The man was Latino but spoke perfect non-accented English; he was a 50-something California-born man whose grandparents were migrants in the 1950s and into the early 1960s. His parents were/are U.S.-born (mother deceased). His brothers are veterans of Vietnam and he’s always had a job (construction) until recently. He and his brothers helped his grandparents purchase a home, and the family now has a stable place to go, mortgage paid.

He told me he was going to travel to nearby Modesto (in the San Joaquin Valley) to seek work in a food processing plant, and that the plants were hurting for workers. Even though the pay is a fraction of what he was earning in construction, he said, “it’s work, it’s honest work, and I can do it.” He has a bad back but he is sure he can do what needs to be done. His unemployment was long gone and his prospects in the Bay Area were poor.

I hope he was successful in his job hunt.

The “don’t hire illegals” mandate is pretty toothless, and it starts with what the government allowed an employer to do.

As you know, farm labor is a day-to-day kind of work. New workers’ checks were withheld until they came into the office and provided “documentation.” Some of these documents were obviously phony, but we were not allowed to fire that employee or even make some sort of educated guess that those documents were fake. According to the government, employers just weren’t “expert” enough to recognize forged documents. We took photocopies and accepted the validity of the documents. We had to.

If a person went two pay periods without bringing in a green card (work authorization) or other valid ID proving U.S. citizenship (and a social security card), that person was fired, but the paychecks were ultimately handed over.

I am sure that plenty of those “fired” people came back to work with a “new” name or moved on to a different labor contractor and started the cycle over and over.

Perhaps withholding those ill-earned wages would help stop illegals from just drifting from employer to employer…

I suggest, we let them come here, and start making them pay, just like American Citizens have to. Pay taxes, pay for health care, pay for all the services. At least that way, they would be carrying their own load. At least then then business who hire them will have to pay taxes on them as well. Then, those businesses will be just as incentivised to hire the best qualified, not just the cheapest person, that they don’t have to pay employment, workers comp, Social Security, etc. on.

If an illegal immigrant is living in the US, it is because “WE” are letting him/her. As long as “WE” continue to let them, they will come. We Built it, they are coming.

It is the government and the people, and especially business owners (legal or illegal) who turn a blind eye to them. We have laws that currently exist, we don’t enforce them. More laws that we won’t enforce won’t change a thing. We are looking at enforcement and illegal immigrants the wrong way.

You’re right, of course. And it was to be matched with very severe employer sanctions — which somehow have seldom if ever been enforced.

It’s not unlike the spending reductions Congress promised Reagan, if he would just increase taxes. Which never happened either.

Come to think of it, I can’t remember a single instance of a Democrat controlled Congress ever living up to a promise made to a Republican President.

We’re supposed to promote economic development in Mexico? Once again, the Obamanation wants us to solve the world’s problems. With our hard-earned money. Grrr.

Promote economic development in Mexico? By doing what? The major impediment to any economic development is their own government. The revenue generators are oil and dope. The former is under total control of the state and I would suspect (to a greater or lesser degree), that so is the latter. These guys don’t believe in spreading the wealth around. They believe in spreading their disgruntled population around. And that’s not going to change.

That’s easy to do. Just continue down the path that the Democrats in Congress have laid for us. Realize the vision of Barack Obama. Socialize America. Drive the economy into the ground. Minimize freedoms. Force and keep everyone in the proletariat except the elite party leaders. Stifle businesses with a heavy tax burden so they can’t afford to hire new workers.

I know I may not have the mental capacity of the all knowing Messiah, but somethin shur don add up.

There was definite traction once the Bush White House got off its duff and started squeezing these illegals, and punishing the idiot employers that enabled ‘em.

‘Self-deportation’, I think is the word.

But Obama says otherwise.
