Poor miners were really in a bind there. The company was exploiting them and ignoring safety causing miners to be killed and suffer death due to black lung and the Union thugs were beating them up if they didn't join. On Blair Mt the Feds sent in troops to quiet the miners (and unionists) and in Matewan the mining companies sent in detective thugs to bully and throw the miners out of company housing for joining the union. What a horrible time for the little guy. That was the only time in history I think a union had a reason to be. After that though they got so large and took over so much of the nations economy they became as big a thug as the companies had once been. Now as far as I am concerned there is NO need for unions!
