Shocker: Berkeley Protest Turns Violent

From a cheering Associated Press:

Late-night protest at UC Berkeley turns violent

By Terence Chea, Associated Press Writer Fri Feb 26

BERKELEY, Calif. – A late-night demonstration over budget cuts turned violent in Berkeley when protesters broke into a campus building, torched trash cans, smashed windows and threw rocks and bottles at police, authorities said Friday.

Police arrested two people near the University of California, Berkeley campus, said Officer Andrew Frankel, a spokesman for the Berkeley Police Department.

The unrest began around 11 p.m. Thursday after a crowd of more than 100 people gathered on campus for an open-air dance party to build support for an upcoming statewide protest over education funding cuts.

Ah, yes. Dance party protests really show how you are down for the struggle.

Students and activists have staged demonstrations in recent months at public colleges across California to protest deep budget cuts that have led to steep tuition hikes, enrollment cuts, faculty furloughs and reduced course offerings.

In Berkeley, about 50 people broke through a fence surrounding Durant Hall, which is closed for renovation, and about 20 entered and occupied the building, said Cpt. Margo Bennett of the UC Police Department.

The group smashed windows, sprayed graffiti, damaged construction equipment, knocked over portable toilets and hung up a banner promoting the March 4 rally, UC officials said. Others blocked police from entering the building.

They blocked the police? How?

Aren’t the police armed?

UC police is investigating the incident, Bennett said. It’s unclear how many of the people involved were UC Berkeley students.

The crowd later marched to nearby Telegraph Avenue, where protesters broke the glass doors of a Subway restaurant and set fire to trash bins, Frankel said.

More than 40 police officers from several local agencies arrived to subdue the crowd, which pelted the riot gear-clad officers with rocks, beer bottles and other projectiles, Frankel said. Two officers suffered minor injuries.

The two people arrested were 28-year-old Marika Goodrich and 26-year-old Zachary Miller, Frankel said. They were booked on charges that include resisting arrest and inciting a riot.

Goodrich is a UC Berkeley student, and Miller was a Berkeley student last semester but is not registered this semester, according to UC officials…

28 and 26 year old ‘students.’

At UC Santa Cruz, officials have sent summons to 45 students accused of occupying and damaging a campus building in a November protest against fee hikes. The students have been ordered to appear before the director of student judicial affairs, who has the authority to issue sanctions ranging from a warning to expulsion, said spokesman Jim Burns.

Rallies, marches, teach-ins and class walkouts are planned at college campuses and public spaces in California and other states on March 4, which is being called a "National Day of Action for Public Education."

California has some of the least expensive universities in the country. They are practically free.

So what if the state is about to go bankrupt? You can’t expect people to pay for a college education.

That’s racist unfair!

Typical of the left when they are upset…violence and destruction. Of course, nothing will be thought out of the ordinary on how the anger was displayed. It was perfectly understandable and necessary. But those tea party people…by gosh those astroturfing, racist, angry mobs must be stopped regardless of the fact they caused no acts of violence or destruction, to my knowledge, at any of the rallies.

Children are always more demanding than adults. Babies are more demanding that children.

Our country is ruled by children.

That’s why Obamy is the most dangerous person to arise in 80 years.

He’s not getting his way because the adults are saying no.

Will he be able to control his anger?

    Don’t bet on it.

  3. Tater Salad says:

Now, now liberals. Quit the violent protesting……….again! These are the same jerks or better known as hypocrits in modern society that bash the Tea Party Express. Wasn’t it Nancy Pelosi who called the Tea Party people…Nazi’s and now her constitutents are now rioting. Nancy…………get out from under your desk. It is all clear………..for now!

Liberalism now exposed and their love for entitlements, paid for by someone else other than “them”.

  4. Tater Salad says:

We now can equate California, home of Nancy Pelosi, Barbara “Boxcar” Boxer, Jerry Brown and all the rest of the Progressives as the “New Greece” of Obama’s New America and “Change” we all can believe in. How appropriate!

Other than UCI Irvine and to a very narrow degree UCSD, the rest of the UC system is just a continuation of the public school gulag. Weigh them against the heavies like USC, Chapman, USD, CalTech – well normally this would be a case of you get what you pay for. 26 and 28 year-old drugged out institutionalized student zombies with very secure freedom of speech rights including the destruction of property.

But instead, we’re the ones paying for the nationalized tuition grants, we’re paying for the babysitters pensions, the salaries. We’re paying for the buildings they vandalize and their repair.

    Change is a comin’.

  6. VMAN says:

God forbid that they would cancel classes like “America sucks 101” or “kill whitey 101”

White liberals have to be the biggest gullible suckers anywhere on earth!

Just like the ‘noose case’ shakedown article posted on here, this is just another attempt to pull the lever on the pity slot machine.

The campus administrations have a 100% cave-in ratio, and everyone knows this! When you finally suck enough butt to get a cushy college level job, not even a stick of dynamite will pry them off that chair. You know it and I know it.
