From the San Francisco NBC affiliate, KNTV:

Mexican ID Becomes Valid ID in Sonoma County

Mexican nationals will be able to show ID from their home country in Sonoma County.

Mexican nationals will be able to give their country’s state-issued identification cards as valid ID to Santa Rosa police officers and Sonoma County sheriffs the same as a California license.

In Sonoma County, a California driver’s license is accepted as valid identification — but so is a card issued by the Mexican consulate.

Mexican nationals will be able to give their country’s state-issued identification cards as valid ID to Santa Rosa police officers and Sonoma County sheriffs, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported.

The idea is to reduce the immigration-related duties of local cops, the newspaper reported. Accepting Mexican consulate-issued cards will reduce the number of people booked into jail for lacking ID, and ergo, will reduce deportations from Santa Rosa County Jail, the newspaper reported.

Is that to give the local police more time to spend in donut shops? Aren’t the police paid to enforce our laws, which include deporting people who are in this country illegally?

"Today is a great day," Sonoma County Assistant Sheriff Lorenzo Dueñas said. "We’re now going to accept the matriculár consular ID."

Advocates for immigrants point out that almost half of the 921 immigrants turned over to ICE authorities by the jails had not committed a crime, and another third had committed minor offenses, the newspaper reported.

Except that being in the United States illegally is a crime. Albeit, it is not enforced as fiercely as it is in Mexico. But it is still a crime. In fact it is a federal crime. (See below.)

Mexican nationals will need to apply to the consulate for such a card. The consulate will likely set up shop in the area to both issue cards and instruct people how to do so, the newspaper reported.

Maybe we can do the same thing in Mexico. (Just kidding.)

For the record, amazingly enough, being an illegal alien in this country is illegal, according to the US Code:

8 U.S.C. § 1325 : US Code – Section 1325: Improper entry by alien

(a) Improper time or place; avoidance of examination or inspection; misrepresentation and concealment of facts Any alien who

(1) enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers, or

(2) eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers, or

(3) attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact, shall, for the first commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both, and, for a subsequent commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18, or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both…

So will Eric Holder start punishing Sonoma County for not enforcing a federal law?

After all, we can’t have a patchwork of immigration laws across the country.
