Sherriff Joe Vows To Stop Wasteful Spending

From a seemingly irony proof CNN, via their Money.Com site:

White House: We’re fighting wasteful spending

WASHINGTON (CNNMoney) — The Obama administration said Wednesday that federal agencies will save taxpayers billions of dollars by cracking down on waste and fraud.

"If we’re going to spur jobs and economic growth and restore long-term fiscal solvency, we need to make sure hard-earned tax dollars don’t go to waste," said Vice President Joseph Biden in a statement.

The main effort that could deliver big dollar savings is going on at Health and Human Services, which plans to use a special audit program to root out waste and fraud in Medicaid. Agency auditors say they expect to recover $2.1 billion over five years

As we noted back in July, the system put in place to audit Medicare/Medicaid fraud was completely inadequate. It didn’t even audit Medicaid.

So maybe they are finally getting that program up to speed.

This year, the existing auditing program over at Medicare recovered $670 million from overpayments or fraudulent payments, according to the White House.

Which sounds great, until you learn that that there are between $60 billion to $90 billion dollars wasted on fraudulent claims each year.

The vice president is also touting efforts to crack down on payments of unemployment benefits to people who shouldn’t be getting them.

Is he trying to kill the ‘Obama recovery’? We all know that unemployment benefits do more to stimulate the economy than anything else.

Who cares if people deserve them or not? (And, really, after 99 weeks, that is a fine distinction, anyway.)

The Department of Labor is focusing on six states where fraud in unemployment benefits is particularly bad: Virginia, Indiana, Colorado, Washington, Louisiana, and Arizona. Improper payments of unemployment benefits have run as high as 43% of dollars distributed in Louisiana and Indiana.

So almost half of the unemployment dollars doled out in those two states was "improper"? In other words, nearly half of all of the unemployment benefits doled out in those two states was "improper"?

Shouldn’t this be headline news? Or is this kind of rampant corruption the new norm under Obama?

And how did ‘Sherriff Joe’ let this happen? After all, jobless benefits are being paid for with stimulus money. And Biden is in charge to overseeing that. And ‘nobody messes with Joe.’

Those six states will have to undergo stricter reviews until they can get their error rate below 10% of dollars doled out for six months straight, according to the Department of Labor.

That will show them.

Apparently, Mr. Biden didn’t have anything to say about the suspected fraud in the ‘green jobs’ stimulus loans. Why is that?

A story of two “Sheriff Joes”.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County Sherrif, Arizona.

“Sherrif” Joe Biden. vice-president, US of A.

    No further comments necessary.

I’m actually a little worried about this. The “Easy” way to crack down on “Waste Fraud and Abuse” is to simply deny payment on any claim that has even the slightest deviation from normal, or to pull X% of claims out at random and deny claims on them, then to allow an “Appeals” process, which has a 100% rejection rate.

If there is $60-90 billion in Medicare/Medicaid fraud just image how much there is in Social Security payments, something I rarely hear about.

But I don’t understand why the Keynesian economic fanatics in this adminsitration care. To them this is just $60-90 billion in stimulus spending. My guess is they don’t and this is just window dressing to fool the rubes.

    Here’s an idea.

Medicaid (the welfare program, not the health care program for Senior Citizens) is a great program right? Fat cat billionaires like Warren Buffet are desperate to pay more taxes right? Isn’t that a match made in heaven?

Immediately, congress should pass a bill that removes federal funding for Medicaid and hands that aspect over entirely to a new voluntary funding group called “Billionaires for Medicaid”. Warren Buffet can lead the group because he is such a big complainer about being under-taxed. Obviously, government must remain responsible for the benefit payments because we couldn’t trust billionaires with something that important. The billionaires might try to restrict the growth of the important program to something less than 11% p.a.

That should put Medicaid on rock solid financial footing, improve the deficit outlook, and provide a mechanism for patriotic billionaires to voluntarily pay their fair share.

Sheriff Joe (Bullshiite) Biden……..just another flea biting on America’s ass.

  6. Chase says:

It sounds good, nice political moment for Joe, perhaps even a safe one where he won’t shoot anyone, or himself, in the foot…..but, it will never be tracked, nothing will come of it, and any accounting and recoveries will be suspect, aggrandized, or more will be spent in the recovery than what is recovered. That’s how it works in the hope and change world of transparent and honest government brought to you by Chicago’s Power and Light (-fingered) Company….
