GLAAD Demands And Gets Jerry Lewis Apology

From those moral arbiters at CNN:

Gay rights group to Jerry Lewis: Apologize for slur

(CNN) — The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Tuesday denounced comedian Jerry Lewis’ use of the word “fag” on Lewis’ annual Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy and called on him to apologize.

“Jerry Lewis’ on-air use of this kind of anti-gay slur is simply unacceptable,” GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano said in a statement posted on the group’s Web site. “It also feeds a climate of hatred and intolerance that contributes to putting our community in harm’s way.” …

Giuliano said GLAAD is requesting a meeting with the comedian, who has done the Labor Day telethon for 42 years.

“We want to sit down with him, help him understand why these words are so hurtful, and give him an opportunity to raise public awareness about the destructive impact of these kinds of anti-gay slurs, even more so in attempted humor,” he said in his statement…

The GLAAD crowd should hook up with the Muslims. Both groups are past masters at being easily and perpetually outraged.

But of course Mr. Lewis immediately acceded to their demands.

Jerry Lewis drops anti-gay slur during telethon

Showman apologizes for ‘bad choice of words,’ says ‘there are no excuses’

Sept 4, 2007

NEW YORK – Jerry Lewis dropped an anti-gay slur — the same one that got Isaiah Washington of “Grey’s Anatomy” in trouble — during the 18th hour of his annual Labor Day telethon.

He apologized Tuesday for a “bad choice of words.” …

Monday’s monologue prompted a critical statement Tuesday from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Neil Giuliano, GLAAD president, called Lewis’ use of the term “simply unacceptable.”

“It also feeds a climate of hatred and intolerance that contributes to putting our community in harm’s way,” Giuliano said.

In a statement Tuesday, Lewis said he was making “a joking comment to a member of my production team.”

“I apologize to anyone who was offended,” he went on. “Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard. In the family atmosphere of the telethon, I forget that not everyone knows me that well.

“That something like this would distract from the true purpose of the telethon pains me deeply. … I accept responsibility for what I said. There are no excuses,” he said…

But who knows if this is sufficiently groveling. And surely there must be some financial reparations made.

Thank goodness he didn’t actually say the word, or it would have been the end of his career and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
