Pre-teen travels to Rome to Meet with Pope and ask him to tell Obama not to deport her criminal father

NewYorkDailyNews: Pope Francis asks President Obama to help Calif. girl, 10, save her father from deportation

The pre-teen pushed her way through the general audience at the Vatican on Wednesday to enlist the Holy Father’s help. One day later, he spoke to President Obama on her behalf.

    By Leslie Larson – Mar 27, 2014

Jersey Vargas joined the crowd at St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday, asking Pope Francis to ask President Obama for help on behalf of her father.

A California pre-teen took her plea for immigration reform straight to the Pope, urging the Holy Father to address the issue during his private audience with President Obama.

Pope Francis did spot the eager fourth-grader and leaned in across a barrier to hear her story, promising to raise the matter during his meeting with Obama the next day.

Confident she had “completed her mission,” Vargas said she felt “much more assured” after speaking with the Holy Father, who was true to his word and discussed the situation with the President.

Obama told reporters after his visit to the Vatican on Thursday that Pope Francis is “very mindful of the plight of so many immigrants.”

“I described to him how I felt there was still an opportunity for us to make this right and get a law passed,” the President said.

Mario Vargas is an undocumented immigrant who has lived in the U.S. since he was 16 but never gained legal status. He was caught driving without a valid license in January, KTLA reported.

CBSLocal: SoCal Immigration Coalition Prepares For Trip To Vatican, Meeting With Pope Francis
    March 20, 2014

ANORAMA CITY (CBSLA.com) — A Southern California immigration coalition is preparing for a trip to Vatican City, where its members will meet with Pope Francis to push for reform.

Ten-year-old Jersey Vargas, of Panorama City, is one of two children – and one of 17 total members from the L.A.-area – making the trip as part of the Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition.

The 4th grader’s father is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. Jersey told CBS2′s Serene Branson her father was pulled over and taken in for not having identification. And she hopes meeting with the pope will help her father’s plight to remain in the U.S. with his family.

“I am excited ’cause never thought [I would] meet someone amazing like Pope Francis,” she said. “My dad, he’s now with immigration – I think in Indiana – and I’m very scared that they’re going to deport him.”

She thinks it was for not having identification and he is in Indiana

The trip comes just before the pope’s meeting with President Obama.

The coalition’s members are hoping Pope Francis takes a specific stance on U.S. policyto grant amnesty to immigrants and urges Mr. Obama to break up the log jam in Congress.

“When I’m going to meet Pope Francis, since he loves children I hope he can hear us out loud and can change Obama’s mind so he can help us too,” Jersey said.

Immigration activist Juan Jose Gutierrez, the trip coordinator, and said the sit-down with Pope Francis became reality thanks to L.A. Archbishop Jose Gomez.

But even he was stunned when they got the meeting.

“When it was first proposed in November, it seemed like you gotta be kidding me,” he confessed.

Immigration opponents don’t support the meeting.

A spokesperson for the Federation for American Immigration Reform told CBS2 the organization understands the pope’s compassion but doesn’t agree with the coalition’s approach.

“What the pope and other religious leaders often overlook is the impact of mass immigration – … The church can only be charitable with its own resources,” FAIR U.S. spokesperson Ira Mehlman said.

AP: Girl talks to pope on immigration, then dad freed

AP: LOS ANGELES — After a 10-year-old California girl traveled to the Vatican to plead with Pope Francis for help as her father faced deportation, the man was released Friday on bond from immigration detention.

Mario Vargas was freed from a detention

{{{{ facility in Louisiana after he posted $5,000 bond.}}}} A relative who saw the girl on television pleading with the pope during a public audience helped with the funding, said his wife, Lola Vargas.

“When she left, her wish was that her father would be home,” she told The Associated Press in Spanish. “Thank God she is going to get her wish.”

Mario Vargas’ release came after his daughter Jersey, of Panorama City, Calif., addressed the pope this week as part of a California delegation that traveled to urge the Vatican to prod President Barack Obama on immigration reform. The girl and a teenager went as part of the 16-member group to represent the American children of immigrant parents who are afraid their families will be divided by deportation.

“I feel very happy and proud because I’m finally going to have my dad back and we’re going to be reunited,” Jersey told the AP late Friday before boarding a flight from Rome to Los Angeles.

She said her father was also heading to Los Angeles, and that she hoped he would get there before her arrival Saturday.

“I haven’t seen him in two years,” she said. “It’s been very hard since my dad hasn’t been home. My mom has had to be the provider for my family, she’s been the mother and father for two years.”

Mario Vargas was arrested last year in Tennessee and convicted of driving under the influence before he was taken into federal custody earlier this month, said Bryan Cox, a spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Authorities released him after he posted bond, and an immigration judge will determine the outcome of his deportation case, Cox said.

Lola Vargas said she had been gathering money to pay for her Mexican husband’s bond but didn’t have enough until one of his cousins called, surprised to see the girl on television, and offered to help. Her husband had gone to Tennessee to look for work in construction and had been sending money to his family in California, she said.

A message left for Vargas’ immigration attorney, Alex Galvez, seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Juan Jose Gutierrez, an immigrant advocate who coordinated the trip to Italy, said the archdiocese of Los Angeles helped get the group a key spot so they could speak with Pope Francis amid the crowds.

Rueters: U.S. Releases Immigrant, Says Unrelated to Daughter’s Plea to Pope

    By Kevin Murphy – Mar 29, 2014

(Reuters) – A Mexican immigrant to the United States whose daughter asked Pope Francis for help in stopping her father’s deportation has been released from custody, but U.S. immigration officials said there was no papal intervention.

Mario Vargas-Lopez was free on bond from a detention center in Louisiana three days after his 10-year-old daughter, Jersey Vargas, delivered her message to the pope. He was reunited with his family in Los Angeles on Friday.

Vargas-Lopez was arrested in Tennessee in September on a drunk driving charge and served a six month sentence.

Upon his release he was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and held in a Louisiana detention facility until he could appear before a judge for removal proceedings, said Bryan Cox, agency spokesman in New Orleans.

But relatives and friends of the Vargas-Lopez family raised $5,000 to post bond, his lawyer, Alex Galvez, said on Saturday.

A judge had approved the bond request several days before the girl met with the pope, but the money was not available until late this week, Galvez said.

The bond amount was not changed as the result of his daughter asking the pope to intercede, Cox said.

Vargas-Lopez is required to stay in communication with ICE and tell agency officials where he is pending his next court appearance, Cox said.

“Him being released on bond in no way translates into special action on his behalf,” Cox said. “This was standard procedure.”

The an illegal comes to the US at age 16 and never got an ID. Old enough to have a 10 year old girl, who speaks to the AP in Spanish?

The Father was not really gone two years, but just last year when he got pulled over for a DUI and spent 6 months in jail for the DUI, but the mother says he was working and sending money back to LA.

And a judge accepted his bond even though he had not gotten the money yet? And so the detention place just told the father to let him know where his hearings would be held?

Amazing this poor child was picked to take an expensive trip to Rome Italy and arrived back in LA around the same time her daddy did.

FAIR is upset that not all immigrants from around the world was represented. Rome is full of Christians, but have deported illegal Muslims.

And since Mexico is nearly all Christians, namely Roman Catholilcs you can see why the POPE wants the US to stop deporting Mexicos, because it’s money for the Catholic Church in the US.

I just wonder how they selected the group to pay to go to Rome, and think how many poor mouths it could feed to have saved those expensive plane tickets.

And the father has an hypened name. I see so much of this from the inner city children. They are always changing who their relatives are. One day the dad is the dad, then he’s really the Uncle or Cousin.

Wife and I went to see “Lost in the 50’s” at the 19th. Century Opera house here, and had
an enjoyable 3 and a half hours of songs of that era. It was a benefit for Wounded Warriors.
We managed to not think of all the world’s problems during that time whilst watching and
listening to the songs, presented in a karioke format by a group of 4 men and 3 women. The
place was packed. Best $10 a ticket we spent all year!

A big WIN for Australia and the whales! The UN Court has ruled that Japan’s so-called
scientific research in the Southern Ocean is not scientific and is not covered by various
legal statutes. It must cease forthwith! It took 7 years of litigation. Since we can now get
ersatz crab meat at Wal Mart, I don’t think it will take long for Japan to come up with
manufactured whale meat for the declining number of folks there who still eat it. Way to
