"It amazes me how much of what used to be handled through the churches is now handled by Uncle Sam."

Or not even though church but even through community civic organizations. People would pull together and help each other out. Government programs kill that off because there is this nameless, faceless government who sends you a check. When your neighbors get together and pass the hat and help you out or maybe just offer their labor to help rebuild a damaged house ... it builds community. Government programs destroy community. People no longer depend on each other or have gratitude. There is nobody to be grateful to except "the state". It also reinforces bad behavior. A person can be an absolute schmuck but they still get their check from the government. In the past if a person was thief or swindler, the community wouldn't be so quick to help them out. It acted as an additional force to moderate behavior. Now you can cheat everyone in town and still "get by" on government support where the community would have cut you off long ago if it was in their power to do so.

Government programs contribute to the tragedy of the commons. Free money destroys people, families, and communities.

Agreed - pdsand - a thousand times over. The asnwer starts with those of us charged with this "crop" putting the government out of the business of education. But even most conservatives will look at you like you're crazy if you say that. Parents - entirely responsible for their children's education?! Then the, "But what about...?" questions begin. Poor people, single moms, orphans... The government has to help! It amazes me how much of what used to be handled through the churches is now handled by Uncle Sam. Our faith has shifted - in big government (Obama) we trust.

My greatest fear is that he will be a repeat of Carter. And as a result, a lot of people are going to die over a very long time who wouldn't need to otherwise.

Carter, rather than engaging in Iran and demanding a change to constitutional monarchy and establishment of democratic institutions decided, instead, to run away. As a result the Russians invaded Afghanistan and the mullahs in Iran began to export their brand of Islamo-fascism to Lebanon by creating, training, and supplying Hezbollah. The Russians would have never invaded Afghanistan had we still had a strong presence in Iran. The eventual outcome of that was the birth of al Qaeda and the Taliban. People are still fighting and dying there. Israel recently fought a war with Hezbollah. These deaths can all be placed in the lap of Jimmy Carter and are what happens when America is weak and runs away.

In Central American I am already seeing the return of a situation similar to that during the Carter administration. Ortega recently stole the election in Nicaragua and the Sandinista communists are working their way back into power. Russian leaders are visiting Venezuela. Hezbollah is beginning to gain a presences in the region and apparently using cocaine trafficking as a funding mechanism.

I have a seven year old son.

It is now almost 30 years since Carter left office and our sons and daughters are still dying for his mistakes. My greatest fear is that my son will die for Obama's mistakes.

My worst fear is that I will not be able to keep my 1 yr old daughter safe from the next attack.

I have no doubt that it's coming. I just always figured I, my husband, his family, and my family could fend for themselves when the next one came. I, now, have a beautiful baby girl, and I fear for her future.

It's a scarey thing, and I've had my fair share of nightmares about it. Not, necessarily, because Obama will be President, but because of the transition and what is going on in the world today. His statements and ads during his campaign sure as hell haven't helped communication with other countries.. allies or enemies. I, probably, would have been able to predict our future with Hillary or McCain better than Obama..

I've never felt so uncertain about the future, before, except that something bad is sure to happen..

Third!

psand - Too many Americans have forgotten (or never knew) the fundamental character that makes us American. The no BS attitude along with the ultimate value of truth and high standards. We tolerate the attacks on God, family and country as if the cost may be ignored. Our forefathers would have been up in arms and sacrificing their lives at just the smell of this evil.

I worry that as the years drag on, less and less Americans will remember or be taught the ideas that America was founded on. The idea that we have individual liberty in this country. That we as Americans have no right to tell one another what to do. Liberals operate from the basic assumption that all issues are up for policy debate. That no matter what the issue may be, light bulb wattage, high-water usage toilets, fuel efficiency in cars, or the number of bullets that your gun can hold, that we can all come together at the federal level and set reasonable policy on what's allowable and what isn't. It's just so completely opposed to the great ideas of America's founding. Whatever happened to the Zell Millers of life who stood in the U.S. Senate and said that it's not the proper place of the Federal Government to be policing chickens? Under Obama the federal government will be vigorously policing chickens, and seat belts, and light bulbs, and cigarettes, and corporate payrolls, and bathrooms where transgender people want to pee, and exhaust pipes, and whatever else. And as long as it doesn't really interfere with a lot of peoples' lives, then they'll just keep letting it go on and on and on. And they'll figure, 'yes, that rule makes a lot of sense, I agree'.
People need to remember the way it used to be, that in my house you can't tell me what to do. In my store, you can't tell me what to do. On the floor of my factory, you can't tell me what to do. Well the government can't tell you what to do either. The government of the United States is the people. If you wouldn't stand for your neighbor to come on to your lawn and tell you to xeroscape your yard, or to change your light bulbs, why would you lie idly by and let the government? It doesn't matter if the proposed regulation is sensible, middle of the road, or in the interest of safety. The Government doesn't have any right to tell Americans what they have to do.
But our children aren't taught this anymore, and for the foreseeable future it looks like another fresh crop of children won't be taught this way either. And what if one day down the road nobody even thinks this way? That's my greatest fear of the Obama administration.

"Here’s a good example of how to create those mindless hoards….our school board just approved a new “rule” where teachers are not to give “zeros” or “F’s” to their students any longer. They have been mandated to give instead, a grade of 50%, even if the student does no work but at least attends class."

and they deserve 50% of your income too

Thanks for the link 1st. It was very amusing. I think we all know how ignorant Obama voters are; it is just funny to watch them display their dearth of knowledge. The worst part is that lady who said she wouldn't change her vote after the epiphany. Democrats remind me of one of my favorite quotes, from John Gardner:

"That is their happiness: they see all life without observing it. They're buried in it like crabs in mud.”

Dez - your list is a sham - as Ted Kennedy wasn't on it.

To answer Proreason's question - I do believe that these scum are elected/re-elected because it makes people feel better about themselves - as in 1) gee, I'm not such a bad guy, look at Senator So-And-So or 2) see, everybody does it, I ain't so bad. And of course the scum in DC encourage it - so that the worse and less educated, moral and concerned the 'masses' become, the more laws, control and power they themselves can pass.

I got the following in 2005 - which does make the point too:

Can you imagine working for a company that has
a little more than 500 employees and has the
following statistics:

36 have been accused of spousal abuse

7 have been arrested for fraud

19 have been accused of writing bad checks

117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least
2 businesses

3 have done time for assault

71, repeat 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad
credit

14 have been arrested on drug-related charges

8 have been arrested for shoplifting

21 currently are defendants in lawsuits. and

84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last

It's the 535 members of the United States

Dez – your list is a sham – as Ted Kennedy wasn’t on it.

To answer Proreason’s question – I do believe that these scum are elected/re-elected because it makes people feel better about themselves – as in 1) gee, I’m not such a bad guy, look at Senator So-And-So or 2) see, everybody does it, I ain’t so bad. And of course the scum in DC encourage it – so that the worse and less educated, moral and concerned the ‘masses’ become, the more laws, control and power they themselves can pass.

I got the following in 2005 – which does make the point too:

Can you imagine working for a company that has
a little more than 500 employees and has the
following statistics:

36 have been accused of spousal abuse

7 have been arrested for fraud

19 have been accused of writing bad checks

117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least
2 businesses

3 have done time for assault

71, repeat 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad
credit

14 have been arrested on drug-related charges

8 have been arrested for shoplifting

21 currently are defendants in lawsuits. and

84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last
year

Can you guess which organization this is?

Give up yet? . . . Scroll down, Folks!

Pro, I agree per se, but we are NOT headed for a depression. Period.

If there was anything "like" the depression, it would look something like this:
