Taliban Kill 10 on Aid Trip in Afghanistan

By ROD NORDLAND and SHARIFULLAH SAHAK
August 7, 2010

KABUL, Afghanistan — Ten members of a foreign medical team — including six Americans and three women, all doctors and technicians — were shot to death on Thursday in a remote corner of the Hindu Kush in northern Afghanistan, officials confirmed Saturday.

Their aid group, the International Assistance Mission, said they were eye doctors, nurses and technicians, hiking into one of the toughest areas of the country to provide services. But the Taliban, who claimed responsibility, accused them of being spies and Christian missionaries.

More tolerance from the ‘Religion Of Peace.’

“All indications are this is probably our team,” Dirk Frans, I.A.M.’s executive director, said from Kabul on Saturday. “They were on an optometric expedition, running an eye camp.” …

The 12-member medical team included six Americans, a Briton and a German, along with four Afghans, Mr. Frans said…

The workers were found shot to death in a mountainous area of Badakhshan Province, according to the provincial police chief, Aka Noor Kentoz.

The Taliban claim that the aid workers ignored orders from an insurgent patrol to stop and were shot as they tried to flee, according to the spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid, who was reached by cell phone. He said they discovered among their effects a Bible in the Dari language widely spoken in Afghanistan, and maps showing the location of Taliban in northern Afghanistan.

“They were not actually here to provide medication for people but were here for spying,” he said. “The punishment for spying is death.” …

Mr. Kentoz said that local residents told the police that red-bearded gunmen later took the workers prisoner, marched them on foot to a remote area and shot them to death.

It is common in Afghanistan for older men to dye their beards with henna.

AMr. Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman, claimed that they found evidence that the group were American spies and were preaching Christianity. He said that they had maps showing their bases, and a Bible in Dari. Although I.A.M. is a Christian-supported group, Mr. Frans said, it does not engage in proselytizing

Mr. Frans said the incident would not deter the Christian-supported group from their work.

“We have worked here under the king, under the Russians, under the Communists, under the warlords and the Taliban,” he said. “Is it time to quit now?”

Have their ever been a more thoroughly despicable group of people than the Taliban?

They need to be wiped from the face of the earth forever.

I’m sensing that the Afghan people are making steady progress.

They are only a few thousand years away from joining the modern world.

If we’re lucky, with the help of certain moron judges, sharia law can take hold sooner than planned and we can all jump back to the “good ol’ days”.

    ditto, dude.

and has there ever been a more compassionate, caring, giving nation in the history of man than the united states of america???

yet thanks to the traitorous left-wing and their enablers in washington, the people of afghanistan cannot trust us. they literally don’t know if we’ll be there tomorrow.

    they know the taliban will.

Were the 2 of the 12 that lived; 2 of the 4 Afghans?
Didn’t they just hear the Taliban blew up a bus killing 40+ women & children, dozens others injured? Doesn’t Mr. Fran understand when they throw acid, or cut someone’s eyeball out, it is for the glory of their allah?

Not time for you, Mr. Frans, to quit. Drive the bus, next trip.

    YES

    Unions and the Democratic Party.

The most destructive force on earth is not nuclear weapons or crazy Islamo-fascists but the ideology, corruption and evil of everything the Democrats hold most dear. The Taliban are pikers in comparison.

Lately it seems a lot of the liberals who complained about the Iraq War have been selling the Afghan War pretty hard. I wonder if they really have changed their philosophy about war, or if they just feel they have to enhance the president’s credibility.

    • proreason says:

You have to give liberals credit. They stand by their principle.

And that principle is: whatever increases my wealth and power is good and proper.

Iraq was the chosen way for the criminals to discredit Bush and weasel their way back into power. They fully understood that Americans are a people who detest war, and cynically manipulated public opinion to cast an honorable man as satan. Afghanistan was and is a way to pretend that they support National Security. The heroes dying there for a lie mean nothing to the criminals. A thousand more could be dying and they still wouldn’t care.

Other than being useful to hoodwink the rubes, neither Iraq nor Afghanistan has any relationship whatsoever to their ultimate goal.

Yeah, the Afghanistan War was strategically decided to be a political safe zone by and for the regime. By bucking the rabid anti-war nutroots – of which it’s no secret he’s a proud true believer – it’s allowed the media to spin that ‘moderate’ image for independents and uninformed gun-toting wingnuts. What has been clear in Obama’s past dithering on the wars and in fact all National Security matters is that he has no interest in solving them. Everyone’s noted that he shows more hostility to Conservatives than America’s enemies.

Kind of like the economy he wants all these “man caused crises” to be passively managed in decline – with the objective not victory or progress but just so that it never gets so out of control that blame reaches him. The idea is that over time the State Propoganda Network will subvert the narrative of the goals and coax a new social attitude. This strategy was successful in Iraq. Sadly, even with a New Conservative Media, it appears to be working in this case too even though Afghanistan was firmly understood by everyone as the necessary war at one point.

Oh and it’s great to see you again BP!

Hello to proreason, canary, and tranquil night, I hope you’re all doing well!

Yes, political discourse seems to have sunken to such a low point, I have had to take an indefinite hiatus from debating with liberals (and some conservatives, for that matter). Lately I’ve been enjoying thinking about culture more. But of course once in a while you have to jump into the fray.

  7. canary says:

war? what war? Obama ended it. Our soldiers are only dying over there to serve tea & provide humanity services. If they are shot at by a Taliban, but he throws down his gun, they can’t even shoot back then. If they run into Taliban planting an IED, they have to try and catch them alive and hand them over to Afghanistan police who just let them go behind our backs.
