Li beats Schiavone to win French Open title

    11:03am EDT

PARIS (Reuters) – China’s Li Na beat Italian fifth seed Francesca Schiavone 6-4 7-6 to win the French Open on Saturday and become the first player from an Asian nation to claim a grand slam singles title.

Sixth seed Li, who lost in the Australian Open final earlier this year, beat last year’s champion Schiavone with a confident display of power and accuracy.

I like your parallels though: indeed watching the global resurgence of Communism and Socialism has been a lot like watching a girl on steroids come out of nowhere to win the French Open.

      Whew, beastly scary. We’re doomed!

Arianna Huffington’s tip for success: ‘Women should sleep their way to the top’

    Jeff Poor @ The DC

“I actually have a more controversial view, which is women should sleep their way to the top,” Huffington said. “Let me explain – let me explain what I mean by that. What I mean by that — I mean literally sleep. I think women need to redefine success. We need to stop feeling that success is driving ourselves into the ground, working around the clock, never having time for yourself, never having any balance in your life and having a heart attack in your 50s.”

“I think it’s going to be a major, major role that women have to play,” she said. “And literally sleeping, recharging – we talk about it all the time, taking time for ourselves, making sure we do what we need to do for our families. I think we’re going to be more effective, more creative, more productive. It’s the exact opposite of the main way we’ve done things and look it’s gotten us.”

I assume Zsa Zsa thinks she’s being clever or creative.

But when it comes to goofball Libs always telling others how to live their lives, I can’t help but.. yawwwwn.

Bumbling Idiot Palin Plays Gotcha on Media’s Gotcha

    via Dan Riehl:

The media and the Left are celebrating as they believe they’e shown-up Sarah Palin. Oops! Turns out she’s correct. They appear to be taking their history from Longfellow’s “Paul Revere’s Ride”, which wasn’t written until 1860, almost 100 years after the event.

Here’s a more elaborate telling by a historian, which spells it out rather clearly.

The British officers began to interrogate Revere, whereupon Revere astonished his captors by telling them more than they even knew about their own mission. (HA!) He also told them that he had been warning the countryside of the British plan and that their lives were at risk if they remained in the vicinity of Lexington because there would soon be 500 men there ready to fight. Revere, of course, was bluffing.

The Regulars had Revere remount his horse and they headed toward Lexington Green, when suddenly, they heard a gunshot! Revere told the British officer that the shot was a signal “to alarm the country!” Now the British troops were getting very nervous ….

A few minutes later, they were all startled to hear the heavy crash of an entire volley of musketry from the direction of Lexington’s meeting house and then the Lexington town bell began clanging rapidly! Jonathan Loring, a Lexington resident captured earlier, turned to his captors and shouted “The bell’s a’ ringing! The town’s alarmed, and you’re all dead men!”

The British officers then talked urgently among themselves and decided to release their captives so as they would not slow their retreat.

    Curses, foiled again!

E coli being studied for the “new green” fuel a sure way for scientists to get more grant money.

E coli: Are the bacteria friend or foe?

By Smitha Mundasad Jun 3 2011

Though the strain O104 is causing severe illness and deaths in the current outbreak, there are hundreds of types of E. coli which cause us no problems.

    E. coli is used as a micro-factory: given the right instructions, it can be modified to rapidly produce hundreds of genes or specific proteins. It is the ideal workhorse: it is easy to grow, does not require much energy, or demand sophisticated living conditions.

    E. coli has been used in the production of antibiotics, vaccines and many other therapies.

Christopher Voigt, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has worked with E. coli to target cancer cells.

This work is now being continued by researchers in Berkeley who are testing the procedure in mouse models.

    ‘Green fuel’

Professor James Liao of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and his team recently developed a way to produce normal butanol using the bacteria.

Some consider butanol to be a greener alternative to gasoline [petrol] and other widely used fuels.

“We were able to demonstrate that E. coli can produce butanol very efficiently,” he said.

Their next step will be to increase the size of the process to see how the organisms behave in large tanks, to further test its commercial viability.

A number of scientists are trying to take advantage of the digital nature of DNA in E. coli, says Dr Karmella Haynes, of Harvard Medical School.

Her team’s research, published in 2008, used E. coli to help them solve a problem similar to classical mathematical puzzles.

Based on their design, as each E. coli bacterium worked as a micro-computer, certain bacteria were able to solve the problem at speed, Dr Haynes said.

    E. coli’s applications stretch even further – by inserting genes that produce light, it has been used to make primitive cameras.

It is this versatile nature – its ability to survive in many environments, to pick up bits of genetic code from other sources and to replicate rapidly – that also lends it a more sinister side.

But as new forms of infectious E. coli emerge and claim lives, there are a number of crucial experiments that still need to be done.

London Muslims who nearly killed teacher were terrorist suspects

The Telegraph: Men who beat up RE teacher were terrorist suspects

    By Duncan Gardham, Security Correspondent
    26 May 2011

The Security Service had placed a listening device in a car driven by one of the men as part of an investigation into a suspected terrorist network in East London, sources told the Daily Telegraph.

Akmol Hussein was heard setting out the plan to attack Mr Smith, head of religious education at Central Foundation Girls’ School in Bow, east London, saying in a Bangladeshi dialect: ‘This is the dog we want to hit, to strike, to kill.’

Jailing the gang at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Judge Hand said they had “literally smashed Mr Smith’s face in.”

… He told them: “You believed there was a higher authority to which you were responsible and that authority dictated you must attack Mr Smith…”

Judge Hand handed Akmol Hussein, a self-employed builder, and Azad Hussain, a finance worker, indeterminate sentences for public protection and ordered they serve at least five years before they can be released.

Simon Alam, an engineering student, was ordered to serve at least five years in a Young Offenders’ Institute and Sheikh Rashid, a bus driver, was jailed for at least four years.

A fifth man, Bangladesh-born Badruzzuha Uddin, 24, who helped the men by hiding blood-stained clothing, was jailed for two years.

Uddin and Alam, born in Germany, may now face deportation.

In the course of the attack Mr Smith was attacked with a knife, a metal rod and a brick and was hit in the stomach, and kicked in the head and face as he lay on the ground.

After the attack, the four men, pumped up on adrenaline, returned to Akmol Hussein’s Ford Focus where they were heard boasting about the attack, praising Allah and listening to Jihadi music.

Akmol Hussain said: ‘Praise to Allah. At that time nobody was there…Bruv, I don’t care about prison as long as I’m doing it for the deen [religion] of Allah…”

Alabama Governor Weighs Approval of Arizona-Style Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants

    Published June 04, 2011

The governor of Alabama is taking the weekend to decide whether he will sign an Arizona-style bill into law to crack down on illegal immigrants.

If Gov. Robert Bentley gives his stamp of approval to the controversial legislation, the American Civil Liberties Union has vowed to challenge it in court.

“It’s an outrageous throwback to the pre-civil rights era and we call on Governor Bentley to veto this deeply misguided bill,” Cecillia Wang, director of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, said Friday. “The Alabama Legislature has invited rank discrimination into people’s everyday lives,”

BBC: Golan: Israel troops fire on pro-Palestinian protesters

    Kevin Connolly
    5 June 2011

The protesters defied razor-wire fences and ditches along the Syrian border in Golan to mark the 44th anniversary of the 1967 Middle-East war.

Israel had vowed to prevent a repeat of a similar march last month, in which hundreds of people breached the fence.

The US state department said it was “troubled” by the “loss of life”.

“We call for all sides to exercise restraint,” it said. “Provocative actions like this should be avoided.”

After live gunfire failed to disperse the crowds, Israeli troops fired volleys of tear gas over the border. Many people fled while others lay on the ground.

Ahead of Sunday’s march, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would not allow “extremists” to breach Israel’s borders.

Another Israeli military spokeswoman, Avital Leibovich, told reporters: “This is an attempt by the Syrian regime to divert the world’s attention from the Syrian bloodshed that has been taking place in recent weeks.”

The anniversary is known in Arabic as the Naksa, or “setback”.

On 15 May, tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched on the borders with Israel, in the Palestinian territories, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon.

They were marking the 63rd anniversary of Nakba, which in Arabic means “catastrophe”

At least 12 people died during the 15 May demonstrations, which at one point saw hundreds manage to cross into the Golan Heights.

This is the worst reporting. Even the correspondent on the scene (video said they were “not penned down”, but the

Hundreds of protesters set to fly and land in Israel.

Jerusalem: 500 Palestinians set for mass ‘fly-in’ to B-G Airport

    By Oren Kessler 06/03/2011

Pro-Palestinian activists planning to send hundreds living abroad on commercial flights July 8.
According to a report released this week by the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, an Israeli NGO, organizers believe the planned Gaza flotilla is too limited in scope, and broader action is needed to “remove the blockade from the entire land of Palestine.”

Organizers said the “fly-in” would occur July 8, the date in 2004 that the UN’s International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion that Israel’s West Bank security fence is illegal by international law.

Organizers said 500 people have already scheduled flights to Israel, including Palestinian families from Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. Germany will be one of the participants’ main departure points.

Fifteen organizations are involved in the initiative, including the influential International Solidarity Movement…

Meanwhile, a Hamas-linked website called on Palestinian refugees and their descendants to travel to Israel on commercial flights on Saturday and Sunday…

The fly-in is touted as part of wider rallies and marches this weekend and early next week.

The JP: Unarmed demonstrators – the new threat?

    By Jacques Neriah 06/04/2011

Israel is finding itself facing new, dire challenges – challenges for which it has failed to prepare and for which it has yet to think of a response.

For years, the traditional Israeli reaction to provocation has been a show of force – firing tear gas, water cannons and, if needed, sending in the police cavalry.

blistering report when talk with terrorists does no good

Syrian protesters set off 4 land mines on border

    By Yaakov Lappin 06/05/2011

Four land mines exploded along northern border near Kunetra in the Golan Heights on Sunday after Syrian rioters threw Molotov cocktails at IDF forces.

The cocktails exploded in a field, starting a fire which then set off the four mines on the Syrian side of the border.

The IDF was unaware of the number of casualties caused by the explosions.

Israel arrests 12 Jihad terrorists, while 3 Palestinians blow themselves up at training facility

YNET News: Gaza: 3 PRC operatives killed in blast

Four more people wounded in explosion in Rafah training facility belonging to Popular Resistance Committees.

Three Palestinians were killed Tuesday in an explosion at a training facility of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) in the southern Gaza strip, eye witnesses and medical elements reported. Four more people were hurt in what appeared to be a work accident.

The three casualties were operatives in the PRC’s military wing. The group is one of the three organizations that took part in the abduction of Gilad Shalit.

According to the Palestinian news agency Ma’an, PRC spokesman Abu Mujahid confirmed that three of the group’s operatives had died and that four others were injured following the blast in the Abu Atiya refugee camp. The wounded and the victims’ bodies were taken a hospital in Rafah.

Gaza’s rescue services spokesman told French news agency AFP that the training facility was located in Tel el-Sultan in Rafah. Eye witnesses

and medical elements said that last October 13 Palestinians were hurt in an explosion at a Hamas building in Tel el-Sultan.

    Terrorists nabbed in Jenin
The IDF arrested 12 Islamic Jihad operatives in the Jenin area and closed down some offices affiliates with the group overnight Tuesday. The special operation was part of efforts to hurt the organization’s terror infrastructure in the area.

The IDF said that army forces did not meet any particular resistance, whereas Palestinians reported that some men tried to confront the army and were dispersed with shock grenades.

As part of the operation, the forces also closed down the offices of a charity group in Jenin which transferred funds for terrorist activity. The Al-Bara’ah foundation has ties with the Islamic Jihad and a Gaza group which are both considered illegal organizations working to hurt Israeli citizens.

The JP: Lawyers, not IDF, at forefront of battle against flotilla
    By Ron Friedman

Shurat HaDin aims to prevent blockade breach by bringing lawsuits in the US against companies offering services to participating ships.

Darshan-Leitner told The Jerusalem Post that Shurat HaDin had recently approached mobile satellite services company Inmarsat – the only company that provides communications and navigations services to ships that sail in the region – requesting that they refuse to provide their services to ships participating in the flotilla.

“We informed them that if they do so, they will be in violation of the American Neutrality Act, which prohibits aiding a group in their struggle against the military of an ally country,” said Darshan-Leitner. “Since Imarsat has offices in the US, the law binds them.”

The group has also sent letters to 30 of the top maritime insurance companies in the world announcing their intent to sue if they provide insurance to ships participating in the flotilla.

  10. Chase says:

I awoke this morning to the news that Sarah Palin had made a major revisionistic effort to rewrite history in regards to Paul Revere.

This was the headline piece put up by news.google.com:

I guess even Chris Wallace tried to allow her to backtrack, and she refused, saying she knew her history. Well, sorry, Chris, your credibility as a smart journalist has nose-dived along with the rest of the country who all jumped on the bandwagon and churned out the same anti-Sarah drivel, without checking beyone Longfellow’s poem and your public school education.

I went back after being distracted by work for several hours to the Tucson site to submit my earlier defense of Sarah’s reading of history, but of course the attempt to send my comment met with a ‘server down’ response. I closed the browser in a fit, then tried to find it via Google again.

Guess what. Google no longer shows it 5-pages deep in the search engine. No, I don’t expect Sarah will receive an apology. The lame and wrong white-washing has been done and it will go down for years like Dan Quayle’s potatoe fiasco (he was misled by the teacher of the class who actually put it on an a card like that, and he thoguht it was part of the exercise) and we’ll never hear the end of it from her no-nothing bashers.

I will give credit – it was quickly removed as well from Google News front page, but it was there briefly –

The lame stream media except for a few select newspapers like the Washington Times and Wall Street Journal and Fox News lost their integrity, ethics and souls a long, long time ago. When I was growing up in the late 50s, early 60s you could sort of trust what you read in the paper and for the most part on the tube but since the days of Woodward and Bernstein that has gone by the wayside.

And even the Internet you have to be extremely careful what you believe. It cracks me up when people tell me something is factual because they looked it up on Snopes who are one of the most left leaning sites out there.

    • Chase says:

I guess while I started, “Once again,..” I was referring this time to formerly respected journalists like Chris Wallace, who assumed that Palin was wrong, who did no checking, made evident that he too had simply drunk the kool-aid when he gave Gov. Palin an out for explaining herself.

Way too many suckers took the MSM ignorant line at face value, slipped along into the “dumb Palin” rut, and exposed themselves for their lack of historical knowledge, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity. And the MSM is our intellectual mentor!

I have to add too that it really bothers me that run-of-the-mill Americans can sit in their La-z-Boys, pop a can of beer, and in between reality T.V. shows dash off things about the stupidity of Palin – a former small-town mayor, State Governor, author, public speaker, successful business partner, mother, and as Governor, responsible for decisions and ideas regarding budget, hiring, firing, appointments, not to mention her work on the oil industry watchdog boards, and her successful negotiations and legistlating efforts to stand up to business interests for the sake of the people of the State of Alaska. But they just toss it off – she’s dumb.

In a report delivered to the House Budget Committee on June 2, the CBO said a “fair value” accounting of guaranteeing the two defunct mortgage companies – known as Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) – was more than twice as high as the Office of Management and Budget had accounted for.

$1,000,000 lawsuit claims two Canadian organizations raising money for flotilla are aiding and abetting Hamas terrorists.

… – The Canadian Boat to Gaza – to join the international flotilla to Gaza.

The suit, presented by Toronto barrister and law professor Ed Morgan and New York attorney and former AIPAC executive director Neal Sher to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on Monday, argues that the groups, Turtle Island Humanitarian Aid and Alternatives International, both based in Montreal, are part of a chain of conduct that “ultimately leads to the rocket attacks that have traumatized the plaintiff and caused her much suffering and loss.”

The complaint goes on to explains how Sderot has been the target of Kassam rocket attacks from Hamas terrorists inside Gaza since 2001, resulting in the deaths of numerous Israeli civilians and causing enormous trauma and property damage in Sderot and the surrounding region.

Success will also set a precedent for a wave of similar claims by other dual citizens.

It also requires public schools to determine students’ immigration status and makes it a crime to knowingly give an illegal immigrant a ride. Alabama employers are now required to determine if any new worker is in the country legally.

Bentley, a Republican, says he campaigned on passing the toughest anti-illegal immigration bill possible. He predicts the new law will pass court review.

Groups including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Montgomery-based Southern Poverty Law Center agree the new law is the nation’s toughest. They say they plan to challenge it.

Of course they do. What else is there to spend their democrat-funneled money on?
