Wedding bells toll in Conn. for gay couples

They said their vows holding hands, standing before a memorial to the 1839 Amistad slave revolt. Carved in its base were the words: “Make Us Free.”

Yesterday Peg Oliveira and Jennifer Vickery became the first couple to exercise their new freedom to wed under a court decision that makes Connecticut only the second state in the country to currently allow same-sex marriage.

State Appellate Court Judge Herbert Gruendel, a longtime friend, conducted the ceremony outside New Haven City Hall as the couple’s 3-month old daughter, Willow, watched from a stroller.

“I want to say thank you to Connecticut for letting us do this,” Vickery said, her voice trembling.

Their wedding occurred just 90 minutes after a lower-court judge entered a formal decision to comply with the Oct. 10 state Supreme Court ruling that gay marriage was legal in Connecticut.

The pronouncement came four years after eight plaintiff couples filed a suit arguing that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.

At the time, it appeared that Connecticut would become the third state in the nation to allow gay marriages. But after California’s approval of a gay marriage ban last week, that number decreased to two, with Connecticut joining only Massachusetts in granting gay couples equal marriage rights.

This change in the political landscape made yesterday bittersweet for some couples in Connecticut, even as they rejoiced in their new rights.

“We’re very sad,” said Stephen Davis, who, with his partner Jeffrey Busch, was one of the plaintiff couples who got their marriage license in New Haven yesterday. “It does somewhat diminish our joy.”

But for most gay couples in Connecticut yesterday, the joy far outweighed their concerns about legal battles to come. Across the state, gay couples visited town or city clerks to apply for marriage licenses yesterday, although most appeared to be waiting to actually tie the knot.

“In my lifetime, I’ve seen it go from ‘the love that dare not speak its name’ to today, when we have a love that can be declared on the steps of New Haven City Hall,” said Garret Stack, 59. …

Once again via a decision by the courts, not the people.

Hundreds of protesters converged on El Coyote on Beverly Boulevard on Wednesday night, and the picketing got so heated that LAPD officers in riot gear had to be called.

All because Marjorie Christoffersen, a manager there and a daughter of El Coyote’s owner, had contributed $100 to the Yes on 8 campaign.

Christoffersen, who is Mormon, met with protesters Wednesday and at one point broke down in tears, said Arnoldo Archila, another El Coyote manager. But the activists were not satisfied with her explanation and continued to post protests about her on the Web.

“She had a chance to make nice and blew it. I was almost feeling a tiny bit of sympathy for her. Not no more!!” wrote one blog poster, who also listed competing Mexican restaurants where diners should go instead of El Coyote.

By Thursday, Christoffersen had left town, said Archila, who said El Coyote employees — some of whom are gay — were left staggered by the protests, including more than 50 calls a day criticizing the restaurant.

We are all a family,” Archila said. “If this is going to affect the business, its going to affect them. There are people who have to feed children and pay mortgages.”

Despite the criticism, activists say they plan to continue applying pressure. “It doesn’t matter if it’s the CEO or if it’s the hostess that greets you at El Coyote. It really makes no difference,” said Gerry Moylan, 47, a Los Angeles Realtor who planned a night of picketing in front of the restaurant Thursday.

“If I’m going to eat dinner at El Coyote and part of my money is going to pay the hostess’ pay and she turns around and uses her pay to promote a proposition that takes away my rights, then I’m going to stop paying my money to her.”

Too funny, DEZ. But I overheard someone at the last gay wedding say that the two were made for each other. The names of the two were, Michael Fitzpatrick and Patrick Fitzmichael.

What happened to live and let live, California voted, accept it and move on, why damage people’s reputation and business simply because they have religious believes?

Most ironic of all, the website they have made has a picture of a tombstone with a concentration camp memorial, they also equate prop 8 with hate, I suppose they fail to see how hateful they are being themselves..

3) “Right wing hate monger” becomes unemployed…..

I think we’re already at that point; too many people are afraid to speak their mind and be labeled racist/hate monger by the hysterical left, as they could end either unemployed or with a career at a dead end.
