Talks to Free Maersk Captain Snagged Over Ransom, Will Continue

By Hamsa Omar

April 12 (Bloomberg) — A tentative agreement to release an American held by Somali pirates fell apart over ransom demands and mutual suspicion, according to one pirate, as the U.S. said negotiations would continue.

The captors want a $1.5 million ransom, a man named Da’ud who identified himself as one of the pirates, said today by phone from the area of Eyl, Somalia. “The talks have broken down,” he said.

A spokesman for the U.S. Defense Department, Major Stewart Upton, said that “negotiations continue for the safe and peaceful return” of hostage Richard Phillips, 53, the captain of the Maersk Alabama, who was taken captive by four pirates on April 8. Upton declined to comment further.

“The captive is well, we aren’t going to harm anyone,” Da’ud said. “There haven’t been any gunshots at all.”

The U.S. Navy made “sight contact” with Phillips today, Norfolk, Virginia-based Maersk Line Ltd. said in an e-mailed statement. The company is a unit of Copenhagen-based A.P. Moeller-Maersk A/S.

The pirates are now deciding what to do next, Da’ud said. A tentative deal with negotiators from the U.S. Navy had been reached yesterday, Da’ud said. The lifeboat with the four hostage-takers and Phillips is surrounded by two U.S. warships and helicopters.

Now these scamps are “brigands”?

Obviously, any term is preferable to Muslim terrorists.

Hell. One Seal squad could put a huge dent in the ENTIRE operation.
