Shocker: IL Prison Gets Gitmo Detainees

From a gladdened Associated Press:

Ill. prison to get Gitmo detainees

By Henry C. Jackson, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Taking an important step on the thorny path to closing the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the White House plans to announce Tuesday that the government will acquire an underutilized state prison in rural Illinois to be the new home for a limited number of terrorist suspects held at Guantanamo.

Administration officials as well as Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn will make an official announcement at the White House.

Officials from both the White House and Durbin’s office confirmed that President Barack Obama had directed the government to acquire Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Ill., a sleepy town near the Mississippi River about 150 miles from Chicago.

A Durbin aide said the facility would house federal inmates and no more than 100 detainees from Guantanamo Bay.

Republicans were quick to criticize the administration’s plan.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said the American people "already have rejected bringing terrorists to U.S. soil." He accused the administration of failing to explain how transferring the detainees would keep the public safer than keeping them offshore in Cuba.

The facility in Thomson had emerged as a clear front-runner after Illinois officials, led by Durbin, enthusiastically embraced the idea of turning a near-dormant prison over to federal officials.

Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill., said Tuesday morning he had "full confidence that the facility will hold these terrorism suspects safely and securely." In a statement, Burris said that with Illinois struggling with 11 percent unemployment, the transfer will be "a great economic benefit to the state by creating over 3,000 well-paying jobs and bringing in valuable federal dollars to fund local facility operations."

The Thomson Correctional Center was built by Illinois in 2001 as a state prison with the potential to house maximum security inmates. Local officials hoped it would improve the local economy, providing jobs to a hard-hit community. State budget problems, however, have kept the 1,600-cell prison from ever fully opening. At present, it houses about 200 minimum-security inmates.

Obama has faced some resistance to the idea of housing terrorism suspects in the United States, but in Thomson many have welcomed the prospect as a potential economic engine. Thomson Village President Jerry Hebeler, was asleep when the word came that Thomson had been chosen.

"It’s news to me, but then I’m always the last to know anything," Hebeler said Monday night of the news affecting his town of 450 residents. "It’ll be good for the village and the surrounding area, especially with all the jobs that have been lost here."

But Hebeler said he wouldn’t rejoice until "the ink is on the paper" because previous plans for increased use of the nearly empty prison have fallen through

Gosh, what a shock to see this ‘perk’ go to Mr. Obama’s home state. And just in time for Kwanza Christmas!

Let’s hope that Mr. Durbin will be able to keep his state’s prison guards from acting like Nazis or Pol Pot, unlike those evil thug guards in Guantanamo.

But speaking of benefits, how is it that imprisoning terrorists in the US is good for the economy, but imprisoning regular run of the mill drug users and other common criminals (like Mr. Burris) is a drain on our economy and should be curtailed?

Just think how many more jobs would be saved and created if we started locking up illegal aliens.

And yet Mr. Obama is insisting we stop jailing them.

Why is that?

What I want to know is
    1. why Obama knowing of his empty going to waste homie prison, was threatening conservative states military bases & prisons (when it is against the constitution) to house them,

    2. why only 100 prisoners, if it’s a 200 prison base, (is it so they have more room and luxery like they do at Gitmo?

The irony of Chicago under Obama reign refused to give count of crimes off the U.S. map, but we know a high rate of violence and a 9 year old empty prison. Obama & rev Wright Trinity ministered to sex offenders, his work with Ayers to stop discipline of youth criminals. Great chance for their ministry.

Obama “blamed” the Chicago police for not making Chicago ghettos safer, one finger pointing at police wanting the blacks to destroy each other, the other finger pointing at police for arresting more blacks.

It may end up like in Mexico where the guards aid the prisoners in escaping.

Does Durbin know that Obama still hates America for not sending U.S. soldiers over to his homie Indonesia years before he was born to stop their civil war. Even America U.S. soldiers like his uncle who fought & freed Indonesia from Japan & the Dutch who had taken over, or the U.S. that gave millions to Indonesia after the tsunami, is not enough to mend Obama’s bitterness. And Kentucky Fried Chicken and Nike’s destroyed his country, and his mother couldn’t sell handmade baskets anymore and had to go work for the horrible Americans that she hated.

    Obama’s focus on enviornmental concerns;
The rain forrests in Indonesia are “victim” to the cultivation of rice, tea, coffee, and palm oil.
And the orangutans are now an endangered species; and only a few hundred Samatran tigers remain.

The hypocrisy in the reduction of tigers is that Indonesian Obama & his stepfather believed eating tigers gave a man power. They eat the tigers. Tigers don’t eat trees, they eat animals and people.
The worst is after the millions we gathered at churches and workers aiding after the tsunami Obama has the audacity to say
“Most Americans can’t locate Indonesia on a map”.
Yet, the U.S. is evil for not sending U.S. soldiers to end Indonesia’s Civil war, and he does not believe that they weren’t aware.

Obama’s narcissism is all about him. He complains of being chewed out when he took acting at Occidental from a girl that accused him of narcissism, yet I recall one of his last campaign speeches, he says what he’s learned in life it that it’s “not about me”. Nothing can be further from the truth.

And the Republicans need to quit being passive. It only makes bullies worse.

  3. U NO HOO says:

Sounds like earmarked porkulus to have the government buy a prison in the POTUS’ home state, no not Hawaii.

Aint we got a prison in Cuba that is being emptied? Sounds stoooopid, sorry Weird Al, to me.

  4. crosspatch says:

How long before someone drives a tractor trailer load of ammonium nitrate in there and breaks them out? Or pays a few guards a few million dollars each to look the other way? Gitmo is more secure because you can’t just drive up to the prison. Anyone that doesn’t belong is immediately obvious. Nobody flies helicopters anywhere near Gitmo except our military.

This is NOT going to turn out good. I would imagine the attacks and attempts to begin breaking these people out will begin immediately.

We have the dumbest President EVER!

  5. crosspatch says:

The prison guard union is probably an SEIU affiliate.

“state Dems fire back that the jobs are needed”

So they are going to hire some Joe Blow off the street to guard the world’s most dangerous terrorists who have millions of dollars at their disposal?

I have never seen such a hare-brained stunt in all of my life. So you have some guard that is behind in his mortgage, think he might be bought for a couple of million? What if someone follows that guard home, waits for him to leave for work the next day, and takes his family hostage? Who the hell is going to WANT to guard these people? Who guards the guards and their families?

    It is just NUTS!

  6. Move_Zig says:

The real danger is that before they get to the level of your semi truckload scenario, is an alternative scenario of conducting a mass-hostage situation on a school, such as Besland (again, Islamic extremists who beset a Russian school and slaughtered 334, of which about 200 were children).

The Muslim have been taking hostages since year one of Islam (check out the history of Vlad Dracul, for instance). http://www.donlinke.com/drakula/vlad.htm Not to mention the American hostages held in Iran during the Carter administration, the hostages held in Beirut, and in every airliner, bus or train hijacked by Islamic terrorists during the 1960’s 1970’s and 1980’s.

We will have Obama to thank for setting up the scene for that foreseeable and entirely-preventable tragedy.

    • crosspatch says:

I can think of DOZENS of scenarios. It would take them about a month to figure out where all the guards live and what their work schedules are. So, one day, they take the family of every single guard on shift captive. They demand that the guards look the other way while “certain prisoners” are let out. If this prison’s mission is to produce jobs, that implies there will be some hiring. You better bet your butt that al Qaida will have people applying for those jobs. And their names will be Bob or Joe. This is so completely asinine as to be mind blowing. It opens so many security problems that the only thing I can figure is that Obama is doing this intentionally in order to precipitate a crisis.

This is a totally screwball idea.

  7. Liberals Demise says:

    Ground Zero #2
Now that the location has been picked, the terrorist can scuttle their ideas of building a Navy. Seeing they already have an abundance of ground forces.

Now can we try Ali Bama for treason?

  8. Move_Zig says:

    Yes gents,

Just think a combination of Beslan, Mumbai and 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre. There will be much celebration in the lands of Dar Al Islam.

This action by Obama is criminal incompetence at the very least, and more likely treason, by setting the stage for a massive terroristic attack in America’s heartland.

  9. Rusty Shackleford says:

Who’s to say that somehow some of them don’t “get lost in transit”?

On the very face of it, it’s a bad idea; Something democrats seem to have in abundance.

  10. Confucius says:

    I have some questions:

–What will Mohammed look like as a tattoo?
–Can the community cell’s one toilet double as a foot bath?
    –Is sodomy considered pork?

I can’t wait to see the riots. On one side, shanks; on the other, IEDs.

  11. canary says:

Confucius cute. The prisoners will be more of handful when they find out they left Gitmo Grove for a worse place they will all declare abuse.

A woman told me her arrogant muslim boyfriend told her they practice sodomy with women as it’s not considered sex. (He may have been lying), but in Africa muslims do bizarre sex. And then Bill Clinton had different views on sex too. Hillary too. Maybe, Obama is finally giving Michelle some after ignoring her and the girls for so many years.
