Selected News For Week Oct 15 - 21

Thanks to our generous readers, Sweetness & Light gets emailed usually more than 20 news items a day. Of course it would be impractical to post all of them as separate threads.

For some time I have been cogitating an easy way to allow members to post news items that have been omitted. And by "easy" I mean a method that would not require using too much HTML coding, which the regular articles require.

Probably the simplest way would be to have a weekly thread wherein the members are encouraged to post news items in the comments section. So that is what this thread will be.

Please eschew articles from blogs or hugely popular sites like Drudge, since most people will presumably see such material elsewhere.

Of course articles that fit under the topic of a fairly recent thread should be posted as comments there.

In order to make the articles as readable as possible, please try to post using the following format as much as possible:

******

What media outlet the article is from:

< blockquote > < b > The headline indented and in bold < /b >

An extended excerpt from the original article, using ellipses (…) to indicate cuts…

The link   < /blockquote >

Your own comments about the article.

******

In your posts you should not put in spaces after the < or before the > tags.

To post the link just cut and paste the page address of the article, which will look something like:

  http://www.nypost.com/seven

The software will make it an active link automatically. Or, even better, use TinyURL – which will keep the links short.

So that you end up with something like…

From the New York Post:

HILL’S SO SORRY OVER ‘VIET’ SLAP

By MAGGIE HABERMAN

October 15, 2006 — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called John McCain yesterday to personally apologize and denounce comments an adviser of hers reportedly made slamming the GOP senator over his time in captivity in Vietnam.

The move from one potential 2008 presidential candidate to another was sparked by a column in The New York Times, in which Maureen Dowd quoted an anonymous adviser talking about McCain’s criticism of the Clintons over their North Korea position.

The adviser said Team Clinton thought McCain was doing the White House’s dirty work by criticizing the Clintons and ended up "looking similar to the way he did on those captive tapes from Hanoi, where he recited the names of his crewmates."

That was a reference to an unsubstantiated rumor used to tar McCain, a Vietnam war hero, as off-kilter during the 2000 GOP presidential primary…

McCain spokesman John Weaver replied, "Senator Clinton is correct, the remark was reprehensible." …

Yes, she is so sorry she will probably give that aide a raise.

But don’t worry too much about screwing up the format. I can always edit it.

"Now you are the chef," as they used to say about self-serve restaurants.
