S&L Named CPAC’s ‘Blogger Of The Year’

We are very proud and flattered to announce that Sweetness & Light has been awarded CPAC’s ‘Blogger Of The Year Award’ for 2009.

It is quite generous of CPAC to pay tribute through us to the websites, both great and small, who soldier on in the conservative cause.

At our best we are the ‘citizen journalists’ whom Matt Drudge envisioned ten years ago at his pivotal National Press Club appearance.

We report the news that the rest of the media ignore. And we expose the biases in the stories they do report. We are the media’s real fact checkers.

May our numbers increase a thousand-fold.

And with the encouragement and recognition of organizations like CPAC, which is the heart and soul of the modern American conservative movement, we believe they will.

(Of course some of us are still open to Soros money, as well.)

Invited speakers for the 36th Annual Conservative Political Action Conference include: Gov. Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, Phyllis Schlafly, Gov. Bobby Jindal, Amb. John Bolton, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Michael Barone, David Horowitz and many other conservative luminaries.

As things currently stand the ‘Blogger Of The Year’ award is to be presented on Saturday, the conference’s closing day, right after an address from Ann Coulter. Which is a bit like being the juggling act that had to follow the Beatles on Ed Sullivan.

CPAC’s reservations are currently running 30% above last year’s numbers, so you might want to book early if you plan to attend.

For further information and updates, please visit their site: www.cpac.org. We will also post more details as we receive them.

Steve, congrats on the award! You deserve it for having such a great blog with content I can’t find anywhere else.

  2. DW says:

    My heartiest congratulations, Steve!
    It’s well-deserved.

    Watch out for Obama’s KGB.

  3. sheehanjihad says:

Steve! You deserve this…plus your mention in Coulter’s “Guilty”. This was my first public foray into the political scene, and I have never once regretted it. Only on S&L can one find facts, then truth, then commentary that supports both. Well done.

    • 1sttofight says:

Good God man, Give the sucking up a rest, Geees. ;)

    • sheehanjihad says:

It’s true! Plus, he lets me stay.

    • 1sttofight says:

If he don’t kick me off at least once a week I feel like a slacker. ;)

    • DW says:

He runs a strict site. I learned my lesson after the don’t-leave-a-space-before-a-question-mark episode.
(those fingers never did grow back…)

    • sheehanjihad says:

Yeah! Not to mention capitals where required, proper spacing, paragraphs instead of long diatribes, and punctuation! Plus….no rampant swearing, post on the correct thread, and no use of slurs, threats, violence, or most of the stuff I post. He runs a good ship, and everyone knows it, especially those of us who have been here since 05.

    • Zilla says:

especially those of us who have been here since 05

Yeah, some of us remember when he was DB.

    • jobeth says:

      @DW and Sheehan

You’re right about this being a strict site.

That’s what drew me to the site. None of the nasty liter you find in so many lib blogs (and a few conserv.) and here, you are actually REQUIRED to think! Quite a concept!

A sense of humor is a plus and common sense mandatory (or the pack attacks *grin*)

It’s nice to be around you all! This place and you all are my sanity and my medication against a severe case of political depression!

      Thanks everyone..and esp Steve.

    • Dangerous says:

What I think this thread shows so well is that S&L is more than just a site to get a bit of news. Instead, it’s a chance to meet with like-minded people, a chance to vent about the utter stupidity that often passes for governance, and the chance to learn. The community is really what makes S&L such a great place.

I’ve been a semi-regular reader since the start, and I’ve just recently started posting. As such, I haven’t yet been able to say thank you for this opportunity and thank you to everyone for the common sense commentary.

Mr. Gilbert, please keep this place running until you’re prosecuted for doing so.

  4. 1sttofight says:

    Hoo Ahh

Does this mean we will be able to see what you really look like Steve?

  5. caligirl9 says:

I wish I had the funds to be there with like-minded intelligent people. I don’t think I will be getting my economic stimulus check in time to attend though.

Congrats Steve. I pass your URL out like a hippie passes out acid at a party. *looking around* Did I say that out loud?

  6. spiffyw says:

  7. DGA says:

Well done Steve, AKA DB, cheering you on all the way!

  8. eucher says:

Yay! S&L is a daily must-read. Glad others recognize what a great job you do. Thanks for doing it!

  9. BigOil says:

Kudos Steve. Your site is my daily sanity check.

  10. GuppyNblue says:

For the old media truth and facts are things already figured out. Reporting is the business of reinforcement and telling the rest of us we’re wrong if we don’t agree.

I found this site while surfing for facts and it’s been a sanctuary ever since. It’s great to see the recognition from CPAC and you deserve it Steve. All cheese aside, great job. More than ever before, it takes real work to find the truth.

“May our numbers increase a thousand-fold.” – That should be a universal motto for all conservatives.

  11. clifcrds says:

Congrats SG on well deserved recognition!

Coulter pointing out it was you who exposed Gwen Ifill as not really being an impartial moderator and now the CPAC Award . . . keep it up and next thing you know Obama will be telling Republicans that if they want to get things done they had better quit visiting The Hive!

Although I rarely post – I read all the time. Can’t start my day off without a cup of “joe” and some Buzz from the hive. Keep up the great work!

  12. 11ten1775 says:

    Congrats. Well deserved.

  13. BillK says:

    Congrats, Steve.

Not only for what you do but for giving us the opportunity to help you out when we can.

Give Ann our best, too. :-)

  14. ThreeBus says:

    Congratulations! :-)

  15. 64dodger says:

Congratulations on a job well done. Your site is my required reading for the day.

  16. grits says:

    Congratulations and thank-you.

    “A truthful witness saves lives…” Proverbs 14:25a

  17. JohnMG says:

See what happens when I go to bed early?

Thanks for the site, Steve. I make the rounds of a lot of blogs, but this is “home”. I’ve many friends here who help me keep abreast of the truth. They are what makes this site great.

    Plus, I get to blow off some steam from time to time. ;<l}

  18. CGardner says:

  19. 1republicanscientist says:

I love it. It’s like being at cheers without having to drive home! Seriously, I would be lost in the liberal science abyss without this site and all you do, thanks and congrats!

  20. 12 Gauge Rage says:

Congratulations on this award and many thanks for this blog that lets us all bring things to light, laugh, and just plain vent our rage at the unrelenting imbecility of liberalism. Keep up the great work.

  21. 1laidbackRN says:

Congratulations to Steve and all of those who make this site what it is. Keep up the good work.

  22. Odie44 says:

Congrats SG – to all the hard work and dedication you put into this blog.

And to all the contributors – kudos all around.

  23. Steve says:

Thanks everybody for all the kind words.

But as others have mentioned, your own contributions go a long way toward making this site what it is.

Especially your news tips, which have initiated a number of the stories that I have ‘broken.’

So this award is recognition of your work as well.

    Kudos and thank you.

  24. jobeth says:

I’m impressed altho not a bit surprized! Well deserved Steve! I lurked for quite a while, sopping up all the great wisdom and humor I found here.

You have given us lowly common folk a way to vent and share truth in a interactive forum. No longer do we have to be passive and hope for the truth, we can be a part of it.

  25. Trialdog says:

Congratulations Mr. Gilbert. You earned it. You deserve it.

  26. Reality Bytes says:

Top Ten Political Tributes Steve Gilbert Could Make in His Acceptance Speech:

No. 10: To Mayor Nagen, or as we like to call him Willie Wonka, for finally getting all those school buses repaired in time for election day.

No. 9: To Acorn, who proved that from it a mighty Oaf indeed does grow.

No. 8: To Harry Reid for proving that at least for some, real estate is still a good investment.

No. 7: To Henry Paulson. Henry couldn’t be with us tonight. He’s currently in preparation for his one man show opening on Broadway, “Paul Revere & the Horse He Rode In On”.

No. 6: To Barney Frank for proving that even the severely retarded can find gainful employment if he’s depraved enough.

No. 5: To John McCain. John also couldn’t be with us tonight. He’s in physical therapy after having his hand bit off after having reached across the aisle – again.

No. 4: To Al Franken, who has transformed his successful comedy career into something a pathetic joke.

No. 3: To former NJ Governor, Jim McGreavy, who after declaring himself “A Proud Gay American” sure didn’t play the part by sculking around in dark rest stops on the NJ Turnpike while keeping his “Gay” lifestyle from his loved ones, friends, not to mention the voters.

No. 2: To Barack Hussein Obama, who, uh, uh, You People Are Great!, uh, uhm, I can’t hear myself, where am I?

And the No 1 Person I’d like to Thank:

(I’ll leave this for you guys)

    • Zilla says:

I think No.1 would be The Snag.

    • sheehanjihad says:

I agree with Zilla! The Snag was actually where I got my name all those years ago! She unwittingly gave this site a real boost with her stupidity, her lack of common sense, and that oh so liberal attitude as she was stealing money and supplies from Katrina victims. In a way, The Snag’s legacy is continuing in Washington….but she has got to be number one. I wonder what she’s up to now?…..nah, I could care less.

    • Zilla says:

And Steve, if, during your acceptance speech, you actually use the phrase “The Snag”, I’ll give you a shiny new nickel.

    • Reality Bytes says:

Funny – we used “Snag” in High School, but if you are referring to the newly appointed Snagetary of State Snag, then I’m afraid, that’s just too dark. I mean, with those pants suits

    • sheehanjihad says:

Ok Steve….I promise I wont use foul language or threaten bodily harm to anyone for an entire month if you use the word “Snag” in your speech. It would actually be an honor to all of us old timers to have that word used. It would be hilarious. And “she” would know it was her……oh reality….we are referring to cindy “my son was killed in Iraq” sheehan, not Hillary.

    • DW says:

As I recall, all of the earliest articles were about the snag.
SG (then DB): “this was just a place to stick up notes for future research…”

      Then Katrina hit…
(the rest, as they say, is history…)

    • Kilmeny says:

I remember those days, when SJ’s snag descriptions would cause me to shop for Depends before I read the latest post.

Congratulations, SG, for running such a wonderful place. It’s my go-to blog for everything. And I’m knee-deep in Ann’s new book, where I see you’re mentioned more than once. You deserve all the plaudits.

    • sheehanjihad says:

damn, I wish I would have thought to save the better ones…the archives dont have the replies….yeah, we did have a laugh on her, didnt we? SG, remember that song “Honey” you dared me to write about the snag? oh yeah…those were some good times.

  27. proreason says:

But we already knew what a great site this is or we wouldn’t spend so much time here.

Nobody punctures the arrogant media better than sg.

  28. Icarus says:

    God Bless you S.G!

Thanks for giving us a place to vent, contribute and discover!

  29. RightWinger says:

Congrats S.G! A well deserved award!

If it wasn’t for your site and the great contributions by everybody here, I would almost think the world was over with all this left-wing insanity around us. At least I know when I check in here I will always find common sense, great insight and most importantly, the truth!

Plus the lack of resident trolls is a bonus too! :-)

  30. Barbie says:

  31. DANEgerus says:

    Congratulations Mr. Gilbert.

I am a frequent linker, and I’d comment more frequently, but your insights are so comprehensive I am left with little to add.

    • Dangerous says:

Oops, sorry ’bout the name. First come first serve, though.

Besides, it encourages you to make a pun, which I always enjoy.

  32. Gila Monster says:

Well done Steve, kudos. The honor is richly deserved, CPAC could not have made a better choice.

I add my thanks to all the posters here, your contributions clearly add to the recipe that makes S&L so worthwhile.

  33. Helena says:

Geez, congrats! Maybe Soros will kick in – with some hush money.

  34. sheehanjihad says:

my biggest worry is that Soros will kick in hush money alright, to hush us up for good.

  35. Enthalpy says:

Good job, Steve! You prove each day what the MSM should be, but isn’t. It’s allegiance: the things we hold dear. Thank you for jobs well done.

  36. OneMoreRound07 says:

    Congratulations!! Definitely deserved.

  37. NotStuckOnStupid says:

That is SO awesome, Steve. Its nice to see you recognized for all your hard work over the years.

  38. DEZ says:

    Steve, in all sincerity, Congratulations.

  39. Reality Bytes says:

Here a scene from the Awards Ceremony with SG making one hell of speech!

  40. Melly says:

I am very happy I was directed to this place via the Great One Mark Levin.

  42. Landshark says:

I could have many, many, “nah, nah, nahs” to offer up to some unnamed loOsers but don’t want to spoil the fun of this thread. Besides, making fun of a man who dresses up as a penis and protests in front of the WH or picking on a guy who talks to his pretend pet pig is just so, so…redundant.

Congrats to you, Steve. Please keep the hits coming!

    • NotStuckOnStupid says:

Hey Sharkie, allow me to toss in a couple of “neener neeners” to a certain porcine attorney and his Clown friends, too. ;)

  43. TickTock says:

Congrats, Steve. Great work and moderation. Thank you!

  44. Media_man says:

My beloved Philly Eagles may have choked but at least my favorite website blog is a winner.

  45. AuntieAM says:

Very good, and well-deserved, news. And I concur with CPAC. My news reading always starts with a visit here–news and commentary are the best on the internet in my book.

It was time to register and join the group.
This website is a must read for
    me everyday.
    Thanks Steve and congratulations on
    your award.
There is more “smart power” on this
website than all of those smarty pants
    in Washington, DC!

  48. wardmama4 says:

Congratulations – SG. I will be so stoked to actually be there.

I went to CPAC last year for two reasons – my daughter needed a driver and of course my idol and mentor Ann Coulter was speaking. I saw her speak twice last year. We are headed that way again this year – just confirmed my hotel. So I am glad that we decided to book through Sat. evening. Although last year we were soooooo tired by Sat. evening. Of course we had also gotten up at 0dark early on Friday to see President Bush speak.

So I shall be there again – just look for the older woman with her jaw hitting the ground every time she says – hey isn’t that Michelle Malkin and Oh my, I’m standing next to John Bolton!?! [My daughter hopes that this year I will behave myself a bit better – although I did sacrifice a lot and not wear my T-shirts – except Sat AM when I wore my What Would Ann Coulter Do? T-shirt to get my book signed]

Sweetness & Light – Humor, intelligent discussion and I’m allowed to diss the Perpetual Fake grieving Mother Sheehan – what more can a true conservative want?

  49. dulcimergrl says:

I’m so glad you and this site have been recognized, Steve. As a long-time lurker and sometime contributer, I have to tell you that this site has been responsible for turning me from a middle-of-the-road almost conservative to a real hard-core conservative. It all started when I started doing research on the fishy stuff surrounding Katrina, and I stumbled onto this site via Ann Coulter’s. My eyes have been opened!

  50. wterrier says:

    Congratulations Steve!
Finally had to register to thank you for all the incredible work you do. Been a long time daily visitor to the site and remember when you were DB lol.
Keep up the great work Steve and say hello to Ann. Have fun at CPAC!

  51. Congrats man…your blog has helped me to show the news from a different point of view to so many people and many of them are now regular readers. You help spread the truth and I am so grateful for your efforts. Thank you for your time, and the energy you give to this wonderful source of news.

All the best and my sincerest respect…

  52. Liberals Make Great Speedbumps says:

Congratulations SG. It is nice to see that you are receiving recognition for all of the effort you have put into S&L. May it be the beginning of even greater things for you.

  53. artboyusa says:

Congratulations from me, too. About time, frankly…

  54. trailortrash says:

    congratulations :)

  55. ptat says:

Fantastic and well deserved–major congratulations to SG and the rest of you(us) truth lovers! Maybe the truth does matter, after all, but I am still dubious. Look where we are today–we have a cowardly, corrupt Chicago machine politician for president,a first lady that may or may not be proud of her country today, a tax scofflaw for the head of the IRS, corrupt leadership that caused the financial collapse now in charge of fixing it. Further, we have a docile, compliant “opposition” party afraid of it’s own shadow, corrupt leadership doling out billions of dollars to their friends so they can buy $50 million jets and do nothing for us, and major corruption dominating the entire 50 state political landscape. The inmates are running the asylum. Ann’s book is fantastic and spot on and full of truth and common sense and is a best seller, and yet…..I ask again, does the truth even matter any more? What else can we do to restore a just and prosperous nation?

  56. Steve says:

Thanks again everybody for all the praise. It really is deeply appreciated.

(As for the rest of the 5852 registered members of S&L who have not yet dropped by to give kudos, “name go in book.”)

By the way, please note that I have updated the announcement.

In my excitement I somehow neglected to mention the other luminaries (besides myself) who will be appearing at CPAC:

Gov. Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, Phyllis Schlafly, Gov. Bobby Jindal, Amb. John Bolton, Mitt Romney, David Horowitz…

  57. 1sttofight says:

    Will this be televised?

  58. texaspsue says:

    Congratulations SG! Yee Haw!

This has always been the place to get to the heart of the truth in reporting. It’s about time that this awesome website is honored for it’s true Conservative values and blogs. Thank you SG, for all that you do.

“The truth shall set you free”.

  59. navycopjoe says:

    Congrats Steve, absolutely well deserved!

  60. Alice L. says:

Congrats – and glad that you gave FR a run. They are too much into censorship and favoritism – as well as group think.

  61. 1sttofight says:

You know, CPAC 2010 would be a good place for our oft talked about S&L get together. It would give us a whole year to get our plans and pennies together. What do yall think about it?

  62. bigdog1959 says:

I just started using this site yesterday. I find it very informative and interesting. Congrats and kudos.

  63. rocketman says:
