Sulzberger: Abramson Fired Over Management Style

From Capital New York:

Sulzberger: Abramson’s departure had ‘nothing to do with pay or gender’

By Matthew Lynch | May 17, 2014

New York Times Co. president and publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. issued a statement on Saturday afternoon pushing back against stories that the paper fired former executive editor Jill Abramson in part because she inquired into salary inequities between herself and her male colleagues.

"Perhaps the saddest outcome of my decision to replace Jill Abramson as executive editor of The New York Times is that it has been cast by many as an example of the unequal treatment of women in the workplace," Sulzberger said in the statement. "Rather than accepting that this was a situation involving a specific individual who, as we all do, has strengths and weaknesses, a shallow and factually incorrect storyline has emerged."

And yet ‘shallow and factually incorrect storylines’ are the NYT’s bread and butter. But now, suddenly, facts matter to the NYT? They are usually minor details in their articles attacking conservatives.

Sulzberger has pushed back against reports, telling staffers in a memo this week that Abramson’s pay package was comparable with Keller’s and that in her last year of employment, it was 10 percent higher than his. Instead, Sulzberger cast the decision as purely based on Abramson’s managerial style.

"During her tenure, I heard repeatedly from her newsroom colleagues, women and men, about a series of issues, including arbitrary decision-making, a failure to consult and bring colleagues with her, inadequate communication and the public mistreatment of colleagues," Sulzberger said.

It sounds like Ms. Abramson was just using Obama’s management style: ‘My way or the highway.’ In any case, it’s nice to know she was just fired for being a typical unhinged, over-emotional, irrational, mean-spirited liberal. (Is there any other kind?)

By the way, isn’t the NYT doing the same thing to Jill Abramson that Bill and Hillary did to Bill’s female accusers? The Clintons’ patented ‘nuts and sluts’ defense? The Clintons and their flacks slandered the women who accused him of affairs, and said they were liars and destroyed their reputations.

We sure hope Monica Lewinsky takes up Jill Abramson’s cause. Speaking out against women destroyed by the news media. — Who has been more destroyed than Jill Abramson?

Anyway, we thought it was against the law to discuss an employee in public. Especially, to criticize them publicly after they have terminated. Perhaps Ms. Abramson has a whopping large lawsuit in her future.
