Man who tracked Che for CIA awarded $1 billion in lawsuit

MIAMI — In what may be the largest civil judgment ever against the Cuban government, a Miami-Dade judge on Friday awarded more than $1 billion..
    .
Villoldo …will now attempt to collect the money from the current and frozen assets of the Cuban government in financial institutions throughout the world.

The largest amount identified by the Treasury Department is in a New York bank account … Alters said he believes there is $321 million remaining in the U.S. account.
…. a newly found source of Cuban cash: bank accounts linked to Castro found in Spain, which reportedly hold more than $3 billion.

The elder Villoldo,.. returned to Cuba, briefly practicing law before deciding to open a General Motors car dealership and distribution center.

.. Cuba’s Banco Nacional, immediately began dismantling all traces of capitalism and eyed Villoldo’s General Motors distributorship.

The dealership was looted then seized. And Guevara systematically began harassing the elder Villoldo and his sons, who were later arrested, interrogated and threatened with el paredon — the firing squad.

He became an officer in the U.S. Army by direct commission of President John F. Kennedy…, Villoldo helped track down Guevara for the CIA…..

…Brothers to the Rescue ..collected about half the award from frozen Cuban assets in New York.

When the Bush administration pulled this, the MSM howled endlessly about them “shredding the Constitution”. Fast forward a year and ho-hum, the AP reluctantly puts the story out on a very slow news day hoping the ignorant masses will overlook the story.
    From the AP via MyWay;

Gov’t refuses to release documents in wiretap case

    By JIM ABRAMS

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Obama administration insists it has no obligation to provide access to a top secret document in a wiretapping case, setting up a showdown next week with the judge who ordered it released.

Justice Department lawyers, in a response Friday with the U.S. District Court in San Francisco, also argued that Judge Vaughn Walker had no cause to penalize the government over its refusal to turn over the document.

Walker on May 22 threatened to punish the administration for withholding the document, which he ordered given to lawyers suing the government over its warrantless wiretapping program.

The judge has ordered department lawyers to appear before his court Wednesday to make the case why he should not award damages to the now-defunct Oregon chapter of the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation. That group is challenging the wiretapping program.

In its response, the department said that in this case “disclosure of classified information – even under protective order – would create intolerable risks to national security.”

The filing said President Barack Obama has authorized access to classified information on a “need-to-know” basis and argued that the government “cannot be sanctioned for its determination that plaintiffs do not have a need to know classified information.”

The Al-Haramain case has been a focal point for civil liberties groups questioning the legality of the warrantless wiretapping program, and has become one of several instances where the current administration has taken its cue from the Bush administration in citing national security as justification for keeping secrets.

Attorney General Eric Holder has ordered a review of all state secrets used by the Bush administration to protect anti-terrorism programs from lawsuits. But the Obama administration is also fighting the court-ordered release of prisoner-abuse photos and is reviving, in a revised form, military tribunals where suspected terrorists have limited access to information.

The Bush administration inadvertently turned over the top secret document to Al-Haramain lawyers, who claimed it proved illegal wiretapping by the National Security Agency.

The document was returned to the government, and the lawyers have argued they need the document back to prove their case.

The Treasury Department in 2004 designated the charity as an organization that supports terrorism.

  3. Don’t stand up and be counted … but keep those benefits coming for illegals. From the LA Times, desperate for readership..

U.S. census sparks feud over the counting of illegal immigrants

In a high-stakes battle that could affect California’s share of federal funding and political representation, immigrant activists are vowing to combat efforts by a national Latino clergy group to persuade 1 million illegal immigrants to boycott the 2010 U.S. census.

The Washington, D.C.-based National Coalition of Latino Clergy & Christian Leaders, which says it represents 20,000 Latino churches in 34 states, recently announced that a quarter of its 4 million members were prepared to join the boycott as a way to intensify pressure for legalization and to protect themselves from government scrutiny.

“Before being counted, we need to be legalized,” said the Rev. Miguel Rivera, the coalition’s chairman and founder.

But the boycott call has infuriated many Latino organizations…

According to a study in 2003, California’s sizable illegal immigrant population allowed it to gain three House seats it might otherwise not have received. The state’s illegal immigrant population also caused Indiana, Michigan and Mississippi to each lose one of their seats and prevented Montana from gaining a seat.

The study by the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington, D.C.-based research group that promotes immigration restrictions, also argued that the illegal immigrant population skewed the “one man, one vote” principle in elections…

Back in 1988, the effect on apportionment, which also affects the Electoral College, prompted a lawsuit by 40 members of Congress, Pennsylvania and the Federation for American Immigration Reform to prevent the Census Bureau from counting illegal immigrants. The complaint was dismissed by the U.S. Supreme Court for lack of standing.

“People who have no right to be in this country should not be counted,” said federation President Dan Stein. “It’s awfully hard to explain to U.S. citizens why they keep losing political representation to states like California because of people who broke immigration laws.”

… Rivera acknowledged that his coalition endorsed George W. Bush in 2004 and slightly favored Republican presidential nominee John McCain over Democrat Barack Obama by a vote of 52% to 48% last year. But he denied that the boycott was aimed at aiding Republicans.

He said his group was concerned that federal funds obtained in part through the counting of illegal immigrants would be used against them to increase arrests and harassment by local law enforcement.

Rivera also said he wanted to use the boycott as a way to pressure Congress to pass legislation offering legalization to illegal immigrants.

So far, his group appears to have gained little traction in California…

    http://www.latimes.com/news/lo.....7804.story

“Before being counted we need to be legalized?” Say what???!!!

No wonder you all hate California … really, I’m NOT happy about the obviously unfair way this state has managed to acquire as many Congresspeople as it has. So that number isn’t determined by the number of legal residents of a given area, it’s all bodies regardless of source or whether they are here legally (birth or resident alien, and I do wish there were a way to distinguish between anchor babies and those born of U.S. citizens or legal resident aliens) or illegally.

If I were residing in another country illegally I’d sure as heck be worried I’d be hassled by that nation’s authorities, and it’s certainly that nation’s right to hassle me. Why should any person in the U.S. without proper documentation expert anything less?

  4. A very long article, but I encourage you to take the time to read it. There is hope as far as educating children, moving away from the kumbaya liberal way … another LA Times article.

Spitting in the eye of mainstream education

Not many schools in California recruit teachers with language like this: “We are looking for hard working people who believe in free market capitalism. . . . Multicultural specialists, ultra liberal zealots and college-tainted oppression liberators need not apply.”

That, it turns out, is just the beginning of the ways in which American Indian Public Charter and its two sibling schools spit in the eye of mainstream education. These small, no-frills, independent public schools in the hardscrabble flats of Oakland sometimes seem like creations of television’s “Colbert Report.” They mock liberal orthodoxy with such zeal that it can seem like a parody.

School administrators take pride in their record of frequently firing teachers they consider to be underperforming. Unions are embraced with the same warmth accorded “self-esteem experts, panhandlers, drug dealers and those snapping turtles who refuse to put forth their best effort,” to quote the school’s website.

Students, almost all poor, wear uniforms and are subject to disciplinary procedures redolent of military school. One local school district official was horrified to learn that a girl was forced to clean the boys’ restroom as punishment…

Not surprisingly, many Bay Area liberals have a hard time embracing an educational philosophy that proudly proclaims that it “does not preach or subscribe to the demagoguery of tolerance.”

… At American Indian, the largest ethnic group is Asian, followed by Latinos and African Americans. Some of the schools’ critics contend that high-scoring Asian Americans are driving the test scores, but blacks and Latinos do roughly as well — in fact, better on some tests…

On Tuesday, American Indian’s high school will graduate its first senior class. All 18 students plan to attend college in the fall, 10 at various UC campuses, one at MIT and one at Cornell.

… American Indian attracts academically motivated students, relentlessly (and unapologetically) teaches to the test, wrings more seat time out of every school day, hires smart young teachers, demands near-perfect attendance, piles on the homework, refuses to promote struggling students to the next grade and keeps discipline so tight that there are no distractions or disruptions. Summer school is required.

… All American Indian students have 90 minutes of English and 90 minutes of math a day.

… All students at American Indian take Algebra 1 in eighth grade, and the school prides itself on its math achievement. Last year, every eighth grader scored “proficient” or better on California’s state algebra test. Statewide, only half the eighth graders even took algebra and fewer than half of those scored “proficient” or better…

Those of you unfamiliar with Oakland (California) may not realize what a lost hood that city is (it’s where a wanted felon who is now linked by DNA to several rapes gunned down four cops before he was finally removed from existence) and the fact that something this positive happens there is a very big deal.

Baby steps … eventually someone in education will take note of this school’s success.

“eventually someone in education will take note of this school’s success”

No they won’t. They will suppress it.

Education is controlled by people with a political agenda. And education isn’t on the menu.

    • Liberals Make Great Speedbumps

“American Indian will develop students to be “productive members in a free market capitalist society.”

At the rate we’re going they’ll have to re-locate after graduation.

Obama Calls My Church One of “Those Speculators”

I ran into an old timer from my church yesterday. Ken’s retired who like me served on our congregation’s finance committee. A little back ground:

Built in 1821, this “typical” little white church sits at the heart of what was once a little Dutch farming town. In addition to the church building, sits its fellowship hall, the old parsonage & an ancient cemetery all on about six acres within what has become among the nations’ most valuable property.

More recent arrivals have since spotted the town’s proximity to New York City. Due to the lack of municipal water & sewer systems, its multi acre zoning a direct result of the practicalities of managing some distance between one’s drinking water from the property’s septic systems). With the wealthy from Wall Street, Sports, Music & Movies, the town’s per capita income has become among the nations highest. Unfortunately, the less than 200 members of the188 year old congregation are mostly retirees & town’s people (painters, shop owners, the men & women who staff the volunteer fire department) on fixed incomes who barely manage to pay their property taxes, upkeep & living expenses. And so, while the Catholic Church down the street churns $10,000 – $14,000 a week in offerings, this little parish barely takes in $1,800 falling hundreds of dollars behind its needs every week.

Over the years, the charity of some more wealthy aging members made gifts to the church enabling the congregation to live off the interest of what became about $400,000 in bonds & stocks…$125,000 OF WHICH WAS GM CORPORATE BONDS, which are now essentially worth less than the paper these certificates are printed on.

So, here is one example of what our President, Mr. Barack H. Obama, has called “those speculators”; a “typical” little white church with an aging congregation; for many their only support; who shrug their shoulders in resignation as much as in bewilderment over what has happened to their country’s investor laws that were supposed to protect them but were overruled by the stroke of a pen, or less by their President.

I’m not sure if I am the only one who sees the irony in this little church having a relatively young preacher, a graduate of Princeton yet that proudly supported & voted for our even younger feckless leader, Mr. Barack H. Obama. Alas, given the denial that abounds America these days, I probably am.

I’ve used this analogy before, but our country under the unsteady hand of Captain Obama is like the Titanic. Though the ship’s engineer knew the vessel was doomed the moment it struck the iceberg, its captain believed he could maneuver it to safe harbor while the passengers went on into the night celebrating, drinking & dancing as if all would be well. This nation is approaching that moment that only the lead character of “Titanic”, the movie, Jack put so clearly…

“This is it Rose! Hold on! Don’t Let Go of Me!”

Alas, all we will have in the end will be ourselves…shivering alone & adrift into the abyss.

Nearer My God to Thee indeed.

It will soon be effectively illegal to purchase electronics in Wisconsin because there’s no way the manufacturers will play by their rules.

From the (Madison) Wisconsin State Journal:

Bill would require manufacturers to recycle electronics

    By Ron Seely

State Rep. Spencer Black, D-Madison, found plenty of justification for a proposed state electronics waste law just a few blocks from his West Side home two weeks ago. He recounted trying to drop off some old computer parts at a nearby recycling event and getting stuck — in a traffic jam caused by people trying to drop off discarded computers and TVs.

“Anybody who experienced that traffic jam,” Black said, “or who saw the mountains of old electronics has to realize there is a tremendous amount of this material out there.”

Most electronics are disposed of in landfills, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency, with only 18 percent being recycled. That’s a problem because of the toxic materials that are found in many electronic products.

Black will preside over a hearing on a proposed electronics recycling law before his Assembly Natural Resources Committee on Wednesday. The bill, which already passed the Senate environment committee, is scheduled to be taken up at a hearing that begins at 9:30 a.m. in Room 417 North in the Capitol.

Proponents are optimistic that the bill, which has been introduced but stalled the last two years, will be approved this year. That optimism is fueled partly by the Legislature being dominated now by Democrats who have favored the proposal. But Black said there is also increased understanding that requiring recycling of such waste is more necessary than ever.

“The need for this bill is greater than ever,” Black said, “especially with the changeover of TVs to digital.” …

    http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/453151

Hmmm… the crowds at the recycling event would imply that consumers are already using the programs in place, would it not?

    But no, legislation is required.

Here’s what they have in store for every manufacturer:

Under the Wisconsin proposal, beginning May 1, 2010, electronics manufacturers would not be allowed to sell their products — TVs, computers (including laptops) and printers, computer peripherals, digital video players and recorders — in the state unless they:

    • Register with the state DNR.

    • Arrange for the collection and recycling of eligible electronic devices.

    • Submit annual reports on the weight of devices sold to individuals in the state and the weight of devices collected by or on behalf of the manufacturer for recycling.

    • Pay certain fees, including an annual registration fee of $5,000 (less for manufacturers selling fewer than 100 devices a year in Wisconsin).

A manufacturer would be required to recycle 80 percent of the total weight of electronics it sold in the state during the year. If a manufacturer failed to reach that goal, it would be required to pay a shortfall fee.

Among the groups opposing the bill is TechAmerica, an electronics manufacturing association. The organization has called the proposal “unrealistic, unnecessary, and unsustainable.”

Indeed – but why worry about corporations that sell some of the few things Americans are still willing to buy?

Why do I suspect manufacturers will simply stop selling product in Wisconsin instead?

Legislators must realize these devices are private property, and we can in no way compel citizens to return obsolete products, let alone according to some statutory schedule,” Longanecker said. “Penalizing manufacturers for the actions or inactions of others raises many legal and constitutional concerns.

It would be funny if it weren’t quite so sad.

When’s the last time you saw liberals decrying the tactics of ALF or ELF or for that matter, Muslims decrying the tactics of radical fundamentalist terrorists?

    From Fox News:

Pro-Life Leaders Denounce Murder of Abortion Doctor George Tiller

Leaders of the anti-abortion movement gathered in front of the Supreme Court Monday morning to denounce the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller, who was gunned down Sunday while attending church in Wichita, Kan.

The pro-life activists also used the platform to blast President Obama’s abortion policies and strongly question the beliefs of his Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor.

“It is immoral and it is unchristian,” Rev. Rob Schenck of the National Clergy Council said of Tiller’s murder. He said the reaction to it “becomes a greater setback to the pro-life movement than anything the so-called pro-choice movement could do.”

“We call on President Obama and the [congressional leaders] not to use this tragedy for political gain,” added Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalitions.

Tiller was one of few American doctors who specialized in late-term abortions, and the eighth U.S. abortion provider murdered since 1977, according to the National Abortion Federation. Seventeen others had been targeted with attempted murder.

Tiller, who was cleared in March of 17 misdemeanor charges relating to his practice, had been the target of repeated protests and harassment for many years; he was wounded in both arms when an anti-abortion activist shot him in 1993.

The suspect in Sunday’s shooting was identified by a law enforcement agent as Scott Roeder. Roeder, 51, was taken into custody about three hours after and 170 miles away from the shooting at Reformation Lutheran Church.

Police said Sunday that all early indications showed the shooter acted alone. Operation Rescue, a group that closely tracked Tiller’s work and legal troubles, condemned the killing as vigilantism and “a cowardly act.”

Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, told The New York Times that Roeder was “not a friend, not a contributor, not a volunteer,” even though a 2007 post on the group’s Web site was written by a man identifying himself as Scott Roeder who asked if anyone had thought of attending Tiller’s church to ask the doctor and other worshippers about his work.

Love how even Fox News looks as abortion opponents as “those people”…

    • imnewatthis

I just happened to be walking around downtown this evening, and happened upon a large candlelight vigil for Geoge Tiller. Many people were carrying signs praising Dr. Tiller, and talking about “women’s health”. One sign said “Murder is not pro-life”. (Duh!) To be honest, I didn’t look at everyone and their signs too closely ; I was kind of trying to hurry by. I got the feeling these people felt the murder reflected on the pro-life movement in general, not just one or a few people. I noted to myself, I’ve NEVER seen a single protest against abortion around here (and I’ve lived here since 1984; all I’ve seen are anti-war protests and parades and protests against violence against women and protests against sanctions against Iraq prior to the war, oh yeah, and the annual Gay Pride parade), but now that an abortion doctor is murdered, all the protesters appeared like magic. This murder was a terrible thing, but there are only certain murders my town cares about.

Who’s worried about $668K per household when we all feel so GOOD about how things are going. From USATODAY:

Leap in U.S. debt hits taxpayers with 12% more red ink

Taxpayers are on the hook for an extra $55,000 a household to cover rising federal commitments made just in the past year for retirement benefits, the national debt and other government promises, a USA TODAY analysis shows.

The 12% rise in red ink in 2008 stems from an explosion of federal borrowing during the recession, plus an aging population driving up the costs of Medicare and Social Security.

That’s the biggest leap in the long-term burden on taxpayers since a Medicare prescription drug benefit was added in 2003.

The latest increase raises federal obligations to a record $546,668 per household in 2008, according to the USA TODAY analysis. That’s quadruple what the average U.S. household owes for all mortgages, car loans, credit cards and other debt combined…

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/w.....debt_N.htm

Apparently, the calculation doesn’t count the debt burden ladled on by the parsinimous Obamy, who is watching every line of the budget.

But when you feel this good about things, when you are filled with hope and change, the numbers don’t really matter, do they?

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa finds his dates the old-fashioned way: he dates reporters who cover him.

    From the LA Times:

L.A. mayor is dating local newscaster

A Los Angeles television reporter is dating Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, about two years after his extramarital affair with another local newscaster led to the breakup of his 20-year marriage.

KTLA-TV Channel 5 reporter Lu Parker, a former Miss U.S.A., has been dating Villaraigosa since March, station officials confirmed Monday. On Sunday, while working as a weekend anchor, Parker announced a story about the likelihood of Villaraigosa running for governor in 2010.

Now that we’re aware of the relationship, she will no longer be covering local politics,” said KTLA-TV news director Jason Ball, who defended the journalist’s ethics but declined to elaborate. “I have the utmost faith in Lu Parker’s abilities.”

The mayor’s spokesman, Matt Szabo, said he would not comment on Villaraigosa’s personal life.

Villaraigosa is separated from his wife, Corina. Their divorce is not yet final.

Indications of the relationship were made public early Monday on the NBC Channel 4 L.A. news website, which posted a story about Villaraigosa and Parker browsing in a Larchmont bookstore over the weekend.

The report included a snapshot of the two inside Chevalier’s bookstore with the mayor casually dressed, wearing shades and having a laugh.

“Witnesses say they did not hold hands or kiss, but appeared very chummy,” the NBC Channel 4 story said. “Parker was seen touching the mayor’s chest and stomach while they spoke. She was also seen looking at a book about Kenya and overheard saying to Villaraigosa, ‘We should buy it for our trip.’ “

Villaraigosa’s spokesman said the mayor has no official overseas trip planned.

Parker did not respond to requests for comment. …

Ah, to be a liberal Democrat.

In case you don’t remember the backstory:

Villaraigosa’s affair with Telemundo KVEA-TV Channel 52 reporter and anchor Mirthala Salinas in 2007 also raised a conflict-of-interest question and created a firestorm of publicity that tainted his first term in office.

During his successful campaign for reelection this year, Villaraigosa continually apologized for the affair.

Salinas, who as a political reporter had covered such mayoral initiatives as his effort to gain control of the Los Angeles Unified School District, later quit after she was suspended for two months and reassigned by Telemundo to the station’s Riverside bureau.

From an excited and quite irrational (Madison) Wisconsin State Journal:

‘We are still alive’: Janesville GM plant in running to build new, small car

    By Judy Newman

The General Motors plant in Janesville and the Chrysler engine plant in Kenosha have a new chance at life, Gov. Jim Doyle said Monday.

As GM, the once mighty U.S. automaker, filed for bankruptcy protection Monday, Chrysler won a judge’s approval to sell most of its assets to Italy’s Fiat, and could emerge from bankruptcy this week.

Both announcements brought encouraging news for Wisconsin’s crippled auto industry.

The idled GM-Janesville factory is one of three assembly plants a possible sites to build a new small car, GM spokesman Chris Lee said Monday.

The other two are in Spring Hill, Tenn., and Orion, Mich., both of which will end production this fall.

“We are still alive,” Gov. Jim Doyle said.

“It’s good news,” said Janesville city manager Eric Levitt. “The fact that we’re one of three, that’s all you can ask for.”

Doyle also said Chrysler’s bankruptcy does not include selling the Kenosha plant, leaving an opening for Fiat to consider the site.

GM officials told Doyle on Sunday the Janesville plant would not be among those to be closed and disposed of in the bankruptcy filing.

GM on Monday announced the permanent closure of nine other GM factories.

A stamping plant in Pontiac, Mich., will be on standby status.

“We still have hope and opportunity to compete for jobs and manufacturing cars in Janesville,” Doyle said at a news conference at Ballweg Chevrolet, Middleton. “I don’t want to get everybody’s hopes up too much. (But) this was where we were hoping we would be today.”

Doyle was flanked by Commerce Secretary Dick Leinenkugel, Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan, former Sen. Tim Cullen and two United Auto Workers union leaders. …

    http://www.madison.com/wsj/topstories/453262

The incredible thing is that GM actually made this statement about Janesville; they really are considering making the Obamamobile in the oldest factory they own.

If there is anything that proves both that GM still doesn’t get it as well as the fact that financial responsibility is of no concern when you’re owned by the Federal Government, this is it.

What to do when something outside the mainstream is successful?

Why do everything possible to legislate it out of existence and destroy what made it successful – especially if it threatens the Union-imposed status quo?

    From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Budget proposal includes new rules for voucher schools

    By Alan J. Borsuk

Intense, behind-the-scenes negotiations have yielded changes in the rules for Milwaukee’s controversial private school voucher program, imposing requirements substantially more like those of public schools but avoiding some of the provisions voucher supporters feared the most.

The 120-plus private schools, with about 20,000 students, will have to give standardized tests and report the results, employ teachers who have at least bachelor’s degrees and meet the same minimum hours of instruction as public schools, according to the agreement that is part of the state budget proposal endorsed Friday by the Legislature’s powerful Joint Finance Committee.

The per-student amount paid by the state to the private schools will be reduced 2.5%, in line with the reduction in general state aid for public schools.

But some of the provisions voucher leaders opposed strongly – such as requiring that governing meetings be open proceedings – have been dropped or modified.

As with many compromises, it appears that people both in the pro-voucher and anti-voucher camps will be displeased. But those involved in the agreement say it will allow higher quality schools in the program to continue operating and keep the basic structure of the program intact.

It is viewed by some voucher advocates as the best deal they were going to get in a Legislature controlled by Democrats, and by others as a blow that should have been fought in a more aggressive and public way. The upshot is a schism within the ranks of voucher leaders that has, among other things, separated the most prominent voice of the movement, Howard Fuller, from a longtime, influential ally, Susan Mitchell, president of the organization School Choice Wisconsin.

Fuller described the outcome as “a decent result.”

“Not every school is going to be happy with what is in the package,” he said. “I personally do not think there is anything in there that people cannot live with. That doesn’t mean they’re going to be jumping for joy.”

Gov. Jim Doyle included in his budget proposal to the Legislature in February substantial changes in voucher school operations. In March, Fuller switched some of his long-held positions and said it was time to negotiate with Doyle and put the schools in the program under more requirements aimed at assuring quality. …

    http://www.jsonline.com/news/e.....77717.html

“Assuring quality” being a euphemism for “giving into the NEA’s demands.”

Really, the new requirements here are rather minor, but how long before the NEA demands the voucher schools teach the same curricula as the public schools or that all voucher school teachers join the NEA?

Families plead for US reporters’ release in NKorea

SEOUL, South Korea – For weeks after North Korean guards seized Laura Ling and Euna Lee near the border with China and spirited the American journalists to Pyongyang on criminal charges, their families waited quietly for news about them.

Then out of the blue, a phone call last Tuesday — the first since the reporters vanished March 17 while on a trip near the Chinese-North Korean border.

“They were very scared; they’re very, very scared,” sister Lisa Ling, also a TV journalist who reported from North Korea in 2005, said…

*Ling and Lee — reporters for San Francisco-based Current TV, a media venture started by former Vice President Al Gore — stand trial Thursday in North Korea’s highest court, accused of entering the country illegally and engaging in “hostile acts.*

In Washington, State Department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters North Korea should not use the reporters as a pawn in nuclear talks.

Associated Press writer Kwang-tae Kim in Seoul, Carley Petesch in New York and Foster Klug in Washington DC contributed to this report.

Didn’t know where to put this but while warming up the boob-tube tonight I ran across NBC airing “Earth 2100″ where they paint the gloom and doom picture of a fetid, oil-drained world that cannot feed itself.

To me, this is not fact-based “science” as they cannot back up a single claim they make. They would have you believe, that unless we plant a bunch of windmills and grow solar cells by the millions, Earth will be unable to support life. (yes, I know those things aren’t organic..I was being facetious)

But what really disturbs me is that the MSM, already a sucker for a good scare story and local affiliates very good at, “Find out what food may be killing you, tonight at 10″ kind of scare tactics. And, I’m sure there are millions glued to their TV’s saying, “My god…we have to DO something…Billy, take all the newspaper to the recyclers, Amy….get on the computer and find out how much it’ll cost to convert the Suburban to ethanol, I’ll go buy some solar panels and cut off the AC. We have to SAVE THE PLANET EVERYONE!!!!! NOW MOVE, MOVE, MOVE!!!!”

It’s irresponsible and I’m sure algore is just lovin’ it.

What a bunch of crap. And clearly geared towards children. It is pretty obvious that the children were supposed to feel responsible for the starvation death of Papa Polar Bear. As if the alternative in an eco-perfect universe would have been for the bear to step on a twig from the morphine tree and he would just slowly go to sleep at a ripe old age.

US looks for Saudi help in Afghanistan, Pakistan
By SEBASTIAN ABBOT, Associated Press Writer

KABUL – The United States, grappling with how to counter the spread of Taliban militants on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, is turning to Saudi Arabia for help.

Saudi Arabia has historical ties with the Taliban. The kingdom and Pakistan worked together to facilitate the rise of the radical Islamic movement in the 1990s and they, along with the United Arab Emirates, were the only countries to recognize Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

The Obama administration has indicated a willingness to reconcile with more moderate members of the Taliban.

Steve Coll, an expert on Afghanistan and Pakistan who heads the New America Foundation, pointed out that the Saudis were unable to convince the Taliban to turn over Osama bin Laden in the late 1990s.

The Saudis could be better help in policing the large sums of money that flow into the countries, especially Pakistan, from wealthy donors and Islamic charities in the kingdom, said Daniel Markey, an Afghanistan and Pakistan expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.

The Saudis have insisted they are doing all they can to rein in terror financing. Many experts believe they could do more but say the Saudis are wary about angering religious conservatives in the country who are key government supporters.

What is Madison, WI going to do in a down economy?

Everything they can to depress it further.

Remember that this is undoubtedly an approach the EPA will impose all too soon nationally.

From the ultra-far left Madison, WI Capital Times:

Madison wants to cut auto traffic 25% by 2020

    By Mike Ivey

The city of Madison is poised to add another hoop for developers to jump through when considering new projects: how many car trips will be generated.

A resolution working its way through City Hall sets a goal of reducing the total amount of vehicles miles traveled here 25 percent by 2020. That could make it harder to build homes, offices or stores on the urban fringe where cars are the sole means of transportation.

But supporters say reducing automobile dependency will bring economic, social and environmental benefits to the city. They also contend it won’t tie the hands of the private sector or drive investment out of town.

“These are goals, just one more thing to consider when making decisions,” east side Ald. Satya Rhodes-Conway told the Madison Plan Commission at its meeting this week. “It doesn’t require the council or Plan Commission to do anything other than pay attention.”

Approved by the Plan Commission on a 7-1 vote, the resolution says automobiles are “a major contributor to environmental degradation, including air emissions that increase levels of ozone, particulates, greenhouse gases, stormwater runoff, heat island effects, habitat and agricultural land destruction.”

It further states that transportation inefficiency is a “major contributor to social inequity,” making it harder for the poor or disabled to get to work or meet other daily needs.

The resolution calls for coordinating transportation and land-use planning on a citywide scale, noting that mixed-use development within individual neighborhoods alone won’t make much difference. …

Time to try and smear Cheney further.

From the leftists at the Washington Post:

Cheney Led Briefings of Lawmakers To Defend Interrogation Techniques

By Paul Kane and Joby Warrick

Former vice president Richard B. Cheney personally oversaw at least four briefings with senior members of Congress about the controversial interrogation program, part of a secretive and forceful defense he mounted throughout 2005 in an effort to maintain support for the harsh techniques used on detainees.

The Cheney-led briefings came at some of the most critical moments for the program, as congressional oversight committees were threatening to investigate or even terminate the techniques, according to lawmakers, congressional officials, and current and former intelligence officials.

Cheney’s role in helping handle intelligence issues in the Bush administration — particularly his advocacy for the use of aggressive methods and warrantless wiretapping against alleged terrorists — has been well documented. But his hands-on role in defending the interrogation program to lawmakers has not been previously publicized.

The CIA made no mention of his role in documents delivered to Capitol Hill last month that listed every lawmaker who had been briefed on “enhanced interrogation techniques” since 2002. For meetings that were overseen by Cheney, the agency told the intelligence committees that information about who oversaw those briefings was “not available.”

The revelations do not shed light on whether top Democrats, as Republicans contend, were aware that waterboarding, a technique that simulates drowning, was being used on terrorism suspects as early as the fall of 2002. That discussion has dominated Capitol Hill since last month, when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who was not present at any of the briefings that included Cheney, accused the agency of intentionally misleading her in a 2002 briefing about the use of waterboarding. …

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....03999.html

See – Cheney is evil and must be prosecuted!

Gee, why would Cheney personally go to bat for programs he has said over and over has saved American lives by preventing attacks?

    • My daughter was at an upscale shopping and dining area here in the Bay Area, accompanied by a very handsome French-Canadian gentleman. They were walking from a restaurant when he was approached by a “Santa Cruz/Berkeley” type (aka “caught in the 1960s hippy”) and was asked if he would be wiling to sign a petition to “put Dick Cheney and others in prison for their crimes.” Petition fool did not acknowledge my daughter in any way. Probably smart for petition fool, because she’d have gone off on him too.

French-Canadian gentleman (who resides in the U.S. and works in both the U.S. and Canada) looked at the petition and pretty much went off on the guy, saying things such as “I know some of the people on that list, and they are far more caring and intelligent than you will ever be. Cheney and the others who made the decision to go to war care more about the United States than you do. The taxes I pay help in paying your welfare,” and finally “get away from me and go back to your Section 8 housing that I pay for” (language slightly sanitized for your protection).

My daughter probably would have mouthed off and asked why the petition fool wasn’t carrying around a petition to have the liar-in-chief removed from office! The theories on Air France 447 take an interesting turn.

    From Fox News:

Air France Bomb Threat Before Flight 447 Crash

Just days before the mysterious crash of Air France Flight 447 in the Atlantic Ocean, Brazilian authorities reportedly delayed a similar Air France flight from Buenos Aires to Paris after the airline received a bomb threat over the phone.

Police and officials at Buenos Aires’ Ezeiza Airport spent 90 minutes inspecting the threatened plane for explosives on the evening of May 27, but found nothing, according to a Brazilian news report.

During the search, passengers were not evacuated from the jet and later arrived safely at their destination in Paris.

A French accident investigator said Wednesday it’s unclear whether the chief pilot of Flight 447 was at the controls when the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.

The head of France’s accident investigation agency also said he is “not optimistic” that rescuers will recover the plane’s black boxes, which are probably miles underwater.

Pilots on long-haul flights often take turns at the controls to remain alert. Asked whether the chief pilot was in the cockpit when the plane went down, the chief investigator told a news conference in France that there was no confirmed information either way.

He noted, “We don’t even know the exact time of the accident.”

He also told reporters there were no indications of a problem with the plane before it left Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night en route to Paris. …

Bill, remember Lockerbee (sp?)? Originally that plane was supposed to be far out over the Atlantic when it blew up. The original flight from Frankfurt had been delayed about 90 minutes and then an additional delay at Heathrow that put the flight about 2 hours behind what it should have been. If it had just fallen out of the sky, no one would have known why and would have assumed that perhaps there was mechanical failure. I saw that story on Drudge late last night and thought it interesting.

Bilk, there were witness reports of sparked fires on the plane while in air, and experts were saying that no way lightening could have done this, because planes are made to keep lightening from damaging, and happens all the time.

We’re All MUSLIM now well, according to Barack ‘Teleprompter Precedent’ Obama.

Barack Hussein Obama: US “one of the largest Muslim countries in the World”
    Toby Harnden Telegrah.co.uk June 3, 2009

It is important to note that “if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world”.

So says President Barack Obama. Or I should say: Barack Hussein Obama.

    http://tinyurl.com/p78dh6

So Newsweek declares “We’re All Socialists Now.” and
Now US President Obama declares ‘The US is (basically) a Muslim Country’.

Jake Tapper writes on this issue at his blog (Political Punch) on ABC.com – The Emergence of President Obama’s Muslim Roots.

    I have two questions:
    1) I wonder what Latina Judge Sotomayor would say about this new declaration? I thought she was Latina.
    and
    2) I wonder how Teleprompter Precedent figures that 1% of the US population (2 million) makes the US one of the largest Muslim countries?(according to Wikipedia (I know, I know)) that would place the US between #39 Kosovo and #40 The Gambia – out of only 46 Muslim countries listed.

And yet, and yet – those who proclaimed Obama’s muslim roots, heritage and familial connections during the campaign were called – crazy, conspiracy nuts and worse.

It’s too bad that it’s not December or Teleprompter Precedent would probably go on Hajj.

Obama and his mother were both registered Muslim in Indonesia when they lived and visited there all these years. Obama’s entire Kenya family muslim. Obama is Arabic name. No one put Atheist on their required registration, or they’d be killed. And Obama did not convert to Christianity at Trinity. He chose it for it’s white and jew hatred. His closest friend was muslim.
His idol Malcome X became muslim and joined Nation of Islam in prison, and so did many of Obama’s staff as Senator. Obama never made any claim to be a Christian until before election.

In 2006 Obama was only one from senate committe in Bagdad, who played hookie and flew to Palenstine to listen to their woes.

His corrupt business partner and neighbor was Arabic Rezko.
Only when it came down to evidence Trinity was active Jewish haters, did Obama finally distance himself.
      .
Malcome X also went to Cairo and Saudi-Arabia to visit Mecca, where the Hiro mountain caves where the Muhammad’s wrote the Qu’ran from dreams.
Now Obama is back again, and bow paid off, because picture in news today showed Arab shiek putting on gold necklace around Obama’s neck, that would cost a fortune. Does he get to take it home with him? Expensive Gift or pay off?

What does Obama have to lose in America? He has the al-Quaida extremist countries like Saudi Arabia and live in palaces and castles, if America is ruined, which has been the target of his hatred since he was sent there from Indonesia. He writes in his book, that even our aid to Indonesia after the Tusami hurricane, won’t soften their opinion of America. And there is no history
for such hatred towards America, except for it is a Christian Country.. He wrote his mother kept him up on the events. It was muslims killing muslims over there for centuries and that’s what’s happening this very day there.

The Quran has a part in it that says if their life is in danger, they don’t have to
do the muslim customs. Take it further. Those mulsim boys in Indonesia scalping a whitie, were dressed just like American boys. Those protestors after Isreal struck back, the protestors in UK. The pilot’s on those planes. To include even the recent NYC al-Qaeda planing to blow up military planes and Jewish Temples.
The media is who will have blood on their hands. The politicans who don’t want America scared. Remember that politican in San Fransico that warned the people. He was suppose to keep quiet, but worried if our feds failed in stopping the plan, and warned the people. Oh, traffic jams for not taking the
San Fransico bridge that was the target. San Diego is full of terrorists.
al-Quaida attempt, and government was furious at him. They don’t warn Americans. The UK agent that just got fired, because he accidently tipped off Al-Qaeda by a photo with names of busting them. They were only able to bust about 15 of them.

Administration to Reveal Plans for Katrina Housing Transition

    By Spencer S. Hsu
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Wednesday, June 3, 2009

The Obama administration will announce plans today to virtually give away roughly 1,800 mobile homes to 3,400 families displaced by Hurricane Katrina who are living in government-provided housing along the Gulf Coast, officials said.

The administration also will make available $50 million in rental vouchers to income-eligible trailer occupants who move to targeted housing projects, and take over from Louisiana the job of helping residents find permanent homes, said a senior White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity before the formal announcement.

“We knew we needed to bring this program to a close,” the official said. “We also want to ensure a humane and secure transition for all of them.”

The sale option comes weeks after the trailer program formally ended May 1, and after Federal Emergency Management Agency officials said they could begin officially referring cases for eviction June 1.

FEMA typically provides disaster aid for 18 months. It extended assistance for 45 months since Katrina hit in August 2005.

About 1,150 families in FEMA housing live in units the agency classifies as mobile homes and park models, which will be offered for sale at $5 and $1, respectively. FEMA expects to free up an additional 600 to 700 units from its inventory to donate through state and local governments and nonprofit groups, the administration official said. Individuals who previously bought units will be offered refunds.

It is unclear what impact the changes will have. Many local jurisdictions refuse to alter zoning ordinances to allow small manufactured homes.

Thousands of existing vouchers from the Department of Housing and Urban Development that are becoming available in Louisiana are going unused. Some trailer occupants await promised grants to rebuild their homes or do not want to leave their home sites. Others do not want to move to HUD-subsidized housing or to pay more rent. Some occupants are so sick, elderly or dysfunctional that they require more help to find housing, officials said.

Spokesman Clark Stevens said FEMA is committed to working with families case by case, adding that 139,000 other households have cycled out of the trailer program. “No one will face evictions from a temporary unit while these new measures are implemented,” he said in a written statement.

Obama Changes Laws, and to Add New Laws for Immigrants Terrorists & Gitmo Prisoners in the U.S.

Associated Press: Obama reverses Bush immigration lawyer rule
By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer June 3 2009

WASHINGTON – A rule limiting access to lawyers for immigrants facing deportation has been tossed out by the Obama administration.

On Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder did just that, saying he is vacating the order issued by predecessor Michael Mukasey which said that immigrants facing deportation do not have an automatic right to an effective lawyer.

Holder said he is also instructing the Justice Department to begin working on a new rule.

…Holder’s decision “recognizes we can’t treat immigrants any differently than ourselves if we expect to receive the same benefits the Constitution provides.”

Mukasey had issued a 33-page decision in January saying the Constitution does not entitle someone facing deportation to have a case reopened based upon shoddy work by a lawyer.

“The integrity of immigration proceedings depends in part on the ability to assert claims of ineffective assistance of counsel,” the attorney general said.

“I am somewhat concerned that Holder’s proposal will give non-citizens one too many bites of the apple,” said Feere. “Aliens are not granted the same constitutional protections that citizenship guarantees.”

The country’s immigration courts do not track how many immigrants seek to reopen cases because of claims of ineffective counsel.

EXCLUSIVE: Al Qaeda eyes bio attack from Mexico

    Seeks white militias as allies

    By Sara A. Carter

U.S. counterterrorism officials have authenticated a video by an al Qaeda recruiter threatening to smuggle a biological weapon into the United States via tunnels under the Mexico border, the latest sign of the terrorist group’s determination to stage another mass-casualty attack on the U.S. homeland.

The video aired earlier this year as a recruitment tool makes clear that al Qaeda is looking to exploit weaknesses in U.S. border security and also is willing to ally itself with white militia groups or other anti-government entities interested in carrying out an attack inside the United States, according to counterterrorism officials interviewed by The Washington Times.

The officials, who spoke only on the condition they not be named because of the sensitive nature of their work, stressed that there is no credible information that al Qaeda has acquired the capabilities to carry out a mass biological attack although its members have clearly sought the expertise.

The video first aired by the Arabic news network Al Jazeera in February and later posted to several Web sites shows Kuwaiti dissident Abdullah al-Nafisi telling a room full of supporters in Bahrain that al Qaeda is casing the U.S. border with Mexico to assess how to send terrorists and weapons into the U.S.

Four pounds of anthrax — in a suitcase this big — carried by a fighter through tunnels from Mexico into the U.S. are guaranteed to kill 330,000 Americans within a single hour if it is properly spread in population centers there,” the recruiter said. “What a horrifying idea; 9/11 will be small change in comparison. Am I right? There is no need for airplanes, conspiracies, timings and so on. One person, with the courage to carry 4 pounds of anthrax, will go to the White House lawn, and will spread this ‘confetti’ all over them, and then we’ll do these cries of joy. It will turn into a real celebration.” …

Obama’s calls him your Majesty. Quick before the gold necklace get’s locked.

Obama visits Saudi king before high-stakes speech
By JENNIFER LOVEN, AP White House Correspondent 34 mins ago

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Opening a mission to write a new chapter on Islam and the West, President Barack Obama consulted Wednesday with the Saudi king “in the place where Islam began,”

The son of a Kenyan Muslim who lived part of his childhood in Muslim-majority Indonesia, Obama planned what aides called a “truth-telling” address on Thursday, aimed directly at the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims.

“I thought it was very important to come to the place where Islam began and to seek his majesty’s counsel,” Obama said.

Birthplace of Islam, Saudi Arabia is still considered guardian of the faith as home to the holy cities of Medina and Mecca. The Sunni Arab powerhouse also sits on the world’s largest oil reserves, buys billions in U.S. military equipment ..

Abdullah showered Obama with compliments in the welcoming ceremonies and presented him with the King Abdul Aziz Order of Merit, a large medallion with a thick gold chain that is the kingdom’s highest honor. “Those are only given to the very few friends of the king, and you are certainly one of those,” Abdullah said.

“Goodness gracious,” Obama said as an aide approached with the striking necklace. “That’s something there.” He said: “I consider the king’s friendship a great blessing, and I am very appreciative that he would bestow this honor on me during this visit.”

The message from bin Laden, the terrorist mastermind-in-hiding who was born in Saudi Arabia and directed the 2001 attacks that involved 15 hijackers from the desert monarchy, was broadcast by Al-Jazeera Television.

A special State Department Web site lets people everywhere register to receive and reply to speech highlights; Obama’s remarks were to be played live on the White House Web site and translated into 13 languages; and excerpts were being distributed not only on the White House’s dedicated YouTube page but also on special-event links on social networking sites such as MySpace, Twitter and Facebook, complete with live chatting opportunities.

“There’s been a breach, an undeniable breach, between America and the Islamic world,” senior adviser David Axelrod said…”That breach has been years in the making.”

That includes calling for a full halt to all growth in Jewish settlements in the Palestinian West Bank,.. Obama also was to call on his hosts, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, as well as other Arab nations, to put actual money behind their rhetorical support for the struggling Palestinian government of Mahmoud Abbas.

And he wasn’t going to shy away from a hot topic — the fact that he was to speak from Egypt, which has been under the iron rule of President Hosni Mubarak for nearly 30 years.

Obama planned to salute Egypt’s historically positive role in Mideast peacemaking, while also talking about the need for a better democratic and human rights model. In one gesture, organizers made sure that members of Egypt’s main opposition movement, the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, would be in the audience at Cairo University.

Honda introduces bill that would make sweeping changes in legal immigration

To ensure that issues involving legal immigration don’t get lost in the fiery debate about illegal immigration, Silicon Valley Congressman Mike Honda today will introduce a bill that would give green-card holders the same rights as citizens to bring their spouses and children to the U.S.

The wide-ranging legislation, which already has about 50 House co-sponsors and the support of powerful groups such as the NAACP and the Anti-Defamation League, is expected to help build momentum for “comprehensive immigration reform” this year…

Honda’s bill also includes a controversial provision to allow gays and lesbians to sponsor the immigration of same-sex “permanent partners”…

The law would also increase numerical caps on the number of visas for countries such as Mexico, the Philippines, China and India. People from those countries hoping to immigrate to the U.S. routinely face waits of more than a decade in a system with a backlog of 5.8 million people.

But opposing groupsargue that the number of immigrants permitted to come to the U.S. each year — roughly a million — is already too high…

Enough people to fill “a new San Jose are moving to the United States every single year,” said Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, or FAIR.

“These kind of numbers have an impact on schools, health care and every institution in the country — an impact lost on people in Congress like Rep. Honda,” Mehlman said. “All of these proposals seem to disregard the fact that we now have 9 percent unemployment in this country”…

“Don’t be biased towards Israel, don’t interfere in countries’ internal affairs and don’t give lessons in democracy,” said an editorial in Egypt’s state-owned Rose El-Youssef newspaper.

The chief editor of Egypt’s state-owned Al-Ahram, Ossama Saraya, said…
“There’s nothing more absurd than putting more pressure on the Arab-Muslim world,”…

Washington’s key Arab allies Egypt and Saudi Arabia have repeatedly come under criticism from international rights organisations for their poor human rights records.

Hamas, the Islamist rulers of the Gaza Strip boycotted by the West as a terrorist group, urged Obama to put “real pressure” on Israel.

In non-Arab Iran, the head of North American Studies at Tehran University said Obama should have gone to the largest Muslim nation in the world — Indonesia — to address Muslims.

“I personally think Obama has made a mistake by choosing Saudi Arabia and Egypt. I don’t think this is going to go down well in the Muslim and Arab world,” Sayed Mohammad Marandi told AFP.

“Symbolically speaking, he could have gone somewhere like Indonesia,” he said.

Saudi Arabia’s Al-Riyadh newspaper warned Muslims against having high expectations. “The Islamic world should not think that Obama is coming to be an ally or a supporter,” an editorial said.

“They want him to say that he’s going to come down hard on the Israelis, that he’s going to confront the settlement policy and that he’s going to push the Israelis to withdraw from the West Bank. “Of course that is what every Arab would like to hear.”

    MEDIA MATTERS (Acorn update)
Guess who’s riding to rescue of those failing newspapers
‘King and queen of toxic mortgages’ underwrite ‘independent’ investigative reporting – with a tilt – Herb and Marion Sandler
    © 2009 WorldNetDaily May 03, 2009

WASHINGTON – With newspapers dropping dead like the flies they once swatted, a new non-profit riding to the rescue with free, ready-made “independent investigative reporting” is accepting money from a billionaire couple with a far-left agenda and dubbed “the king and queen of toxic mortgages.”

Herb and Marion Sandler, who sold their Golden West Financial Corp. to Wachovia and nearly bankrupted the buyer with its portfolio of subprime loans, committed $10 million to Pro Publica Inc., the non-profit that promises underwritten hard-hitting investigative journalism that has a “moral force” to newspapers facing cutbacks in staff and elimination of editions.

But, according to a report by Capital Research Center, the Sandlers have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to MoveOn.org, George Soros’ Democracy Alliance, David Brock’s Media Matters, John Podesta’s Center for American Progress, the William J. Clinton Foundation, the Tides Foundation, the Institute for Public Policy, the Natural Resources Defense Council and two affiliates of the voter-fraud tainted ACORN, the Association for Community Organizations for Reform Now – and many other groups and causes with a portside tilt.

Time magazine named the Sandlers in its list of “25 People to Blame for the Financial Crisis.” The Sandlers company “offered several ways to back-load your loan and thereby reduce your early payments, with increasing zeal and misleading advertisements,” Time reported. Then the Sandlers dealt the company to Wachovia before the subprime loan crisis hit.

Rather than investigating ACORN last fall, when accusation of voter fraud were being widely revealed, Pro Publica began probing the background of the public affairs group that blew the whistle on ACORN.

Capital Research Center sees Pro Publica as another front in the battle by “progressive” organizations in promoting a left-wing policy agenda through the media – noting on-going efforts to silence talk radio, intimidate dissent through groups like Media Matters and even bail out newspapers

    CAIRO, Egypt —
On the eve of his address, Obama was still tinkering with the final text he’ll deliver at Cairo University, according to Ben Rhodes, one of his speechwriters.

Obama’s brief Egyptian visit was to include a meeting with President Hosni Mubarak, a tour of a famous mosque and a visit to the Pyramids.

Touching down in Riyadh, Obama was received with a ceremonial 21-gun salute, and he greeted King Abdullah with an embrace and cheek-to-cheek..

Obama responded, “Shukran,” which means “thank you” in Arabic.

In Cairo, several of Mubarak’s political critics said they’d been invited to see Obama speak, They include 10 lawmakers associated with the Islamist opposition group Muslim Brotherhood, dissidents who’ve challenged Mubarak’s 27-year rule and prominent bloggers who’ve exposed state torture.

However, Gamal Eid, the head of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information, said he planned to decline the invitation. The Israeli ambassador to Egypt also is invited, and Eid said he didn’t want to be in the same room as a representative of what he called a “criminal” government.

    (Landay reported from Washington.)

Well, I’m sure Obma will not ask about Egypt’s history of slavery, nor visit the Red Sea where Egyptians drowned chasing slaves trying to escape to the promised land. Reminents were recently discovered. But, oh no. Obama will visit another mosque and discuss the slaughter of the slaves that escaped.

    From the USAtoday:

Benefit spending soars to new high

    By Dennis Cauchon, USA TODAY

The recession is driving the safety net of government benefits to a historic high, as one of every six dollars of Americans’ income is now coming in the form of a federal or state check or voucher.

Benefits, such as Social Security, food stamps, unemployment insurance and health care, accounted for 16.2% of personal income in the first quarter of 2009, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports. That’s the highest percentage since the government began compiling records in 1929.

In all, government spending on benefits will top $2 trillion in 2009 — an average of $17,000 provided to each U.S. household, federal data show. Benefits rose at a 19% annual rate in the first quarter compared to the last three months of 2008.

…Adam Lerrick, economist at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, says the benefits’ explosion will eventually lead to an economic crisis.

“We’ve seen this movie before in many countries. It always has the same ending,” he says.

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/w.....titialskip

All in all a fair article, except for this line:

$17,000 provided to each U.S. household

Makes it sound like we are all receiving these benefits, when in fact most of us aren’t. For those still in the working world, it is more like these benefits cost each household $10,000 for every $60,000 in income to cover these liabilities. And it is probably even higher than that once you subtract the % of income that comes from the government that is included in the 1:6 ratio. Of course most of the money is borrowed, which is even worse. But this is the change people voted for, to be dependent upon the government.

Three U.S. lawmakers appealed to the Saudi government Wednesday to stop using religious textbooks that they say promote hatred and religious intolerance.

Reps. Anthony Weiner and Joseph Crowley of New York and Shelley Berkley of Nevada held a news conference to call on the Saudi government to stop planting what they said were seeds of hate in Saudi children through religious textbooks that teach controversial lessons, such as the hour of judgment will not come until Muslims fight the Jews and kill them.

“This is not some rogue document,” Weiner said. “This is the position of the Saudi government. … If we’re going to solve the generational conflicts, it’s important not to hate one another.”

Congress has tackled controversial textbooks before. Last year, a congressional report denounced portions of religious textbooks used at an Islamic school in Northern Virginia.

The school, in response to the report, deleted from its texts some of the most contentious passages, including references to Jihad, killing infidels and hatred of Jews and Christians. But critics say the revised books still are “toxic” and contain more subtle references, such as criticism of secular forms of government.

Rep. Weiner urged the Saudi government to act immediately.

“What they say is that they’ll fix it next year, next year, next year,” he said. “But the time is up.”

FOX News’ Chad Pergram contributed to this report.

These teachings are from the Quran. Kill homosexuals- Kill Jews look for them behind trees and rocks – a woman’s blood is worth half a man’s blood.

For Obama in his recent speech in the middle-east to say the Muslim practices the same as Christianity, in do to others as you would yourself, is ludicrous.

Qur’an 3:55 “Allah said, ‘Jesus, I will take you and raise you to Myself and rid you of the infidels (who have forged the lie that you are My son)…. Those who are infidels will surely receive severe torment both in this world and the next; and none will they have as a savior for them.”

Qur’an 21:98 “Verily you (unbelievers), and that which you worship besides Allah, are faggots for the Hell Fire! And come to it you will! There, sobbing and groaning will be your lot.”

This link, has many more muslim scriptures.
Some are punishment for an allowing an unbeliever to enter a mosque, which Obama keeps visiting mosques is an outrage to the terrorists.

This is why so many suicide bombings on mosques and religious gatherings.
It is decietful for Obama to keep telling Isreal to stop “colonizing” when they are only building on their own capital. That’s like Mexico bombing us and telling us we can’t build on our own border.

Plus Quran Scriptures to punish and kill muslims who refuse to fight and kill

Obama’s speech quoting the Quran, muslims must “speak the truth”
is telling the muslims enforce Quran, the only truth. Obama has to know this.

S&L gets outsized influence with one blog rating method:

Who’s Who in the Political Blogosphere?

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: It’s crowded out there in the political blogosphere — and there are as many ways to judge influence as there bloggers who stand ready to judge politicians.

But here’s an interesting tool I recently came across: From Wikio.com, it’s a ranking of political blogs — emanating from everywhere from living rooms, mainstream media organizations, and the White House.

The rankings are compiled based on links from other blogs — with extra weight given to blogs that rank higher via Wikio’s formulas, and based on how recently an item is published. Blog rolls aren’t taken into account, so only fresh postings impact the rankings…

    57 Outside the Beltway

    58 Sweetness & Light

    59 The Nation Blogs

    http://blogs.abcnews.com/theno.....phere.html

But the method just counts links from other blogs, not influence.

    Next time, TOP TEN.

    • Steve

      “58 Sweetness & Light”

That’s great to hear. And very flattering.

But at the risk of sounding immodest, our clout is far greater than that.

As careful readers have long since gathered by now.

    • canary

Pro, Can you put that in easier to understand terms, because I’m one those computer illiterates that always has to figure out what micro-soft, blog and tweeter means. I do know that Obama wants to come down on google and micro-soft.

    • Steve

BTW, a couple of months ago I happened to notice that Alexa had S&L ranked as the 16th highest “News And Media” site:

Alexa – Top Sites: News and Media
      http://www.alexa.com/browse?Ca.....8;Start=11

I’ve seen them rank S&L as high as third.

For their “Weblogs” list, they had S&L at #5:

      Alexa – Top Sites: Weblogs
      http://www.alexa.com/browse?&#.....148Start=1

And I have seen us listed by Alexa as #1.

But all of this is very fluid, varying wildly from week to week. And it’s weighed by ‘reach’ as well as just hits.

And as you can see from the links, Alexa has recently changed their site. I can’t find anything there now.

    • proreason

canary, I think they are counting other sites that link to S&L, but it also sounds like they apply a secret formula which includes the currency of the links. Who knows, it could be some more libwit propaganda.

And I agree with Steve that S&L’s influence is greater that this numeric ranking. Rush mentions Steve or the site a couple times a week, and Levin references the site as well.

Even so, it’s always good to get on list.

Note that Hot Air isn’t on the list…..and it’s gets thousands of comments a day.

VDH’s influential site isn’t listed either, and several others.

    • Steve

While we have veered into the topic, I should probably note that people who are so inclined can now follow S&L via Twitter.

You can use the link in the right hand sidebar (in the S&L Stuff section), or just go here:

    From Fox News:

Records, Writings Reveal Sotomayor’s Background, Shape Confirmation Debate

WASHINGTON — Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor has sent a Senate panel a massive portfolio of personal details and writings that lawmakers will pore over with a fine-tooth comb to shape the debate on her confirmation.

The five boxes of files delivered to Capitol Hill gave senators a fuller picture of Sotomayor’s background and record, as well as of how President Obama came to nominate his first Supreme Court choice. They came in response to a questionnaire the Senate Judiciary Committee sends federal court nominees.

The documents described Sotomayor’s finances, which paint a portrait of a New Yorker in an expensive neighborhood who may be living largely paycheck to paycheck. She has $1.16 million in assets, but $418,350 in debts, including her mortgage, credit card bills and a big dentist bill. Previous financial disclosure reports showed her with an annual income of about $200,000.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/04/

Now we know why Sotomayor is not a toothless nominee.

OBAMA changed context of Quran quote.
I had trouble finding Obama’s quote of the Quran other that he said it at speech. So, I put Quran scripture then quote. He left 2nd part off. “The Holy Quran teaches that whoever kills an innocent, it is as if he has killed all mankind; and whoever saves a person, it is as if he has saved all mankind.” I will not post because I think it was a pro-Palestine site. Don’t want cooties. ;)

In his speech, President Barak Husein Obama used verse 005-032 of sag
arabs’ Quran, but didn’t he intentionally avoide reading verse 005-033
which is a terrorist verse in what he called “Holy/taghieh” Kuran?

    005.032
For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that
whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption
in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and who so saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. Our messengers came unto them of old with clear proofs (of Allah’s Sovereignty), but afterwards lo! many of them became prodigals in the earth.
    005.033
The punishment of those who wage war against/dispute Allah and
His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the
land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet
from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in
    this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter;

PICKTHAL: The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His
messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will
be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides
cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their
degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful
    doom;
SHAKIR: The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His
messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they
should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be
cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as
a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a
    grievous chastisement,

You find some amazing stuff canary. What an active mind!

    • canary

Pro, I just don’t trust anything Obama says. Another version of the scripture he said and misquoted says

“whoever kills and innocent, other than for “mischief”, it is as if….”

Mischief is pretty tame excuse for killing a man for “an action that annoys, irratates, causes minor injury, irresponsible playfullness”,
But, then muslims do kill each other for small things. A woman accused of batting her eyes at a man, can be put to death, if they feel, instead of 100 whips. I figured I’d probably last a day before they “offed” me.
