Thank Obama For His Foresight In OBL Raid

From an unstinting in their praise New York Times:

U.S. Braced for Fights With Pakistanis in Bin Laden Raid

By Eric Schmitt, Thom Shanker and David E. Sanger

WASHINGTON — President Obama insisted that the assault force hunting down Osama bin Laden last week be large enough to fight its way out of Pakistan if confronted by hostile local police officers and troops, senior administration and military officials said Monday.

Is there nothing that Mr. Obama left to chance? Apparently, Mr. Obama is a military genius. On top of being a genius about the law and economics and green energy and race relations – and so many other subjects.

In revealing additional details about planning for the mission, senior officials also said that two teams of specialists were on standby: One to bury Bin Laden if he was killed, and a second composed of lawyers, interrogators and translators in case he was captured alive.

The first team of ‘specialists’ had to be expert in all the rituals for a Muslim burial. The second team had to be expert on all of the rituals of the ACLU. (Not that the Obama administration would have any problems with those.)

That team was set to meet aboard a Navy ship, most likely the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson in the North Arabian Sea.

Clearly they didn’t want to interrogate Bin Laden in any nation’s territory. So why not use Guantanamo?

Mr. Obama’s decision to increase the size of the force sent into Pakistan shows that he was willing to risk a military confrontation with a close ally in order to capture or kill the leader of Al Qaeda.

Again, the media is doing everything in their power to build up the dangers of the raid.

Such a fight would have set off an even larger breach with the Pakistanis than has taken place since officials in Islamabad learned that helicopters filled with members of a Navy Seals team had flown undetected into one of their cities, and burst into a compound where Bin Laden was hiding.

This attack was staged right next to a police station and the less than half a mile from military base that housed 120,00 soldiers. It’s safe to say that the Pakistanis were either cooperating or they are very heavy sleepers.

One senior Obama administration official, pressed on the rules of engagement for one of the riskiest clandestine operations attempted by the C.I.A. and the military’s Joint Special Operations Command in many years, said: “Their instructions were to avoid any confrontation if at all possible. But if they had to return fire to get out, they were authorized to do it.”

The planning also illustrates how little the administration trusted the Pakistanis as they set up their operation. They also rejected a proposal to bring the Pakistanis in on the mission.

If Pakistan is not our ally then why do we send them so many billions of taxpayer dollars?

Under the original plan, two assault helicopters were going to stay on the Afghanistan side of the border waiting for a call if they were needed. But the aircraft would have been about 90 minutes away from the Bin Laden compound.

About 10 days before the raid, Mr. Obama reviewed the plans and pressed his commanders as to whether they were taking along enough forces to fight their way out if the Pakistanis arrived on the scene and tried to interfere with the operation.

That resulted in the decision to send two more helicopters carrying additional troops. These followed the two lead Black Hawk helicopters that carried the actual assault team. While there was no confrontation with the Pakistanis, one of those backup helicopters was ultimately brought in to the scene of the raid when a Black Hawk was damaged while making a hard landing

All we can say is thank goodness for Mr. Obama’s foresight. You really have to wonder why none of the other people involved thought of this. Probably they just don’t have his vast experience in such matters.

Still, if Mr. Obama is such a brilliant military planner, how come he didn’t tell the troops to take along a tape measure?

American forces were under strict orders to avoid engaging with any Pakistani forces that responded to the commotion at the Bin Laden compound, senior administration officials said.

If a confrontation appeared imminent, there were contingency plans for senior American officials, including Admiral Mullen, to call their Pakistani counterparts to avert an armed clash.

But when he reviewed the plans, Mr. Obama voiced concern that this was not enough to protect the troops on the mission, administration officials said.

The Times is going to keep repeating this until we break down and believe them.

In planning for the possible capture of Bin Laden, officials decided they would take him aboard a Navy ship to preclude battles over jurisdiction.

The plan, officials said, was to do an initial interrogation for any information that might prevent a pending attack or identify the location of other Qaeda leaders.

For someone who had to be drug off the golf course so he could give the okay because most likely he didn’t know a thing about it, the Slimes is making the Boy King sound like Von Clausewitz.

I’m sure in a very abstract way Barry the Bumbler probably knew that they were planning to try to get Osama but as far as actively being involved in the planning and execution of the raid, in a word, NO. For one thing if it had gone completely in the dumper like the raid on Tehran long ago I’m sure Panetta and Gates would have joined the multitude of others under the bus. Barry had what is known as deniability to keep himself from being splattered by the fecal material that would have hit the rapidly rotating blades of the air moving device just in case it failed. Of course since it didn’t the media spin machine has to make sure we all know how great he is.

      So what you’re saying, RotP, is that either way the shit is still hitting the fan, so to speak. ;-}

either way the shit is still hitting the fan
Yup, and it’s BULL-Shit and we’re the ones being relentlessly splattered. Every day. By the end of the week, they’ll be pointing out something shiny on the other side of the playground to take our mind off of being covered in fan splattered crap.

John, the difference is the Lame Stream Media is shoving the bovine excrement on top of us in an attempt to bury us instead of just spreading it around a bit.

Pretty soon they’ll be writing songs about how Barry the Bumbler single-handed took down Al Qaeda and the Tal-i-ban too. Soon to replace Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed and John Henry in our mythology.

What with Spike thinking of gazillions of details that the 30-year military guys just couldn’t conceive of and all that, it’s a wonder he didn’t think about what to tell the world after he heroically assassinated obamica’s public enemy #1.

  3. tranquil.night says:

So Al Jazeera was actually right and the ‘correction’ by Reuters was a lie made to portray Spike as gutsy Decider in Chief? What a shock.

The only foresight that Spike lucks into is in those extremely rare moments when his personal and political interests actually align with the Right Choice.

…..”And they thought that Mr. Bin Laden would just give up that information without any ‘inducements’ whatsoever?…..”

That was the second-last thing that went through bin Laden’s mind. The last thing was a 7.62mm round!

This is all a bunch of malarky. There is no way military planners were going to rely solely on the two rotary platforms, or linger 90 minutes away. Nor is there any way those “backup” helicopters had troops on board. Otherwise, there would have been no room for those who were grounded with the failure of the one bird.

I have ridden plenty of Blackhawks, and there is NO way 12 additional men are climbing in and sitting on the laps of those already there, that and with all their gear. That, and one or two additional bodies (we are not hearing much about this supposed 2nd body/person taken, hmmmm.) The only way that happens is if the original raiders only had 4-6 guys on board each one, which is again in direct conflict with the Won’s brilliant planning to send in a beefed-up raid team. This is so thinly devised, non-military lackeys trying to invent more participation and brilliant leadership as questions arise….what was that Spanish word again?
