Taliban Within 60 Miles Of Pakistan Capital

From Iran’s Press TV:

More Pakistani cities fall into Taliban hand

Wed, 22 Apr 2009

Pakistan’s government confirms that Taliban militants, armed with heavy weapons, have taken control of new areas near the capital Islamabad.

Islamabad’s Interior Ministry on Wednesday said that the Taliban moved out of the troubled northwestern Swat Valley and were now in control of Buner district — only 100 km (60 miles) from Islamabad.

Members of a local tribal militia confronted the insurgents earlier this month when they started infiltrating the district.

However, the resistance subsided in following days in the face of reluctance on the part of government forces to stop the insurgents.

Also, local administration in the captured district noted that the insurgents were dramatically moving toward surrounding areas as well.

"They [the militants] are fast gaining territory and have established checkpoints and dug bunkers at strategic locations in the mountains," said an official of the local administration in Buner district.

Taliban have already set up checkpoints, occupied mosques and have looted offices of non-governmental organizations in the volatile region.

Moreover, the militants ransacked several government offices triggering the official vehicles to drive away, sources said

This is while a so-called peace agreement was expected to establish Taliban rule in the region to end the Taliban insurgency.

Last Monday, President Asif Ali Zardari and lawmakers — under pressure by the militants — agreed to introduce a harsh Taliban judicial system in the troubled Malakand division, comprising of six north-western districts including Swat.

The Taliban, however, have not disarmed and are instead trying to extend their military control in the area.

Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday emphasized that the deal with the Taliban was conditional. "If peace is not restored, one can rethink and revisit the agreement."

The Taliban have repeatedly hinted that they would take their war to the capital and other major cities of Pakistan. The Taliban are now moving from the northwestern region into the Punjab and Sindh provinces as well.

President Zardari and Interior Ministry Chief Rehman Malik have repeatedly warned that Taliban want to take over Pakistan.

Surrendering to the Taliban in Swat does not seemed to have worked out too well, after all.

Meanwhile, as we have previously noted, back in 2004 Mr. Obama said this, via the Chicago Tribune:

Obama would consider missile strikes on Iran

By David Mendell, Tribune staff reporter

September 25, 2004

As for Pakistan, Obama said that if President Pervez Musharraf were to lose power in a coup, the United States similarly might have to consider military action in that country to destroy nuclear weapons it already possesses. Musharraf’s troops are battling hundreds of well-armed foreign militants and Pakistani tribesmen in increasingly violent confrontations.

Obama said that violent Islamic extremists are a vastly different brand of foe than was the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and they must be treated differently.

“With the Soviet Union, you did get the sense that they were operating on a model that we could comprehend in terms of, they don’t want to be blown up, we don’t want to be blown up, so you do game theory and calculate ways to contain,” Obama said. “I think there are certain elements within the Islamic world right now that don’t make those same calculations.

“… I think there are elements within Pakistan right now – if Musharraf is overthrown and they took over, I think we would have to consider going in and taking those bombs out, because I don’t think we can make the same assumptions about how they calculate risks.”

So what is he waiting for?

You know, when I agreed with Biden for the first and last time in my life – I really didn’t think so many rogue nations and terrorists would test Bambi, so dangerously, so soon.

We are close to Day 100 of this dismal and pathetic regime and our enemies are “doubling down”.

Good thing the Pakistani’s don’t have nukes, huh?

    • canary says:

Pakistan has had nukes for some time, supposedly supplied by China. A 2nd enrichment plant is located only 6 miles from Islamabad.

Nobody really knows why Obama visited Pakistan when he was in college, or how many times.

But aside from that, for those wondering why he doesn’t act now, the question is only relevant when it is based on the premise that he wants what is best for this country.

ProReason, I didn’t know about these visits.
Not sure what you mean. That Obama wants what’s best for Pakistan? I think the bible in old and new testiment points to the beast will come out and kill a woman leader, in Pakistan, and then destruction will come worse than ever. Course the bible is very hard to understand. Sometimes, I google the old city names, or group of people’s names, rivers, and old maps, then compare them to today, and that where I felt it meant the beast will come out of Pakistan. And then the end of the new testiment has revalations, and then it really get’s creepy. Anyways, recently, I’m finding stuff from that wikipedia, but I do realise it’s not official, but saves time in figuring out who and what the people in the bible are as in today’s time. So, many people say things in bible coming true, namely destruction in the middle-east. On the good news, things end well in the end. But, it’s gonna get bad according to the bible. It’s so important to pray. Even Scientists that don’t believe in Christianity believe in the power of prayer. They keep doing more tests, and finding out, it’s not just postitive thinking either. They had people pray for sick people they didn’t know. The sick people that were being prayed for didn’t know they were being prayed for, and the ones prayed for healed faster and did better. Yes God Can. Yes God Can

Canary, when people wonder why he doesn’t act to prevent the Taliban from siezing control of Pakistan and therefore it’s nuclear capability, they only wonder because they think the POTUS is naturally concerned about US national security, and therefore concerned about nuclear proliferation.

But The Moron isn’t going to take any action, and the reason is that he doesn’t give a hoot about U.S. national security. What he cares about is himself, and how he is perceived in the world. And allowing the Taliban and later Iran to acquire nuclear weapons will increase his popularity world-wide. In the U.S. he will scoff that it was inevitable. If there is a nuclear attack, he will claim that it was caused by the policies of Bush and Bush’s predecessors who antagonized the rest of the world. This is all mapped out in advance.

He HATES America and what our country stands for.

Even many rock solid conservatives think the opposite……think naturally think that since he is the POTUS, that he must have America’s interests at heart. They are dead wrong. Examine every action. There is no underlying concern for you or I or the people like us (with more talent than me, certainly) who have made this the greatest country ever.

As Rush says, his goal is REVENGE on America. He want to punish you and I for what we have done to his “constituencies”.

He is much much more dangerous than even his opponents think because his deceipt is so extreme that he has fooled even them into thinking he is just more liberal than usual. He isn’t just a more liberal Clinton, he is the most extreme and dangerous person in the world for the last 80 years.

There was a picture circulated a while back with Obama holding a book called “A Post American World” by Fareed Zakaria… basically a Muslim look at a world without America as a super power. CNN had the picture, except they cropped out the book and were salivating over the President looking “casual” with an unbuttoned shirt. I think SG posted it a while back. America chose a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

  6. RightWinger says:

Gee, who didn’t see this coming. Well I mean besides Lil’ Barry, Shillary and anybody else in his cabinet.

Though my own personal prediction was that Pakistan would eventually fall later in the year, looks like the Taliban will have full control by June. They got themselves a hell of a deal. They trade up Afghanistan temporarily in order to claim Pakistan and it’s nukes in exchange.

Lil’ Barry shouldn’t fret though. He has taken the high moral ground, so the Taliban will not allow the nukes to get smuggled out of the country to terrorists waiting to smuggle them across the Mexican border.

    God help us.

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

He’d better get over there and apologize quick, before all the good apologies are taken.

  7. Colonel1961 says:

But the good news is, if they do get their hands on nukes, we’ll be able to torture somebody to find out where they are. Oh, wait…

    • RightWinger says:

Yeah, we can’t because they handed over Jack Bauer to the Hague to stand trial for human rights abuses. Fear not though, Perez Hilton will question the terrorists about their feelings on gay marriage and if they do not respond favorably, he’ll put out a video calling them bigots and homophobes. That will teach them a lesson they will never forget!

You can’t stamp out this kind of fanaticism in Pakistan until you get to the root of it all. Until they clamp down on all these Madrasas poisoning young minds with hatred for anything western, nothing will ever change. Nature abhors a vacuum. You get rid of one hardened terrorist, there’s another one willing and able to step in and fill the void.

  9. canary says:

Obama has to take blame. After Obama’s sent Kerry over there to give Pakistan over 5 billion, and more billions promised to paid out, the Taliban just happens to increase overnight.
Remember, Obama caved into Pakistan’s leader, and put the military brass on cease fire, right after we accomplished and inflicted some heavy damage on the Taliban on the border. Obama sat there inspite of our military cries that the taliban were restrengthening, and regrouping. Yet, Obama had to send John Kerry over there to have tea and biscuits while he handed 5 billion dollars to the Pakistan leader, and the continous promising of billions more, over a period of a few years.
I will never forget Pakistan dancing in the streets after 9/11, and never understood any dealing or trust in Pakistan. And I have for over a year, that Pakistan is likely to be the first to set off a nuke. And more troops being sent there, just worrys me, with the prospect of Pakistan and Afganistan, and I will never ever believe Obama respects the troops. They are the breed of men and women that are a threat to Obama. They are the thorn that threatens Obama’s megalomaniac ego, that small voice in his big head that tells him, he can’t hold a candle our American soldiers fighting to save this country, and fighting for a no good unAmerican president who hates America.

Funny that Pervez Musharref was overthrown in a coup by the present appeasers, and Obama instead of demanding missile strikes against Pakistan supported the coup to oust him.

The inaction and silence surrounding these circumstances speak volumes. I’ve long felt that o-blah-blah is a “Trojan Horse”. And isn’t he the fellow that wrote something like “if the political winds were to shift, I’d be in line with my muslim brothers”?

His utter failure to protect and defend this country .. his visible display to be amongst the poorest cheerleaders (much less presidents) of this country .. are convincing evidence of his likelihood of being that “Trojan Horse”.

Or, .. he’s simply that inept. Or, .. both. Dangerous, dangerous circumstances.

    • proreason says:

Biden’s “test” which we “may not like” is to stand by idly as nuclear weapons are acquired by the Axis of Evil and/or Terrorists.

It would have been easy to predict as long as a year ago that unless the U.S. interferes, Pakistan would be taken over by Muslim fundamentalists. That’s how Biden could make his statement with such confidence, and also to know that the country wouldn’t think it was a great thing to do.

  14. GnuCarSmell says:

The emerging image of Obama as a vacuous guru of phony moral equivalency is becoming increasingly undeniable. Al-Qaeda and the Taliban must be dancing for joy in their good fortune at his election. It was predictable they now feel emboldened to advance in Pakistan.

I believe it was Reagan who noted that “weakness is provocative.” Not only that, weakness is a recruiting tool for terrorists.

  15. ptat says:

  16. RightWinger says:

FOX & Friends just played a clip of Shillary saying that the Pakistan Govt is giving up on its citizens and if they want to turn this around, they need to start providing better services!

So the simple solution to eliminating the Taliban all this time was for the Govt to provide services to its citizens? Or does this mean that the Taliban is really a rights advocacy group like Acorn and they are just fighting for the rights of people to get basic services like trash removal and running water?

    • Liberals Demise says:

They are too smart for that kool-aid Hopey / Changey crap. They want to get more “BANG” for our bucks!! They are gonna make a black market deal for some ICBMs’ to hook to the nukes they will relinquish from Pakistan!

Batk/here is photos of Obama holding the book A Post-American World, written by a muslim at link below. .

Pro, you don’t have to convince me of his hatred toward America. This is why he was so up beat with other countries that hate us. He was thrilled to be with his own kind.
I looked up some articles of Obama visiting Pakistan during college Apparently, he has several friends, one that did a lot of drugs. One article says
Obomi’s mother worked in Pakistan for approx 5 years.
Blood is thicker that water. And even when it comes to dead beat fathers.
Thanks guys for the heads up

Photos of Obama holding book on subject after America falls. I guess he read it for enjoyment, and to gain knowledge.

  18. Rusty Shackleford says:

Lately I have been entertaining the odd notion that our purveyor of fairness, the elected but somehow morally inert dweeb of self-awareness in the post racial era, is both terrified and enamored by the Taliban and other terrorist groups. Kind of the way America is by the Cosa Nostra.

It seems to fit that he wants to feel the power the terrorists have when they are “doing stuff” (I use that phrase to amplify how a kid would see it, and thus, be impressed while lacking the facilities to indicate exactly WHY he is impressed).

And, as I stated before, he is not keen on the military because they represent to him a genuine, organized, traditional group that holds up a morality that both confuses and scares him. He seems to understand random, though ruthlessly exercised acts of violence that seem to have a point, versus tactically engaged forces, well structured and organized.

To put it simply, like going to the movies and watching the underdog prevail.

Sadly, I think this is how wee Barry actually sees the events of the last 9+ years with regard to terrorism. He sees the United States and all evolved Western nations that are familiar with table manners, as the bad guys. His insult to Great Britain spoke more than volumes to me in that regard.

His “underdog” is, of course the terrorists who are (in his mind) right to do what they do because “The West” has for decades, if not centuries, kept them down. Again, thanks to an education by the very angry homegrown terrorists who raised him.

And, as Rush has pointed out, he wants to punish all who adhere to the centuries-evolved Western methods, which, by the way, are not just “Western”. We adopted the economic system we did that goes back well before Roman times, has ancient Egyptian influence and Byzantine elements, as well as Persian, Chinese and so on. Money paid for goods and/or services rendered. We built a nation on that but we’re not the first to do so.

But in wee Barry’s mind, somehow that structure is bad. It keeps the have-nots down somehow. But like the walking non-sequitur that he is, he only got half the story and he grew up unwilling to listen to the other half…the good half of capitalism and how hard work and dedication and honesty works for this nation and our system of laws and government by-and-large works to that end.

But he was only taught the failures. Yes, our system is slow. It’s designed that way. But you can’t fix it by eliminating its many intricate and necessary parts. Sure, a watch can work without a minute-hand. But simplifying it to have only an hour hand isn’t the answer. In fact, in most cases it makes things worse.

So the end result is a 47 year old socially dysfunctional and historically dys-educated president with a Congress that’s more than happy to humor him with his poorly thought out ideas on how government should work. He would no more adhere to the Founding Father’s ideas than I would listen to a rap CD.

And, the real icing on the cake, again, is that he’s black. What better way to get the largest segment of have-nots out there to vote for a misanthrope like Obama? It worked. Perhaps the biggest bait-and-switch job the world has ever seen. And, catching a glimpse of (gag) Smiley last night….the blacks are STILL in love with this guy and blind to all reason, sensibility and logic. They think that America did the right thing solely based on the man’s skin color alone.

    Now who’s racist?

    • proreason says:

Rusty, you pose an interesting question that I don’t think we’ve discussed on S&L very much: Why is the “morally inert dweeb …in the post racial era, is both terrified and enamored by the Taliban and other terrorist groups.”

My view is that there are two answers, one for the Basement dwelling libwits, and a separate answer for OSoros and his oligarchical puppet-masters.

For your normal run-of-the-mill, frothing=at-the-mouth, hate-filled, deviant, baloney-brained ultraliberal nitwit, it is simply a case, inmo, of getting back at daddy, who dared to correct the precious precocious little nascent dweeb during early childhood, before mommy put a stop to it. That explains all of your 60’s radicals, btw, except for the males who pounced on the chance for unrestricted sex. (In the latter case, those males are now usually conservatives.).

For OSoros, the answer is different. He and his handlers are predators who play the dweebs like violins. That’s part of the reason they shamelessly suck-up to dictators of every ilk.

But the more important and unstated purpose for OSoros is that his eqo is a super-nova, and he sees himself as the saviour of the PLANET, not just the USA. He sees the Taliban, Iran, Muslims, et al, as constituencies to be woo’ed.
