UK Telegraph report:

Al-Qaeda cell killed by Black Death 'was developing biological weapons'

An al-Qaeda cell killed by the Black Death may have been developing biological weapons when it was infected, it has been reported.

The group of 40 terrorists were reported to have been killed by the plague at a training camp in Algeria earlier this month.

It was initially believed that they could have caught the disease through fleas on rats attracted by poor living conditions in their forest hideout.

But there are now claims the cell was developing the disease as a weapon to use against western cities.

Experts said that the group was developing chemical and biological weapons.

Dr Igor Khrupinov, a biological weapons expert at Georgia University, told The Sun: "Al-Qaeda is known to experiment with biological weapons. And this group has direct communication with other cells around the world.

"Contagious diseases, like ebola and anthrax, occur in northern Africa. It makes sense that people are trying to use them against Western governments."

Dr Khrupinov, who was once a weapons adviser to the Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, added: "Instead of using bombs, people with infectious diseases could be walking through cities."

It was reported last year that up to 100 potential terrorists had attempted to become postgraduate students in Britain in an attempt to use laboratories.

Ian Kearns, from the Institute for Public Policy Research, told the newspaper: "The biological weapons threat is not going away. We're not ready for it."

Of course if the UK isn't ready for it, the US is out and out welcoming such an attack.

The issue is the old million monkeys banging on typewriters will eventually end up writing Shakespeare problem.

Now matter how incompetent they are, given enough tries they'll get one right.

As Mr. Bush has stated in the past, we'll never know of the intelligence communities' successes, but they only need to get it wrong once.

Rest assured though that should Iran or North Korea provide them with WMDs, our dear President will have a chat with them about it.

They're incompetent now, but that can't last forever. My guess is Iran - but I'll bet you're right, bousquem, it could easily be Russia, and that's much scarier.

The big gamble we are going to have is how long before these idiots manage to get the formula right and bring a chemical or bio weapon into the US and use it properly. When I first saw the article I thought it was natural plague showing up because the terrorists hadn't bathed in ages so therefore had disease carrying fleas. Maybe if we are all lucky they'll somehow get nerve gas and expose themselves and only themselves to it in the middle of the desert, they're dead and we find the source. Watch said source be either one of the crackpots/tin pot dictators in Iran or their cronies, North Korea, or maybe Russia with the way things seem to be shaping up.

I think the problem would be is that these bozos (and I apologize to bozos everywhere) would get on a plane or cruise ship or go to work in a food processing plant and share it with all of us.

I don't think it's too far off the mark.

From the CDC:

Plague Reappearance in Algeria after 50 Years, 2003

Abstract

An outbreak of plague occurred in the region of Oran, Algeria, from June to July 2003. Algeria had not reported this disease for >50 years. Eighteen bubonic cases were identified, and Yersinia pestis was isolated from 6 patients. Except for the index case-patient, all patients recovered. Targeted chemoprophylaxis, sanitation, and vector control played a crucial role in controlling the outbreak. Epidemiologic and biomolecular findings strongly suggested the existence of a local animal reservoir during this period, but its origin (resurgence or re-importation) could not be determined. This sudden and unexpected reemergence of plague, close to an important commercial seaport, is a textbook illustration of a public health event of international importance. It also demonstrates that the danger of plague reoccurrence is not limited to the currently indexed natural foci.
