Ex-professor jailed in Jihad case

A US judge has sentenced a Palestinian former university professor to another year and a half in jail for raising money for Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Sami al-Arian was sentenced to four years nine months but got credit for time already served.

He signed a plea deal in April and admitted giving support to Palestinian Islamic Jihad, designated a terrorist group by the State Department.

Mr Arian will be deported after serving his sentence.

The US says Islamic Jihad is responsible for the deaths of over 100 people in the Middle East, including American citizens.

Arian was a computer science professor in south Florida until his arrest and says he has been implicated in the case because of his political opinions against Israel and his campaign for Palestinian rights.

He says he has never advocated violence against others and denies any connection to terrorists.

Arian agreed to a plea bargain even though a jury failed to convict him of any of the 17 charges against him during a six-month trial last year.

His family said he agreed to the deal to get out of prison and end their suffering.

A US resident, Mr Arian was born in Kuwait to Palestinian parents, and has lived in the US for 30 years.

He was one of the founders of a think-tank, the World Islam and Studies Enterprise, and a charity, the Islamic Committee for Palestine, formed in the late 1980s and 1990s to support an independent Palestinian state.

Still, it's scant justice.

Hopefully he will be deported to Israel.
