Obama Finally ‘Resigns’ From Trinity Church

From a relieved CNN:

Obama resigns from controversial church

May 31, 2008

(CNN) — Barack Obama resigned Saturday from his Chicago church — where controversial sermons by his former pastor and other ministers had created repeated political headaches for the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination — his campaign confirmed.

The resignation comes days after the Rev. Michael Pfleger, a visiting Catholic priest, mocked Obama’s Democratic rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton, for crying in New Hampshire during the runup to the primary there.

Previously, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright — former pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ and Obama’s minister for about 20 years — drew unwanted attention for the campaign when videos of several of his fiery sermons surfaced.

In them, Wright suggested the U.S. government may be responsible for the spread of AIDS in the black community and equated some American wartime activities to terrorism.

Obama has said he was not present for the controversial sermons by Wright or Pfleger and had condemned both — most recently saying he was “deeply disappointed” by Pfleger’s “divisive, backward-looking rhetoric.”

Still, one hopes Mr. Obama doesn’t regret this rash decision.

Perhaps he should wait for another twenty odd years.

 Update!

Further confirmation from the Associated Press:

Obama quits Chicago church after long controversy

ABARDEEN, S.D. (AP) — Barack Obama is resigning a 20 year membership in the Trinity United Church of Christ in the aftermath of inflammatory remarks by former pastor the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Obama campaign communications director Robert Gibbs said Obama had submitted a letter of resignation to the church and would discuss his decision in a session with reporters later Saturday.

Comments by Wright have posed an unwanted problem for Obama, front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Behold the power of focus groups.

And (ahem) the internet.

Just who the hell believes anything that sack of shiitte says? He could say the sun was going to come in the east tomorrow morning but I would have to see it for myself before I would say he was telling the truth.

Barry would rather climb a tree and tell a lie as to stand on the ground and tell the truth.

BTW, Do all these half-breed blacks realize that when the repartitions are handed out that they will only get a percentage of the money?

    Just asking…

I hope that the bus has monster tires.

Wow - Obama The Movement, The messiah, the Hope and Change that mean, racist America needs and wants - is turning his back upon his spiritual mentor and ‘his’ church - just to make sure he wins the convention to get the nomination.

Do we really want as POTUS someone who first uses suspect judgement as to his associates, friends and mentors - not to mention his church, then for political expediancy throws his grandmother and now his spiritual mentor and church under the bus. Just.To.Get.A.Vote.

The result of todays confab must have gone to Her Royal Clinton - and I wonder if anyone in the black community is just going to be a bit peeved over this abandonment. But I doubt it - anything to get the Movement into the WH.

Uh, 1sttofight - Obama The Movement doesn’t have a right to get down in the struggle from reparations - he doesn’t come from American slave blacks. As was pointed out in the beginning of his stellar run (by the LA Times no less) - he isn’t black enough for America.

A decision twenty plus years in the making, yes indeed, a man of action and integrity.
    The Obamessiah has spoken. ;o)

Saw a great comment over at lgf: His bus runneth over.

    I’m still ROTFLMAO.

Uncle Jemima what took you so long?

He was taking questions a while ago on TV- I missed the beginning but seems like he was presenting it as an attempt to protect his church from the media circus.

Next he will be saying he never really belonged to that church and if you call him on , you are a racist.

…..”Obama has said he was not present for the controversial sermons by Wright or Pfleger and had condemned both….”

That’s not good enough for me. He’s had his surrogates doing all the dirty work since the beginning of the campaign, all the while claiming to abhor such underhanded tactics and character assassinations. Butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth. He’ll claim such activities are beneath him, and that he shouldn’t be held accountable for what others say on his behalf, while secretly cheering them on. Nice try, BO, but no sale!

How do you resign from a Church? What is the MSM talking about? Is BO an employee?

  12. NotStuckOnStupid

Protestant churches do memberships. I’m assuiming this one does too.

  13. Draconian_Clown

Does this mean Trinity church members are no longer being guided to vote for him?

    Dear Jeremiah,

It has come to my attention that Fr. Pfleger was invited to speak at Trinity last Sunday and true to Pfleger’s past rhetoric, he really whooped it up. He made some pretty wild statements about Hillary (funny he should use what I said to him in private) and now the media is jumping on it like a june bug.

Of course, for political expediency, I will have to renounce my membership in Trinity. I am losing big time with white women and white men in certain regions and I can’t win without them. So don’t be alarmed by my resignation. Axelrod has assured me that he has talked to Fr. Pfleger and has let Michael know that this is just political. I still appreciate his pounding on the evil white people of this nation who held my (oops, Michelle’s) family in bondage. We must never let them forget that sin. And for God’s sake, when you are braggin’ on our people, don’t ever slip and mention the damned Buffalo soldiers.

This latest ruckus should be good for you. Be sure to contact the P.R. firm that David put you in touch with. I am sure you will need money to run that new home and there should be a number of speaking engagements that you can line up.

    Hope this helps.

    Your friend,

    Barry

-’His bus runneth over’- LOL what a great comment.

Do we have any idea how many people are left on Obama The Movement’s bus at this point?. . . And boy those tires must be getting nasty with all the people he’s thrown under it in an attempt to get that nomination. Isn’t that Typical Chicago Politics?!?

So tell me, what is so new, different and what’s going to change and where’s the hope (and for what) when it is more and more apparent that Obama The Movement, B. Hussein Obama, Barry, BO, the messiah is just a Typical Political Person?

  16. ptat

Let us not forget that the whole reason Osama joined Trinity was for political advantage and expediency—-the very same reason he is “quitting”. He is a purely political person, whose moral compass spins wildly, attracted to one thing—political opportunity.Nothing new here, nothing that would portend “hope” for “change”, that’s for sure. Actions always speak louder than words….

  17. 1sttofight

This is backfiring on him big time.
