Wellesley professor unearths a horror: Syphilis experiments in Guatemala

    by Stephen Smith
    October 2, 2010

Picking through musty files in a Pennsylvania archive, a Wellesley College professor made a heart-stopping discovery: US government scientists in the 1940s deliberately infected hundreds of Guatemalans with syphilis and gonorrhea in experiments conducted without the subjects’ permission.

Medical historian Susan M. Reverby happened upon the documents four or five years ago while researching the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study and later shared her findings with US government officials.

The unethical research was not publicly disclosed until yesterday, when President Obama and two Cabinet secretaries apologized to Guatemala’s government and people and pledged to never repeat the mistakes of the past — an era when it was not uncommon for doctors to experiment on patients without their consent. …

In Guatemala, prisoners, soldiers, and inmates in mental asylums were willfully infected, sometimes by using prostitutes provided by the scientists, sometimes by pouring the germs onto skin abrasions the researchers caused.

The US scientists — who had received the blessings of Guatemalan health authorities — were among the leading lights in the field of sexually transmitted disease research. … From 1946 to 1948, they tested their theories on about 1,500 Guatemalans; most who became infected received treatment, but at least one died.

Harry S. Truman (D) was President of the United States.

Yesterday, Obama called President Álvaro Colom Caballeros of Guatemala to apologize, and Obama’s spokesman told reporters the experiment was “tragic, and the United States by all means apologizes to all those who were impacted by this.’’ …

Good. Now it’s Il Presidente Caballeros’ turn to apologize.

The US government has asked the Institute of Medicine, an independent agency that conducts health investigations for Congress, to conduct a review of the experiments. Separately, a presidential bioethics commission will charter an international panel of specialists to explore the current state of medical research on humans around the world and ensure that the atrocities of the past cannot recur.

Good. And when they’re done, perhaps the IOM can explore the bioethics of Obamacare.

Any decision about making reparations — financial or otherwise — will await the outcome of the two study panels, officials said.

A representative of the Guatemalan government said his nation will investigate, too — looking in part at the culpability of officials in that country. The records of the experiment suggest that Guatemalan government officials were fully aware of the tests, sanctioned them, and may have done so in exchange for stockpiles of penicillin.

Il Presidente Caballeros better start saving his reparation quetzals.

Reverby said she did not publicize her findings sooner because no one was in immediate danger and because, unlike Tuskegee, most of the subjects were treated. “It’s not like I could have stopped something that was happening now,’’ she said.

According to the article, Reverby uncovered the Mengele-like experiments 4-5 years ago but didn’t come forth because she needed to write her book, “Examining Tuskegee.”

Looks like Reverby owes an apology too. Hope she’s got reparation money.

The researchers wanted to know whether penicillin could prevent — not just cure — syphilis. They also hoped their experiments would lead to better blood tests and dosing strategies for antibiotics. …

But the fascination with the Guatemalan experiment was fleeting, in no small part because the results were unimpressive. …

Two years after the experiment began, it was ended. The final report was secreted away in Cutler’s papers — along with photos taken by his wife, herself a Wellesley alumna.

CNN Fires Rick Sanchez for Remarks in Interview

    by Brian Stelter
    October 1, 2010

Rick Sanchez, a daytime anchor at CNN, was fired on Friday, a day after telling a radio interviewer that Jon Stewart was a bigot and that “everybody that runs CNN is a lot like Stewart.” …

CNN said in a statement Friday evening, “Rick Sanchez is no longer with the company. We thank Rick for his years of service and we wish him well.” …

In the conversation Mr. Sanchez, who is Cuban-American, repeatedly suggested that he had experienced subtle forms of discrimination in his television career. …

One of the co-hosts of the radio show brought up the fact that Mr. Stewart was a Jew, saying to Mr. Sanchez that he was a minority “as much as you are.”

Mr. Sanchez answered sarcastically, “Yeah. Yeah. Very powerless people.” He let out a high-pitched laugh.

“Everybody that runs CNN is a lot like Stewart,” Mr. Sanchez said. “And a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart. And to imply that somehow they — the people in this country who are Jewish — are an oppressed minority? Yeah.”

Mr. Stewart has made jokes about Mr. Sanchez more than 20 times in the last five years, according to a search of the show’s Web site. Or as Mr. Sanchez put it, “You watch yourself on his show every day and all they ever do is call you stupid.” …

    Good clean fun.

    More science news.

Alliant Techsystems, a Minnesota-based aerospace and defense contractor, is laying off 426 employees in Utah, Huntsville AL, and at Kennedy Space Center in Florida as NASA’s shuttle program and the Ares rocket program grind to a halt. Most of the employees are engaged in R&D.

No doubt NASA’s new Muslim outreach programs will proceed at full throttle. Blessings of the Prophet be upon them.

“Humana, Wal-Mart unveil low-cost Medicare drug plan”

by Lewis Krauskopf, 1 Oct 2010

The two companies Liberals most love to hate, “health insurer Humana Inc and Wal-Mart Stores Inc will team up to offer a U.S. Medicare prescription drug coverage plan next year that will have the lowest premiums in the country….”

“The Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan will cost $14.80 per month in premiums for prescription drug coverage…. The monthly premium is less than half the average premium for Medicare prescription drug plans this year, the companies said.”

    * * *

“[Humana Vice Pres. William] Fleming said the company was targeting a 5 percent pretax operating margin for the Humana-Walmart plan….”

Five percent pre-tax sounds like obscene profits to me. Somebody tell Sebelius to grab her billy club.

    • proreason says:

fyi, the premium on those plan is only one component of the price. Generally, the lower the premium, the higher the price of the drugs.

It will be interesting to see whether Walmart’s buying power can lower the OVERALL cost of the program.

If that happens, it will be further validation that the free market is making Bush’s prescription relief program more cost effective than any other government medical program ever.

(note: the conservative case against the program is that it is one more unfunded government giveaway. The fact that it is more efficient than other giveaway programs doesn’t mitigate that problem.)

    • Petronius says:

“Generally , the lower the premium, the higher the price of the drugs.”

Yes, of course the devil is in the details, but in this case the details look pretty good.

The co-pay on generics filled at Wal-Mart is as low as $2.00, and there’s no co-pay for prescriptions on generics filled via Humana’s mail delivery service.

      Hard to beat that.

Desperation drives abused Afghan women to suicide by fire
    By Agence France Presse (AFP)

    October 04, 2010 Lynne O’Donnell

HERAT, Afghanistan: In the refined, cultured and historic Afghan city of Herat, 67 young women have been admitted to the main hospital this year after setting themselves on fire.

Halima is the most recent. She arrived earlier this month with third-degree burns to 30 percent of her body after dousing herself in diesel oil and setting it alight during a family argument.

It had been a furious row, she said, with her husband’s first wife, whom she accused of supplying him with opium.

“I was crazy angry at that time. I wanted to kill myself and I thought that it would be a quick death,” said the 20-year-old who has been a second wife for five years. “But it wasn’t.” As shocking and gruesome as the practice is, self-immolation is not unusual among young women in Afghanistan, where women are often seen and treated as the property of men.

Some experts, such as Dibi Hareer of the small German-based charity Medicale Mondiale, say the phenomenon is growing, the reasons embedded in “Afghan customs and traditions that are stronger than laws.”

Jalali has set up a research foundation called Nejat, meaning rescue in Dari, which he hopes will gather enough information to be able to help put a stop to what he calls a “horrifying trend.”

Afghanistan’s lack of social development is blamed for the way women are treated, with much of the horror attributed to tradition and religion.

Despite the introduction of constitutional rights after the Taliban’s brutal hardline Islamist regime was overthrown in late 2001, Afghanistan remains a society mired in misogyny, with most women confined to their homes, unsocialized and uneducated.

“Forced marriages lead to problems, young women married to old men, sold, swapped for sheep or even opium. Sometimes girls are engaged as babies to baby boys – this is common outside the cities and it leads to some of the problems of the women who come in here,” Jalali said. …

“They feel more pressure from their abusive husbands and equally from women, mainly mothers-in-law. They sometimes go to mullahs and community councils to ask for help, but even there they face humiliation and abuse,” he said.

“They finally set themselves on fire in an act of utter desperation.”

In an effort at least to draw attention to the issue, Afghanistan’s public Health Ministry has declared October 10 Self-Immolation Day…”

For Jalali, education is the key to change. “No forced marriages,” he said emphatically. …

Dad: Mexican police failing in pirate attack probe

    by Ivan Moreno
    October 5, 2010

DENVER — The father of an American man who was allegedly killed by pirates in a lake on the Texas-Mexico border accused Mexican authorities of being corrupt and said Tuesday they’re not doing enough to find his son’s body. …

Tiffany Hartley said she and her husband, David, were on Jet Skis on Falcon Lake on Thursday when men on three speedboats chased them, shooting her husband in the head. Authorities have not recovered his body, but Tiffany Hartley said she believes the gun shot was fatal.

Rolando Armando Flores Villegas, the Tamaulipas State Police commander overseeing the search for David Hartley, told the McAllen (Texas) Monitor on Monday that no one near the lake reported hearing gunshots or the sound of anyone on a Jet Ski. …

Tiffany Hartley recounted the incident on NBC’s “Today” show Tuesday, describing how she saw bullets hitting the water near her and her husband flying over his Jet Ski. She became emotional as she described going to her husband to try to help.

“I had to turn him over because he was face down in the water and turned him over, and he was shot in the head,” she said, adding that she tried to pull her husband onto her Jet Ski but couldn’t, and that a man on one of the boats pointed his gun at her. “I couldn’t get him up, and I just kept hearing God tell me, ‘You have to go, you have to go.’ So I had to leave him so I could get to safety.” …

The shooting happened near the U.S. boundary of the lake, which is about 60 miles down the border from Laredo. Authorities said several fishermen were robbed at gunpoint earlier this year on the Mexican side of the lake but no one was hurt. …

HUD offers help to struggling Va homeowners

    October 5, 2010; 12:10 PM EDT

RICHMOND, VA. — The federal government is offering emergency loans to homeowners in Virginia who face foreclosure because they’ve lost income due to a job loss, underemployment or a medical condition.

Zero percent interest loans for up to $50,000 are available through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Emergency Homeowners Loan Program to help homeowners with mortgage costs.

The agency said Tuesday that a borrower must be at least three months delinquent in mortgage payments and have lost at least 15 percent of their income to be eligible for a loan.

A borrower also must have been able to afford their mortgage payment before their income was reduced.

Borrowers who own a second home aren’t eligible.

    • Petronius says:

Nerobama really is a johnny one-note. The only tune he can play is “The Redistribution Blues.”

In this case people are literally being paid to borrow money, because anything they repay in the future (if ever) will be in inflated dollars.

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

This is patently absurd. I used to be a huge fan of the VA home loan program. But here you have the qualifications to get a loan, basically saying, you are already cash-strapped and most likely unable to even pay it back. Sure, that’s always when you need money the most but to borrow it is foolhardy and worse, to lend it with the expectation to get any of it back, is insane.

The old joke used to be, “In order to get a loan, you must first provide proof that you don’t need it.”.

And, the vast majority of mortgage lending was profitable. Now it’s throw good money after bad, then repeat. Unreal.

Three Iowa judges may face voters’ retaliation

    by Grant Schulte
    October 5, 2010

DES MOINES — Three Iowa Supreme Court justices who were part of a unanimous decision last year to allow same-sex marriage may pay the price next month as voters decide whether to keep them on the bench. A Des Moines Register Iowa Poll released Monday shows that 44% of Iowans who plan to vote in the retention election say they will vote “yes” to all three justices; 40% say they will vote to remove all three; and 16% say they want to retain some.

Scholars who study judge-selection practices said the removal of even one justice would shock judiciaries across the nation, embolden conservative activists and could open the door to changes in the way Iowa chooses judges.

“Those poll numbers are stunning,” said Brian Fitzpatrick, a Vanderbilt University associate law professor who has followed Iowa’s retention debate. “It is virtually unheard of for a judge to lose a retention race.”

No Iowa Supreme Court justice has lost a seat since the state adopted a merit-selection and retention system in 1962.

The justices have won retention with an average 75% support since 1998. …

The Iowa Poll results come more than a year after a unanimous Iowa Supreme Court decision that overturned the state’s one-man, one-woman marriage law and allowed same-sex couples to wed.

    Alcohol marketers link to ‘pink’
But groups say drinking is a contributor to cancer

    by Liz Szabo
    October 5, 2010

Consumers who want to support breast cancer research through shopping can choose from pink T-shirts, lip gloss and, increasingly, booze.

Mike’s Hard Lemonade now comes in a pink variety. Pink wines sport pink ribbons. And Chambord, which markets pink vodka and liqueurs, urges people to “pink their drink,” saying that “by adding a splash of Chambord to any cocktail, you’re supporting breast cancer awareness year-round.”

All of them have given money to breast cancer causes — and highlight the donations in their ads.

That has led to criticism by some breast cancer survivors, who say it’s hypocritical to raise money for research while selling a product that contributes to the disease. …

“Anybody trying to sell alcohol to promote breast cancer awareness should be ashamed of themselves,” says Barbara Brenner, executive director of Breast Cancer Action, an advocacy group. …

At least one breast cancer charity is walking away from alcohol-related gifts. “We have a partnership with alcohol, and I don’t understand it, either,” says Cindy Geoghegan, the new interim CEO at Breast Cancer Network for Strength. “Those kinds of relationships will not continue.”

Sure. Put your money where your bra was lady.

And though the Breast Cancer Research Foundation appreciates donations from Mike’s Hard Lemonade, spokeswoman Anna DeLuca says, the group “in no way, shape or form endorses the consumption of alcohol.”

“This donation does not constitute a partnership,” DeLuca says.

See? Money changes everything. So let’s get drunk and vote 4 pink!

    From the WSJ

Democrats Look to Cultivate Pot Vote in 2012
Party Considers Legalization Efforts in Swing States Amid Signs California Measure Is Exciting Young, Liberal Voters

Democratic strategists are studying a California marijuana-legalization initiative to see if similar ballot measures could energize young, liberal voters in swing states for the 2012 presidential election.

Some pollsters and party officials say Democratic candidates in California are benefiting from a surge in enthusiasm among young voters eager to back Proposition 19, which would legalize marijuana in certain quantities and permit local governments to regulate and tax it.

Party strategists and marijuana-legalization advocates are discussing whether to push for similar ballot questions in 2012 in Colorado and Nevada—both expected to be crucial to President Barack Obama’s re-election—and Washington state, which will have races for governor and seats in both houses of Congress.

Already, a coalition of Democratic-leaning groups has conducted a poll in Colorado and Washington to test the power of marijuana measures to drive voter turnout.

Ballot measures typically don’t increase turnout on a mass scale. Still, strategists in both parties argue certain ballot measures can help activate targeted groups of voters and campaign volunteers in numbers that can be significant in close elections.

So, yes, if you can’t get ALL the illegal immigrants, get your poll numbers up by courting drug-users. My god, the blinds are really up in this house, aren’t they? No temerity whatsoever, eh? Whistling past the graveyard, tugging on Superman’s cape.

Michelle Obama: The most powerful woman in the Forbes universe

    Here’s to the feminine power.

Not only did we find out today that women are outpacing men in earning six-figure incomes, but Forbes released its annual Power Women list.

That name has always sounded vaguely workout-video-esque, but the list is an interesting overview on the leading women of the world.

This year, Michelle Obama knocked out Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel. Forbes wrote, “She’s Jackie Kennedy with a law degree from Harvard and street sense from Chicago’s South Side.”

It probably helps your influence level to have as your husband the leader of the U.S., but the magazine also gives her points for her effective Let’s Move! campaign and her work with military families.

Merkel dropped down to No. 4 this year after a contentious year in German politics. Irene Rosenfeld, chief executive of Kraft Food, and Oprah Winfrey come in at No. 2 and 3, respectively.

Forbes announced the list had a different rating system this year, based “less on traditional titles and roles and more on creative influence and entrepreneurship,” which might explain why Lady Gaga wound up in the top 10. Her fashion influence is well known, but her influence did not extend to Congress, which did not follow her tweeted missives to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law.

Check out the whole list here.

Some Democrats are certainly hoping that Obama is as powerful as Forbes says she is, seeing as they’ve pinned their reelection hopes to her well-heeled star.

For what?!? Showing us that grown women still look stupid when shoved into their daughters clothes? Or, when you don’t have a waist, wearing a belt with everything to give the illusion of a waist only succeeds in making your already large ass even larger? October 07, 2010|By Michael A. Memoli, Tribune Washington Bureau

Reporting from Washington — A Republican majority in Congress would mean “hand-to-hand combat” on Capitol Hill for the next two years, threatening policies Democrats have enacted to stabilize the economy, President Obama warned Wednesday.

Speaking on Michael Baisden’s syndicated radio show, Obama also made a direct appeal to African Americans…

“The reason we won [in 2008] is because young people, African Americans, Latinos — people who traditionally don’t vote in high numbers — voted in record numbers. We’ve got to have that same kind of turnout in this election,” he said….

“Everybody in the barbershops, the beauty shops, and at work — everybody’s got to understand: This is a huge election,” he said. “If we turn out in strong numbers, then we will do fine. If we do not, if we are depressed and decide, well, you know, Barack’s not running right now, so I’m just going to stay home, then I’m going to have my hands full up here on Capitol Hill.”

“They are fired up. They are mobilized. They see an opportunity to take back the House, maybe take back the Senate,” he said. “If they’re successful in doing that, they’ve already said they’re going to go back to the same policies that were in place during the Bush administration. That means that we are going to have just hand-to-hand combat up here on Capitol Hill.”

Mental exam for Hood suspect blocked by lawyer

FORT WORTH, Texas — A defense attorney on Thursday blocked a mental evaluation for the Army psychiatrist accused in last year’s shooting rampage at Fort Hood, saying it should not be conducted before a hearing to determine whether his client will stand trial.

The panel must determine whether Hasan is competent to stand trial, and also will determine Hasan’s mental status the day of the Nov. 5 shooting that left 13 dead and nearly three dozen wounded on the Texas Army post.

Galligan said after he gave the panel his objections, they went inside the jail to see Hasan, who signed a document that said: “I do not wish to voluntarily participate in this exam under the current conditions and time frame.” The panel signed the document and left, Galligan said.

Col. Morgan Lamb, a Fort Hood brigade commander appointed to oversee judicial matters in Hasan’s case, on Monday ordered that the evaluation be done before next week’s Article 32 hearing.

At the Article 32 hearing, expected to last several weeks, the injured victims will testify about what happened that day.

The father of a Marine killed in Iraq is asking the Supreme Court to reinstate a $5 million verdict against members of a fundamentalist church who picketed his son’s funeral with signs like “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” and “God Hates the USA.”

Here is the first (and most important) money quote:
Snyder won an $11 million verdict against the church for intentional infliction of emotional distress, among other claims.

And here is why it is in front of the Supreme Court:
A judge reduced the award to $5 million before the federal appeals court in Richmond, Va., threw out the verdict altogether, citing the church’s First Amendment rights.

So a lower court Judge (isn’t that called Judicial Activism) threw out the verdict on the grounds of a ‘right’ that 1) isn’t part of the original case and verdict and 2) As this was not Congress involved at all at any point in this case – not an issue at all, as the 1st Amendment states: Congress shall make no law. . .nor abridging the freedom of speech. . .

I uphold and defend the right to free speech – but nowhere in the First Amendment does it say that there cannot nor should not be any limits at all, ever on speech – So let me make this a little more simple to get people to understand what I am saying.

Change WBC signs to God Hates Muslims – or put WBC in front of Bravo TV with those exact same signs – Would the Left/Liberals or anyone – be defending them so greatly? Look at the Pastor in the church in FL who was dissuaded from an event (free speech) on his own church property – where were his free speech rights?

If it does not apply to everyone equally – it is no longer a ‘right’ but a privilege and that is what we are allowing to happen in America – but, most importantly this case is not about the First Amendment at all and I hope that the Supreme Court can see that.

Interesting note on this: The Army Times has a story on this case and I found this gem:

Church followers separately posted on the Web a video “epic” about their protests titled The Burden of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder. The video said Albert Snyder and his ex-wife had “taught Matthew to defy his creator” and “raised him for the devil.”

However after soiling myself at their website, I could not find that ‘epic’ video.

I also saw this lie: In 1991, WBC began conducting peaceful demonstrations opposing the fag lifestyle of soul-damning, nation-destroying filth.

In response, america bombed WBC – [A]merica bombed WBC!?!?

No wonder the liberals are defending these scums – they are them – liars.
