Egypt continues to release countless al-Qaida prisoners.

NYT: Brother of al-Qaida’s No. 2 released by Egypt

CAIRO — The governing military council in Egypt released the younger brother of Ayman al-Zawahri, al-Qaida’s second in command, from prison Thursday…

Al-Zawahri was one of 59 political detainees released Thursday by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, the military-led transitional government, security officials said.

Since taking power after president Hosni Mubarak was toppled on Feb. 11, the Supreme Council has released 1,659 prisoners, security officials said. Of those, 904 were held on criminal charges and 755 were political prisoners…

Reporter said people happily changed that “allah is great” in arabic.

Meanwhile 54 mortar attacks from Gaza hit Israel, and the Israel of prime minister feels very alone. So, Russia is releasing tons of photos of 100s of thousands of Jews killed in holocast (sp?) to Israel to help them study and get closure as to what happened to their loved ones.

“Trump Has ‘Just a Little’ Doubt Obama Was Born in America”

    17 Mar 2011

    * * *

    Trump said …

“ … The reason I have a little doubt, just a little, is because he grew up and nobody knew him. When you interview people, if I ever got the nomination if I ever decide to run, you may go back and interview people from my kindergarten. They’ll remember me. Nobody ever comes forward. Nobody knows who is he until later in his life. It’s very strange. The whole thing is very strange.”

    * * *

How interesting that Trump confirms something that has been mentioned from time to time here on S&L, but which has generally been ignored by the mainstream media –– that practically nobody seems to have known Nerobama in his past. Or, if they knew him, they are not willing to come forward and talk about him.

    • proreason says:

      It’s not exactly true.

A handful of people in Indonesia have been interviewed. One (or perhaps two) of them said that when he was 8 or 9, he declared he wanted to be President. That is the reason I think his indoctrination began in Indonesia. First, it’s unimaginable that his mother would take him to a foreign country that had just undergone a bloody communist insurrection (but she did). So, the mixed breed American boy, son of an American hating mother, son of a father he hadn’t yet even met, stepson of an Indonesian native Muslim, in the late 60’s (when no black child had any prospects of becoming politically important), self-declared he wanted to be president. I don’t think so. If 1 in a million real American children of that age would say such a thing, I’d be surprised to hear it. For that strange boy with that strage upbringing in that strange environment, in that foreign country…either it was planted in his head, or the classmates made it up. I favor the planted in his head theory.

At least one high school acquantance in Hawaii has also been interviewed. He was a drug buddy and has now been pretty well shut down.

At Occidental, someone has come forward after the election to declare that little lenin was a full-blown revolutionary marxist at the ripe old age of 20. I don’t think his homosexual Pakistani roommates have ever granted an interview although their names are known.

At Columbia, I believe one professor has admitted he had Obama in his class. The student body president at the time, who says he knew everybody in school, or knew somebody who would have known everybody, says that he doesn’t know anybody who knew Obamy.

At Harvard (when he was already in his late 20’s), some poeple say they knew him, but there aren’t many who will say much about him. The actual editor of the Law Review said that Obamy (the titular editor) was only good at showing up and taking credit for stuff other people did. He never did anything himself.

There also aren’t many adult acquaintances who will talk about him. I’ve read an interview with a black guy who claimed to be his best friend, but he essentially said nothing about Obamy of any interest at all. I could have given more details about the boy king than his “best friend” gave.

Interesting sidelight on his acquaintances…there are no girlfriends, ever. Can you even imagine that no old girlfriend of the president of the United State would come forward to claim her 15 minutes of fame. It’s stunningly unbelievable, and the main proof that he is homosexual. (note: there is one story of a woman in Ayer’s biography of Obamy, but the story is clearly lifted from another Ayers book where Ayers talks about one of his old girlfriends.)

So the essence of Trump’s comment is true, although it isn’t explicitly true.

Btw, everybody has acquaintances, of course. Obamy himself is actually somewhat gregarious. He loves to party, and is a big boozer, smoker and druggie which is indicative of a socially-oriented personality. So how can it be that there are so few people who will talk about him? The answer, of course, is plainly obvious. Everybody who he has ever been friends with has been a radical, a marxist, or a homosexual. He hasn’t had a straight American friend in his life. They know who he is…but they aren’t going to say. The ones who might be inclined to talk are probably dead.

Who has the nerve to ask, “Who was your best man?” The answer would probably be, “That info is under seal in Hawaii, with the real birth certificate.”

    • proreason says:

The Moron’s brother Malik claimed in a 2004 interview that he and Obamy had been each other’s best man at their weddings.

Given the family’s propensity for lying, odds are that it isn’t true.

Malik doesn’t appear to have ever lived in the United States, and isn’t wealthy, so the trip would have been very expensive for a half-brother he hadn’t even met until 7 years prior. Obama at the time was heavily in debt, although he may have already scammed his book advance(s) (over 6 figures). Obama may also have envisioned that lovely Michelle’s family had money, and no doubt would have been willing to spend that many times over.

Even so, it seems a stretch that Malik and Obamy would really have been each other’s best men. It was more likely one of the boy king’s radical associates.

Here’s some recent campaigning for Sharia Law Obama did for his Lou tribe relatives. I did read Chapt of Obama Nation which is more in dept.

I named one of my rabbits Donald Trump (trump for short) when he was a financial ICON.
It would be great for someone to run if all they do is call an ace and ace. Trump might be the only one who can say somethings that the Republicans leaders are too cowardly to say.
On the really strange side, people are so wrapped up in tv that they might vote for Donald Trump.
He said he is willing to spend 600 million for the White House. At first I thought he was offering to buy the White House….the way the article headlined it.

Judge issues temporary restraining order for Wisc. law

    From NBC’s John Yang
A judge has temporarily blocked a controversial Wisconsin law that curbs collective bargaining rights for public employee unions.

The temporary restraining order is based on questions about the procedure by which the bill was passed, rather than upon the substance of the law itself.

Senate Republicans used a parliamentary maneuver to pass the law while Democrats were out of the state, trying to block a vote. Critics say the Republicans failed to give advance notice of their meeting, violating the state’s open meeting law that requires 24-hours advance notice of legislative meetings, or 2 hours in an emergency.

The judge’s order blocks the secretary of state from publishing the law, thus making it officially effective, until the legality of the bill’s passage is examined.

The law was scheduled to be published on Friday, March 25.

Oops. Illinois (the state of presidents) imposes tax on internet sales originating in Illinois, so Amazon terminates all affiliates in the state. Too bad for people who were making their livlihoods via Amazon.com in Illinois. Not only won’t Amazon be paying any Illinois taxes, the ex affiliates won’t be paying any taxes at all.

Who could have possibly imagined that Amazon wouldn’t be happy to contribute to redistributio in Illinois?

Of course, for the moment at least, people in Illinois will still be able to buy stuff from Amazon, just not through the recently unemployed local affiliates.

Western warplanes, missiles batter Libyan targets

Satellites closely monitoring Gaddafi’s Mustard Gas stores; 48 killed, 150 wounded in air strikes, state TV says; French planes, US and UK navies take out Libyan air defenses, tanks and air bases.

TRIPOLI – Western forces hit targets along the Libyan coast on Saturday, using strikes from air and sea to force Muammar Gaddafi’s troops to cease fire and end attacks on civilians.

French planes fired the first shots in what is the biggest international military intervention in the Arab world since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, destroying tanks and armored vehicles in the region of the rebels’ eastern stronghold, Benghazi.

Hours later, US and British warships and submarines launched 110 Tomahawk missiles against air defenses around the capital Tripoli and the western city of Misrata, which has been besieged by Gaddafi’s forces, US military officials said.

…According to a Washington Post report, Western reconnaissance satellites have been keeping close tabs on Libya’s chemical weapons stores.

… Last week, however, Libya’s former ambassador to the United Nations Abdurrahman Mohamed Shalgham warned that, “I do expect that he’s going to attack Benghazi with chemical weapons,” … stronghold.

“We think this will end Gaddafi’s rule. Libyans will never forget France’s stand with them. If it weren’t for them, then Benghazi would have been overrun tonight,” said Iyad Ali, 37.

“We salute France, Britain, the United States and the Arab countries for standing with Libya. But we think Gaddafi will take out his anger on civilians. So the West has to hit him hard,” said civil servant Khalid al-Ghurfaly, 38.

In Tripoli, several thousand people gathered at the Bab al-Aziziyah palace, Gaddafi’s compound bombed by US warplanes in 1986, to show their support.

“We will open up Libya’s deserts and allow Africans to flood to Europe to blow themselves up as suicide bombers.”

    • proreason says:

I hate to say it, but the Moron might have stumbled into the right approach with Libya.

First, that country is no threat to the US, and not much of a threat to the region. Since Gaddafi Duck gave up his nuclear program, one could make a good case that we have no business there at all. Yet, it is certainly tragic to watch another maniac slaughter his own people, so I can understand why some people say that the former greatest country on earth ought to do something. The problem with that, of course, is that we already have two interventions going in far more important countries, and a third one might be the last straw. And, of course, there is the fact that Dear Leader is someone who is incapable and uninterested in doing anything that might help the United States.

So given all that, letting France, the useless United Nations, et al, take the lead looks to be a decent approach, for the moment at least.

A bonus would be if the Moron loses enough support on the left that it dimishes her reelection campaign.

Since Obama is so reluctant to aid Libya against monster Gaddafi, yet so willing to give Cairo billions of dollars when they are still celebrating and releasing al-qaeda prisoners. Obama forcing our troops to
get blown up providing humanity service to Afghanistan. Well, France has helped us. Libya is always shooting rockets at Israel. Obama’s reluctance might mean this is good. I’m glad that reporters on the scene are saying Gaddafi’s claim civilian casualties being murdered is not true. I pray it’s over swiftly.

Oh my gosh! . John Kerry was just huffing and puffing on news making it clear that in no way is this an effort to get rid of Gaddafi. We aren’t doing this so he goes. So what’s the point. All the more Obama was very reluctant for self-purpose reasons to show his love for a monster.

This guy beat me to something I’ve been thinking about, but he says it much better than I would.

He’s a commentor on a blog, not someone with a website:

    “What I like about Obama”

“Obviously, the biggest problem with Bush was sending the military into an Arab Muslim country that hadn’t even attacked us. Among the several things that made that offensive were
    * the rush to war – it was only several months after the possibility of military involvement was raised that combat operations began
    * lack of United Nations sanction – only 17 relevant resolutions were ever passed before they were enforced

But anyway, what I really like about Obama is that he’s gone 29-3 in his bracket picks over the first two days. You have to spend a lot of time watching college basketball to be that good.”

Liberal Democrats in uproar over Libya action Liberal Democrats in uproar over Libya action

A hard-core group of liberal House Democrats is questioning the constitutionality of U.S. missile strikes against Libya, with one lawmaker raising the prospect of impeachment during a Democratic Caucus conference call on Saturday.

Reps. Jerrold Nadler (N.Y.), Donna Edwards (Md.), Mike Capuano (Mass.), Dennis Kucinich (Ohio), Maxine Waters (Calif.), Rob Andrews (N.J.), Sheila Jackson Lee (Texas), Barbara Lee (Calif.) and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D.C.) “all strongly raised objections to the constitutionality of the president’s actions” during that call, said two Democratic lawmakers who took part.

Kucinich, who wanted to bring impeachment articles against both former President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney over Iraq — only to be blocked by his own leadership — asked why the U.S. missile strikes aren’t impeachable offenses.

As crazy as he is – when it comes to war – Kucinich at least remains true to his ‘vote’ (I can’t even write the words values or beliefs when in reference to the Kooky munchkin from the mistake on the lake) – no matter what their Party.

And at the same time – Farrakhan is calling out The Won. How quickly the love fads when bombs are dropped.

Imagine that – start a war and have everyone turn on you – Who’d thunk that?

I figured that The Big O was following the Slick Willie diversion technique – LOOK OVER THERE – while smuggling Monica out of the White House under a tablecloth. Wasn’t the bomb Clinton dropped – just before he got Impeached? (ok Aug to Oct – that’s no time at all in DC time).

    FOX: http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2011/03/20/filmmaker-michael-moore-rips-president-obama-libya/?test=faces

Filmmaker Michael Moore slammed President Obama in a string of tweets for taking military action in Libya.

Moore, who frequently criticized President George Bush for launching the Iraq War, compared the U.S. military’s mission in Libya to Iraq and Afghanistan in several Twitter messages sent Saturday.

Moore’s comments came after the U.S. troops launched 110 Tomahawk missiles at military targets in Libya as part of an allied effort to prevent forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi from overtaking the rebel-held city of Benghazi.

The strikes on Libya began on the eighth anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq War.

Obama explained Saturday the U.S. and its allies acted to protect the Libyan people from a potential massacre.

As regards Moore: “Even a busted clock is right twice a day.”

Did Obama forget to get congressional vote before air-raid?

The Examiner: Dennis Kucinich wants to impeach Obama over Libya strike

    Mar 20 2011

….One has to wonder, therefore, why liberal Democrats in the House of Representatives are up in arms (bad metaphor choice) over Obama’s latest constitutional override in ordering missile strikes against Libya without congressional authorization. A group that includes such hard-left members as Jerrold Nadler (NY), Maxine Waters (CA), Sheila Jackson Lee (TX), Dennis Kucinich (OH), and Barbara Lee (CA) took part in a conference call on Saturday in which they voiced strenuous objections to these actions. Kucinich, arguably the most radical of the bunch, went so far as to broach the subject of impeachment….

…The organizer of the call was Rep. John Larson (CT), fourth-highest ranking Democrat, who stated:

They consulted the Arab League. They consulted the United Nations. They did not consult the United States Congress….

The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation…

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

This is all very intriguing and I’ve been following it since Michelle Malkin posted Kucinich’s objections last weekend. http://michellemalkin.com/2011/03/20/dennis-kucinich-2/

Conservatives should embrace this. For how solid a victory it would be to have his own uber-left dip-wads smack him down. But something inside of me says that will never happen. Why, exactly, I don’t know other than it’s been shown that his regular ignoring of US law has simply resulted in a whole lotta nothing each and every time. So the esteemed Maxine, Lee (X2) Nadler the enabler, and so on are just posturing. If Hitlery gets involved and speaks out, then we’ll know something’s up. But for now, this has all gone largely unnoticed.

“Now the skeptical, old and ignorant Cindy Sheehan would have thought that the US was only concerned with the regime in Libya “killing its own citizens” because Libya has large crude oil reserves, but that was before I reflected on the fact that Barack Obama (D) has told us that offshore drilling and nuclear power is safe! Like my new hero, Barack Obama (D) keeps saying, we do need to “reduce” US dependence on “foreign oil,” but not before we kill as many people as we must to get all of that oil. The old me also would have thought that we needed to entirely eliminate our dependence on petroleum and petroleum products all together, but if Barack Obama (D) says it’s safe, that’s good enough for me!”

Hundreds of Islamists stone Egypt’s ElBaradei

AFP – Egyptian opposition leader and former UN nuclear watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei is led to safety. Islamists … .by Mona Salem Mar 19, 23011

CAIRO (AFP) – Islamists hurled stones and shoes at Mohamed ElBaradei, Nobel Peace laureate and a secular contender for Egypt’s presidency, as he tried to vote Saturday in a referendum on constitutional amendments.

“We don’t want you,” the mob shouted, throwing stones, shoes and water at the former UN nuclear watchdog chief as he turned up at a Cairo polling station, five weeks after president Hosni Mubarak was ousted by mass protests.

ElBaradei beat a retreat to his car and left without voting at the polling station in Muqattam, a largely poor district in south Cairo.

“Went 2 vote w family attacked by organized thugs. Car smashed w rocks. Holding referendum in absence of law & order is an irresponsible act,” he wrote on Twitter.

Members of the crowd interviewed by AFP before the assault identified themselves as Islamists without elaborating on their precise allegiance.

“There are many types of Islamists. It’s impossible that it was Muslim Brotherhood members, 100 percent impossible….

The main advocates of a “yes” vote have been the Muslim Brotherhood — powerful and well-organised despite being outlawed under Mubarak — and elements of the former ruling National Democratic Party.

From a twisted view by NYT

NYT: Egyptian Voters Approve Constitutional Changes

By Neil MacFarquhar Mar 20, 2011

CAIRO — Egyptian voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum on constitutional changes on Sunday that will usher in rapid elections,…

The Muslim Brotherhood and remnant elements of the National Democratic Party, which dominated Egyptian politics for decades, were the main supporters of the referendum. They argued that the election timetable would ensure a swift return to civilian rule.

Members of the liberal wing of Egyptian politics mostly opposed the measure, saying that they lacked time to form effective political organizations. They said early elections would benefit the Brotherhood and the old governing party, which they warned would seek to write a constitution that centralizes power, much like the old one.

Voters were asked to either accept or reject eight constitutional amendments as a whole — all of them designed to establish the foundations for coming elections….

… The amendments were announced Feb. 25 after virtually no public discussion by an 11-member committee of experts chosen by the military.

“It is very, very disappointing,” said Hani Shukrallah, who is active in a new liberal political party and is the editor of Ahram Online, a news Web site.

He and many other opponents of the referendum said religious organizations had spread false rumors, suggesting that voting against the referendum would threaten Article 2 of the Constitution, which cites Islamic law as the main basis for Egyptian law.

“I saw one sign that said, ‘If you vote no you are a follower of America and Baradei, and if you vote yes you are a follower of God,’ ” he said…

In a vote remarkably free of problems, Mr. Baradei was attacked by a mob when he went to cast his ballot, fleeing a shower of rocks and bottles. His supporters said the mob was paid….

Essam el-Erian, the spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, hailed the results,…

It was the first time the Muslim Brotherhood had campaigned openly since the party was banned in 1954, and the group flexed its full organizational muscle — printing up countless fliers and posters, sending workers out to convince the undecided and driving voters to the polls…

“The results of the referendum make me worried about Egypt’s political future,” Mr. Maher said, vowing to redouble his efforts to get out onto the streets to organize before the elections. “The interference of religion in politics can destroy Egypt.”

Liam Stack and Amr Emam contributed reporting

“In a vote remarkably free of problems, Mr. Baradei was attacked by a mob when he went to cast his ballot, fleeing a shower of rocks and bottles. His supporters said the mob was paid.”

what? Maybe MacFARQHAR wrote with humor. Or having lived over 25 years in middle-east countries he thinks a paid mob throwing stones and bottles and the muslim brotherhood running the entire constitution and and election is a democracy.

Obama must be glowing with happiness.

The ‘Kill Team’ Images: US Army Apologizes for Horrific Photos
By Matthias Gebauer and Hasnain Kazim
The United States and NATO are concerned that reactions could be intense to the publication of images documenting killings committed by US soldiers in Afghanistan. The images appeared in the most recent edition of SPIEGEL, which hit the newsstands on Monday.

If you go to the Army Times – you get a clearer (i.e. more factual) picture: It was a platoon (30 members) whose SSG came up with this idea while smoking hash and drinking with the guys (against the UCMJ) and oh, yeah the First Sergeant allowed (and one must assume told) the SSG to beat up the PVT who squealed on his rouge members – The first Article 32 hearing is on Thursday. So the Army has been investigating this for a long time (and btw, not mentioned – is that the 3 civilians pictured – are the only civilians killed). . .

Once again speaking truth to power – and another 12 soldiers out of a US Armed Forces of 2 million are going to be used to paint them all as ‘baby killers’ who are out of control, dangerous and need to be done away with. . .Meanwhile, we must not ever, ever rush to judgment on MAJ Hasan’s reason for killing 13 and injuring 32 of his fellow soldiers.

And I’m not sure that’s a smile. I tend to show my teeth when I’m lifting something, and dead weight is major heavy.

Point is this company has one of the most dangerous missions in Afghanistan and have continued to have heavy loss, to include prior to this incident. How can our soldiers trust anyone, yet alone the Afghan police who have screwed them, which increased once Obama came into office. There is heavy drug testing too. And, if these civilians weren’t planting bombs at the time, maybe they needed to be taken out. Too bad the enemies can shoot at our soldiers but once they lower their guns, our soldiers have to cease fire, and worry when they’ll hit at them next.

13 Illegal Immigrants Arrested in California Wearing U.S. Marine Uniforms

    By Joshua Rhett Miller

Border Patrol agents recently arrested 13 illegal immigrants disguised as U.S. Marines and riding in a fake military van, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday.

The illegal immigrants were clad in Marine uniforms when they were apprehended at the Campo Border Patrol Westbound I-8 checkpoint at 11 p.m. on March 14 near Pine Valley, Calif., border officials said. Two U.S. citizens in the van also were arrested.

After the suspicious white van was subjected to secondary inspection, it was determined that the driver of the vehicle and its front seat passenger were U.S. citizens who were attempting to smuggle 13 illegal immigrants into the United States. All of the vehicle’s occupants wore U.S. Marine uniforms, reportedly emblazoned with the name “Perez.”

“This effort is an example of the lengths smugglers will go to avoid detection, and the skilled and effective police work and vigilance displayed everyday by Customs and Border Protection personnel,” the agency said in a written statement.

The van used in the smuggling attempt, according to California’s El Centro Border Intelligence Center, was a privately owned vehicle registered out of Yucca Valley, Calif., and was bearing stolen government plates that had been defaced. The center digit — 0 — was altered to read as an 8. Further research through multiple government agencies determined that the plate belonged to a one-ton cargo van registered to the U.S. Marine Corps.

How long before they thing to use different name tags and more skill is used than to Sharpie a “0” into an “8” on a plate?

Palin at Kotel tunnel: Israel too apologetic

By Melanie Lidman and Gil Hoffman

Former American vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin expressed support for Jews praying openly on the Temple Mount on a visit to the Old City of Jerusalem on Sunday, officials who accompanied Palin said.

Palin and her husband Todd arrived for a two-day visit on Sunday afternoon and toured the Western Wall and its adjacent tunnels. They will visit the Old City again on Monday, tour Gesthsemane and the Mount of Olives, and have dinner with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara at their official residence in Jerusalem.

Netanyahu has already met in Jerusalem over the last two months with a number of leading US politicians considered as likely candidates for the Republican presidential nomination, including former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.

World Likud chairman and Likud MK Danny Danon and Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz served as Palin’s tour guides on Sunday night. Palin was told that Jews were not allowed to pray openly on the Temple Mount and about the Arab riots that accompanied Netanyahu’s decision to authorize the creation of an exit from the Western Wall tunnels in 1996.

“Why are you apologizing all the time?” Palin asked her guides.

Palin expressed regret that she would not be able to visit Nazareth or Bethlehem during her brief stay in Israel, but promised that she would soon come back for longer.

“It’s overwhelming to be able to see and touch the cornerstone of our faith,” Palin told reporters upon exiting the tunnels. “I’m so thankful to be able to be here, and I’m thankful to know the Israel-American connection will grow and strengthen as the peace negotiations continue.”

Why is there even any mention of other potential GOP candidates in 2012?

Every time she does something like this she only earns more of my respect:

“She didn’t go into diplomatic issues, but I can clearly say from the questions she asked in relation to our conflict here with the Muslims in these holy sites that she knows that we are right and that the Muslims are just claiming things for provocation and they’re not right,” Danon said.

yahoo..With Yemen crumbling, US sees fragile counterterrorism ally fading, and few good options ahead

By Adam Goldman,Matt Apuzzo, The Associated Press | The Canadian Press – Tue, 22 Mar, 2011 7:45

WASHINGTON – For two years, the Obama administration has had a relationship of convenience with Yemen: The U.S. kept the Yemeni government armed and flush with cash. In return, Yemen’s leaders helped fight al-Qaida or, as often, looked the other way while the U.S. did.

Several foreign diplomats have turned against him. On Monday, three senior army commanders joined a protest movement calling for his ouster.

There is a secessionist movement in the south. Pirates roam its waters. A rebellion in the north has been a proxy fight between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Half of Yemen’s citizens are illiterate. A third are unemployed. Drinking water is scarce, yet the population is growing at one of the fastest clips in the world, far outpacing the government’s ability to provide even the most basic services. Half the country lacks toilets.

… The attacks grabbed the attention of Washington, which previously had regarded the terrorist group as a threat only in the Middle East.

Despite the recent push, the U.S. still has little clarity about what the Yemeni government would look like without Saleh. The Obama administration has not speculated publicly about it, but officials believe the two countries share a counterterrorism interest that goes beyond any one person.

…. Because the government there is notoriously secretive, and influence is traded among tribal and tribal leaders, the U.S. has struggled to understand the world behind Saleh’s leadership.

“I don’t think we know who runs Yemen and what they think,” said Christopher Boucek, a scholar….”

Judge orders use of Islamic law in Tampa lawsuit over mosque leadership

TAMPA – The question of what law applies in any Florida courtroom usually comes down to two choices: federal or state.

.But Hillsborough Circuit Judge Richard Nielsen is being attacked by conservative bloggers after he ruled in a lawsuit March 3 that, to resolve one crucial issue in the case, he will consult a different source.

Tampa Bay: Judge orders use of Islamic law in Tampa lawsuit over mosque leadership

    By William R. Levesque
    March 22, 2011

    TAMPA —
Nielsen said he will decide in a lawsuit against a local mosque, the Islamic Education Center of Tampa, whether the parties in the litigation properly followed the teachings of the Koran in obtaining an arbitration decision from an Islamic scholar.

But attorney Paul Thanasides last week appealed Nielson’s decision with the 2nd District Court of Appeal, saying religion has no place in a secular court.

The judge’s ruling comes as conservative lawmakers in Florida and around the nation are increasingly discussing legislation to ban or curtail the use of Islamic law, sometimes called sharia law, in U.S. courts.

Two Florida Republicans, Sen. Alan Hays and Rep. Larry Metz, this month announced legislation to prevent Islamic law, or any foreign legal code, from being applied in state courts.

The Tampa case is drawing attention from some who cite it as proof judges are improperly using foreign law.

The ex-trustees then asked Judge Nielsen to enforce the arbitration award, which could wrest control of the money from the mosque’s current leaders.

“It appears that the Koran provides that where two or more brothers have a dispute, they are first required to try to resolve the dispute among themselves,” the judge told attorneys, according to a transcript of proceedings.

“If that does not occur, they can agree to present the dispute to the greater community of brothers within the mosque or the Muslim community. And if that is not done, or does not result in a resolution of the dispute, then it is to be presented to an Islamic judge …

The judge said he would use Islamic law to decide only the legitimacy of arbitration.

Explosion at Jerusalem bus stop kills 1, wounds 38
Blast comes amid rising tension between Hamas militants and Israel
    msnbc.com news services

JERUSALEM — A bomb exploded at a crowded bus stop Wednesday in central Jerusalem, killing one woman and wounding 38 in what appeared to be the first militant attack in the city in several years.

The blast could be heard throughout Jerusalem and blew out the windows of two crowded buses.

No one claimed responsibility for the bombing, which coincided with an upsurge of violence on the Gaza border that has led to fears of a new war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip. Israeli police blamed Palestinian militants, calling the blast a “terrorist” attack. (Heaven forbid, that!)

A woman died of wounds from the explosion, Israel Radio reported. Israel’s national rescue service said 15 people were seriously wounded, several critically. Rescuers were seen removing bloodied people from the area on stretchers.

Yitzhak Aharonovich, Israel’s minister of public security, said militants planted a 2-pound device in a bag on the sidewalk. An Israeli Embassy official in Washington told NBC News that it appeared the bomb was placed in a phone booth next to the bus stop. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, also believed it to be a terrorist attack.

Meir Hagid, one of the bus drivers, said he heard a loud explosion as he drove by the site, located near the main entrance to Jerusalem and its central bus station.

“I heard the explosion in the bus stop,” he said. He halted his vehicle and people got off. He said nobody in his bus was hurt.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu postponed a trip to Russia after the bombing, his office said. He had been scheduled to hold talks with Russian leaders in Moscow on Wednesday and return on Thursday.

Jerusalem suffered dozens of suicide bombings that targeted buses and restaurants during the second Palestinian uprising last decade. But the attacks were halted in recent years. Jerusalem last experienced a suicide bombing in 2004. (Uh…really? Really?!?)

TRIPOLI, Libya — Western airstrikes Wednesday hammered Libyan government tanks and artillery that were shelling the rebel-held city of Misurata, residents reported, but sniper fire from downtown rooftops continued to claim civilian lives…

Loyalist tanks resumed their bombardment of the city Wednesday night after a daylong lull. Following the pre-dawn airstrikes, the tanks retreated from the city center, although a sniper continued to terrorize residents, killing at least four, according to a doctor in the Misurata’s hospital.

But after nightfall, the tanks returned and began indiscriminately shelling the city center, including the area around the hospital,…

“They are shelling everywhere,” he said. One shell landed near the hospital, he said, and two people were hurt.

The doctor said conditions at the hospital were critical, with patients being treated on the floor and all medical supplies and medicines in short supply. The hospital has a generator, but fuel is running low and water supplies have been cut off, he said.

“These strikes give us hope, especially the fact they are precise and are targeting the [Gaddafi] forces and not only the bases,” Reuters quoted him as saying….

The coalition strikes did not stop snipers loyal to Gaddafi from shooting people from rooftops in the center of Misurata, apparently targeting people trying to gain access to a hospital where hundreds of wounded people are being treated, news agencies said.

Among the fatalities were at least three people who were shot near the hospital, Reuters reported…

JERUSALEM – Israel is handing back ownership of a czarist-era landmark in the heart of Jerusalem to Russia, defusing a long-simmering dispute between the two countries right before Israel’s leader visits Moscow.

The return of ownership of the property known as Sergei’s Courtyard, approved in 2008, appeared to be a goodwill gesture ahead of the visit.

The hewn stone building, built in 1890 to accommodate Russian pilgrims to the Holy Land, is a prominent edifice on the Jerusalem landscape with its soaring turret and lush garden.

“Israel is vacating Sergei’s Courtyard in accordance with the understandings reached between Israel and the Russian Federation,” …

The site was named for Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, a son of Czar Alexander III, and is part of a complex known as the Russian Compound. Israel bought most of it from the Soviet Union in the early 1960s, paying with oranges because it didn’t have hard currency….

Russian officials were not immediately available for comment but Moscow has said in the past the building would be used as a Russian cultural center to “promote bilateral relations” between the two countries.

Court of Appeals reinstates Milwaukee sick pay law

By Georgia Pabst and Sharif Durhams

The Wisconsin Court of Appeals on Thursday upheld Milwaukee’s paid sick-day ordinance, which was halted by an injunction two years ago.

The injunction sought by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce prevented the city from mandating that private-sector employees must offer paid sick leave to all full-time, part-time and temporary employees.

The business organization called the ordinance a job killer for the city and has challenged the legality of the measure, which was passed with 69% of the vote in the November 2008 election.

Supporters argued that workers should not be forced to choose between being sick or caring for a sick child and a paycheck.

Robert Kraig of Citizen Action of Wisconsin, said the decision was a victory for democracy. “Seventy percent of Milwaukee voters voted for this. Close to 40,000 people signed a petition in favor of it.

“We think it is very good policy for the vast majority of Milwaukee voters,” he said.

The decision also is good news for working people who want to stay in their jobs and support families, Kraig said.

“We’re obviously disappointed with the decision,” Steve Baas, director of governmental affairs for the MMAC, said in a call from Chicago. MMAC officials, including president Tim Sheehy, are scattered all over the country today trying to attract jobs, he said.

“Meanwhile, we get a ruling like this that will make it more expensive to bring jobs to Milwaukee. It’s an ironic whammy,” he said. “It will have a chilling effect on the economy and will be bad for our competitiveness.”

MMAC attorneys are still reviewing the decision, he said. And the organization will continue to look for ways to get rid of the ordinance, including working to pass pending state legislation in Madison that would nullify the city’s ordinance.

A bill passed by the state Senate would nullify the city’s ordinance. It would require family and medical leave to be uniform throughout the state and would not allow a city, village, town or county to enact an ordinance to provide employees with more leave. Baas said the MMAC have been working closely with legislators to get that measure passed.

The city’s paid sick day ordinance would require large businesses to provide employees with up to nine sick days a year, while small businesses would have to provide up to five sick days.

In the ruling, the Court of Appeals wrote that the ordinance does not violate any of the statutory or constitutional provisions raised by the MMAC, which sued the city. …

    From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Appeals panel: Supreme Court should take up collective bargaining law

By Patrick Marley and Lee Bergquist

Madison — A state appeals panel said Thursday a case over a new collective bargaining law should go directly to the state Supreme Court.

The move puts the issue squarely before the Supreme Court less than two weeks before Justice David Prosser faces re-election.

It is at the high court’s discretion on whether it takes the case. It is not clear how quickly the court will decide whether to take it and, if it does, how soon it would issue a ruling.

The case is closely watched because it will determine whether the new law eliminating most collective bargaining for public employee unions will take effect. The plan by Republican Gov. Scott Walker drew swarms of protesters to the Capitol for weeks and brought a national focus on Wisconsin.

The appeals court did not weigh in on the merits of the case, instead saying the Supreme Court should take up the issue directly. The high court needs to rule because of conflicting past decisions, the appeals court said.

“Plainly, this case has broad statewide implications for the general public and those most directly affected by the challenged Act, in addition to those interested in the manner of its passage,” said the unanimous decision by Judges Brian Blanchard, Paul Higginbotham and Paul Lundsten.

At its heart, the case centers on the extent to which the public, under the state constitution, has a right to access the Legislature.

The next step is for the Supreme Court to decide whether to take the case. Four of the seven justices would have to agree to take the case.

If the Supreme Court decides not to take the case, the appeals court would then have to decide whether to rule on the issue or leave the matter with the circuit court.

Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi last week issued a temporary restraining order barring the new law from going into effect. She issued the order because she said a complaint is likely to succeed in its claim that lawmakers violated the open meetings law when they passed the collective bargaining measure.

Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen responded by asking a state appeals court to lift the restraining order, arguing in part that Sumi overreached by ruling on the conduct of a separate branch of government.

The Dane County district attorney, a Democrat, filed the complaint, and amended it on Wednesday, arguing that legislators violated both the open meetings law and the state constitution.

District Attorney Ismael Ozanne said Republican lawmakers violated the state constitution when they held a conference committee of the Senate and Assembly without providing adequate public notice – and at a time when access to the Capitol was restricted. Republicans have maintained that they were following their own legislative rules, allowing them to provide less public notice in this case. Republicans also argued that even though police were restricting entry into and around the Capitol at the time of the vote, there was adequate public access. …

So the template is set – fill the capitol with aggressive protesters causing the police to limit access to the building, and the legislature will never be allowed to vote on anything.

I wonder if that will work when Democrats once again have control and ram through the inevitable tax increases?

Gorelick joined the Washington, D.C. law firm Miller, Cassidy, Larroca and Lewin in 1975 and worked for them as a litigator until 1993, except for 1979 to 1980 when she was an assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Energy.

Under the Clinton administration, Gorelick served as general counsel of the Department of Defense from 1993 to 1994, when she was appointed Deputy Attorney General of the United States, the No. 2 position in the Department of Justice. Gorelick served as Vice Chairman of the Federal National Mortgage Association from 1997 to 2003.

While serving as Deputy Attorney General under Bill Clinton, Gorelick spoke in favor of banning the use of strong encryption and called for a key escrow system to allow the Federal government access to encrypted communication.[5]

Gorelick is currently a lobbyist for the lending industry fighting student loan reform[6]
[edit] Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae)

Even though she had no previous training nor experience in finance, Gorelick was appointed Vice Chairman of Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) from 1997 to 2003. She served alongside former Clinton Administration official Franklin Raines.[7] During that period, Fannie Mae developed a $10 billion accounting scandal.[8]

In an additional scandal concerning falsified financial transactions that helped the company meet earnings targets for 1998, a “manipulation” that triggered multimillion-dollar bonuses for top executives,[11] Gorelick received $779,625.

Investigation by the OFHEO detailed in their official report on the accounting scandal in 2006 on page 66 that from 1998 to 2002 Gorelick received a total of $26,466,834.00 in income.

According to Gorelick’s op-ed letter in the Washington Post[12] she states that: “At last week’s hearing, Attorney General John Ashcroft, facing criticism, asserted that ‘the single greatest structural cause for September 11 was the wall that segregated criminal investigators and intelligence agents’ and that I built that wall through a March 1995 memo.” See original memo: [1]…..(see pdf link below)

However, the “Gorelick Wall” barred anti-terror investigators from accessing the computer of Zacarias Moussaoui, the 20th hijacker, already in custody on an immigration violation.[citation needed] “During the time of Ms. Gorelick’s 1995 memo, the issue causing the most tension between the Reno-Gorelick Justice Department and Director Freeh’s FBI was not counterterrorism but widely reported allegations of contributions to the Clinton-Gore campaign from foreign sources, involving the likes of John Huang and Charlie Trie.” [15] Mr. Trie later told investigators that between 1994 and 1996 he raised some $1.2 million, much of it from foreign sources whose identities were hidden by straw donors.

“Zacarias Moussaoui, the 20th hijacker,” wiki left out that Moussaoui failed pilot flight school in Norman OK and went to MO bribing with money a flight school, who turned him into the FBI. Inspite of this, and his being illegally in the country, the CIA refused to meet FBI’s request for warrants.

1995 memo from Gorelick after 1st WTC bombing. Frankly I believe it was for Clinton’s agenda.

Tories fall, election set for May

By David Akin, Parliamentary Bureau Chief

OTTAWA – After more than five years as the leader of minority government, Prime Minister Stephen Harper finally lost the confidence of the House of Commons on Friday and will ask Gov. Gen. David Johnston Saturday morning to dissolve Parliament for a general election widely expected to be held on May 2.

No prime minister of a minority government in Canada’s history went as long as Harper without losing a vote of confidence.

“The vote today, which obviously disappoints me, will, I suspect, disappoint most Canadians,” Harper told reporters shortly after his government fell.

“Mr. Ignatieff and his coalition partners in the NDP and Bloc Quebecois made abundantly clear that they had already decided they wanted to force an election instead — Canada’s fourth election in seven years, an election Canadians had told them clearly that they do not want.”

Now, mind you, it’s fun for us Canadian conservatives to brag to our American counterparts everytime Mr. Harper gets reelected (and, of course, to ask “how’s that fella y’all elected working out for you?”) but these elections are expensive and somewhat tedious.
Every poll of every political stripe indicates that we’ll wind up with what we got the last three times; a Conservative minority government (and a bill for three hundred million bucks that we can ill afford).
