It's "new math"

You can't take three from two, two is less than three so you look at the four in the tens place make three tens, regroup and you change a ten to ten once.

New math, Neeeew math. It won't do you a bit of good to learn new math. It's so simple...so plainly simple...that only Obama can do iiiiiiiit!

(with sincerest apologies to Tom Lehrer)

There are more than 70,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, mostly under Nato command. Pres Bush must have gotten some response to his request for NATO troops.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said that 900 new troops would come from Britain, 600 from Germany and 600 from Spain. Italy and France were fresh committing forces, too, he added.
The statements from Gibbs seem to be in direct contrast with what others ore saying.

The most scary part of this whole BBC article to me is:

Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country had agreed to drop its opposition to Mr Rasmussen's candidacy after receiving unspecified "guarantees" from President Obama.

I suspect those "guarantees" gave more that we got in return.

NBC News (dutifully repeated on our local news segment) is also reporting this to be a rousing success, using the 5k number also. Worse, they--and Geraldo on Fox last night--are also stating that Bush never had this much support from NATO. While I can't come up with the numbers, I'm almost certain that cannot be true. I thought NATO had originally committed a hefty amount of troops in Afghanistan, although perhaps not in Iraq. But of course, the media has spoken, and their words are now the accepted truth for most Americans. How sad.

"the White House said was a total of "up to 5,000" personnel. "

Actually, Steve, Pravda WH could have said "up to 100,000", since even 1 is "up to" 100,000.

The Moron's slavvy's rarely say something that cannot be parsed by an accomplished lawyer back to something with a faint resemblence to a factual statement.

And besides, only simple-minded people without an ability to detect nuance expect plain facts.

And yet, I can easily get into an argument with a faithful reader of the press. "But it says right here", they'll say.

These are the people who go to a car dealership and think they are expert hagglers. They also buy into all the sales pitches, false representation and wear NASCAR attire. Not that that's inherently bad, pre se..but you have to be a sucker to pay 300 bucks for a jacket with your favorite car's number on it while the '88 Buick you have is falling apart and the kids need new clothes.

I'm afraid that I have to side with liberal democrats in at least one area and that is where up to half of the population of this nation are drooling mouth-breathers.

Unfortunately, many of them do not realize that they are. That they have been subconsciously swayed by a slick Budweiser ad with frogs in it. Or, that "They're lovin' it" down at McDonald's.

So it's no great surprise to me why we have the government that we do. As has been said, with the press pandering to, indeed specifically targeting the ignorant and blatantly stupid, they have learned, perhaps by studying marketing techniques, that if you say something often and loud enough, the "general public" starts to believe it and then, pretty much just accepts it as fact.

"Guns are bad"
"Terrorists are people too"
"Drug addiction is a disease"
"murderers are "victims"
"The government would never intentionally do something wrong (unless they're republicans)"
"Hope and change are good"
"War is Peace"
"Freedom is slavery"
"Ignorance is strength"

So the purveyors of permanently perpetual propaganda please the people and piss off the protectors of peace.
