The Wall Street Journal: The Return of Israel’s Existential Dread
    By YOSSI KLEIN HALEVI
    Jerusalem Oct 30 2009

The postcard from the Home Front Command that recently arrived in my mailbox looks like an ad from the Ministry of Tourism. A map of Israel is divided by color into six regions, each symbolized by an upbeat drawing: a smiling camel in the Negev desert, a skier in the Golan Heights.

In fact, each region signifies the amount of time residents will have to seek shelter from an impending missile attack. If you live along the Gaza border, you have 15 seconds after the siren sounds. Jerusalemites get a full three minutes. But as the regions move farther north, the time drops again, until finally, along the Lebanese and Syrian borders, the color red designates “immediate entry into a shelter.” In other words, if you’re not already inside a shelter don’t bother looking for one.

The invisible but all-pervasive presence on that cheerful map of existential dread is Iran. If Israel were to launch a pre-emptive strike against Iranian nuclear facilities, Tehran’s two terrorist allies on our borders—Hezbollah and Hamas—would almost certainly renew attacks against the Israeli home front. And Tel Aviv would be hit by Iranian long-range missiles.

On the other hand, if Israel refrains from attacking Iran and international efforts to stop its nuclearization fail, the results along our border would likely be even more catastrophic. Hezbollah and Hamas would be emboldened politically and psychologically. The threat of a nuclear attack on Tel Aviv would become a permanent part of Israeli reality. This would do incalculable damage to Israel’s sense of security.

… Israelis from the right and the left have reacted with heightened anxiety. “Kosher Uranium,” read the mocking headline of Israel’s largest daily, Yediot Aharonot. Media commentators noted that easing world pressure on Iran will simply enable it to cheat more easily. If Iranian leaders are prepared to sign an agreement, Israelis argue, that’s because they know something the rest of us don’t.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s recent threat to “obliterate” Iran if it launched a nuclear attack against Israel only reinforced Israeli fears that the U.S. would prefer to contain a nuclear Iran rather than pre-empt it militarily.

Lockhart Post: Third local soldier dies in Middle East
By Kathi Bliss Editor Oct 30 2009

The War on Terror claimed a third victim from Caldwell County this week.
According to a statement released by the Department of Defense on Thursday, Lance Corporal Cody R. Stanley, USMC, 21, died on Oct. 28 while supporting combat operations in the Helmand province of Afghanistan.

Stanley was on a DISMOUNTED PATROL when he was killed, according to a prepared statement given by 2nd Lt. Joshua Benson, a spokesman for Camp Pendleton, Calif.
enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2006. He was a rifleman and served with the Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines. The unit is based at the Marine Air-Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms, Calif. The unit was deployed to the Middle East in stages, in late September and early October.

During his military career, Stanley earned several honors, including the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and a Sea Service Deployment ribbon.

Funeral services for Stanley, who returned to the United States under military escort this week, will be held in Lockhart. .

Didn’t make the news, and as I’m familar with the military mis-reporting air-craft incidents, I don’t even believe what the news is saying about out troops dying in helicopter crashes. I think there is great pressure from Obama to under-report the increase of deaths in Afganistan.

Economist: Fixing leaky pipes; In the pipeline
      Oct 27th 2009

WATER is precious, yet much is wasted. The World Bank estimates that 88 billion litres of treated water is lost from leaking urban pipelines every day, a quantity split evenly between rich and poor countries. Now an Israeli company called Curapipe has developed a system that aims to seal leaks cheaply with only a small disruption to the water supply.

wasted water is lost through what the International Water Association, an industry body, calls “background leakage”—that is, small but widespread cracks that drip water continuously…. Short of replacing the entire water main, which is both expensive and disruptive, the only way to cut background leakage below these levels has been to reduce the water pressure.

And not only water. Oil and gas pipelines are more closely monitored and more thoroughly maintained than water mains, yet Peter Paz, Curapipe’s boss, thinks the firm’s system could also be used to prevent small but devastating leaks in such pipelines. Big leaks in oil and gas pipelines are tackled immediately, but “pinhole” leaks can go undetected and result in a larger spill than a rupture would produce….

SAN FRANCISCO — Nine more U.S. banks, all owned by the same Illinois holding company, were closed Friday by regulators, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said U.S. Bank of Minneapolis would assume their deposits.

The closings brought the 2009 total to 115 in 2009 — the first year since 1992 that more than 100 banks have gone under. …

AP: Geithner: Recovery could be ‘a little choppy’
    Oct 31 2009

WASHINGTON – Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the economic recovery “could be a little choppy” and it’s going to take a while.

Geithner told NBC’s “Meet the Press”…

He declined to say whether the recession is over, saying

AP: After all the fuss, public health plan covers few
    By Ricardo Alonso-zaldivar Oct 31 2009

WASHINGTON – What’s all the fuss about? After all the noise over Democrats’ push for a government insurance plan to compete with private carriers, coverage numbers are finally in: Two percent.

Some experts are wondering if lawmakers have wasted too much time arguing about the public plan,

“It has sucked all the oxygen out of the room and diverted attention from bread-and-butter consumer issues, such as affordable coverage and comprehensive benefits.”

But to keep from piling more on the federal deficit, most of the uninsured will have to wait until 2013 for help. Even then, many will have to pay a significant share of their own health care costs.

It found that the scaled back government plan in the House bill wouldn’t overtake private health insurance. To the contrary, it might help the insurers a little.

The budget office estimated that about 6 million people would sign up for the public option in 2019, when the House bill is fully phased in. That represents about 2 percent of a total of 282 million Americans under age 65.

Others, mainly low-income people, would be covered through an expanded Medicaid program.

To be fair, most people would not have access to the new public plan.

The budget office said “a less healthy pool of enrollees” would probably be attracted to the public option, drawn by the prospect of looser rules on access to specialists and medical services.

As a result, premiums in the public plan would be higher than the average for private plans.

Insurers aren’t buying the budget office analysis. Asked if it might soften that opposition, industry spokesman Robert Zirkelbach of America’s Health Insurance Plans responded with a curt “No.”

While a government plan might start out modestly, insurers fear that Congress could change the rules later, opening it up to all people and setting take-it-or-leave payments for hospitals and medical providers, instead of negotiating, as the House bill calls for.

For the same reason, employer groups also remain wary. Big companies don’t want to lose control of their health care budgets and instead have the government send them a tax bill.

“That cost is going to come back to you one way or another … and it’s coming back in the way of taxes and liabilities,” said Eastman Kodak’s chief executive, Antonio M. Perez, speaking for the Business Roundtable. “We just don’t believe that there are miracles out there.”

Democrats might have reason to regret all the time and energy they invested in it.

AP: No trick: 2,000 kids knock on White House door
By Christine Simmons Oct 31 2009

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama on Saturday doled out presidential M&Ms and dried fruit mixes to more than 2,000 trick-or-treaters, marking their Halloween at a White House

event partly aimed at honoring military families.

Kids also received a National Park Foundation Ranger activity book.

Mrs. Obama wore furry cat ears and a leopard-patterned top. Obama said the kids looked adorable,

as well as his wife, “a very nice looking Catwoman.”

The night’s arrangements took a month or two to prepare, the White House said.

The loot handed out was just part of the treat for the visiting kids, who were chosen with help from the Education Department.

“He touched my hand,” said a beaming Tiera Thomas, 11, of Washington, D.C., after she picked up her candy from President Obama.

Then they headed inside to the East Room, where the first couple attended a reception for military families and for the moms and dads who work at the White House, along with their kids.

Obama thanked the military members and their families.

The president, dressed in casual clothes, was one of the few not in costume. Even Obama’s press secretary,

Robert Gibbs, was dressed as Darth Vader, the “Star Wars” villain.

But the White House would not say what Sasha and Malia were wearing,

Over the years, the winter holidays have been the ones to get the full treatment at the White House, with Christmas trees and tinsel all around.

The Obamas are not the first, though, to show Halloween spirit.

President George H.W. Bush and first lady Barbara Bush hosted 500 children on Halloween in 1989, loading them up with fun loot but also teaching them about the dangers of drugs. The kids came decked out in costumes; some Secret Service agents came dressed as clowns.

Channel 4 News: Thorneloe warned of helicopter shortage
by Andrew Thomas 31 October 2009

Lt Col Rupert Thorneloe, the most senior British soldier killed in Afghanistan, had complained about a helicopter shortage just weeks before his death.

Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe,…his convoy was hit by an improvised explosive device

…before his death, he sent a memo saying helicopter movements in the war-torn country were “not fit for purpose” and there were not enough of the aircraft.

…dispatches were sent by the Welsh Guardsman,… “I have tried to avoid griping about helicopters – we all know we don’t have enough.

“… so this month we have conducted a great deal of administrative movement by road.”

“This increases the IED threat and our exposure to it.”

Three weeks after Lt Col Thorneloe’s death, Prime Minister Gordon Brown dismissed suggestions that British lives were being lost because of a shortage of helicopters.

AP: As US looks for exit in Afghanistan, China digs in
By Richard Lardner Nov 1 2009

WASHINGTON – At a former al-Qaida stronghold southeast of the Afghan capital, a state-owned Chinese company is at work on a $3 billion mine project to tap one of the world’s largest unexploited copper reserves, a potential financial boon for an impoverished country mired in war.

Afghan officials insist the Aynak bidding was handled openly and honestly,…. U.S. geologists and Western businessmen who watched the process closely disagree.

… China offered to start work right away while Phelps wanted to wait until the country was safer.

China Metallurgical, better known as MCC, has a poor track record with mining projects in other countries, according to Yeager and other critics. In neighboring Pakistan, for example,…

The Aynak deal was awarded to the Chinese late 2007, but the project is only now getting under way.

China has contributed little to improving security in Afghanistan, yet with the Aynak deal, stands to gain from the sacrifices made by the U.S. and NATO in troops and money.

Obama goes to NJ for final pitch of ‘09 elections

This is just disgusting. Since when do presidents go traipsing about stumping for a governor election? It’s just beyond ludicrous. Proof that he’s a Godfather wanna-be.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200.....DMQ–

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is making a last-minute campaign appearance for New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine’s re-election bid.

Obama’s scheduled to appear Sunday at a pair of rallies for the only incumbent governor seeking re-election. Just one of two governors’ offices on the ballot for Tuesday’s elections, the White House is aware Democratic losses would be spun as a referendum on Obama.

The results could also foreshadow next year’s elections, when 37 governorships come up for grabs.

The president plans to appear with Corzine at two New Jersey campaign stops, in Camden and Newark, before returning to the White House

Yet another trip on the big, shiny flying limo. And WHY? To personally have access to oversee the NJ gubernatorial election? I wonder, did he go there to make sure that ACORN (which is still funded by taxes, BTW) was doing its job? That everyone was in place to see to it that his boy would get “elected”?

Every move this clown makes is really and truly VERY transparent. But why is he never called on it? If Booooooosh had done this, wouldn’t Brian Williams be all over him like a bad paint job? Of course he would.

So why does this foul example of humanity get a pass?

Our watchdog media….instead…..seems to praise this behavior.

    • proreason

As many have pointed out, he is the most narcissistic person to appear on the planet in 80 years, perhaps forever.

But there is something else going on here as well.

Everything he does that isn’t about Health Care helps his fascist cause, because it is just another feint.

The decisive battle is going on in Congress right now.

    • Rusty Shackleford

Well, even on a different level, this is just absurd. This is the type of activity a person does when they have no clue as to how to manage or be a chief executive. Making appearances to “sell” a candidate to the public while there is, as he said it, “so much on his plate” and the deftly obedient media just following along to see what the “first black president” is going to do next.

It sickens me. Aside from my natural hatred of most things “celebrity”, I find the fawning and scribbling down of every move simple idol-worship and a pagan ritual of the most ridiculous nature. It’s so bad that I cannot find the words to explain how I feel about this behavior.

My friends and my family and I are all of the same opinion and we have all said it, “When he comes on the TV, I cannot change the channel fast enough. Or, if he comes on the radio, I turn the volume off.”

He is the gum on the shoe of this nation’s progress. He’s the noisy go-kart going up and down the street on an otherwise peaceful morning. He’s the obnoxious neighbor with the constant pool parties and loud music. He’s the guy in the express lane with more than 10 things. He’s the jerk in the left lane doing 15 mph under the speed limit while having his turn signal and brake lights on going uphill.

My grandmother taught me that there is some good in all people. But not this guy. There is nothing good about him.

He’s every bad thing I’ve ever experienced times a trillion.

He is worse than all those you sited – as we can bypass them, call the cops on them or just plan ignore them – what this arrogant & narcissistic man is doing is the systematic destruction of the most free and greatest Nation in the World – for his own power and pleasure.

“He is the gum on the shoe of this nation’s progress”

“he is doing all of this intentionally to destroy America and ‘remake’ it in his ‘image’ of what it ’should’ be”

This is the part I can’t wrap my brain around.

That’s why I always return to the idea that he is the puppet of others.

But we also see other people with the similar breathtaking arrogance. Actually, it’s rather common on the left. Gore and Carter are the two most prominent, but what about that 34 year-old kid who was the car czar for a while (and may still be). And then there is Pelosi, Maxime Waters, Drooling Barney, and on and on. No amount of information dents their rock-sold confidence of how right they are. There is no evidence they cannot ignore.

What kind of upbringing breeds that kind of hubris? Einstein wasn’t that confident and the problems he worked on were trivial compared to human systems with infinite inputs and infinite outcomes. How do people who are wrong nearly 100% of the time, demonstrably so, remain so convinced that they are so right that they are willing to gamble the fate of hundreds of millions of people on their own ignorance? Even if I knew with absolute certainty that I was right about something, I couldn’t impose it on hundreds of millions of people. The risk is simply too great.

I think each person I’ve mentionned in this post is profoundly profoundly mentally ill.

  11. proreason

How many people will die this year because of the government’s incompetance preparing the H1N1 Vaccines?

    http://townhall.com/columnists.....competence

“One year ago, the government told us that we would have hundreds of millions of vaccinations available. Then, over the summer, the prediction was that 40 million would be on hand by the end of October.

Last month, the estimate was scaled back to 28 million. And, as of late last week, only 11.5 million had been delivered, leaving tens of millions vulnerable and, tragically, likely leading to hundreds of preventable deaths. Given the tendency of the virus to strike the young, many of those deaths will be among children. ”

    hmmm

first hundeds of millions of vaccines.

Then 40 million by the end of October

Then 28 million by the end of October

Something over 11.5 million were delivered.

    And who gets the shots?

Where I live, prisoners are first in line.

And don’t say that doesn’t make sense. It makes perfect sense to Obamy and his criminal cabal.

Meanwhile, my wife, whose immune system is highly vulnerable from childhood polio, and who has already had pneumonia twice this year, waits.

      Yeah……Right!

I’d love to pull the plug on the brain dead congress and pull us out of our misery!!

    • Rusty Shackleford

Looking at it another way, Pro: Prisoners are true money-vacuums. Cost about 30 to 40k a year to house and keep a prisoner. Now, if you have them get sick and go to the infirmary, they cost even more. So a flu shot for them is a good idea in that respect. On the other hand, from a strictly ideological point of view it makes no sense ‘tal. They are there to be punished, not “cared for”. Many inmates get expensive dental work done while “in the joint”. Not to mention heart pills, cholesterol meds, etc. All paid for by tax dollars. I do understand the obligation to at least keep a bad guy alive while they serve out their sentence, but gee whillikers.

It’s one of those contradictions in our society that nobody seems to want to uncover to deeply or inquire about too loudly.

Also seems like every crook in the world knows that the US has the best prisons to go to, if you have to go to prison.

    • proreason

I don’t have an issue providing health care to prisoners.

Yet, somehow for a potentially life saving treatment, first in line doesn’t quite feel right to me for some reason.

But then, my wife has had pneumonia twice this year and can catch a cold from tv.

So I must be a racist.

(side note: a private clinic in my area somehow got 20,000 doses of the vaccine and is selling shots at $20 a shot. We learned about it Saturday morning, but they are closed on the weekend. The government is attempting to shut the clinic down and I expect they will succeed by monday morning.)

A little analysis from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Health care tax could hit home

Proposal for high-cost plans may adversely affect region

    By Guy Boulton

Missing from the sweeping health care reform bill unveiled last week by House Democrats was the Senate Finance Committee’s proposal to tax high-cost insurance plans.

That proposal is widely seen as a small step toward ending one of the inequities in the tax code – that people who get health coverage through an employer don’t pay taxes on that benefit.

Economists across the political spectrum say that taxing the most expensive health insurance plans would begin to address that discrepancy – and help slow the rise in health care spending.

Yet the proposal also faces fierce opposition – and that is an example of the challenge Congress faces as its tries to overhaul the health care system.

It has been billed as a tax on “Cadillac” health plans. But make no mistake: It would affect a lot of people who drive Chevys.

The tax could have a bigger effect on areas with higher health care costs, such as southeastern Wisconsin, than other parts of the state or country. And more people could be subject to the tax with each passing year.

At the same time, the proposal could make people more conscious of the real cost of health benefits. And that could put more pressure on doctors and hospitals to become more efficient.

While omitted from the House version, the proposed tax was included in the Senate Finance Committee bill. The House and Senate bills eventually must be combined before being sent to the president for his signature.

The Senate proposal would limit the tax break on employer health plans that cost more than $21,000 for family coverage and $8,000 for single coverage starting in 2013.

The threshold would be higher for high-risk occupations, such as law enforcement, and for health plans that include early retirees. For the first three years, it also would be higher for 17 states with high health care costs.

The proposed 40% tax would apply only to the amount above the threshold. It technically is an excise tax on health insurers and administrators, but ultimately the cost would be passed on to employees.

The proposal is projected to generate $201 billion in revenue over 10 years – almost one-fourth of the total cost of the Senate Finance Committee’s proposed bill.

It also would be a tax on a benefit that now is tax free, and more than half of the Democrats in the House have made clear their opposition to the proposal.

“The hardest thing for a politician in American society is to take something away from people,” said Mordecai Lee, a professor of governmental affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. …

    http://www.jsonline.com/business/68432292.html

So I guess if you make “less than $250,000″ that 40% tax would not actually be a tax increase since that would break Obama’s promise, and surely he wouldn’t do that

The rush to redistribute income is truly unstoppable:

“That is definitely part of this,” said Paul Van de Water, a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which focuses on fiscal policy and public programs that affect people with low and moderate incomes.

To Van de Water, taxing high-cost health plans and using the money to help offset the cost of subsidizing coverage for people who are without health insurance is a matter of priorities.

Priorities, not a horrific bastardization of the principles the country was founded upon.

    From a bemused Associated Press:

Ford surprises with earnings of nearly $1B in 3rd qtr; forecasts ’solidly profitable’ 2011

By Tom Krisher and Dee-Ann Durbin

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Ford, the only Detroit automaker to dodge direct government aid and bankruptcy court, surprised investors with net income of nearly $1 billion in the third quarter and forecast a “solidly profitable” 2011.

The automaker said Monday earnings were fueled by U.S. market share gains, cost cuts and the Cash for Clunkers program, which drew flocks of buyers to showrooms this summer. Ford’s shares rose 68 cents, or 9.8 percent, to $7.68 in morning trading.

The latest results signal that Ford’s turnaround is on more solid ground. The company lost more than $14.6 billion last year and hasn’t posted a full-year profit since 2005. While it made a profit in the second quarter, that was mainly due to debt reductions that cut its interest payments.

Ford, based in Dearborn, Mich., reported third-quarter net income of $997 million, or 29 cents per share. Its profit forecast for 2011 was a step above previous guidance of break-even or better for the year.

Ford’s key North American car and truck division posted a pretax profit of $357 million, the division’s first quarter in the black since early 2005. Ford cited higher pricing, lower material costs and increased market share for the improvement.

Excluding one-time items, Ford earned 26 cents per share, blowing away analysts’ expectations of a loss of 12 cents.

The earnings came despite an $800 million revenue drop. But Ford said it cut costs by $1 billion during the quarter, accomplished through layoffs in North America and Europe, reduced pension and retiree health care costs and improvements in productivity and product development.

Chief financial officer Lewis Booth said the company took in $1.3 billion more than it spent in the quarter, an improvement over its $1 billion cash burn in the second quarter.

“That’s a huge deal,” Booth said.

Ford’s plan to create demand and get better prices for its products, coupled with cost cuts, gave the company confidence that it will make money in 2011, Booth said.

But Ford still faces obstacles in its turnaround. Last week, workers overwhelmingly rejected an agreement with the United Auto Workers that would have brought Ford’s labor costs in line with rivals General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC. Workers objected to clauses limiting their right to strike and freezing entry-level wages, and felt the company was healthy enough and didn’t need further concessions.

The rejected deal also would have changed rules so skilled tradesmen such as electricians and pipefitters work in teams and perform more than one task.

Rejection of the deal isn’t likely to place Ford at an immediate cost disadvantage to its crosstown rivals because savings from the concessions are longer-term, said Gary Chaison, a professor of labor relations at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. Neither the company nor the UAW has released any cost savings numbers.

The third-quarter profit makes it extremely unlikely that the company will push to head back to the bargaining table before the current UAW contract expires in the fall of 2011, and union leaders also are unlikely to take another deal to the membership, Chaison said.

“I think the company has no credibility asking for concessions now, and I think the leadership is quite embarrased for making a case for concessions,” he said. …

A reminder of why the American auto industry is doomed in the long term:

But Ford still faces obstacles in its turnaround. Workers objected to clauses limiting their right to strike and freezing entry-level wages, and felt the company was healthy enough and didn’t need further concessions.

Yes, we couldn’t possibly have employees work in teams – that could lead to thinking and reasoning and other activities that are bad for labor unions.

    • proreason

If Ford stops the unions, Ford will become one of the greatest success stories of all time.

If Ford caves, it will go bankrupt in a few months….which of course, will be just fine with the fascists and unions.

If Ford caves, it is likely to lose up to 50% of their market immediately. That is the rough proximate number of people who will never buy a Ford again.

All this, of course, is predicated on the assumption that the fascists do not close down Toyota and the other foreign manufacturers. I wouldn’t put that past them.

by Edouard Guihaire Nov 2, 2009

WASHINGTON (AFP) – …Since the November 4 poll, Obama’s visage has been everywhere, conspicuously on the streets of the nation’s capital

A quick look around downtown Washington confirms that Obama trinkets are still on sale, but several street hawkers have found little point in displaying the t-shirts, posters, and “Yes We Can” buttons.

“They stay in the truck,” grumbled a vendor who identified himself as Dick, as he pointed to a rusty vehicle behind him.

In July, his popularity dipped even below that of predecessor George W. Bush in the same period of his presidency.

“In general, this puts Obama’s current ratings slightly below average for all US presidents since World War II,” Newport told AFP, ..

This is not for want of supply: from a life-size cardboard cutout, to gold jewelry, to a bottle of special vintage champagne bearing the president’s name, the list of Obama souvenirs, from cheap trinkets to high-end memorabilia, is long.

McClatchy: Supreme Court seeks White House views on hiring illegals
By Michael Doyle Nov 2, 2009

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration will enter the politically tricky immigration arena, courtesy of the Supreme Court .

On Monday, the court asked the administration for its views in a challenge to an Arizona law that punishes companies for hiring illegal aliens.

In a closed-door conference Friday whose outcome was released Monday, the justices agreed to ask Obama’s solicitor general, Elena Kagan , to submit a brief outlining the administration’s views. The justices will review this brief before they decide whether to take up the case.

During last year’s presidential campaign, then-candidate Barack Obama declared that the proliferation of state immigration laws “underscores the need for comprehensive immigration reform so local communities do not continue to take matters into their own hands.”

The Arizona governor who signed the state law was Janet Napolitano , who now serves the Obama administration as the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security .

    Political: The pro-Fox Democrats
by Daniel Libit Nov 1 2009

Democratic pundit Bob Beckel…in the midst of the White House war against the cable network, some of his liberal friends think that’s six years too many…They invited him to lunch the other day for an intervention:

“It sucks,” says Democratic direct-mail consultant Liz Chadderdon, a regular on the network. “It is very, very tough to be a Democrat on Fox.”

Fox is where the viewers are — No. 1 in the prime-time news ratings and drawing more than twice as many viewers on weeknights as either MSNBC or CNN.

Lanny Davis, former White House counsel for Bill Clinton,… said that Fox was the fairest of the cable networks in its treatment of Hillary Clinton.

And now, he insists, the claims of bias directed at Fox are overstated, at least insofar as they come from devotees of one of its competitors.

Estrich encouraged Democratic pollster Doug Schoen to join Fox Nation …
“They are the most professional network of any I have dealt with,” he said. “If you are a Democrat who wants to deliver mindless talking points on Fox, it’s probably best to go to MSBNC and hope you get a chance to recite them. I think Fox encourages critical views of all sides,…

Beckel believes Fox viewers are more open to the Democratic side of the story than stereotypes might suggest. And indeed, a 2008 Pew Research survey found that while almost half of viewers who regularly watch Fox News identify as Republican or Republican leaning, 39 percent tip Democratic and 12 percent have no stated angle at all. …

STOLEN VALOR ACT: Purple Heart claim challenged

VA employee also accused of taking $180,000 in benefits

By CARRI GEER THEVENOT and KEITH ROGERS
    LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

    http://www.lvrj.com/news/purple-heart-claim
    -challenged-67506152.html

A Veterans Affairs employee from Las Vegas was indicted this week in a case of stolen valor and stolen benefits.

The case against David M. Perelman, who claimed to have received a Purple Heart medal, is the first known prosecution in Nevada under the Stolen Valor Act of 2005, which outlawed false claims of military honor. According to the indictment, Perelman claimed he had been wounded in combat in Vietnam, when in fact he had been wounded by a self-inflicted gunshot in 1991.

“The Purple Heart is a symbol of heroism, patriotism, honor, and symbolic of one’s sacrifice and duty to our country,” said Daniel Bogden, the U.S. attorney for Nevada. “Those who seek to diminish the sacrifice of others by wearing the Purple Heart when not authorized to do so will be vigorously prosecuted. Federal law calls for imprisonment for up to one year for wearing the Purple Heart when not authorized by law.”

Perelman also is accused of stealing about $180,000 in monthly disability benefits from the Veterans Administration, now known as Veterans Affairs, from 1995 until July 2009. He is 56.

Attempts to reach Perelman for comment Thursday were unsuccessful. He faces two charges: theft of government property, a felony, and the unauthorized wearing of a military medal, a misdemeanor.

“I’m glad that finally Mr. Bogden is going to prosecute a stolen valor case,” said retired Army Lt. Col. Bill Anton, president of Special Forces Association Chapter 51. “Veterans are happy that he is finally addressing this, and we support him totally.”

Anton spent a year trying to persuade Bogden to pursue a stolen valor case against another veteran, Jacob Cruze.

In e-mails to the Review-Journal in 2006, Bogden confirmed that his criminal chief had reviewed the Cruze matter and determined it was appropriately handled by Las Vegas police, “who cited Cruze for unlawfully using specialized veteran vehicle license plates and confiscated all improper medals, uniforms and indicia.”

Bogden also wrote, “Considering our limited resources and manning we did not feel that additional misdemeanor charges … were necessary since the matter had already been addressed by local authorities.”

But Anton, a disabled Vietnam War veteran, said federal charges are needed to deter phony war heroes.

According to the indictment against Perelman, he falsely represented to the Veterans Administration that he legitimately had been awarded a Purple Heart when he knew he had fraudulently obtained the award by representing that he had been wounded in combat in Vietnam.

Perelman also knew, according to the indictment, “that he had been wounded by a self-inflicted gunshot in 1991, long after he had been discharged from the military, and that he had not served in combat in Vietnam.”

The document accuses Perelman of wearing the Purple Heart without authorization in August 2008.

John Bright, director of the Veterans Affairs Southern Nevada Healthcare System, said he was “stunned as anybody else” to learn of the allegations of Perelman’s false claims after a Veterans Affairs inspector general’s investigation.

“He’s been a pretty decent employee,” Bright said Thursday. “We haven’t had any problems with him. Of course he’s not going to work for us any more.”

Bright said the VA hired Perelman as a clerk about three years ago after he had worked as a volunteer for the agency.

Perelman sought employment saying that he was a disabled veteran, and he was cleared for hiring following a background check.

“There was no way for us to have known,” Bright said.

He said Perelman has submitted his resignation; his last day in the VA job will be next week.

As for the indictment’s allegation that Perelman embezzled $180,000 in VA disability benefits, Bright said, “It’s appalling. Apparently there are a lot of folks out there doing this type of stuff.”

Records from the Military Order of the Purple Heart list Perelman as the organization’s Nevada commander in late 2008.

He is the second former local official of the order to have questions surface about lying about military service.

Last year, Irving Joseph Schwartz, who had been a national service officer and past commander of the organization’s Chapter 711 in Las Vegas, admitted to former Rep. Jon Porter’s staff that he had fabricated his role in World War II after his claims for valor medals had stood without question for most of his life.

Porter had intended to name a post office after Schwartz until the Review-Journal raised questions about his military records.

    Schwartz died in July.

John Bircher, national spokesman for the Military Order of the Purple Heart, noted that Perelman hasn’t been found guilty yet.

If he is found guilty, his membership with the organization will be revoked, Bircher said.

“The Military Order of the Purple Heart feels strongly about the Stolen Valor Act, especially regarding those who falsely wear a Purple Heart,” he said.

A Web site for the Air Force’s 8th Aerial Port Squadron during the Vietnam War profiles Perelman’s 1971 tour with photographs and a Purple Heart citation.

A summons has been issued for Perelman, who was indicted Wednesday. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Nov. 13 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lawrence Leavitt.

Anton said he has encountered Perelman several times over the past three years and knew him as a Purple Heart recipient who had served in the Air Force in Vietnam.

Perelman said he had been wounded by shrapnel during a rocket attack in Vietnam, said Anton, who was not surprised to hear about the criminal allegations.

“I didn’t think the guy was real,” Anton said.

He said most veterans have honor and integrity.

“That’s something that’s truly lacking in this country.”

Outing numb nuts such as this is what needs to happen more.
I’d love to see Lt. Kerry, Murtha and a select group of other politicians face the same Inquisition over the medals they tout and flaunt when it suits them.
But seeing they got power now they do the C.Y.A. in their sleep.

    Beyond disgusting!!

Planned Parenthood Director Quits After Watching Abortion on Ultrasound

    By Joseph Abrams

The former director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in southeast Texas says she had a “change of heart” after watching an abortion last month — and she quit her job and joined a pro-life group in praying outside the facility.

Abby Johnson, 29, used to escort women from their cars to the clinic in the eight years she volunteered and worked for Planned Parenthood in Bryan, Texas. But she says she knew it was time to leave after she watched a fetus “crumple” as it was vacuumed out of a patient’s uterus in September.

‘When I was working at Planned Parenthood I was extremely pro-choice,” Johnson told FoxNews.com. But after seeing the internal workings of the procedure for the first time on an ultrasound monitor, “I would say there was a definite conversion in my heart … a spiritual conversion.”

Johnson said she became disillusioned with her job after her bosses pressured her for months to increase profits by performing more and more abortions, which cost patients between $505 and $695.

“Every meeting that we had was, ‘We don’t have enough money, we don’t have enough money — we’ve got to keep these abortions coming,’” Johnson told FoxNews.com. “It’s a very lucrative business and that’s why they want to increase numbers.”

A spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood told FoxNews.com that it offers a range of services at it 850 health centers nationwide, providing pregnancy tests, vaccinations and women’s health services, “including wellness exams, breast and cervical cancer screenings, contraception, and STD testing and treatment.”

“Planned Parenthood’s focus is on prevention,” wrote Diane Quest, the group’s National Media Director. “Nationwide, more than 90% of the health care Planned Parenthood affiliates provide is preventive in nature,” explaining that a “core component the organization’s mission is to help women plan healthy pregnancies and prevent unintended pregnancies.”

But Johnson said her bosses told her to change her “priorities” and focus on abortions, which she said made money for the office at a time when the recession has left them hurting.

“For them there’s not a lot of money in education,” she said. “There’s as not as much money in family planning as there is abortion.

Without a doctor in residence, she said, her clinic offered abortions only two days a month, but the doctor could perform 30 to 40 procedures on each day he was there. Johnson estimated that each abortion could net the branch about $350, adding up to more than $10,000 a month.

“The majority of the money was going to the facility,” she said.

Johnson said she never got any orders to increase profits in e-mails or letters, and had no way to prove her allegations about practices at the Bryan branch. She told FoxNews.com that pressure came in personal interactions with her regional manager from the larger Houston office.

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,571215,00.html

The Planned Parenthood supporters will of course seize on that, and of course Planned Parenthood is quick to note they’ve filed a restraining order against this woman and the anti-abortion group with which she’s now affiliated; funny how quickly judges sign off on that type of thing.

But astute readers will also note that Holocaust deniers are the first to claim that there was no written order from Hitler to exterminate the Jews, either.

That doesn’t mean the Holocaust did not occur, nor that this woman is lying in her assertions.

    U of A president’s pro-white, male student stance slammed

    By ALYSSA NOEL, SUN MEDIA

Hundreds of posters featuring the “femimenace” and other tongue-in-cheek images were put up around the University of Alberta campus last week in response to controversial comments made by the university’s president.

In an interview published Oct. 21, president Indira Samarasekera said she was concerned by Statistics Canada numbers that indicate women make up 58% of the student population at Canadian universities.

She went on to say a major worry is that 20 years from now “we will not have the benefit of enough male talent at the heads of companies and elsewhere.”

She also said she will be an “advocate” for young white men because, as a woman who is a visible minority, she “can be.”

The comments struck a chord with women’s studies major Derek Warwick and a group of students…

…“The biggest problem we had was just how her comments were creating this fear mongering (that the number of women enrolled in university) is increasing at a faster rate than men,” he said. “There was no mention of lower classes and women of colour, whose numbers are lower.”

    http://www.edmontonsun.com/new.....11186.html

A couple things deserve mention here. First, according to the World’s Best Universities rankings, (http://www.usnews.com/articles.....l?PageNr=2) which are based on the THE-QS World University Rankings, the University of Alberta ranks 4th in Canada and 59th in the world in 2009. It’s rare enough to see someone with authority in an educational system admit there’s gender bias, or to see anyone in any kind of authority speak up about “reverse” racism, and here we get two for the price of one, from a major institution.

Second, I can’t help but think it’s intentional that they find a young, white male (there’s a picture with the original news article) in women’s studies to dump on her observations. He even managed to pop in the right buzz words and minority-focused stance that take nothing away from the cold, hard facts. I’m sure he’ll find a nice academic position somewhere, insulated from the world, emerging periodically only to be quoted as an “expert” in some paper or other before slinking back inside to his classes and apologizing for his gender’s dominance throughout human history.

Even if everyone is ragging on president Samarasekera now, it’s nice to have a reminder that some people in power are able to sit up and take notice of the obvious.

When I see Ann Coulter or Sean Hannity BAYING across the television screen, I find it hard to take them seriously; I assume that they must be saying what they do primarily to boost book sales or ratings, although I do wonder who would spend their precisous evening with SUCH SOURPUSSES. When Democrats rush up to me at events and insist that we live in the worst of political times, that a CREEPING FASCISM IS CLOSING IT’S GRIP AROUND OUR THROATS, I may mention …a hundred years of lynching under several dozen adminsistrations as having been possibly worse, and take a deep breath.”

Not to be a downer, but we must now prepare for the liberal gloating: despite being ahead in the polls, Hoffman is going down in flames in NY 23, 45% to Owens’ 49%.

Even more depressing is Scozzafava still garnered 6% of the vote; naturally the media will claim that this proves that if conservatives had just kept their collective mouths shut they would have had a Republican win in the district, as conservatives wouldn’t have voted Democrat regardless of how much of a RINO Scozzafava is and how much she would have toed the Democrat party line anyway.

Perhaps Reagan conservatism is dead, given this is a district that hasn’t voted for a Democrat since the 1800s; neither of the vaunted GOP Governor victories was for a candidate who was anything but middle-of-the-road; the “anything Palin touches turns to defeat” comments are already starting on many a GOP site, let alone the liberal ones.

From Times Online: Father fled to Britain after running down daughter in in US ‘honour killing’
    Philippe Naughton Nov 3 2009

An Iraqi man who tried to flee to Britain from the United States after allegedly running down his daughter for being “too Westernised” faces a possible murder charge after she died from her injuries.

Arizona police said that Faleh Hassan Almaleki ran down Noor Faleh Almaleki, 20, and her boyfriend’s mother with his Jeep as the women crossed a car park in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria on October 20.

Noor died yesterday,.. The other woman, Amal Khalaf, was also seriously injured

Local newspapers reported that Mr Almaleki brought his family to live in Peoria in the mid-1990s. He became infuriated when his daughter married a man in Iraq but returned to Arizona to live with her boyfriend.

He then took a flight from Mexico City to London,

Interviewed on arrival, Mr Almaleki told UK Border Agency officers that he was planning to spend a week visiting cousins in Glasgow, but he was denied entry because he had only $400 (£245) cash with him and his nominated sponsor in the UK was unemployed.

AP: Obama coaxes states to change with school dollars
By Libby Quaid Nov 4 2009

WASHINGTON – One year after his election, President Barack Obama is coaxing states across the country to rewrite education laws and cut deals with unions

Obama is visiting Wisconsin, where lawmakers are poised to change a law to boost their state’s chances at $5 billion in education grants, the most money a president has ever had for overhauling schools.

Nine other states have taken similar steps, even though states can’t apply for the money yet and only a few states may end up getting grants.

Duncan had repeatedly warned that such restrictions would hurt a state’s chances at the money. The administration can’t really tell states and schools what to do, since education has been largely a state and local responsibility throughout the history of the U.S.

No president has ever had that much money for schools at his discretion. Only Duncan — not Congress — has control over who gets it. And only some states, perhaps 10 to 20, will actually get the money.

AP: British deaths raise questions about Afghan police
By Elena Becatoros And Deb Riechmann Nov 4 2009

KABUL – The killing of five British troops by a rogue Afghan policeman…
…its continued presence here is central to President Barack Obama’s strategy…

The five British soldiers, who had been advising Afghan policemen, were shot and killed Tuesday at a checkpoint

~~where they were living in the volatile southern province of Helmand.~~

Another six soldiers were wounded, as were two Afghan policemen when the soldiers returned fire, officials said.

In Washington, Defense Department press secretary Geoff Morrell defended Afghan forces…” it represents a rare and, luckily, thus far isolated incident….”

In October 2008, a policeman threw a grenade and opened fire on a U.S. foot patrol, killing one soldier.

The previous month, a policeman opened fire at a police station, killing a soldier and wounding three before he was fatally shot.

A Defense Department Inspector General report…”Unlike the Afghan National Army, which is the most respected institution in the Afghan government, there is a wide consensus that many elements of the Afghan National Police are too corrupt, and too tied to politics and power brokers,” former Pentagon analyst Anthony Cordesman wrote last month.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai sought not to highlight the Afghan policeman’s role… said it was carried out by a member of the national police.

A corrected statement, released about an hour later, didn’t mention the police at all.

Karzai’s spokesman “…In the U.S., people shoot up people in a shopping mall,” ..” “There are crazy people everywhere.”

engaging Iran seems to be over but the Obama administration refuses to admit…

“neutralized” uranium can be changed back…concealed enriched uranium

      • President Barack Obama’s worldview insists that all problems are resolvable by talking and making concessions. He also fears confrontation.

      • The desire to keep Russia on board. But we know Russia won’t support sanctions and serious pressure on Iran…

So America’s policy is being held hostage by a president with no experience and little understanding of international affairs,…

Arab states must believe very firmly that the US is a reliable protector. Can they think this of Obama’s administration?

They don’t want to hear that he loves Islam and the Palestinians; they want to know he’ll fight. And doubting this, they’ll appease Iran.

… Iran’s increased power in having nuclear weapons will not consist merely of firing them off…the huge leap in the appeal of a seemingly mighty Iran and victorious Islamism to millions of Muslims who will join or support radical Islamist groups. .

U.S. Should Bar Funds for China-Backed Wind Farm, Schumer Says

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomb.....DMQ–

Kim Chipman Kim Chipman – 2 hrs 49 mins ago

Nov. 6 (Bloomberg) — The Obama administration should bar a $1.5 billion wind-farm project in Texas from receiving U.S. government stimulus funds because most of the power turbines would be made in China, Senator Charles Schumer said.

“The idea that stimulus funds would be used to create jobs overseas is quite troubling,” Schumer, a New York Democrat, wrote in a draft of a letter he said yesterday he would send to U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu. “I urge you to reject any request for stimulus money unless the high-value components, including the wind turbines, are manufactured in the United States.”

“I don’t care if the Chinese invest here and create jobs here: It’s where the jobs are that I care about,” Schumer told reporters yesterday in Washington. “I think if you told the other 99 senators about this the vast majority would agree with me.”

    AP:Obama: US must reverse course with Indians;
by Ben Feller Nov 5 2009

WASHINGTON – …”I get it. I’m on your side,” Obama told the largest gathering of tribal leaders in U.S. history.

He opened a conference that drew leaders from 386 tribal nations — and he ordered every Cabinet agency to take more steps

It comes as American Indians remain entrenched in a class-action lawsuit against the federal government, claiming the government has long swindled them out of land royalties.

he told his audience that he was like them: an “outsider” who grew up without a father, moved around a lot, and understood what it was like to struggle and be ignored.

“You will not be forgotten as long as I’m in this White House,” Obama said to a sustained ovation.

audience members pressed Obama …from more respect for sovereignty rights to environmental cleanup to concerns about offshore drilling…he pledged to enforce the laws of the land.

“For the next eight years — the next four years at least, let me not jump the gun,” Obama said, catching himself

agency officials and tribal leaders discussed problems facing American Indians, including economic development, education, health care, public safety and housing.

“We respect you as a man of your word,” responded Jefferson Keel, president of the National Congress of American Indians.

NRO reveals why the Health Scam is at least $1.5 Trillion more than we’ve been told:

“In Massachusetts, which has enacted what is essentially the Democrats’ health plan, mandatory premiums account for about 60 percent of overall costs, according to the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation. On-budget government spending is just 40 percent. By my count, mandatory premiums accounted for a similar share of the Clinton health plan’s projected cost.

So while the CBO estimates that the coverage expansions in the House Democrats’ legislation would trigger about $1 trillion of new federal spending over ten years, the actual cost of those coverage expansions is more like $2.5 trillion. ”

    http://article.nationalreview......amp;w=MA==

What this means is that the $1 trillion price tag doesn’t count $1.5 trillion in premium costs that the public will be forced to pay. This is an accounting trick. The CBO has agreed to not count the cost of premiums as government revenue. But it is still a cost to the public. Just not a “tax”, you see.

    So it’s 2.5 trillion, not 1 trillion.

And that does not count the fact that the 10 year period that is included has 10 years of other revernue, but only 6 years of costs (i.e., benefits). The article doesn’t discuss that but it amounts to another several hundred billion dollars.

So, the “official” estimate should be something like 2.7 to 3.0 trillion over 10 years. (For comparison purposes, the entire federal budget including Social Security, Medicare and the military was about 2.5 trillion per year before George Soros and Goldman Sachs tanked the economy to get Obamy elected).

But we also know, of course, from history, The 2.7 to 3.0 trillion will be low by at least a factor of 3, and probably a factor of 10.

So the cost of this bill to the country will be somewhere between 9 and 30 trillion dollars over 10 years, which could well be more than all of the rest of the federal budget.

    And that’s just for starters.

Redistribution. Aaaah, I love the smell of it in the morning.

The future of the US, from the UK as usual.

    From the UK Telegraph:

Benny Hill stamp was rejected by Royal Mail

The Royal Mail rejected a postage stamp featuring Benny Hill because his saucy antics contravened company policy on harassment in the workplace.

    By Anita Singh

The Benny Hill Show was one of several suggestions for a set of stamps commemorating the 50th anniversary of ITV. The series ran on ITV for 20 years and is best remembered for the closing credits in which Hill chased an assortment of scantily-clad women.

Newly released minutes from a Royal Mail committee meeting show that political correctness won the day when it came to selecting images to represent ITV comedy. “Benny Hill has been included in previous presentations but concerns were raised by our public relations team as it was in direct opposition to company’s policies on harassment in the workplace,” the minutes stated.

Instead, the committee chose a picture of a front door from the opening credits of Rising Damp. They also rejected images of Kenny Everett and Miss Piggy.

Bettine Le Beau, who appeared in dozens of Benny Hill sketches, described the Royal Mail’s decision as “absurd”. She said: “To have a jovial and loveable face such as Benny Hill, who has made made millions feel good with his humour and is appreciated by many all over the world, would have enhanced the Royal Mail.

“The Royal Mail has at present a rather unfavourable reputation and this makes me doubly angry with them.”

William Brown, contributing editor to the fan site Benny’s Place, said: “Frankly, it is a disgrace, but not a surprise. It is part of a politically motivated blacklist. It is what the Soviet Union did with dissidents by just airbrushing them out of history.” …

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/new.....-Mail.html

Not only is it a preview of the future of the US, we’ve also a preview of life under Pelosicare:

Separate minutes about a set of stamps on a gastronomic theme, issued in August 2005, reveal that images of ice cream, pizza and a full English breakfast were rejected on health grounds. “The mix of foods has been improved upon so that the majority featured were healthy foods, eg Chinese noodles, sushi, tagliatelle pasta and English apples. The chips and tea have been retained as popular to the British people,” the minutes said.

Remember, these are merely postage stamps.

    From a ticked off Reuters:

Flu shots for Wall Street stirs ire in New York

    By Bill Berkrot

NEW YORK (Reuters) – New York City health officials scrambled to explain themselves on Thursday in the wake of media reports about bankers who got scarce H1N1 flu vaccines through their employers.

Members of Congress fired off letters demanding immediate explanations and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminded state and city health officers of the need to make sure the most vulnerable people get shots first.

I am concerned that the distribution of the vaccine is resulting in favored treatment for the privileged,” New Jersey Democratic Representative Frank Pallone said.

A shortage of H1N1 vaccines has frayed nerves, and public health departments across the country say they will not be able to meet the bulk of the demand until December or January.

The CDC estimates swine flu has infected more than five million people and it is documented as having killed 1,000.

The federal government, which is buying the vaccines and distributing them for free to 62 state and city health departments, says 35.6 million doses have been made and packaged since production began.

Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd, a Democrat, released a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius saying he was “stunned” at the reports.

“I implore you to use whatever authorities you have to ensure that H1N1 vaccines already distributed but not yet used are promptly redirected to hospitals, schools, community health clinics, school-based health clinics, and pediatricians so that they can be made immediately available to at-risk members of the public as identified by the Department,” Dodd wrote.

CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden sent out a reminder to state and city health departments that distribute vaccine.

“I ask each of you to review your plans immediately and work to ensure that the maximum number of doses is delivered to those at greatest risk as rapidly as possible,” he wrote.

“I especially appreciate the many innovative ways you’ve found to reach them, including school-located vaccine clinics, special clinics for pregnant women, outreach to children with special needs, and making vaccine available to community- and faith-based organizations serving these high-risk populations.” …

    http://www.reuters.com/article.....QI20091105

Government-run health care is already here: How dare employers who have legally obtained vaccine dare administer it to those the Government hath not deemed worthy!!!

    I love this:

I am concerned that the distribution of the vaccine is resulting in favored treatment for the privileged,” New Jersey Democratic Representative Frank Pallone said.

I wonder if perhaps the President, his cabinet and/or members of Congress have all declined to receive the vaccine in favor of those in higher risk groups?

    Stop laughing…
