The Hill Decries The Lack Of Osama Bounce

From The Hill:

One year later, Obama team looks for lasting bin Laden bounce

By Ian Swanson and Jordy Yager – 04/30/12

The killing of Osama bin Laden is undoubtedly a crowning achievement in President Obama’s tenure at the White House.

Which is a bit ironic insofar as Obama ran as an anti-war candidate. And that the killing of Bin Laden was nothing more than carrying out Bush’s policy. And that Time Magazine has gotten hold of a memo which debunks the claims that Obama directed the mission or made any ‘gutsy calls.’

Yet one year after the president ordered the successful mission that resulted in the death of the nation’s number one enemy, it’s unclear how much of a boost Obama will receive in the fall.

As ebullient crowds filled the streets surrounding the White House in the late hours of May 1, 2011, it was easy to think the killing of the mastermind behind the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil would ensure Obama a second term.

Especially since every news media report and every elite pundit told us it would ensure Obama a second term.

Indeed, the president’s poll numbers jumped on the news, with 56 percent saying they approved of Obama’s overall performance as president in an ABC News/Washington Post poll on May 3, 2011. That was a jump of 9 percent.

Which, in reality, is not much of a jump.

But Obama’s bin Laden bump faded almost as quickly as voter attention turned back to the economy. Obama’s approval rating reached 57 percent in the ABC/Post poll in May, but by June had faded back down to 47 percent, trailing away more quickly than the crowds that came to the White House.

How fickle the American public is. Apparently, they are concerned more about having jobs and food on the table than Obama’s gutsy call to kill a washed up and out of touch terrorist.

Polls now suggest Obama has a slim lead over presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney in an election that is likely to be razor-tight, and seems equally likely to focus on the economy and not national security

Even if the focus were on national security, Obama would still lose. After all, look at the Middle East, thanks to his support of ‘Arab Spring.’ Look at our national security in general, thanks to his giving away our missile defense system.

Nonetheless, Obama’s campaign team has touted bin Laden’s death in the days leading up to the anniversary to remind the public of the president’s decision, and to contrast Obama’s leadership on national security with Romney.

Again, Bush was relentlessly attacked for even including a few seconds of 9/11 imagery in one campaign ad.

The most notable part of the push is a web video that suggested Romney would not have made the decision to target bin Laden…

In arguing that Romney would not have made the same decision, the Obama campaign has pointed to a 2007 interview with The Associated Press in which Romney said: “It’s not worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person.”

Which, of course, is true. Besides, Romney was addressing Obama’s claim that the war in Iraq was ‘distraction.’ And that all we needed to do was kill Bin Laden and that would end Muslim terrorism.

But it is clear it hasn’t. Even though some in the State Department are claiming the war on terror is over.

Republicans have used the web video and criticism of Romney to accuse Obama of crass opportunism. Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the video attacking Romney was “a cheap political attack ad,” “the height of hypocrisy,” and a “pathetic political act of self-congratulation.” …

Romney’s campaign wants the election to be about the economy, but has sought to counter-punch on bin Laden by arguing that Obama is using a moment of national unity to pull the country apart.

It’s a part of a larger argument that positions Obama as the divider-in-chief, something Romney’s campaign has also used in the fight over the economy, in which it often argues the president is engaging in class warfare.

“The killing of Osama bin Laden was a momentous day for all Americans and the world, and Governor Romney congratulated the military, our intelligence agencies, and the president,” Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Friday. “It’s sad to see the Obama campaign seek to use an event that unified our country to once again divide us, in order to try and distract voters’ attention from the failures of his administration."

The White House though maintains that they have handled bin Laden’s death appropriately in the run-up to the anniversary.

“I think the way that we’ve handled it represents exactly the balance we need to strike,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said to reporters last week.

Once again note the conspicuous absence of any mention of the way Bush was pounced upon in 2004. All of which is conveniently forgotten now.

Obama will not mark the anniversary with any public events on Monday, but he did sit down with NBC last week in the situation room to mark the date. That interview will air Wednesday night, ensuring more media coverage about a decision the White House hopes voters will think about when they go to the polls in November.

According to experts like Dana Perino, this will mark the first time that the news media has been allowed in the White House ‘situation room.’

But the Obama campaign is not exploiting this. They are not spiking the ball again. No way.

Usama didn’t bounce, he splattered, then leaked a bit, and finally splashed.

  2. P. Aaron says:

Obama & Osama are both waterlogged. Not much bounce there.

  3. River0 says:

Everyone with a brain knows Obama would have avoided taking out Osama (very odd, isn’t it, that those names are so similar?) if there had been a political price to pay for it. Everyone who can think knows he is a craven opportunist doing the most expedient thing to gain more power. And if you’re paying attention, as we are, you know he took something like 16 DAYS to make the decision to take Bin Laden out.

Rush is right, Romney will win in a landslide.

Obama wrote that in 2002 “we drove the Taliban government out of Kabul in just over a month; Al Qaeda operatives fled or were captured or killed.”

Obama also wrote credit to the entire world, especially “In Cairo local mosques offered prayers of sympathy” in regards to 9/11, for Bushes job.

Not only did Obama write the problem in Afghanistan was resolved within a month “- steady, measued, and accomplished with minimal casualties. Obama believed at this early point, Bush should have focused on building
    new International relations, etc.

“This new blueprint never arrived. Instead what we got was an assortment of outdated policies from eras gone by, dusted off, slapped together, and with the new labels affixed. Reagan’s Evil Empire” was now the “Axis of Evil.” ….” Obama 2006 The Audacity of Hope

I won’t write the absolute lies he wrote about Bush’s plans to take over the world. Unbelievable the irony that Obama’s accusations defines his own actions.

Obama changed it to Afghanistan is our friend and partners to the “Arab Spring Era” How will they write this in history books? During Arab Spring Era 2011- present.. blah blah.

U.S. Navy Seals are now slamming the President for using them in bid to take credit for bin Laden killing during election campaign. Yet, The President tells everyone to keep things quiet so as to NOT stir up the Muslim world that could incite riots and American troops deaths.

Bottom line? Obama using the words ” I ” and “we” as though he was a part of the operation is laughable. He calculated the political gain from saying yes to capping that muzzy douche…figured he could use it in the fall…and thus you see him actually intimating that he had something to do with it.

He said ” Uh, ok I guess”….and that was his role. Period. NAVY SEALS killed that germ….intelligence assets obama wanted shut down, interrogations that he decried, military units he is now gutting with glee, THEY did the job in spite of that embarrassment….not because of him.

Bin Laden’s death was because of a superb group of dedicated American soldiers who didn’t give a rat’s ass how it looked on television….they shot the bastard because it was their mission. THEIRS…not oboomboom’s. So everytime that stump blows out that I did this, I did that it makes me vomit.

He is like our current quarter…supposed to be silver…but is worthless tin.

Gee, was it only a year ago when BARACK ‘BUCK’ OBAMA, American Action Hero, made the gutsy decision that other people should risk their lives to help his re-election campaign? Wow, how time flies. Let’s journey back as BARACK ‘BUCK’ OBAMA leads his elite team of Seals on a deadly, bullet riddled, action soaked, danger filled “Flight into Dangerousness”!

A flight of blacked out Blackhawks screamed across the night sky. “AAAAAIIIEEEEEE!” they screamed. “AAAARRRGGGHHH!”

Aboard the lead chopper Commander Barack “Buck” Obama, American Action Hero, briefed his team of Seals.

“Listen up, you hard chargin’, tough as nails, bunch of combat happy GI Joes and Janes” growled Buck. “This mission will be plenty tough. Some of us – well, some of you, actually – might not come back. But that’s okay, because tonight its payback time. We’re going to find the world’s most dangerous terrorist and …take… him… down. Hoo rah!”

The highly trained Seals barked deafeningly and clapped their flippers with enthusiasm. Some honked old fashioned squeeze bulb auto horns, some beat little drums. Others pretended to push tiny brooms around the deck. Buck Obama smiled with grim satisfaction. They were a good team. He knew they’d perform.

Buck checked his equipment. Gleam of manly perspiration – check. Weirdly distorted pumped up anatomy – check. Half chewed stogie –check. Strategically torn tee shirt – check. Crisscrossed ammo bandoliers – check. Bandana – check. Ray Ban sunglasses – check…he could hardly see a thing.

Soon the lights of Osamabababad lay glittering ahead of them, like tiny jewels strung across blackness. The pilot’s voice crackled in Buck’s headphones. ”Approaching target, sir. Time to target…four, three, two…go, go, go!”

Buck sprang for the chopper door and hit his head hard because no one had opened it yet. “Ouch!” he cursed.

“Sorry, sir” mumbled the crew chief, tugging at the handle. “After you…”

Buck checked that his bandana was still in place and his hair wasn’t messed up and he jumped out and raced through the swirling dust raised by the chopper blades. His team of elite Seals followed; barking, smacking their flippers loudly and balancing red rubber balls on their cute little noses.

The enemy fell back in surprise, as well they might. Buck dove inside one of the buildings and raced up the stairs…he kicked down the first door he came to and levelled his M4 at the shadowy figure within, who was bent over a tattered map of Russia. Buck’s keen eyesight, honed by years of training, took in the toothbrush moustache, the lock of hair falling over one eye, the natty double breasted jacket – it was Hitler!

“Donnerwetter Himmel Gott schweinhund!” screamed the crazed Fuhrer, raising his Luger. Too slow! Buck opened fire and the Reich Chancellor’s term in office finally ended in a bloody sprawl backwards across the smoking room that was now his coffin.

“Pardon my lead, Fritz” growled tough as nails Buck Obama, slapping a new magazine into his smoking weapon. “I was only following orders”. A sudden flash of light dazzled him and he jumped aside as the sizzling light sabre carved the air.

“Darth Vader – you!” gasped Buck.

“Indeed! The Force is strong with you, young Obama” hissed the Dark Lord. “But stronger still is the power of the Dark Side!”

Darth raised his light sabre to strike and Buck emptied a full mag into him. BANGBANGBANGBANG…the sound effects roared and Darth staggered backwards, sparks flying from his armor. DOINKDOINKDOINKDOINK….a riddled Darth Vader crashed to the floor and his gleaming helmet rolled uselessly into a corner.

Buck looked down at his vanquished foe. “Buck” gasped the dying Darth. “I am your …father”.

“That’s entirely possible” conceded Buck. “Given the murky nature of my family origins and certain, um, still unanswered questions about my early years. Mom kind of got around in the old days, if you know what I mean”.

“You’re…aak…telling me“ reminisced Darth. “She…aak… went like a…train” he gasped before he finally croaked.

Two down! But the biggest target was still at large. Buck could hear the distant honking and tooting as the Seals engaged the enemy. Suddenly a tall figure loomed from the shadows and thrust a young woman toward the startled Buck.

“Take my wife – please!” snarled Osama Bin Laden.

Buck raised his weapon to fire but something made his finger freeze on the trigger. Sure, Buck Obama was tough but Buck Obama was compassionate too. This woman was an unarmed civilian, a mere pawn in a deadly game beyond her understanding. He could not just kill her in cold blood so he shot her in the leg instead. Pity had stayed Buck’s hand.

“It’s a pity I’m out of ammo” fumed Buck, squeezing the trigger over and over and hearing nothing but snap snap snap…

“So, Buck Obama” boomed the deep voice of Bin Laden. “We meet at last…for the endgame!”

“Brother, let’s talk!” squeaked Buck, frantically searching for another magazine and finding nothing on him except cans of spray-on sweat. “I’m sure we can meet without any pre-conditions to look frankly at ways to move forward on some points of mutual interest and concern!”

“Indeed; such as the imminent killing of you… by me”. Osama held up a full M4 mag. “Is it this for which you seek? Hahahahahaha. Now you shall know death, accursed infidel!”

“You’re like so totally unfair!” wailed Buck, real sweat breaking out all over him this time. “My faith is a private matter and…” Buck noticed that Osama was frantically trying to load his M4 mag into an AK47 for which, entirely predictably, it did not fit. “Curse this stupid thing” muttered the furious jihadi.

    That looks hopeful, thought Buck.

    “Honk! Honk!”

Buck whirled around at the sudden noise. In the doorway was Ensign Jo Jo, one of his best young Seals. Jo Jo tossed Buck a pistol with one quick flip of her cute little nose and Buck Obama spun around and shot Osama right in the eye.

Or that’s what he would have done, if he hadn’t left the safety on, so Jo Jo did it for him and Osama dropped like a basket of spilled laundry.

“YES!” shouted Buck Obama, American Action Hero, pumping the air with his fist. “Yes! Did you see that? Huh? Did you? Oh, man! Quick, take my picture! Now take another one! Wow! I did it! I did it! I did it all by myself! I gave the orders! I ran the mission! I did everything and nobody helped me! Nobody!”

Jo Jo the Seal looked up in surprise. Huh?

“In your face, Romney! I did it and all the credit and all the glory and the second term in office belongs to me, me, meeee…”

“Barack! Barack! BARACK! Wake up!” snapped Michelle, jabbing the president furiously in the ribs. “Wake up! You’re self-mythologizing in your sleep again!”

“Huh? Wha? Where am I? Oh – just the White House” mumbled the befuddled POTUS. “Sorry, honey, but I was having the best dream…”

“Save it for the campaign trail” snapped Michelle, rolling over. “And let me get some sleep…’Buck’”.

Steve said, “How fickle the American public is.”

Yes, and apparently, “fickle-down economics” is the operative theme here.

Interestingly, D’oh-bama has not made an appearance at the much-touted replacement skyscraper at the Ground Zero locale. I wonder why? One would think that a person so “pro-America” and so “against terrorism” would be there to say a few words. What? He doesn’t have the time? It’s not a worthy backdrop for a campaign stop? I see.

Well, I guess he does have his priorities. But, I’m sure he’ll make time in his busy schedule to stop there at least once before November. Maybe when the building is officially dedicated with politically neutral word-usage and efforts to quell the fears of muslims who live in constant fear of “angry right-wingers”. You know, stuff like that.
