‘Super Skimmer’ Tests Are Inconclusive

From a relieved Reuters:

Tests on Gulf oil "superskimmer" inconclusive: ship owner

By Matthew Bigg Mon Jul 5, 2010

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) – Tests on a supertanker adapted to skim large quantities of oily water from the surface of the Gulf of Mexico are inconclusive because of high seas, ship owner TMT Shipping Offshore said on Monday.

Tests on the so-called "super skimmer" conducted just north of the blown out BP Plc well were supposed to be completed on Monday but have been extended because of the weather, said spokesman Bob Grantham.

"After an initial 48-hour testing period results remain inconclusive in light of the rough sea state we are encountering," Grantham said.

"Therefore, working in close coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard, we will be undertaking an additional testing period to make operational and technological adjustments aimed at improving skimming effectiveness given the actual conditions we are encountering in the Gulf," he said.

He said smaller skimming vessels were also struggling to operate in the conditions caused by the aftermath of Hurricane Alex, which passed through the Gulf last week.

The 1,100-foot (335 meter)-long ore and oil carrier named "A Whale" is seen as a potential savior of efforts to clean the oil pollution because it can collect 500,000 barrels (21 million gallons) per day of contaminated water.

It operates by allowing oily surface water into the ship through a series of 12 horizontal slits on the port and starboard sides of the ship near the bow. The liquid is then decanted through a series of tanks to separate oil and water…

If it passes the test, the Taiwanese parent company TMT hopes to secure a contract with BP to skim oil and it is also preparing two additional ships for the task.

Why do we have to go half way around the world for this technology? Why isn’t the United States working on these kind of ships and other more advanced ways to deal with oil spills?

Why isn’t Mr. Obama throwing money at developing new technologies to clean up oil?  Wouldn’t this be a great ‘crisis’ to promote research and development for oil recovery?

This is exactly the kind of R & D that the federal government should be doing. It is actually one of the few things that the government does reasonably well.

And wouldn’t this be a real ‘green technology’ that would both help the environment and allow us to continue to drill for oil? Wouldn’t this be an excellent use of ‘stimulus’ money that everyone would should agree on?

The US could be become the world’s leader in oil spill technology. And there are a lot of major oil spills going on all around the world that we don’t even hear about. (There are practically constant spills in Nigeria, just for starters.)

We could help save the planet, while we and the rest of the world continue to find the oil that they need.

Improving our oil spill technology is certainly a far more feasible goal than any plans to convert our national energy supply to solar and wind power. Solar and wind have not been proven to be viable even after all these years of study and billions of dollars wasted.

After all, how hard could it be to come up with vastly more effective oil spill technology? And whatever it would cost, it would surely pay for itself very quickly. Just look at how tremendously expensive the BP spill is turning out to be.

And who can put a price on an oily pelican?

Wouldn’t any oil skimming be better than none?

They oughta hook a hose up the our biggest vacuum – Obama’s Poll Numbers. That giant sucking sound can be heard coast to coast!

Obama has other matters of state to attend to. Like finding a way to prevent any real solution to the Gulf Oil mess, solving the unemployment mess, solving the real estate mess, solving the illegal immigrant Democrat voter mess, solving the deficit mess, solving the Cap and Trade, er, Energy mess, solving that nasty mess in the middle east, solving the auto industry and banking mess, getting himself reelected, and finding new things to blame on Bush.

    Leave him alone. He’s BUSY.

They said as the boy-president lined up the perfect birdie putt. After it went in the cup, he struck a match and touched it to the end of his KOOL mentol light cigarette, took a long drag, smiled and then touched his middle finger to his cheek in response to his golfing opponent who said he wouldn’t make the putt.

“And who can put a price on an oily pelican?”

    $12.95 retail, $4.50 wholesale.

  5. proreason says:

    What a coincidence.

The hurricane season has come upon us before this critical testing could be accomplished.

Despite, of course, the 24×7 effort to get it accomplished.

  6. bill says:

Isn’t one barrel of oil removed from the Gulf better than no oil removed?

What the hell are they testing for anyway?

We hold these truths to be self-evident.

I almost forgot to tell you, I had my septic tank pumped out last month. Took a half hour, no testing required, the honey dipper laid 50 feet of hose to my back yard and, slurp, the crap was gone.

  9. proreason says:

Mr. HOO, this is F. Yu from the EPA. Mr. reason has graciously allowed me to contact you through his internet personna about a very important matter that has come to the attention of your public servants in the EPA.

It seems that our real-time blog scanner has determined that you recently enacted an “EPA event” in your back yard that was not pre-approved by your public servant, me. And don’t ask me why California can’t change one single data item on a computer record whereas we can scan the entire internet and discover blog posts within seconds of entry. And no, Google isn’t on our payroll, and don’t even ask if we are on Google’s payroll.

Please contact me at your leisure or within 10 minutes, whichever comes first, at my Myspace overseer account to discuss the extent of your payment and other restrictions that will be placed on your immediate family through 8th cousins, to correct this serious breech. As you know, these payments will not be taxes, but rather fair and reasonable fees for your potential criminal liability, if you catch my drift, in this matter.

Thank you and if there is any other way I can be of assistance, please let me know.

Not letting a crisis go to waste is the motto. Obama chose BP to drill in the deep seas. The U.S.’s greatest ships and technology to include NASA’s
last satelite (sp) launched watching the U.S. & Indonesia (more than 90% muslim, to include other muslim countries & N. Africa in this joint adventure)
are busy watching the volcanoes some 6000 feet undersea where they have been drilling holes releasing highly inflammable methane & gas, black plumes
coming from the volcanoes and they ARE NOT TRYING to contain it either. Both deep drilling sites releasing stinking burning sulpher. The animals in the Indonesia seas are being harmed too.

Of course Obama’s threat to shut down NASA made NASA jump to put this satelite in the sky and benefit muslim countries. The on land drilling in Indonesia was not enough either. NASA is just explaining the truth of what they have already done. No ones watching.

Taiwan? Read Obama’s chapter on Race in the Audacity of Hope. He understands the immigration problem as Americans citizens do. But, at the end of the chapter he claims that there is a growing decrease in equality, at the same time in the race chapter explaining America has more black & brown people in America. He acknowledges the problems in illegals breaking the laws, increasing violence. His own anger of having to have a translator to understand Mexican when he get’s his car fixed. He tells of the Mexicans taking our jobs, and his anger of their flying the Mexican flags, and increasing aggression. He acknowledges the borders aren’t safe.
And he admits and even laughs about conning immigrants because
he needs their vote in order to succeed.
He even says 9/11 has increased the danger of immigrants in this country, but says if politics interfere with Middle-Easterns in this country he will join the side of the muslims.
He is angry of the illegals demands to become citizens as they become abusive in their anger, but then he says America more and more becoming a country where people are not equal, he ends the chapter where the Mexicans & Blacks must join together and teach each other. And they will be tested to great lengths as the freedom riders and Parks, to til equality is won and the Mexicans & Blacks can say they accomplished something by running America their way.
And perhaps Obama is finding a way to practice bombing underwater instead of land. Because there is just to much coincidence in the Gulf oil spill and the drilling of the U.S. scientists with Indonesia who are amazed and enjoying the photo’s with high tech cameras and robots watching the colorful display of the volcanoes & black plumes pouring out of them.

    • canary says:

Obama also ends his chapter on race in Audacity of Hope, that blacks need to learn to speak the brown people’s language, so they can tell the Mexicans how bad they’ve had, so they can join together and succeed in a greater tests in the tests they will have to undertake to conquer the white people.

Referring to the illegal Mexicans, “brown people” and black people.

“Their America will be more dizzying in its diversity, its culture more polyglot.”

polyglot – 1. knowing several languages 2. written in several languages
