And so he returns, a humble and soft spoken man, to the simple backwoods town he has always called home. Even before he became worth $30 million smackerooonies, Souter, or "Massa Dave" as the slack jawed, inbred, ding toed, sway backed, pink eyed locals know him, yearned for a life of quiet contemplation, far away from the lurid lights of Washington, or "Babylon" as he has always called it.

Now he walks the echoing, marble floored corridors of 'Soutercrest', clad only in sandals and a simple monk's cloak, emerging only at night to go for long walks, cruising the dark alleys of this small town, seeking out lonely truck drivers and sailors to comfort...

Thomas Sowell discusses judges with "empathy":

"<b>Appoint enough Supreme Court justices with "empathy" for particular groups and you would have, for all practical purposes, repealed the 14th Amendment, which guarantees "equal protection of the laws" for all Americans.

We would have entered a strange new world, where everybody is equal but some are more equal than others. The very idea of the rule of law would become meaningless when it is replaced by the empathies of judges.

Barack Obama solves this contradiction, as he solves so many other problems, <b>with rhetoric</b>. If you believe in the rule of law, he will say the words "rule of law." And if you are willing to buy it, he will keep on selling it.

Those people who just accept soothing words from politicians they like are gambling with the future of a nation. <b>If you were German, would you be in favor of a law "to relieve the distress of the German people and nation"? That was the law that gave Hitler dictatorial power.</b>"

"There used to be a saying, “New Hampshire. No blax. No tax.”

I have lived in Massachusetts and found it ironic that despite one of the most liberal voting records in history, the people of that state were among the most racist (remember busing from years ago?) and personally conservative (not used in a complimentary way) that I've seen. They disliked outsiders (to the point of rudeness), didn't like to see their towns changed in any way, severely restricted new businesses coming in, and were not keen at all to invest in their communities.

I thought then and think now that they were politically brainwashed by the liberal elite in the universities who spew out a constant stream of socialist propaganda designed to make the peons think they are profitting at the expense of the wealthy. But at crunch time, when it came to them PERSONALLY, it was an entirely different story.

BTW, I think the same applies to 99% of liberals in this country....hypocrits to the bone. They are liberal because they think they are getting over. If that changed, their true torture-loving, racist, war-mongering selves would come out in spades.

I was a "legal assistant" for the Merrimack County Superior Court system when Souter was just a lowly little Superior Court judge. Eons ago. [1978-1982] We lived in Concord, NH, my DH and I. We were going to buy a house in Weare - and relatives would say, "where?" to which I would respond, "exactly." Middle of nowhere. Neighbors for many are the identical twins of those who played extras in the movie "Deliverance." Or they were back then. And, we were looking for a house in '92 or '93?

We left Concord in '98 to move to NC. But I can say one thing for sure for 1998 in Concord, N.H. [Weare, N.H. is not too far from there - 15 miles, maybe.] There used to be a saying, "New Hampshire. No blax. No tax." [SG - feel free to delete this if you feel it is too controversial. Not trying to start any kind of racial war. Just telling the facts as they were back then.]

And, I can tell you for certain that if there were homosexuals living there - they kept their activities in the closet. N.H., for many, many years was a very, very conservative and very, very Republican state. Wasn't until Jeanne Shaheen became governor that things started to change. We left in time - and shortly after Jeanne Shaheen changed the "land scape" of "pristine New Hampshire." Have not been back since we left. No reason. There may be no income or sales tax there but property taxes were stupendous! That, and the fact that it is just too damn cold in the winter...

right on, Confucius.

Davey boy is a shrewd investor, just like the Hildabeast was when her one commodities trade turned a 10,000% profit, yielding $250,000 (in today's dollars)...a million to one shot.

You arrogant Americans! Obsessed with sex and money! I'd like to know just what sidearm he carries on his nocturnal walks (and I figure him for the S&W Model 10 type, all comments are as always welcome). In the Heller decision, he opined that even gays don't have the right to protect themselves - but you KNOW he carries, even with his around-the clock protection. "Do as I say, not as I do" indeed. But you can't blame 41 for Souter, any more than you can blame Ike for Justice Warren. I'm just sorry they couldn't seize his house.

"Souter is the court’s wealthiest justice, but perhaps its most frugal. He arrived in 1990 with reported assets of $627,010, but thanks to a shrewd investment in a New England bank, he now is worth between $6 million and $30 million, according to his financial disclosures"

And he's a judge!?!? Oh, oh ....
Where'd all that come from??? (between $6 million and $30 million) Oh, oh ...

So .. if he's so damned sharp, how come he can't narrow his net worth down to a "reasonable" "between" figure. A $24 million swing is just a tad more than any of us would get by with.

Just sayin' ya' know.

Souter should spread the wealth, and be of service to his community. Be the town bus driver, and drive high school students to school for free.

".......where the big political fight of the day is over whether to charge public high school students to ride the bus to school."

Mr. Souter is more than a "shrewd" investor. To turn $627,010 into $30 million (or even $6 million) is a staggering feat. If these numbers are true, then Mr. Souter handily beat the market--and maybe even Bernie Madoff.

Screwed the Republicans. Timing of his retirement, don't let Bush reappoint a conservative, and now that Obama is in, he can go in peace, knowing there will be an easy replacement.
His favortism of gays adopting and marrying, may mean, grow plants and hug trees, adopt some children or keep up the late night walks in parks.

at 69, he's ready to come out, regain back some youth. quietly, in the dark.

I can't say for sure, but everything I know about the guy points to him being a pervert.

One has to assume that he has wanted out of the limelight for at least 8 years and now feels like he will be followed by somebody even more liberal and perverted than himself.

But I'll say this in his favor. At least he is a quiet pervert.

On the other hand, why isn't he redistributing that $6 to 30 mlllion? Since he has such a fortune, and since he is going back to live in a community with 13 black people, it kinda makes you wonder where the guy is really coming from, doesn't it?
