Wiccan display at Green Bay City Hall vandalized

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The mayor declared a moratorium Monday on any more religious displays atop City Hall until the City Council can take up the issue Tuesday.

A vandal took down a Wiccan wreath early Monday, leaving a Christian Nativity scene as the only one left.

Council President Chad Fradette put up a Nativity scene Wednesday night.

Fradette and Mayor Jim Schmitt invited non-Christian religions to submit displays, and the city has received at least six such requests. The pagan Wiccan five-pointed star was the second such display, which was added Friday.

Wicca is a nature-based religion based on respect for the earth, nature and the cycle of the seasons. But variations of the pentacle not accepted by Wiccans have been used in horror movies as a sign of the devil.

Two residents had brought their own symbols Monday morning.

“How is that fair to leave the manger up but not the non-Christian symbols?” said Taku Ronsman, who brought a peace display that she said represents the Unitarian Universalist faith.

Wendy Coriell brought a Christian cross decorated with ornaments and wrapped in American flag paper Monday. She said the flag and cross by themselves were not offensive, but placed together represented a Constitutional violation.

“It’s about the separation of church. That’s why I’m here today,” Coriell said.

A police officer was flagged down just before 12:45 a.m. Monday by a citizen who reported seeing someone on a ladder taking down a decoration atop City Hall.

The ladder was left at the scene and the partially damaged Wiccan wreath was found behind some shrubs nearby.

The City Council is expected to decide Tuesday whether its Advisory Council and Schmitt were right in agreeing that Fradette should be able to put up the nativity scene.

The mayor said during the weekend he plans to forward some preliminary guidelines to the council, including a limit on the time period for the displays and how to determine if a display is representative of a religion…

What war on Christmas?

Wicca is a nature-based religion based on respect for the earth, nature and the cycle of the seasons.

Er, no it isn’t. It is a goofy cult made up by a crackpot a little over fifty years ago.

And whatever this display was, it had nothing to do with this time of year — except to mock Christmas and taunt Christians.
