Edwards Finally Admits To Lying About Affair

From a despondent ABC News:

Edwards Admits Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential Candidate

In ABC News Interview, Edwards Says He Cheated, but Did Not Father Child

By RHONDA SCHWARTZ and BRIAN ROSS

August 8, 2008 — John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extra-marital affair with a novice film-maker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today.

In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 42-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.

Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter’s baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test.

Edwards said he knew he was not the father based on timing of the baby’s birth on February 27, 2008. He said his affair ended too soon for him to have been the father.

A former campaign aide, Andrew Young, has said he was the father of the child.

According to friends of Hunter, Edwards met her at a New York city bar in 2006. His political action committee later paid her $114,000 to produce campaign website documentaries despite her lack of experience.

Edwards said the affair began during the campaign after she was hired. Hunter traveled with Edwards around the country and to Africa.

Edwards said his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family became aware of the affair in 2006.

Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife’s cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter. Elizabeth Edwards has since been diagnosed with an incurable form of the disease.

When the National Enquirer first reported the alleged Edwards-Hunter affair last October 11, Edwards, his campaign staff and Hunter vociferously denounced the report.

The story is false, it’s completely untrue, it’s ridiculous,” Edwards told reporters then.

He repeated his denials just two weeks ago

Edwards denied paying any money to Hunter to keep her from going public but said it was possible some of his friends or supporters may have made payments without telling him

Oh, our sides.

How much you want to bet the outrage is far less than that expressed at Ann Coulter’s harmless “fag” joke? In fact, it will probably soon be argued that she forced Mr. Edwards into this, to prove his manliness.

But suffer through the five plus minutes of this YouTube click from the Edwards campaign, if you want to see this outrageously smug hypocrite at his very best:

John Edwards - Q&A: Faith & Honesty

And, if you still want more, there is this clip, also from the Edwards campaign:

John Edwards - Father of the Year Award

Interestingly, this award was given to our hero at around the time the alleged “love child” was conceived.

    No shock here.

How much sympathy is Liz-Beth gonna get? Way too much is my guess. She insults all married female cancer victims by her willing participation in his barf-inducing presidential campaign.

Birds of a feather. We are all better off if he is ignored from now on.

You ask how much do we want to bet Ms. Pickler knew of this affair when she wrote the story. Nothing. And if not this affair, then she knew of others, especially if she’d been following the Edwards campaign. The idea that this one was the only one requires a stunning degree of wilful blindness. Sure, Edwards paid this one 100K plus for cheap video, but that’s ok. His donors paid for that, plus the travel expenses, I’m sure. What the bias media will not report to advance the Dems is amazing. By the way, nice Friday afternoon news release. And think about it. He still denies the baby is his. So why confess to the affair? As a trial lawyer, John Edwards just hurt my practice more than all the misleading insurance industry misinformation propaganda thrown to the public in the last five years.

I actually called the AP office in Raleigh NC and informed them that their first couple versions of the story omitted the party affiliation. They gasped (or pretended to) and fixed it.

I also called WRAL-TV in Raleigh and the Charlotte Observer, who had posted their own stories online that also omitted the affiliation. Both have since fixed it.

I called ABC news in New York and spoke to Brian Ross’ secretary and she said that “the story had been cleared and vetted and was running the way it was” (with party affiliation in the fifth sentence).

I also instant messaged Miami Herald editors to tell them the story wasnt even on their site — and reminded them Larry Craig didnt even run for president (pre-empting their arguments for not running the Edwards story). It appeared about 20 mintues later.

I just called WCNC TV in Charlotte to tell them their live report at 4:30 completely omitted party affiliation also. They claim they will fix it “later”, but I doubt they will)

Keep on the lookout for these things folks… I can bet your local/regional TV station or newspaper will omit this important detail.

Edwards denied paying any money to Hunter to keep her from going public but said it was possible some of his friends or supporters may have made payments without telling him…

Now that is a statement that truly requires a “willing suspension of disbelief”.

If he were not the baby daddy, he would have the paternity test already done.

    This stinks to high heaven.

“If he were not the baby daddy, he would have the paternity test already done.”

Edwards has to deny this so as to maintain that he wasn’t “riding dirty” after Elizabeth’s cancer recurred.

    We have our doubts.

“I want to see our party lead on the great moral issues — yes, me a Democrat using that word — the great moral issues that face our country. . .

“I’d rather be successful or unsuccessful based on who I really am, not based on some plastic Ken doll that you put up in front of audiences, that’s not me, you know?”

    Well his name isn’t Ken.

Must be Hunter he’s talking to off-camera as he relaxes like a Sultan.

    Edwards latest press release:

In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs. I recognized my mistake and I told my wife that I had a liaison with another woman, and I asked for her forgiveness. Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public. When a supermarket tabloid told a version of the story, I used the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it. But being 99% honest is no longer enough.

I was and am ashamed of my conduct and choices, and I had hoped that it would never become public. With my family, I took responsibility for my actions in 2006 and today I take full responsibility publicly. But that misconduct took place for a short period in 2006. It ended then. I am and have been willing to take any test necessary to establish the fact that I am not the father of any baby, and I am truly hopeful that a test will be done so this fact can be definitively established. I only know that the apparent father has said publicly that he is the father of the baby. I also have not been engaged in any activity of any description that requested, agreed to or supported payments of any kind to the woman or to the apparent father of the baby.

It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry. In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up - feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.

I have given a complete interview on this matter and having done so, will have nothing more to say.

Calling this “99% honesty” is almost Clintonian.

    What a buffoon.

    What a typical Democrat.

“Here’s the first video produced by his concubine”

    That is PERFECT!

Oh, our sides, indeed. Can’t say I’m surprised at all, either by Breck Girl’s extracurricular activities or by the media’s wishful thinking that if they ignore it, it will go away. These Democrat presidential candidates always want to be the second coming of JFK. How fitting that it’s JFK’s worst qualities they always bring to the table. Will they never learn to keep their pants zipped?

Now the media that has done everything to suppress this story is whining and wants an apology.

“Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife’s cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter.”

Well thank God. I was starting to think the guy was sleazy or something! What a POS.

  17. BillK

LMGB, I ROTFL when I read that - because you know, it shows he’s not heartless.

I’m actually waiting for his wife to say that she told him he should keep in touch with her so - snif - he wouldn’t be lonely when she’s gone.

  18. Sharps Rifle

I’m amazed his afair was with a woman…

  19. wardmama4

NSYJ - gag me - I think I need to shower after listening to that. . .

-’said his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family became aware of the affair in 2006′- so like Her Royal Clinton - Elizabeth lied to enable her hubby to get a shot at the Presidency?

So Edwards found it ok (while campaigning for President) to lie because the story wasn’t completely true -’In Friday’s statement, he said that he used “the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it’-, he is trying to imply that because ‘he did not love her’ it is somehow less smarmy, we are to believe -’Edwards denied paying any money to Hunter to keep her from going public but said it was possible some of his friends or supporters may have made payments without telling him’- on his ‘good’ word, and finally simply because this lying sack of politicial and legal smarminess says so we are to believe him that the affair was over and so the baby couldn’t possibly be his. . .Yeah, like anyone is going to believe the Silky Pony ever again.

I did read somewhere that the implication of the press reporting it now - is to enable Her Royal Clinton to step up to be VP - which has it’s own irony about it - I wouldn’t want to be Obamanation with HRC ‘a heartbeat away from the Presidency.’ Since it wouldn’t require an actual vote to get her into the Oval Office. . .

No wonder America is sinking fast - get rid of the lying, corrupt and unethical politicians - and America could be back on her feet in no time.

Go, jimwilson! Good for you. That’s exactly what they need. A kick in the pants every five minutes.

And as for great public relations instincts:
“In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 42-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.”

He says “Yes, I schtupped her, but I didn’t love her” as though that should make him not such a bad guy. I don’t think that’s going to up his popularity with the soccer moms and single mothers. What an idiot.

  21. U NO HOO

No one has mentioned Frances Quinn. The young lady has an extra strike against her already.
