevention program," said Michael Hanrahan, manager of education and prevention services of the HIV/STD program with Public Health — Seattle & King County. The agency, which runs four exchange programs, has watched the demand for clean needles surge from 1.8 million in 2006 to nearly 3.4 million last year.

Hanrahan said research has documented HIV transmission from dirty needles, but he wasn’t aware of rigorous studies showing disease spread via crack sores.

"But it’s certainly theoretically plausible," he said.

Well, that’s good enough for us.

The program began giving out crack kits a few months ago, after staffers felt the need to support crack users, who still make up a major local drug trend, according to a recent University of Washington study.

And the exchange began giving out Naloxone soon after the new law took effect in June.

Murphy estimated his program gives out two million needles a year and 10 pipes a day. This month, it handed out 25 vials of Naloxone.

"We don’t have clients, we just have community members. I make it clear to everyone that everyone is family here," Murphy said…

Yes, what a wonderful “family.” Creating more and more chemically induced zombies. More chemically induced Democrats.

Thank you, Mr. Soros.

I’m fairly certain that crack-induced morons aren’t all that inclined to go vote. As I’ve said all my life, sad as it may be, it’s a choice and …..hastening their demise is fine with me.

Now, for those who say, “What if it was your kid” then I would say that first, I would intervene and do my damnedest to stop it. However, I also know that when a person has chosen unwisely, the responsibility for that choice rests primarily on them.

Should my own loved one die as a result of drug addiction, I would be devastated, of course. But, I also know that I cannot blame anyone but the person responsible. Sure, I might get some satisfaction from turning a drug pusher into a puddle of goo, as well as that should be, but…it wouldn’t bring my loved one back.

People make choices. Often times wrong or bad ones.

    Socialism will not change that.

      Great post Rusty.

Choices – It is my experience that even the most untrained/unparented of SANE minds have a realistic ability to comprehend the difference between right and wrong, or have the capability to realize when a wrong decision is resulting in a harmful result.

To this extent, the responsibility always falls to the individual.

But there are strong outside forces that encourage and it would seem benefit from the behavior. As we always knew and feared, it had as much to do with elements within our own government as it did anything cultural.

It’s clear Socialism profits off bad choices, especially addictions. What a better and easier way to enslave someone to the state? Cartel’s (Cocaine, Heroine) and Terrorist Groups (Opium) understand this.

Get ’em while they’re young. Get ’em angry at their parents or some other enemy target of authority. Get ’em angry at life and the very foundational values that “inhibit” them. Then, give them your version of the answer, your version of “freedom.”

It’s worked disastrously well here in the People’s Republic of Kalhefornia.

This sounds like a very costly program to operate, since the people involved have a tendency to increase as a result.

If the theory is to control the problem, wouldn’t it make more sense to give these freeloading freaks their next dose of crystal meth or their next “rock” in the form of a cyanide capsule instead. This would instantly reduce the workload. And who would complain. As I recall, Kervorkian hailed from the Pacific Northwest and nobody complained about him and his practices. And those fools DID vote to allow assisted suicide.

This would give a whole new definition to the term “fix”.

  3. proreason says:

    Just what we need.

    Happier heroine addicts.

People who have only made a few hundred self-destructive mistakes in their lives shouldn’t be miserable just because people who chose not to make the same mistakes are greedily hoarding their money.

  4. eaglewingz08 says:

How about free burglary kits to potential burglars. After all they’re part of the community too.

  5. TwilightZoned says:

The fact drug addicts are able to get kits, to reduce the spread of HIV and other diseases, is nothing more than enabling. It doesn’t do anything to reduce crime committed in order for addicts to get their next “fix”. Heroin can be a very expensive habit. Oh, wait…panhandling, mugging, robbery must be considered part of wealth redistribution and therefore good in the grand scheme of things. (wink, wink)

Just my thoughts completely TZ – Enabling drug use/addiction on the taxpayers money? How damn stupid and useless is that? Where are the taxpayers in that area – bet this was snuck in as an ‘addict assistance program’ -without explanation as to what these idiots were intending to do at all.

I am sick and tired of people who chose to do something illegal being given a pass because _______(fill in the blank – color, poverty, blah, blah, blah). You want to be just, you want to fair – get them out of society – protect the majority from the minority, enforce the laws. We all have to be dragged down to the lowest common denominator – because the more money you take from the hard working, law abiding – the closer they become to the ______(fill in the blank – blah blah blah). It does not work the other way at all. Take a look liberal, progressive asses – Detroit, California, Chicago – where ever. You hand out an education, food, housing, welfare, medicaid, etc, etc, etc – Are the people a damn bit better at all? Are those places thriving, incoming increasing, employment meccas at all? A big resounding NO.

These people deserve nothing, other than to be removed from society forever. They are not civilized, they do not care about themselves much less anyone else and they contribute nothing at all. Capable of redemption, saving – possibly – but you stupid liberals don’t like the methods that work – Incarceration (be it a mental hospital or jail) and of course the most successful addiction programs involve (dare I say it) God. Sad yes, my fault Hell No So why should I pay for it at all. Jail ’em – Use to be we could remove the dangerous from society – but the touchy feelly morons took that away. So now the insane run the asylum.

Over in Holland, that bastion of socialist think-tankers, they have admitted that tolerance of drug-use is a failure. Some years ago, I read an article where they lamented the people in the area all laying around, stoned or dead. And it was markedly worse at some times than others and that overall, it did nothing but create a problem.

Their current “plan” that they utilize now is that “soft” drugs like hashish and marijuana are allowed and sold openly but that “hard” drugs are not tolerated.

It’s really unbelievable. Open drug use removes one of the necessary societal stigmas, which they say forces them to do it in hidden ways but what they miss is that drug use, open or hidden, destroys lives. And not just the user’s life but everyone who is touched by it. Family, friends, co-workers, crime victims. Just because it’s readily available and “out in the open” does NOT allow for its control.

Once addicted, the human brain becomes a machine of destruction with its biggest priority getting its next dose of chemical. Few things have been studied more than drug addiction and its effects on the brain. There is monumental evidence to support that you just cannot use hard drugs “occasionally” that most of them are addicting, including the THC laden ones though the addiction is of a more emotional need than a physical one.

Just the same, you will note that you’ll never much hear about Holland’s huge drug bazaar failure that has been largely shut down.

And, as far as the socialists argument that dope should be legalized because “after all, people die from smoking and alcohol too and legalized narcotics are no worse than that”:

Even if you were idealistic enough to support needle exchange because HIV is so serious, isn’t this a bit ridiculous — to avoid lip cuts and hepatitis?

  7. TerryAnne says:

Ok, so the government is funding free instruments for a life-shortening habit in order to decrease the amount of life-shortening diseases that come as a result of said habits and the lifestyle they induce?

There are times when I wish George Orwell was still alive…

  8. proreason says:

    Random thought.

How many drug addicts have conservative political philosophies?

Of course, I’m not suggesting in any way that drug users would ever be a class of people that liberals would actively solicit.

Ditto for pushers, convicts, child molestors, con artists, prostitutes and pimps, rappers, race baiters, union thugs, lawyers and Hollywood celebreties.

Or the many overlaps among those groups.
