Senate Kills Push For 6,000 Border Troops

From the Washington Times:

Senate says no to 6,000 border troops

By Stephen Dinan

May 28, 2010

Senate Democrats managed Thursday to block deployment of 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, but the proposal still garnered a majority of senators, showing widespread support for a border-security-first strategy and underscoring why President Obama is having difficulty trying to win an immigration-legalization bill.

The vote flustered Democrats, who seemed uncertain how to handle the proposal and were reluctant to defy Mr. Obama, who just this week proposed that a much smaller 1,200-troop force be deployed.

Mr. Obama pretends to want National Guard troops on the border. Why would giving him even more than he requested be seen as defiance? Unless he really didn’t want any of them there in the first place.

Of course Mr. Obama pretends to be concerned about the cost. But it’s only when it comes to defending America that he ever worries about the price tag.

In the end, 12 Democrats joined 39 Republicans in voting for the deployment – though that still fell nine votes shy of the 60-vote supermajority needed for passage

With Democrats holding a giant advantage in the Senate, Republicans were never likely to garner the 60 votes needed to pass the National Guard amendment.

Doesn’t America deserve a straight ‘up or down’ vote on putting National Guard troops on our border? (That’s what we heard about ‘healthcare reform.’)

We suspect most Americans would favor sending twice of five times this number.

Still, notice that once again the only bi-partisanship here is bi-partisanship opposition to Mr. Obama.

He could have BP pay for it. Got to keep that boot on their neck.

Oh that’s right, now he’s claiming he never said that. I guess that was supposed to be a comment made in private to show how tough he is.
