Shocker: Bush Speaks Against Appeasement

From an outraged New York Times:

Bush Speech Criticized as Attack on Obama

By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG

May 16, 2008

JERUSALEM — President Bush used a speech to the Israeli Parliament on Thursday to denounce those who would negotiate with “terrorists and radicals” — a remark that was widely interpreted as a rebuke to Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential contender, who has argued that the United States should talk directly with countries like Iran and Syria.

Mr. Bush did not mention Mr. Obama by name, and the White House said his remarks were not aimed at the senator, though they created a political firestorm in Washington nonetheless.

In a lengthy speech intended to promote the strong alliance between the United States and Israel, the president invoked the emotionally volatile imagery of World War II to make the case that talking to extremists was no different than appeasing Hitler and the Nazis.

“Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along,” Mr. Bush said. “We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: “Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.” We have an obligation to call this what it is — the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.”

The Obama campaign issued an angry response. In an e-mail statement to reporters, the senator denounced Mr. Bush for using the 60th anniversary of Israel to “launch a false political attack,” adding, “George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the president’s extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel.”

Other Democrats leapt to Mr. Obama’s defense, among them Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, who accused Mr. Bush of taking politics overseas.

“The tradition has always been that when a U.S. President is overseas, partisan politics stops at the water’s edge,” Mr. Emanuel said in a statement. “President Bush has now taken that principle and turned it on its head.”

The White House press secretary, Dana Perino, said the comment was not a reference to Mr. Obama and Mr. Bush was simply reiterating his own longstanding views.

“I understand when you’re running for office you sometimes think the world revolves around you — that is not always true and it is not true in this case,” Ms. Perino told reporters here

Isn’t it funny how Mr. Obama and his lickspittle minions (in and out of the media) just assume this was a specific reference to him?

Of course it could be (and should be) applied to just about any and all of the members of the Surrender Democrat Party.

After all, if the shoe fits…

But why is it that Mr. Obama is so ashamed of being what he is?

This actually seems to be an ongoing pattern with the gentleman, when you think about it.

As is lying:

“George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists…”

Oh, really?

From the very first Democrat debate, back in July 23, 2007:

Maybe Mr. Obama thinks we have even worse memories than he does.

“The tradition has always been that when a U.S. President is overseas, partisan politics stops at the water’s edge,” Mr. Emanuel said in a statement. “President Bush has now taken that principle and turned it on its head.”

What about a former U.S. President speaking to a leader of a terrorist organization? What about s Speaker of the House trying to negotiate with the leader of a terrorist supporting country? Don’t these people have any sense of the absurd? Do they assume that all Americans have the attention spans ad memories of fleas?

A little sensitive there, Barack? Oh yea, you’re ready for the big chair……

BTW, “talk to Hitler” was Sen William Borah, a republican no less….Given that he was an attorney by profession, it is not surprising that he thinks “talk” could have worked with Hitler. Who else is an attorney in this post?

“partisan politics stops at the water’s edge” What a laffer! To quote Dennis Miller, Mr. Emmanual must have “balls the size of Alpha Centuri” What about Pelosi and Carter gallavantin’ all over the Mideast? Bush was quoting a depression era senator. Leave it to these thin-skinned babies to be “shocked and appalled” Geez, this is just like one of my homeowner’s association meetings……

I hereby formally apologize on behalf of the entire baby boomer generation and their acolytes to all of the warriors who have fought for the American ideal. (God, there must have been a lot of bad acid back in the ’60’s).

I whole heartedly agree EdmoHuge and TheChicagoWay.

Where has talk like this been for 7 1/2 years? Nancy Pelosi and her entourage along with Jimmy Carter should have thrown in jail as soon as they set foot back in this coutry after their “appeasement” trips.

Excellent points Chicago and Edmo, but why would Obama’s people care what a “loser” and lame duck president with extremely low approval ratings says?

Obama doesn’t support terrorists, he just hangs out with them, and accept money from their bag man in Chicago.

And regarding the “president’s extraordinary politicization of foreign policy”: How do you characterize the Democrats position on the War in Iraq?

Any notion of presidential decorum was flushed down the toilet with Clinton’s paid UAE speeches where he was overtly critical of the sitting US administration and the entire post-presidency of Jimmy Carter — rather that should include Carter’s presidency as well.

Great comments EdmoHuge, TheChicagoWay and EvaTheFrisbeeDog.

I am getting so tired of the MSM and Democrats undermining the President at every turn. Every time the USA has ever tried to “negotiate with “terrorists and radicals”” it only led to empowering them. (Ask Carter and Clinton how all of their negotiating and apeasement worked out for them.)

BO sounds like a whinny child and is clearly not ready to be POTUS with this “you owe me an apology” attitude over every issue.
What an ego! Besides, how can BO think or make decisions objectively? His experiences in life limit him to only seeing America from an union activist’s mindset.

Noyzmakr…. I guess there is no such thing as treason anymore.

I feel as though we are all just watching in a stupor, with disgust and horror, as America as we know it, crumbles to the ground. Sigh.

Sadly, I think you’re correct. It wouldn’t take but one prosecution of treason of either the NYT for printing government secrets or an appeasing politician going to our enemies and “negotiating” against the orders of the President to bring all this traitoress activity to an end.

The media and left would sceam bloody murder, but one traitor dangling at the end of a well knotted rope would put a stop to this idiocy that the American people have been subjected to and tolerated for far too long.

Start with Jimmy Carter or Ted Kennedy. I don’t care which.

What a little girl this Obama is! Waaaa, waaaa—Mr. Bush is so mean! Thin skinned, so thin skinned. I can understand Hillary and Nancy—but rumor has it that Obama is a man–not a boy. Not a girl…..

  8. BillK

Bush speaks against appeasement, yet states Global Warming is real.

    Something there doesn’t compute.

  9. DEZ

Of course the masters of the universe have chimed in.
Biden, Durbin, Hillary and Ms. Skeletor herself, AKA Polosi.
Bush never mentioned Obama by name, But the party of appeasment is howling anyway, I think that they do protest to much, and I take it as a sign of guilt!
Obama is on video admitting he would have a nice little tea party with terrorists, and the SOB meant it!

  10. sheehanjihad

why is it that the democrats sing nicey nice songs to terrorism, then howl with indignity when they are exposed for what they are? For once, Bush showed a pair, called the entire party on it’s appeasement policy, and gets drubbed for it? Democrats are cowards, weaklings, and strive to remain in power for the sake of being in power. They could care less about America, unless it can line their collective pockets! Seeing pelosi droning on like she did, talking about indignity, I cant help but see that scarf she pulled over her uber taught skin……wishing within herself it was a burkah. Those people are dangerously ignorant of the real threat. This coming from the party who’s candidate promised to talk with Iran, as though now somehow they arent terrorists? Ignorance is no excuse when you sit at the adult table barak! Either learn how to lead, or get back to the extra card table with your democrat children…..
