Dominion to shut Mass. Salem Harbor coal/oil plant

by Scott DiSavino, 18 Nov 2010

Dominion expects to shut the Salem Harbor coal/oil-fired power plant in Massachusetts within seven years as the high cost of keeping up with ever more stringent pollution rules could make it uneconomic to keep operating the plant, a company executive said. With the federal government looking to impose a cost on carbon emissions to combat global warming and environmental regulations becoming increasingly stringent year over year, several power companies, including Exelon Corp, Progress Energy Inc and American Electric Power Co Inc already have announced plans to retire some older, less efficient coal plants.

    * * *

Jon Wellinghoff, chairman of the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, has said the retirement of about 60 gigawatts (60,000 MW) of coal-fired capacity was “very likely within five years” as the EPA moves forward with more stringent emissions standards.

That is about 20 percent of the 300 gigawatts of coal-fired capacity, which mostly run all the time as baseload plants, generating about 45 percent of the nation’s power. * * *

The shutdown of Salem Harbor would hit the city of Salem hard. Last year, the plant, which employs about 145 people, paid about $4.5 million in taxes, making it the biggest taxpayer in the city, according to local news reports.

Here is yet one more example of the Liberal Death Wish in action. Here we see how Liberalism operates to destroy economic prosperity.

Vast industrial resources are being slated for demolition on a nationwide basis. And we see this happening during a period of economic hardship.

Global warming policy is being legislated by means of bureaucratic regulation, instead of by Congress. It is as if the 2010 election never happened.

As a result, electric power will be lost, jobs lost, tax revenues lost and cities pushed into bankruptcy.

Digging a little deeper, we see how investors in municipal bonds and utilities are being harmed –– and these were once considered the safest investments, the support of “widows and orphans.”

This is national suicide, the death by a thousand cuts. All done for the sake of an unproven theory, without any significant, tangible, or measurable benefit.

Shocker. Congressional criminals increase wealth by 16% during most disastrous economy since the Great Depression.

“In contrast, U.S. median household income dropped 3 percent to $50,221 between 2008 and 2009, the second straight decline, according to the Census Dept. In terms of millionaires, only about 1 percent of the overall population qualifies.”

Guess it pays off to be a shrewd investor, no?

Or perhaps it is a just reward for all that hard work of reading bills in the wee hours of the morning and holding all those townhalls to solicit the opinions of the citizens pays off.

Certainly our honest, trustworthy, hard-working, good-intentioned representatives deserve this one-in-a-billion shot to massively increase their personal wealth in the teeth of a category 5 economy.

Sarah Palin Beats Gawker for Now

CBS/ AP — A federal judge on Saturday ordered the website Gawker to pull down unauthorized excerpts from Sarah Palin’s forthcoming book, “America By Heart,” until a hearing scheduled for Nov. 30, reports Politico.

U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Griesa signed a two-page order telling Gawker to take down the excerpts Saturday.

“Gawker is temporarily retrained and enjoined from continuing to distribute, publish or otherwise transmit pages,” said Griesa.

Palin’s Publisher Sues Gawker over Book Excerpts

Palin’s publisher, HarperCollins filed a lawsuit Friday in Federal Court in Manhattan against Gawker Media asking that the company be banned from what it terms “further copyright infringement” and that Gawker deliver the source material to the publisher so it can be destroyed. HarperCollins is also seeking financial damages.

The link to Gawker’s scoop, “Sarah Palin’s New Book: Leaked Excerpts,” is currently broken.

G.H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush on “Larry King.”
    (short clip)
Bush 41 “doesn’t get the Tea Party” (it’s Liberty stupid!!!) and Babs says Sarah Palin should stay in Alaska…………interesting.

    • canary says:

well, Bush may have heard a recently elected politician making statements on FOX that talked like the tea party has become a party to do things, and it was confusing to me too. Barbara said that Sarah is happy in Hawaii and she hopes she stays there, may mean she keeps it her home, as is not run out by the good ole boys & write in who turned coat against Palin, and Larry King laughed, and then it cut out and edited. I’d like to hear what was said next. Then Barbara was known for her pearls and pro-abortion, raising puppies.
Shame on them for going on Larry King in the first place. All big George does is say he’s proud of his sons, never gave George W. advice (hmmm???) and that Jeb would make a good president too. Don’t mean to be age discriminating.

Dubya had his good points, particularly regarding the war on terror, but in other aspects he was a classic rino:

      – unfunded Medicare prescription payments (but at lease he used the free market to hold the cost down)
      – no child left behind
      – amnesty

He was half the problem, and half not.

Even so, about a thousand times better than steroidmarxist Obamy.

  6. David says:

Stop the Presses! Newsweek accidentally accurately reports something!
In an already blasphemous cover piece here, News-weak depicts Obama as Shiva, Hindu god of destruction.
Accurately enough attempting to balance icons representing his current areas of disaster!

PRE-COMMENT. I’d like to comment on the Virginia bill
to create a “Don’t Tread on Me” license plate as seen on
the Drudge Report and propose a “Don’t Touch My Junk”

Suspected major cover-up in the former Detroit Mayor’s stripper who beaten by wife, then later offed in a drive by shooting.

The Detroit News: New witness says there was a Manoogian party

Robert Snell And Mike Martindale Nov 22 2010

Detroit — A second stripper claims the rumored Manoogian Mansion party was real and involved drugs and a fistfight between former first lady Carlita Kilpatrick and exotic dancer Tamara “Strawberry” Greene, according to a federal court filing unsealed Sunday.

The stripper, identified as Tamika Ruffin, dropped the bombshell claim in a civil lawsuit filed by Greene’s family accusing the city and former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick of quashing an investigation into her death.

Ruffin spun a sordid tale. She testified she was offered $1,000 to perform at the Manoogian party for Kilpatrick and friends, attended by about 10 uniformed police officers, and filled with cocaine and marijuana.

Carlita Kilpatrick crashed the party, Ruffin said, storming into the mayoral mansion and interrupting Greene giving Kwame Kilpatrick a lap dance.

…. Carlita Kilpatrick struck Greene with what appeared to be either a “two-by-four,” a “baton” or a “table leg,” according to the filing.

During the fight, Ruffin fled, ducking behind a car parked a few houses away. While hiding, she saw three police cars arrive at the Manoogian.

Greene later stayed at Ruffin’s home for three weeks, during which time Carlita Kilpatrick repeatedly called Greene’s cell phone, threatening her, according to Ruffin’s deposition.

The 5-year-old case has captivated the public with allegations of wrongdoing by a host of local and state government leaders, including Attorney General Mike Cox.

Cox investigated the party but concluded it was urban legend.

Two of Kilpatrick’s bodyguards, Loronzo Jones and Greg Martin, were caught on videotape attending Greene’s funeral.

The Rev. Kenneth Hampton of Grace Bible Church in Detroit gave a copy of the tape to Detroit Police executives, according to the filing.

Hampton gave a deposition in which he said he provided copies of the funeral videotape to then-Assistant Detroit Police Chief Harold Cureton and Lt. Billy Jackson, both of whom oversaw homicide investigators looking into Greene’s death….

Kilpatrick had an extramarital affair with Sheryl Robinson Wood, the former federal monitor overseeing reforms in the Detroit Police Department.

“Incredibly, Kilpatrick testified that he had no recollection of how many times he had sex with Wood, the location of the trysts, or even the year in which they occurred,” Yatooma wrote.

Wood, who was named the federal monitor in 2003, resigned in July 2009 after the FBI discovered text messages — later deemed by a judge as “inappropriate” — between her and Kilpatrick.

…, in 2002, a newly elected Kilpatrick appointed friends to key city posts to watch his back and those same people eventually “turned a blind eye to misconduct occurring within Kilpatrick’s inner circle.”

…., testified people received “multiple, multiple promotions as a result” of hindering the Greene homicide investigation.

And the filing relies on a deposition from fired city emergency medical technician Cenobio Chapa. Chapa claimed he was at Detroit Receiving Hospital in the fall 2002 when an injured woman showed up for treatment. The woman claimed to have been assaulted by Carlita Kilpatrick, he said.

The civil lawsuit accuses Detroit and Kilpatrick of quashing an investigation into Greene’s death in 2003. Greene, 27, was killed in a drive-by shooting several months after she was linked to the rumored but never proven party at the mayor’s mansion in fall 2002.

Bernard Kilpatrick refused to address whether he talked about the party and rumored assault with his son or whether his son admitted covering up the assault and Greene’s death.

Health Check: The boy who was raised a girl
Nov 23rd 2010But what happens if you bring up someone who was a boy as a girl?

…Yet what David did not know was that he had still been immortalised as ‘John/Jane’ in medical and academic papers about gender reassignment, and that the “success” of Dr Money’s theory was affecting other patients with similar gender issues.

“He had no way of knowing that his case had found its way into a wide array of medical and psychological textbooks that were now establishing the protocols for how to treat hermaphrodites and people who lose their penis,” said John Colapinto, a journalist for the New York Times who uncovered David’s story.

“He could hardly believe that this was out there as a successful case and that it was affecting others like him.”…

Sad story. Like life isn’t complicated enough for children without telling them to figure out which sex, or both sexes they identify with, prefer.

Well well…so now Tom Delay is guilty of what? If you don’t hate the democrat socialist left by now…this will really honk you off.

Rangel gets a slap? Waters gets to skate? Pelosi gets a pass? Why in the holy hell is Delay so important to the socialists that they trump up these charges…load the jury with democrat sympathizers…with a socialist judge….a leftist prosecutor….and he isn’t even in public service anymore?

I hope to hell that Darrel Issa gets the message and literally destroys the careers of the fifty plus DEMOCRAT members of congress who are being investigated for actual criminal activity.

    I hate these effing pigs….

4 arrested in Afghanistan election fraud.

AP: Election flap heats up in Afghanistan

26 Nov 2010 By Deb Riechmann

The Afghan attorney general’s office has announced four arrests in its investigation of fraud during the controversial September parliamentary election. It is a move some Western officials fear is part of efforts by the political elite to overturn the results of certain races.

Deputy Attorney General Rahmatullah Nazari told reporters that two employees of Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission and two people working in the money transfer business had been arrested and that an arrest warrant had been issued for a third commission employee.

The election flap, heating up just ahead of President Barack Obama’s December Afghan review, comes at a time when NATO and its allies need President Hamid Karzai’s government to be seen as a strong partner in the war.

The international community views the election as a test of his commitment to reforming his corruption-ridden government since he was re-elected last year in a vote that was itself heavily tainted by fraud. The allegations last year nearly undermined the legitimacy of Karzai’s government and pushed some NATO countries to threaten to pull troops and aid.

Releasing the final results now irked Attorney General Mohammad Ishaq Alako, who claimed election officials should have waited until prosecutors finished investigating criminal allegations of ballot manipulation. Alako claimed earlier this week that money from well-connected Afghans, many of whom bank their riches in Dubai, heavily influenced the election results.

The prospect of the Supreme Court hearing election cases has raised speculation among Western diplomats who allege that Karzai or his advisers are behind the attorney general’s investigation and would pressure the Supreme Court to rule in favour of candidates backed by the palace.

However, Candace Rondeaux, senior analyst in Kabul for the International Crisis Group, noted that the attorney general had intervened on Karzai’s behalf in the past. The group is an independent, non-profit organisation that works to prevent and resolve deadly conflict.

“This is not the first time that we have seen Karzai use the Supreme Court as his bully pulpit and the attorney general as his whipping boy,” Rondeaux said in an interview. “This is a very serious crisis we are entering because there is no way that members of parliament who are contesting this election will sit still for this kind of abuse of power. We have seen demonstrations across the country. The game is not over yet.”

In a statement, Karzai urged losing candidates not to resort to violent protests, but to submit their complaints to the appropriate authorities so that they can be properly investigated. The brief statement also said that the president was respecting the constitution and “will act accordingly”.

“One important person who has a role in this case has not yet been arrested,” he said. “The person not yet arrested is an IEC employee – high-ranking – one who is making decisions.”

Nazari also displayed papers naming candidates and people in the money transfer business, which he said proved that bribes were involved.

He declined to name those arrested.

Dan McNorton, a UN spokesman in Kabul, said he was aware of reports that a UN-affiliated election worker had been targeted in the attorney general’s case. He said he was looking into the matter.

Turkey media says Obama out of touch & wasteful in naming Turkey a model Muslim state

’Israel can’t rely on Turkey or NATO for its defense,’ expert says

    ISTANBUL – Hürriyet Daily News
    Nov 24, 2010

Ariel Cohen, from Washington think tank The Heritage Foundation, criticized what he called the Turkish leadership’s adamant position on not letting any data collected by a planned NATO missile defense system radar be shared with Israel.

“This position suggests an ill intention against the security of Israel,” he told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review during a Tuesday interview.

…Turkey’s refusal to let United States soldiers use Turkish territory to enter Iraq in 2003, as well as its refusal to let U.S. warships enter the Black Sea, the offer of the Turkish-Russian platform which excluded the European Union and the U.S. during the Russian-Georgian war in 2008 and more recently the Turkish-Brazilian initiative on the nuclear standoff between Iran and the West, …

…, Turkey would be unlikely to find a more sympathetic U.S. government than the Obama administration, Cohen said. “Any government in the future will be tougher.”

“Obama has spent tremendous political capital by coming to Turkey in the early days of his administration, to highlight Turkey as a model of a democratic Muslim state. But he was thinking of the Turkey of eight years ago….,” he said.
