Spain Socialists Crushed In Historic Defeat

Spain’s ruling Socialists crushed in polls

Sun May 22, 2011

MADRID – Spain’s ruling Socialists suffered a crushing defeat to conservatives in municipal and regional elections Sunday, losing even historic strongholds against a backdrop of economic crisis and unprecedented street sit-ins by Spaniards furious with what they see as selfish and corrupt politicians.

With more than 90 percent of the municipal votes counted, the opposition Popular Party had an advantage of 10 percentage points and more than two million votes — compared to less than a point and 150,000 votes in the last such vote in 2007…

Partial or complete results showed that the party also won virtually all of the 13 regional government that were up for grabs.

The results put the Popular Party in an even stronger position to win general elections due in about a year…

The vote came against a backdrop of economic crisis and unprecedented sit-ins and demonstrations by Spaniards disgusted by the government’s handling of the crisis and the political establishment in general.

Could it be that the voters were also disgusted by socialism itself?

Meanwhile, we have these additional details from an equally outraged Reuters:

Spanish Socialists suffer big defeat in local polls

MADRID, May 23 (Reuters) – Spain’s ruling Socialists reeled on Monday from stinging losses in local elections and now have to balance voter anger over high unemployment and investor demands for austerity measures.

You mean they can’t spend their way out of a recession and high unemployment? Who knew?

A week of protests by Spaniards fed up with the stagnant economy and the EU’s highest jobless rate preceded Sunday’s elections, which left the Socialists out of power in most of the country’s cities and almost all of its 17 autonomous regions.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on Sunday night conceded the Socialists (PSOE) had lost heavily but said he planned to stay on to the end of his term in March next year.

The centre-right opposition Popular Party (PP) has called for the Socialists to resign several times in recent months, but leader Mariano Rajoy did not call for early elections at a victory rally on Sunday night

In the aggregate municipal vote nationwide the PP had a 10-percentage point lead over the Socialists, who have not lost so badly in municipal elections since democracy returned to Spain in 1978 after the Franco dictatorship

This is the most lopsided victory since at least the days of Franco. And yet the Socialists are going to insist on holding on to power? Where is the United Nations? Where is NATO?

Of course, if the party affiliations were reversed ‘world opinion’ would force the conservatives to give up power.

Nevertheless, what great news this is, even for us on this side of the Atlantic. If it can happen in Spain, it can happen here.

Another bit of irony. While our liberal no-nothing neighbors have decried American exceptionalism, cheered the apology tour, shrugged at Pigford and quiet reparations, and don’t mind seeing the American prestige and economic power plummet, they are STILL arrogant enough to think that the US version of socialism will fare better, do it right, and make things better around the world where these other weak, 2nd-rate countries failed.

What about all those green jobs that Spain so famously led the world in creating?

Doesn’t anything make the Spaniards happy?

“If it can happen in Spain, it can happen here.”

Spain doesn’t have 60 million blacks and 40 million illegals, most on welfare and voting–legally or not– for Democrats who promise to keep the FREE STUFF coming!!!!

They most certainly do in their own demographic context, theirs are possibly even more severe with regars to the progress of Sharia. And their welfare state is on the last thread before default. They are the future we are endeavoring to prevent.

It seems like the rest of the world is going conservative but the ruling clique here in the US is ignoring the news. Even Canada and England are going conservative, egad is nothing sacred anymore?
