This is not really relevent to the discussion, but I have to say that this cartoon made me laugh before I read the speech bubble because it reminds me of the “Summer pinata” in the movie Napoleon Dynamite.

Well is it perhaps that great point you make that’s at the root of this whole thing? The real problem the AP (if not the advocates) has with this cartoon is that Obabbles (or Teleprompter Precedent as we know Him) is being portrayed as the puppet master! He’s the one that’s extorting the racial issue, and the cartoon’s exactly right and you’re exactly right – this whole nomination was a political trap because that’s the only way he works! If it were Bush in that sombrero and a bunch of donkeys lining up to whack the pinata, this cartoon wouldn’t be racist for it’s cultural reference – it’d be racist because people would be thinking Bush is politicizing the race issue to try and hide a bad judge!

The cartoon merely highlights the gauntlet thrown down in front of the Republicans by Obama. “Go ahead, make my day.” Nothing short of a calculated taunt. And guess what? It’s gonna work, too!

bronze..I agree with your explaination of the cartoon. Makes perfect sense the way you explained it.

But my question would be, asuming this to be a lib cartoonist…wouldn’t he rather not bring this to the attention of those of us who are not liberal? What’s his reason in exposing the “game plan”.

I agree with Jason GIllman that the cartoon is brilliant. The cartoonist sees the complicated chess game that Obama is playing. There are many other Latinos judges who could have been nominated, ,but he chose one that was going to be divisive. He wants to peel away the 30% of Latinos who voted for McCain, by baiting the Republicans into saying something offensive.

The best way to proceed is for Republicans to play all this against Obama in 2010, by using the words of Democrats like Schumer against them — They made it so obvious that they were using Sotomayor as a trap for Republicans, In the end the Dems are making a lot of insulting assumptions about Hispanics and using Sotomayor like a pinata, the way the cartoonist captured it. So the cartoonist is brilliant. The people who are screaming racism are sensitive that their Obama was exposed.
