Start The New Year With Aa For Aardvark

Yes, this piece from the Associated Press is a little dated:

Amani, shown here, was born Dec. 8 to mother Rachaael and father Mchimbaji, at the Detroit Zoo. Amani means "peace" in Swahili.

‘Hideously cute’ baby aardvark born at Detroit Zoo

Dec 23, 2008

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — The stork has left a baby aardvark at the Detroit Zoo.

The zoo announced Tuesday that the 23-inch creature was born hairless but boasting four-inch ears early in the morning of Dec. 8. It weighed 3 pounds, 10 ounces.

Zoo Director of Conservation and Animal Welfare Scott Carter said in a news release that the animal "can only be described as hideously cute."

The infant is named Amani, the Swahili word for "peace." Its gender is unknown pending a DNA test.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak says zookeepers are helping new mother Rachaael raise Amani due to aardvarks’ clumsy nature and poor eyesight.

The long-snouted African mammals can grow up to 5 to 6 feet in length and weigh 90 to 145 pounds.

But given the tradition of posting baby photos on New Year’s Day, what better way to kick off the year than with the Aa’s?

Happy New Year everyone!

Cant tell yet. Maybe if it stands on the back 2 feet we will see if it has airbrushed pecs on its belly.

Is it me or does that thing look like Dennis Kucinich?

Gender is a grammatical term for those languages like French where the names of inanimate objects are masculine or feminine and subject to articles like “el” and “la”, or “le” and “la”. I.e. “el toro” vs “la casa” and “le chien” vs “la chemise”.

Words have a gender. Animals and people have a sex.

Then again, maybe liberals only have a gender.

    BTW

You will have noticed that the word sex is never used by the press as a noun to classify and describe people or creatures.

The change to the word gender was promoted by, you-guessed-it … the feminists and the left — the people who claim not to believe that sex differences exist.
