Shinseki Won’t Resign, Report Will Take 3 More Weeks

From the Politico:

Eric Shinseki ‘mad as hell’ over VA scandal

By JEREMY HERB and AUSTIN WRIGHT | May 15, 2014

Fighting for his political life, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki declared on Thursday he’s “mad as hell” over allegations at the center of an unfolding scandal related to treatment delays at veterans hospitals…

“I’m committed to take all actions necessary to identify exactly what the issues are, to fix them and to strengthen veterans’ trust in VA health care,” [Shinseki told the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee]. “If any allegations are substantiated by the inspector general, we will act.” …

How long does it take to substantiate allegations? The allegations have been known for more than a year.

Shinseki faced a barrage of questions from several Republican senators on the committee who have called for his resignation, as well as from Democrats who suggested he needed to shake up his management team.

Note that the Democrats don’t want Shinseki to resign. They want him to be the face of this scandal. They don’t want Obama to be blamed. After all, the ‘buck always stops somewhere else’ with Obama.

By the way, would it be too cynical to note that the MSM only have taken up the VA scandal after some Democrats have decided to express their (faux) outrage at it? And only after they have a found scapegoat to take the hits, instead of Obama?

Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) asked him bluntly: “Can you explain to me, after knowing all this information, why you should not resign?” Responding, Shinseki said he had come to the VA to make things better for veterans and didn’t plan to step down. “I intend to continue this mission until we’ve satisfied either that goal, or I’m told by the commander in chief that my time has been served,” he said.

Why didn’t Shinseki just throw up his hands and screech, ‘What difference does it make now?’ That always works for Hillary. Or, if he wanted to go the other Obama administration route, he could just stonewall and take The Fifth.

In his opening remarks, Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) cautioned against “a rush to judgment,” but he acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations…

Socialists and other Democrats never rush to judgment.

He also defended the VA’s overall record, saying that while the agency certainly has problems, most veterans are still receiving good care. “It is not the case that the rest of health care in America is just wonderful,” he said…

The VA system is an abomination. And the sad thing is, Obama wants to give the rest of us the same kind of treatment, via single payer.

Ahead of the hearing, President Barack Obama — who has stood by Shinseki during previous calls for him to resign — directed White House deputy chief of staff Rob Nabors to oversee a review of the VA, particularly its policies for scheduling appointments as well as patient safety rules…

Why didn’t he create a blue ribbon panel? Then we would know that he is really serious about this problem.

Meanwhile, we have this from the Associated Press:

Shinseki: Report on VA due within 3 weeks

By MATTHEW DALY | May 15, 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing calls to resign, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki said Thursday that he hopes to have a preliminary report within three weeks on how widespread treatment delays and falsified patient scheduling reports are at VA facilities nationwide, following allegations that up to 40 veterans may have died while awaiting treatment at the Phoenix VA center…

Three weeks? How long does it take to destroy all the records? Do they need more paper shredders?

Shinseki resisted calls from a Democratic senator to bring in the Justice Department and FBI for a criminal investigation…

Don’t worry, Mr. Holder has already announced that he has no plans to get the DOJ involved. They are too busy monitoring GOP primaries around the country for voter fraud.
