Collective bargaining bill published despite restraining order!

Madison – A controversial bill limiting collective bargaining for public workers has been officially published despite a temporary restraining order barring its publication by one state official.

The legislation was published Friday with a footnote that acknowledges the restraining order, but says state law “requires the Legislative Reference Bureau to publish every act within 10 working days after its date of enactment.”

Laws normally take effect a day after they are published, and Gov. Scott Walker’s administration is proceeding as if it takes effect Saturday.

“Today the administration was notified that the LRB published the budget-repair bill as required by law,” said a statement from Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch. “The administration will carry out the law as required.”

Its law, so expect Dems to go into meltdown over it.

    • JohnMG says:

Ya’ gotta’ love ’em. Those who would thwart the new legislation claiming that Walker has done an end-run around their constitution are the first to cheer-lead Obama who has gone forward with Obama-Scare even though the bill has been declared unconstitutional. Yes, the Same Obama who is sueing Arizona for ENFORCING Federal laws. The same Obama who by-passed Congress and sent our military assets into harms way in Lybia. The same Obama whose Justice Department (what a mis-nomer that is) refuses to prosecute voter intimidation charges against the NBP Party.

This list is endless. But we’re supposed to believe Scott Walker is a dictator even though he followed the democratic process.

What arrogant bastards are these people!

    • tranquil.night says:

The best part about this is how Judge Sumi ordered the injunction against the Senate Majority leader when law states that passed legislation gets published by the LRB within 10 days. It couldn’t be clearer how clueless this activist judge is to her own states laws, illustrating all the more how she was attempting to merely legislate from the bench. What’s better is she couldn’t rush to correct her ruling because of that all important multi-week vacation that had rushed it originally.

Isn’t poetic justice for cheaters a beautiful thing?

It is hopeless arguing with them. Know someone who fought in Vietnam with a big big lifelong chip.
Try and talk about what’s going on, and oh no. well. who cares.

Russian forces have killed 17 rebels during fighting in the volatile North Caucasus region, officials have said.

Russia has been struggling to combat an Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus, where insurgents want to create an Islamic state.

“Suicide bomber terrorists were being trained there, in particular for terrorist attacks in the republics of North Ossetia and Ingushetia,” he added.

Tanzanian ‘miracle’ pastor Mwasapile calls for a break

Ambilikile “Babu” Mwasapile, 76, says he does not want any new arrivals until after Friday 1 April, to let the crowds die down.

Belief in magic and the powers of traditional healers are widespread in Tanzania.

Some witchdoctors say that the body parts of people with albinism are effective when making magic charms, leading to the killing of dozens of albinos in recent years.

Queue of cars waiting to see Rev Mwasapile The queues stretched for 26km (16 miles) down the road

…some people have even been taken out of hospital by their relatives who believe they are more likely to be cured by Mr Mwasapile.

Some of these have died before seeing him, while others are reported to have died after taking his concoction.

He said tests were now being conducted to see if it has any medicinal properties.

Extra police have been deployed to the area to control the huge crowds, some of whom have travelled from neighbouring countries such as Kenya and even further afield.

Meanwhile, Yemeni independent news website Marib Press reported that at least seven soldiers were killed in the terrorist attack….

Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula has launched a string of attacks against the military and security forces in troubled Marib and the southern provinces since 2009. It has already taken over four small towns in south Yemen, according to a government official in Sanaa.

The Telegraph: Libya rebel commander admits his fighters have al-Qaeda links

By Praveen Swami, Nick Squires and Duncan Gardham 25 Mar 2011

Abdel-Hakim al-Hasidi, the Libyan rebel leader, has said jihadists who fought against allied troops in Iraq are on the front lines of the battle against Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.

Mr al-Hasidi insisted his fighters “are patriots and good Muslims, not terrorists,” but added that the “members of al-Qaeda are also good Muslims and are fighting against the invader”.

Mr al-Hasidi admitted he had earlier fought against “the foreign invasion” in Afghanistan, before being “captured in 2002 in Peshwar, in Pakistan”. He was later handed over to the US, and then held in Libya before being released in 2008.

      update from BBC
      28 March 2011

BBC: Yemen weapons factory hit by deadly explosions

A series of huge explosions at an ammunition plant in southern Yemen has killed at least 78 people, doctors say.

The factory in the town of Jaar was raided by Islamist militants on Sunday amid clashes with government forces.

At the time of Monday’s blasts residents were in the plant looting ammunition. The dead included women and children, officials said.

“This accident is a true catastrophe, the first of its kind in Abyan,” a doctor told Reuters news agency.

“There are so many burned bodies. I can’t even describe the situation.”

Doctors said counting the dead was almost impossible…

Analysts fear that the group, which claims affiliation with Osama Bin Laden’s militant network, is taking advantage of instability caused by the spate of anti-government protests.

Birthing tourism: San Gabriel maternity center for Chinese women shut down

    March 25, 2011
    By Ching-Ching Ni
    Los Angeles Times

Pregnant women came from China to three identical townhouses to receive care before and after giving birth to U.S. citizens at local hospitals.
Southern California has become a hub of so-called birthing tourism. Operators of such centers tend to try to blend in, attracting as little attention as possible… The homes, officials said, had been converted into maternity centers. Inside, they found about 10 mothers and seven newborns.

The city fined the manager of the property, Dwight Chang of Arcadia, $800. He was cited for illegal construction and ordered to acquire permits and return the buildings to their original condition.

It felt like something wasn’t right in there,” said Taylor Alderson, who was shocked to hear what had been going on next door. “There was a constant barrage of pregnant women going in and out of the house.”

She said she rarely heard babies cry. But she was annoyed by the stream of traffic from visitors delivering baby products and the strong smell of “cheap canola oil” being used to stir fry vegetables.

The actual deliveries take place in local hospitals. At birthing centers such as the one closed in San Gabriel, mothers get room and board and care before and after delivery.
It is not illegal for pregnant women to travel to the U.S. to give birth. Birthing centers advertise in wealthier Chinese cities, where some women can afford the thousands necessary to make the trip to America for a few months.

Most of the women go back to China after giving birth. But they know their children can return easily in the future to enjoy such benefits as free public education.

This article does not surprise me. What does is that it’s not more wide spread. That hospitals here are not advertising in every newspaper (or electronically) in developed countries about having your baby here in the Good ‘Ole USA and they will be citizens.

    The Libyan Psychodrama
    by John Hayward

The long-awaited Obama address on Libya contained many of the expected points. We knew he would remind us about what a rotten guy Qaddafi is, and the world can always use another hard look at the sins of its monsters.

There was an attempt to explain how it was imperative to “stop Qaddafi’s advance” before his evil spilled beyond the borders of Libya. President Obama offered no theories for why it had not done so during the previous forty years. He also repeated the threadbare talking point that Qaddafi had “lost the confidence of his people,” without suggesting a point during the last four decades when it was his to lose.

The mystic chords of memory were plucked, with encomiums to America’s unique history as a child of revolution, and how “the world’s most powerful nation will always be called upon to help.” We do not hear these luminous hymms when politically inconvenient oppressed people call upon us to help. We have a sacred duty to “prevent genocide,” except for the one in Darfur, or Saddam Hussein’s obliteration of the Marsh Arabs.
Obamao needs serious help and a long rest at “The Funny Farm”.

Palestinian President finds joining al-Qaeda backed Hamas a better way to keep literally keep his head over Palestine than the U.S. money that comes his way to pacify him.

AP: Abbas would give up US aid for Palestinian unity

by Mohammed Daraghmeh, Mar 28, 2011

RAMALLAH, West Bank – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is making a heavy push for reconciliation with Hamas and is willing to give up hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. aid….

“Of course we need the American money. But if they use it as a way of pressuring us, we are ready to relinquish that aid,” said Azzam Ahmed, an Abbas aide.

The U.S. and Israel consider Hamas a terrorist group. The U.S. administration, the largest single donor to the Palestinians, withheld funds when Hamas was a part of a short-lived unity Palestinian government.

… Abbas has made repeated overtures toward Hamas in recent weeks —… Over the weekend, he met with local Hamas officials in the West Bank…

Palestinian analysts say Hamas has hardened its negotiating positions recently and is feeling empowered by the recent upheavals in the Arab world, particularly in Egypt, where its ally, the Muslim Brotherhood, is expected to play a key role in the new regime.

Ayman Hussein, a West Bank Hamas member who recently met Abbas in Ramallah, said Abbas appeared “serious in his efforts” to reach out to Hamas and was pessimistic about the peace process with Israel.

The Palestinians receive more than $470 million a year in direct financial assistance from the U.S. The U.S. hasn’t said what it will do if Hamas returns to power in the West Bank,…

“Palestinian analysts say Hamas has hardened its negotiating positions recently and is feeling empowered by the recent upheavals in the Arab world, particularly in Egypt, where its ally, the Muslim Brotherhood, is expected to play a key role in the new regime.”

The media should separate the U.S. view from Obama’s personal view that Hamas are not a terroist group. He sure used breaks to hold off indicting CAIR, and is turning a blind eye to the World Assembly of Muslim Youth to donate to the Hamas.

Praying for meltdown: The media and the nukes

    By Andrew Orlowski

Sensationalism has always been part of the popular media – but Fukushima is a telling and troubling sign of how much the media has changed in fifty years: from an era of scientific optimism to one where it inhabits a world of fantasy – creating a real-time Hollywood disaster movie with a moralising, chivvying message.

Not so long ago, the professionals showed all the deferential, forelock-tugging paternalism of the dept of “Keep Calm And Carry On”. That era lasted into the 1960s. Now the driving force is the notion that “We’re all DOOMED – and it’s ALL OUR FAULT” that marks almost every news bulletin. Health and environment correspondents will rarely be found debunking the claims they receive in press releases from lobby groups – the drama of catastrophe is too alluring. Fukushima has been the big one.

The Fukushima situation has yet to cause any measurable radiological health effects, and workers at the site were far less hard hit by the quake, tsunami and related events than just about anyone in the disaster zone, but nonetheless the nuclear story rapidly eclipsed the tens of thousands killed directly by the quake. TV’s reaction to the crisis shows how at odds it is with a more rational audience, those who know something about radiation, its consequences, and the human body’s capacity to absorb it and recover from it. The crisis for the media is that thanks to the internet, we can now all bypass these conduits for superstition and stupidity. …

He goes on to detail what we’ve already noticed – how the media has almost universally gone to foes of nuclear energy and green groups for “analysis” of the situation rather than anyone even remotely objective.

He’s wierd looking, has an annoying voice, and a more annoying father…but he keeps saying stuff and proposing stuff that nobody else is willing to say or propose, and it always makes sense and he can always justify it in a sentence or two.

He was slammed unmercifully in the Kentucky election for more than one reason and has emerged stonger for it. It’s kind of rare for politicians to take the blows and come out even stronger after a brutal battle. This guy is something special.

I watched what Rand (almost as bad a name as Mookie) said on toilets in a congressional hearing and had to agree with him – the new toilets don’t work and you gotta flush more than once.

The unintended consequences of such regulations are worse than what they are trying to do.

    • Chase says:

“the new toilets don’t work and you gotta flush more than once.”

And rather than change the regulations already enacted, perhaps we are going to get more advice from a Czar on how to pinch ’em off, or go more frequently….with appointed monitors, fines, and court cases for the trial lawyers…

Perhaps if Michelle’s attempts to put the gov’t in our grocery carts don’t pan out, they will put the intended labor-union foremen in public restrooms….

Reuters Exclusive: Obama authorizes secret support for Libya rebels

    By Mark Hosenball
    Mar 30 2011

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing covert U.S. government support for rebel forces seeking to oust Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, government officials told Reuters on Wednesday.

Obama signed the order, known as a presidential “finding”, within the last two or three weeks, according to four U.S. government sources familiar with the matter.

In 2009 Obama gave a similar authorization for the expansion of covert U.S. counter-terrorism actions by the CIA in Yemen. The White House does not normally confirm such orders have been issued.

The article, by VOA intelligence correspondent Gary Thomas, said covert action “can encompass many things, including propaganda, covert funding, electoral manipulation, arming and training insurgents, and even encouraging a coup.”

(Additional reporting by Susan Cornwell; Editing by David Storey)

We should have guessed when Obama said no boots on the ground and the UN forced him, to expect total different.

Lawmakers say AARP will profit from health care law it lobbied for; take aim at tax exemption

by Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar and Stephen Ohlemacher, Mar 30 2011

WASHINGTON (AP) — AARP lobbied for the new health care law and now it stands to profit, Republican lawmakers charged Wednesday as they called for the IRS to investigate whether the powerful interest group representing older Americans should be stripped of its federal tax exemption.

… They also questioned seven-figure compensation for some AARP executives.

“During this investigation it became very clear that despite its privileged tax-exempt status, in many cases, AARP represents a for-profit entity, in fact, an insurance company,” Boustany said.

… The lawmakers say AARP refused to provide some documentation.

That’s where the new health care law comes in, the report said.

… In 2009, then-CEO William Novelli received $1,647,419 in total compensation, including $350,000 in severance.

Ottawa Citizen: Terror arrest at airport highlights risk of al-Qaida-style radicalization: police

By Stewart Bell, Postmedia News Mar 30, 2011

His flight to Cairo, police said, was only the first leg of a journey to Somalia, where he intended to join Al-Shabab, an al-Qaida-linked armed Islamist extremist group that has been recruiting youths in the West.

While Canadian youths have also allegedly travelled to Pakistan and Afghanistan to participate in terrorism, Al Shabab has been especially effective at recruiting young Canadians over the Internet.
