Senate Renews Patriot Act 95-4 – Despite Dems

Gosh, it seems like only yesterday so many were dead set against ever renewing the Patriot Act.

From the French terrorist enablers at AFP:

Senate approves revised ‘Patriot Act’ anti-terror laws

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The US Senate overwhelmingly approved a revised version of the sweeping anti-terrorism Patriot Act law passed by Congress following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

With an expiration date looming later this month, the Senate, by a vote of 95 to four, passed what they said was an improved and updated version of the bill — one that also addressed the civil liberties concerns expressed by several senators.

The bill, a compromise between House and Senate negotiators, took weeks to hammer out, after several lawmakers — including a handful of senators from US President George W. Bush’s Republican party — expressed reservations about expanded government search and surveillance powers in the legislation.

Those concerns, they said, have been addressed in the legislation approved Wednesday.

The original Patriot Act passed just five weeks after the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.

Automatic "sunset" provisions meant the legislation, which had already been extended twice, would have expired without new congressional action.

I guess despite the deluge of lies from our one party media to the contrary, the Senators realize the American public wants the Patriot Act kept in place.

Not that it matters to some, such as these Solons who voted against re-authorization:

Byrd (D-WV)
Feingold (D-WI)
Harkin (D-IA)
Jeffords (I-VT)

(Senator Inouye (D-HI) did not cast a vote.)

But wasn’t it only yesterday (okday, it’s been a couple months) when we heard the top Democrat in the nation crowing about how he had defeated the Patriot Act for good and for all?

From Fox News Sunday:

Transcript: Sen. Harry Reid on ‘FNS’

Sunday, December 18, 2005

WALLACE: All right. Change of subject. You voted this week to block renewal of the Patriot Act, and as we mentioned with Secretary of State Rice, key provisions of that act are due to expire by the end of the year.

After the vote on Friday, you talked at a Democratic Party meeting, and let’s take a look at what you had to say.

REID: Think of what happened 20 minutes ago in the United States Senate. We killed the Patriot Act.

WALLACE: Senator, is that really something to celebrate?

REID: Of course it is.

Sic transit gloria mundi, I guess.

Of course this vote will be buried on page 43, Section D, after the obits.

(Thanks to Esthier for the memory jog.)
